Hi Greg thanks for the great videos! The dropping leaves you mentioned about thirsty trees. I noticed some old leaves were drooping and i moved aside some of the dirt to check and the dirt is still moist. Is it possible it could also be from overwatering?
Not OP, but I suspect the same, after a huge rainy winter in sacramento, my potted hass & fuerte avocado trees leaves look droopy and wilted. I tried to protect them from the giant endless rainstorms best I could but the pots were still soaked for weeks on end. It may have given way to root rot. I did my best to have a sandy soil mix with rocks but likely should have had more drainage. I was at first more worried about the summers and water retention that I didn't consider a crazy endless monsoon. It's spring now and it's dried out, i'm trying to keep them as dry as possible for a while to see if they bounce back. Just wilty looking leaves but nothing falling yet.
More great information. My Hass does have persea mites, so sprayed with Neem oil, seemed to help, will spray one more time. Is this the correct treatment? Has your Holiday set any fruit? My #15 that I planted last fall, about 6 1/2 ' tall, after the water/honey spray has a good set, but know a lot will drop this summer.
Thanks, Frank. I've never treated for persea mites myself, but of people I know who have, they have used predator mites with success. Let me know how the Neem spray goes. No on the Holiday. It has set fruit, but has yet to carry any to full maturity. From what I've seen in my Holidays and elsewhere, the trees need to get fairly large before they hold fruit to maturity (and the fruit is giant when mature!). Hope yours does this year!

I live in the tropics and have a number of avocados trees growing ..Ruehle, Peterson, Booth 8, Hass and a number of others grown from seed from the Philippines The trouble I’m having is that the top new growth completely dies back, then a few weeks later new shoots appear, this has happened twice. I have clay soil on a slope but have the trees planted in mound above that. The trees were planted in 2017 and were doing great until 2 years ago. Any advice welcome
Hello mate Allow me a question, in my area I have seen some avocados planted from seed, and to try to identify some of their genetics I usually pinch the leaves to swim if they smell like anise, and on some occasion I noticed that they smelled more like sassafras, this is what you want Say about its genetics, and would it bring some interesting feature to the tree? Thanks, Jorge. I have only noticed a little connection between the characteristics of the avocados on trees whose leaves smell like anise. There isn't a consistent relationship, such as black skin or size or a certain flavor. That's a great question though because if there were, then you could test a seedling's leaves to get an idea of what its fruit would be like. Some say that only the leaves of "Mexican" varieties smell like anise, but this is not true. Popenoe found trees in the highlands of Guatemala that smelled like anise over a hundred years ago.

Oh yeah, Stewart has those leaves too. I forgot to say that. I only have Zutano on a multi-graft tree so it wouldn't make for a very helpful video. But I can use a friend's Zutano for a video profile of that variety. I'll see when I can get that done. And I'll put it on the calendar to make a profile of the Zutano fruit next winter when its season rolls around again. Thanks for these suggestions.
Hi James, I've only tasted a few Holidays and it was a long time ago. I remember them being good but I don't remember much else. I'd grow a Hass tree over a Holiday tree, for sure. As for the fruit, I'd choose Hass there too just because Holiday is big. I like to eat big avocados sometimes, but as an everyday fruit I like smaller avocados like Hass. That's just my personal preference.

Great vid. I have a reed avocado tree and it's been super pollinated. But a lot of the pea size avocados are starting to fall every day there will be like 20 on the floor. However there is still a lot on the tree and the big size marble size avocados are not falling off. Is this normal?
Yes, and it's healthy. Imagine your tree trying to hold all thousand of those tiny avocados once they reach the size of grapefruits. Branches would break! Reed is an overachiever when it comes to fruitset. Thankfully, it usually sheds a lot. Still, last year mine set so much that branches nearly broke.
Greg i have a bacon seed avo tree ungrafted that is 2 years old throwing flowers right now, so does it have a chance of setting fruit so young ?, i thought ungrafted trees take 5 to 13 years for any chance of fruit set ?

Thanks Greg for the useful and much appreciated information. Today I installed a 24 inch box Reed tree at my mom’s house in San Jose. Added to the clay dirt gypsum, biochar, and lots of course sand. Hope it does well. I will also have it on a monthly foliar spray program of seaweed extract, molasses, and protien hydrolasate. Do you have any experience or knowledge using any of the above. Not sure if it will help but I am going to it to see. Take care!
The tree was planted on a mound with a biochar and sand mixed into the clay soil. This mixture was three feet wide and deep. The gypsum was top dressed before the addition of a wood chip layer that was 4x4 feet by 6 inches deep. I added about half of a 32 gallon container of charged biochar mixture That I haves used on smaller container plants. I’ve been fine tuning my concoction for the biochar and I think I have a pretty good thing going. I’ve used it on smaller containerized avocado trees with great success. It’s all homemade and includes fish emulsion, azomite dust, humic acid, goat manure, worm castings and more items. It takes a while to produce but it sure get my plants off to a really good start, including my grafted avocado trees. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I am now trailing protien hydrolosate as a foliar spray. I also want to get a hold of clonal rootstock material such as Duke 7 or Toro Canyon to try my hand at double grafting. I think Dusa patent will be expiring soon so I’d consider that one as well. Keep me in mind if you have any information or suggestions. I’m willing to trade materials and/or information with you.

I don't know how Reeds behave elsewhere, but if you're in Southern California and your Reed has no blossoms yet here in June then you'll have to wait until next spring. Some Reeds are still blooming but every one I have seen lately is either peaking in bloom now or is finishing its bloom. It's also unusual if you have a Reed that is 13 years old on only just produced its first crop. I've never heard of a Reed that is so slow to come into bearing. All that I know start bearing within a couple years of grafting.
Not really. Occasionally, new growth will start and then die back on a single twig though. This usually coincides with spring heat although I don't think that causes it. Small branches on avocados just often die off due to shading or some internal damage or something else I'm not aware of.
Greg Alder, I have a Hass tree, ever since soil from hilly area got dumped and spread to the area the tree is in (the soil seems clayish pale and looks compacted) it has not produced fruit or very few. It's a large tree been here many years. The leaves don't look great either. It makes me sad to see the tree suffering. I don't know how to help it. Please advise :((((
This is a dangerous situation because trees don't like to have a bunch of soil added on top of where their roots are growing. Other than removing that added soil, I don't know how else to help the situation.

You're on target there. I should have shown that in the video. I have a tree with small new leaves right now. It doesn't necessarily mean that the root rot fungus is the cause -- although that's possible -- but it does mean that the tree's roots are in bad shape. With my tree in particular, it is a young tree that was not getting enough water all year last year because it was planted near a large sumac bush whose roots had infiltrated its root zone and was sucking the area dry.

Your leaves are so shiny and waxy, my indoor tree has none of that, even the really old leaves, so it's not about maturity. Maybe has something to do with sun and nutrients?

You only need to worry if all the leaves are drooping in that specific way that avocado leaves droop when they're thirsty.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about. Leaves cupping like that never indicate a problem that I've seen.
