Paul Newman was once asked. about his marriage. " Why would I want. hamburger when I have steak." Thank you, again for sharing amazing interviews.
Paul Newman made this world a better place to live in, simply leading by example. Every time I see him I have to smile immediately, can't help it, God Bless him. Beautiful tribute at the end, preceeded by funny stories about the man, not tearful ones, David skillfully concealed the obvious sadness he felt.
Luis Humberto Vega your so right

well put
Today, IT'S the story - run with it.
@@davedillon1372 Got a problem, Dave ?
Man, the world lost a gigantic touch of class, grace and talent when Mr. Newman passed away. And David Letterman is the best at what he did - ever. He made it look so easy. Nobody was or is even close to him.
I totally agree, and Letterman has always been my favorite late night host.👍
I love the way Paul had to make musical rearrangements on the fly to accommodate Larry Bud's singing off cue.
Paul did phenomenally
It sounded almost musical. 🥰
Paul Newman, one of the greats. And a very charitable & kind man.
From cleveland ohio too. People in the Midwest are naturally polite and kind
Paul Newman was such a class act.An individual who NEVER took himself to seriously.alwayd having fun with Dave, Paul Shaffer and the rest of the Original late night guys.I haven't watched much late night T.V since LETTERMAN retired and may PAUL NEWMAN rest in peace.
Such a handsome kind man. What a cool cat. Mr. Newman I love your films. And your dressings are swell. May you Rest In Peace.
What a great straight man. You can see the laughter behind the eyes but he keeps his face straight.
Ironic as he was a massive bisexual.
is it me, or was everything back then was way better than today. I feel like actual ADULTS ruled the world before.
Yes. I feel like the style of comedy was a better quality too. Subtler jokes.
Welcome to Idiocracy. Hopefully something changes soon.
well being a real man and being responsible and composed and having testosterone in your system wasn't bad...... Paul Newman was a truly great man.
@@lunarphoenixforyourface yeah the big reset
Yup. Tell those dum kids to shut up!
You can see the closeness among these two great friends. This is an inspiring compilation ♥️
lotta soft balls being tossed
Paul Newman is the king of cool. So relaxed and easygoing and not a man of too many words.
I remember Mr. Newman doing finger guns at the first Late Show episode with “Where the hell are the singing cats?!?” But I didn’t realize he did them at almost every appearance. This is just phenomenal!!!
82 years old ~ still gorgeous skim & so handsome ~ what a great marriage can do.~ 50 years of being crazy for each other 💞. Paul ❤️ Joanne 🎉
A truly terrific compilation! Enjoyed every minute!!
Thank you for sharing this! Made me cry. The world is better having had Paul Newman walk upon it. A true role model.
You will not find a guy with more class than Paul Newman.
This is gold. I'd never seen Celebrities and their Dry Cleaning. I laughed out loud.
Jake Mabe me too. I did a spit take. Genius
Paul Newman was the best!
i love it when he goes into the audience and chats with them...
This compilation makes me deliriously happy. Thank you.
Remember when you would read who would be appearing as guests in the TV Guide. Paul Newman on Letterman would be a must watch!
An outstanding tribute. Thanks!!!
Paul Shaffer and the late show band were so much better than anything on now and I miss Larry "Bud" Melman.
Agree. And, yes, I think we all miss, Larry 'Bud'. 👍
Cc
This was a great late night talk show
Great collection. The interviews were a bit repetitive, but I didn't care, he was an icon, and just looking into his eyes, he defined stardom.
Seems like a sweet, humble guy. This was a pleasure, Don. Thank you.
The dry cleaner made me so sad because that's a generation of NYC that will never come back. 😢
i buy Newmans Own balsamic vinaigrette dressing all the time. its delicious!!!
“Chuck Scarborough monitoring the events of the evening..” 🤣
Paul Newman Hysterical. I could not believe watching this
Paul Newman is the best...such a cool guy
Dave always liked to have in Waylon Jennings & Johnny Cash. He really liked them both. I liked Dave for that fact & memvers of Pauls bank plsyed so well with them. Dave made us laugh all the years he was on. Luved Paul Newman, he was do handsome & those eyes. Great music & actor. Thanks for videoing this for us. Great.
I was fortunate to meet him at the Mr. Steak restaurant in Brainerd MN back in 1977. He was racing at the Brainerd International Raceway.
i love the old set with the car lights going over the bridge. they stopped that pretty early on, didn't they? probably thought it was too visibly distracting or some nonsense. i think it's magical.
To the most wonderful, generous, classy celebrity ever. Great memories of picking up camera equipment next door for my company Skylight Film Productions. RIP Paul.
Allright, Paul was always fun to see on Letterman. The "Just needed a little applause" bit from the primetime show was especially great.
Cool hand Paul
Once again, Don Giller, you continue to be the Tiffany network of UA-cam channels. This collection is epic.
OH YES, DEAR GOD, THANK YOU. lol. After I saw that tribute on the Obits vid, I knew I wanted to see more. Thank you again.
1:28:30 the "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head..." reenactment - people may have appreciated it at that time, but not as much as I do now. R.I.P. Paul Newman.
Paul Newman! The coolest and the best
Yes, still very handsome.
I just now saw d. Letterman's 😍 beautiful tribute to Mr. Paul Newman ❤. Who ever wrote this & the great accomplices of his clips put together with not just the both of them ,but also clips from the shows!!!!!!! What a guy he truly was. I became teary 😢 eyed!!! I think I will tonight watch part one 1 of " empire falls ". I recommend it. Stars both Paul & Joanne. She I believe is in her 90's.
Those were the days - Paul Newman, Robert Redford as the legendary, incomparable duo in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and later in The Sting, then Carson and Dave and their shows... If we could just turn back time...
my high school sweetheart was living in Durango, Colorado when Paul Newman was filming Butch Cassidy. She said he would buy a six pack of Coors--with the plastic holder-- drink one then lace the empty holder space through his belt so that the other five beers were hanging from his belt and he would knock them back one at a time. I don't know if he drank a case but he definitely loved beer.
When he was filming sometimes A Great Notion in Oregon on the Siletz River, where I live, and we heard stories of how he used to race my plumber up and down Highway 101 in their Corvettes and the police never bothered them at all. They did it so late at night. Local neighbors would have them over to dinner and they would go to the local pubs and drink beer and it was just a lot of fun to have Paul Newman around.
Paul Newman, the gent we all want to be
Miss this show especially TOP TEN!
i really like how Paul actually UNDERCUT Dave's estimation on how much money Newman's Own generated - Dave said 150 million, Paul said about 125. that's classy; i think most people (myself included) might have gone "yeah, that's about right." classy. classy!
48:54 Epic! This was from Dave's first show on CBS. Hilarious! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Don
"Road to Perdition" one of the GREAT movies. I believe the play they reference at the beginning is OURT TOWN by Thorneton Wilder,
2 of my favorites. Watch “Nobody’s Fool” if you haven’t.
why did i fall asleep listening to earfquake and wake up to this
It was great seeing Dave making an appearance in the new Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward documentary "The Last Movie Stars" on HBO Max. So after finishing, I had to immediately come here to see if a Paul Newman comp was made. As ever Don, you do not disappoint!
A true Gift to this World! I discovered your compilation just after finding out through conducting family ancestry research, that in fact, my grandmother was 2nd Cousin 1X Removed, to his wife Joanne Woodward and we share a Mayflower Pilgrim connection. A true Golden Hollywood Couple, those two. Thank you so much for sharing!
Than you. Letterman with his biting wit and brand of humor took. talk shows to next level entertainment. Great episodes and why I thought. Johnny Carson would pass the torch to Letterman.
Paul Newman……makes everything he wears look like a million bucks
I should not have watched this video to the very end. That montage with that song is heartbreakingly sad.
Hey you did a really nice job putting this together. I can't imagine how you did it.
Thanks!
@@dongiller you're welcome. I think it's nice of you to reply also.
Great actor...GREATER GUY!
this was like a slow burn buddy film. paul seemed pretty sceptical of dave in the beginning, he probably wasn't sure what he was about but in the end, you can see they had mutual respect for each other and were friends 2:25:40
In the later interviews, Paul must've just always chosen his favorite sweater for these Letterman appearances.
I knew the Newmans as I grew up in Westport, and when I was on Dave's NBC show, I mentioned that in our interview, and then Paul was on the show following not long after
More like six years later, when he was in the audience at the first Late Show, August 30, 1993.
His first actual sit-down guest appearance was 13 years later, April 12, 2000.
You weren’t “interviewed.”
frightened me for a moment, whenever i see a new celeb video i assume they just died...but I was relieved when i found out Paul died back in 08
Please tell me you are joking?
Haha priceless :D
Lovely voice
Balloons & Paul reminded me of the movie, "Up".
Paul newman was such a bad ass. King of cool for sure
I remember working night shift till 11:00 and then rushing home to watch letterman all the time.
i started at 11:00 so i missed out on quite a few shows after 1992 :(
MAN is that man handsome.
Paul Newman not a bad looking chap either. 😐
Cee RUS that made me laugh so hard idk y

" where are the singing cats " so funny
Classic Paul Newman...
He walked on for applause a few times that night ! I was looking 4ward 2 that !
That 1st t.v. show Paul is talking about @1:07:16, is ' Tales of Tomorrow ' esp. Ice from Space - 1952. It's here on UA-cam
I reminisced with Joanne after Paul's passing over our favorite movie he did & we all agreed Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid was the one. He was a great person.
"You saved that one for me."😂
@2:13, Paul Newman's Ballon Ride, his insurance people must have been thrilled at this!
“Where the hell are the singing cats” 🐱 🐈⬛ 🐈 🐈⬛
Dave is a master storyteller....lol
1:29 Dave always met guests who he greatly admired at center stage.
I wonder if it was planned to play Lady Of Spain after the Paul Newman story. In Slap Shot there was a scene where Newman screamed at the organist to “Never play Lady Of Spain again!!!”
And Paul Newman is alright too😊
Dave truly liked this man. You can tell
You're the GOAT man
That’s Paul Newman, not me.
Nice username
The nov 21st, 1994 show had at least three more scenes, including one with Zsa Zsa Gabor.
"Where are the dam* singing cats" ...
Wait! WHAT? I want to see 'singing cats'!!!!!!!
He was a true star
Remember this! When Paul stood up in the audience & gave the gun point. Dave loved it ❤️
HANDSOME MAN
only paul newman can make finger guns look cool
PAUL NEWMAN IS COOL HAND LUKE MISS HIM ❤
I think "Borat" got some ideas from Dave for effective, entertaining trolling.
I wouldn't doubt that.
Tom Green said he was influenced by David. Who's more alike than Sasha and Tom Green!
Lol they make Fig Newman’s now
Handsome Man
great actor ,,, but so different off screan with his dry humor great guy...love you Paul,,,,a real icon.
I woke up and got here.
Merry Christmas, Don Giller. Thanks for the channel. I swallowed a AA battery. Thoughts?
Don’t go near your remote control.
Paul Shaffer’s comment about Supernatural Thing is a song by Ben E King. A very good song
He asked him exactly the same questions lol.
i love how at times Dave's own show seems to abandon him: the camera cutting from his terrible Paul Newman stories to the bread.
Thanks for posting. I thought Letterman failed to ask Newman about is being ill. Paul Newman was diagnosed18 months before his death. My apologies to Letterman.
The timeline: Paul’s last appearance on LS was in January 2007. It was in June 2008 when the press first reported on his cancer. Paul said then he had been diagnosed 18 months before. That takes us back to December 2006, a month before Paul’s last LS appearance.
How would Dave ask him about his illness in January 2007, when Paul had kept it secret until June 2008? Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that Dave did know. Why would he betray Paul’s confidence?
That’s why he didn’t bring it up. Either he didn’t know, or he did know and respected Paul’s request to not blurt it out to the world.
@@dongiller I can easily imagine someone like Barbara Walters saying 'So Paul, you have terminal cancer ! How do you feel about that ?' when he wanted it kept private
Dave must’ve thought he was still doing his daytime gig when he said good morning
No, he was referencing the time of night the show was being aired.
Jim Mothersbaugh!!! Am i wrong or was that the former drummer (short-lived) of the legendary band DEVO!!!!?????
6:45 - He'd certainly have problems with that later.
