@@bonek350 I'm 110% sure it's Dave making this happen- his show was chock full of weird edgy comedy. This Lyle guy is just an extension of the "Guy under the seats" and other glorified nonsense.
@@dcalvitti Oh for sure! I think what we’re impressed by and what makes it work is Jimmi’s fearless confidence despite being a relative unknown at the time playing foil to an all-time TV legend.
Jimmi is such a an underrated actor, he has mastered comedy and drama, all his roles are extremely fleshed out and the energy he puts into his performances is a rare sight.
What's so great about his execution of this character, is he didn't OVERDO it. It would have been very easy to get too over the top with it. And he didn't. It was the perfect balance of charisma and subtlety. Brilliant.
Such a great character and a great performer. He was so smooth and original with his delivery I always wondered if it was scripted or improv’ed. The fact that Dave seems to be surprised and amused by all Lyle says makes me think it’s not overly scripted. But damn that’s some funny stuff. Lyle never breaks or stumbles. That actor totally owns this character.
I might have seen only a few of these live so this is amazing having this comprehensive 'Lyle the Intern' compilation. Really demonstrates Jimmi's acting/improv versatility and role consistency, and explains why his later roles are so effective. Dave is such a great straight man anyway but here these two really hit their stride. Comedy gold, thanks!
Yeesss! The complete Lyle Saga in HD format! Thank you Letterman crew for putting this together! I have very fond memories of my Dad and I enjoying these together. We didn't always get along, which I regret. But watching Lyle and Letterman takes me to a better place with my Dad and I. So thank you guys for your work. And thank you Jimmi Simpson for being a comedic genius.
I think because it sounds like it might refer to some body part, but not in any clear way. Mostly, though, because nobody would ever say it. It's really weird nonsense. Hard to say exactly why it was funny. A lot of the letterman humor was like that.
Two of Lyle’s quips that were underappreciated: “Just scored with the costume lady; Lyle needs to take a little breather.” (Late Show fans know the great Sue Hum)…And “Ya got the body of a Greek god - like Fran Tarkenton in his heyday…” That’s gold.
The interesting thing about the 2/17/09 segment is that in at least two markets (Chattanooga, TN and Watertown, NY), the CBS affiliates decided to go ahead with their digital transitions despite the date being pushed to June. So the last thing broadcast on those stations was Lyle telling Dave 'I know where you live Bee-Yotch!' before the plugs were pulled.
I was 15 when Lyle first burst onto Letterman's stage, and his and Dave's dynamic was a massive influence on my sense of humor. Thanks for uploading this collection!
The amazing thing about this character, is that we ALL know (or knew) a Lyle the Intern. Maybe it's not a specific person we can call out, but an amalgamation of characteristics we know, and had to suffer through at a job or in college. It's pure genius.
This was one of the greatest recurring bits Dave ever had. During this time period I would tune in every night hoping for a Lyle appearance. After his last one, it took me years to accept that he wasn’t ever coming back
The sheer smugness/confidence @ 36:20 after the video of him sleeping on the desk was perfection. We should all have that swagger in everything we do LOL. Great character, great acting.
My favorite McPoyle and fave character from the brilliant show It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. Didn’t know he was on Letterman too. Awesome internship!
Dude. Middle of this I made a connection: he has a lot in common with Jean-Raphael on Parks and Recreation. The same "living in their own world" attitude, and the hustle to be in "Hollywood" and make money with crazy schemes.
One of the greatest recurring segments in the history of television. Jimmi Simpson is a legend. RUDY!!!!!!
I adore Lyle.
Simpson played him pitch perfect
Every move and facial expression is gold. Could never repeat the powerful creepiness of Lyle. I'm in awe of his performance.
I have never seen such a spectacular display of confidence from a television performer, maybe, ever.
I don't know how he pulled this off and so well.
@@bonek350 I'm 110% sure it's Dave making this happen- his show was chock full of weird edgy comedy. This Lyle guy is just an extension of the "Guy under the seats" and other glorified nonsense.
Yeah Rudy is really good! Lyle isn't too bad either
That's because he's a McPoyle.
@@dcalvitti Oh for sure! I think what we’re impressed by and what makes it work is Jimmi’s fearless confidence despite being a relative unknown at the time playing foil to an all-time TV legend.
Lyle to Dave after the club: "YOU WILL CALL HER!!"
😂 “what’s up wet nips”
Haha I was gonna comment this, glad someone was already ontop of it.
Lol I was gonna make same comment!
😂 I'm SO surprised that I haven't seen more of him after Westworld and Sunny!
Lol! Was looking for comments about IASIP
Jimmi is such a an underrated actor, he has mastered comedy and drama, all his roles are extremely fleshed out and the energy he puts into his performances is a rare sight.
He was great on "House" as a priest having a crisis of faith.
Loved him on Psych! Mary was a twist of Lyle!😂
After all the insults, Lyle’s last line to Dave “you’re my hero” is very touching and a perfect ending.
it's cause he did it with the intern
What's so great about his execution of this character, is he didn't OVERDO it. It would have been very easy to get too over the top with it. And he didn't. It was the perfect balance of charisma and subtlety. Brilliant.
I love how Dave seems *genuinely* delighted by Lyle’s weirdness.
"It's herbal. It's from Japan. It's Japanese."
I mean, I just heard Jimmi Simpson say it, but if I didn't know, I'd've bet money on that being a goddam Steven Seagal quote. Yuck!
Jimmi said he called Dave “Nancy Reagan” as a dare from Hank Azaria. lol
I don't care if this is true or not, I will forever believe this.
The weirdest of the McPoyles, and that's saying something! 😂
That's where he's from! Thanks.
YOU WILL CALL HER!
Apologize. For anything, FOR ALL OF IT
Pappy Mcpoyle might disagree.
"Don't flush."
"oh, and bring an easy friend for dingus over here!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 hardest laugh i had today!
Ive seen alot of guests. This man, is something else. This actor is on another level. He is on another planet. Untouchable.
That was hilarious. Letterman always had the best writers, the best bits. How Leno beat Letterman in the rating was always beyond me.
@Genious.You give Leno too much credit.
Who’s Leno?
Yeah I have no idea. Weird.
Leno was the simple persons comedian. Something for background noise. Letterman made you think. It was cool.
@@jeffhicks2425this is correct.

The real Lyle said it was scripted, but David would occasionally go off-script and force him to react impromptu.
He's not acting. He's a McPoyle.
Drinks room temperature milk before sweating and offering quality advice.
Jimmi Simpson is his name I think
Jimmi Simpson.
I’m digging this whole vibe right here.

“Yam bags” 😂😂
Why is that funny? :D non-native speaker so I'm not really getting it

This is the 50 best minutes of comedy on UA-cam: "No problem, Jessica Tandy--teamwork makes the dream work."
Low key always super happy to see Jimmi in literally anything. Absolute beast
The Fran Tarkenton bit went over people's heads but even though from a younger generation, I caught it. I LOLed
This isn't just gold, this is the whole mine. Outside of Robin Williams and Marty Short, I'm not sure any Letterman guest made me laugh this much.
The best intern letterman ever had😊
Bring an easy friend for dingus over here. 😂
These were so good. We've all known a Lyle

This needs publishing in the archives.
The most random internet trivia. I love it
I watch this collection every month or so, to make me break down crying at the hilarity! I'm going to have it memorized, soon.
It is pure gold.
18:54 "Lyle's callin in a favor..mmkkaaaAAAAYYYY????" I don't know why that killed me but it did.
Jimmi is such a pro. Completely unflappable.
Miss this show. These are some of my favorite reoccurring skits. Hilarious!
The gift that keeps giving...Brilliant segment...Late night television will never be the same...God do I miss Letterman!!!
“Yesterday I saw him slice up a CBS page, little bastard didn’t know what hit him” 😂😂😂
He's great as Liam McPoyle on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and he's not dead!
I’ve watched the Don Giller collection of these so many times, nice to see them in HD💯😭
Love me some Lyle the Intern. Jimmi Simpson is the best Letterman foil.
Paul?!
I was 15 when Lyle first burst onto Letterman's stage, and his and Dave's dynamic was a massive influence on my sense of humor. Thanks for uploading this collection!

7:32 "Im just "Smacking your Bag, Dave" 😂
This was my all time favourite bit! The contempt Lyle always had for Letterman would make me die laughing!!
Huge Psych fan! He played Mary Lightly on Psych, and is so funny. Had no idea this was out there. Thank you for posting!
Thankyou for putting this together!!!, one of my favourite recurring bits, The other being Alan Kalter's awesome and unnerving segments (R.I.P)
Comedy gold! Thanks for making it into one giant post.
Strong “Jen Ralphio Parks and Rec” vibes
Was looking for this comment.
They completely stole that from this dude. Rhe hand next to rhe mouth and all. I was thinking the same.
Whether as Lyle or as Liam ( _Always Sunny_ ), Jimmi always plays a "weird guy comfortably making you feel uncomfortable" character perfectly.
One of the best bits of the show. Right up there with any Big Red segment
Jimmi Simpson is king. These were my favourite segments!!
Jimmy Simpson is a legend. He can be funny or dramatic. Talented guy
Loved these segments back in the day. Thanks for putting the collection together.
3 minutes in, I check the time bar and there’s still 95% more to go, so I pause it, get up, pour a cup of fine, hot coffee, and I settle in. Play…☕️
This was one of the greatest recurring bits Dave ever had. During this time period I would tune in every night hoping for a Lyle appearance. After his last one, it took me years to accept that he wasn’t ever coming back
Such a great bit , funnier than anything on late night in 10 years.
I’m so happy I found my way here today I needed this. I heard Gourley and Rust talkin about him!
I always enjoy a good Fran Tarkenton reference.
"Who cares what you believe, Grandma? You're from Mars."
Lyle is not just an intern... he's a vibe!
The sheer smugness/confidence @ 36:20 after the video of him sleeping on the desk was perfection. We should all have that swagger in everything we do LOL. Great character, great acting.
You won't have Aunt Fran to cuddle with you! 😆
My favorite McPoyle and fave character from the brilliant show It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. Didn’t know he was on Letterman too. Awesome internship!
"Well I love that show, Chuck _Sheen_ is my hero." This was funnier than it had any right to be.
Hvala.
This was absolutely the framework for Liam McPoyle
Liam McPoyle was in four Always Sunny episodes before Lyle's first appearance.
@trev3971 and he's only been in 8 episodes of Always Sunny in total! It doesn't seem possible. The McPoyles really make an impression.😅
Th way this slowly builds is nothing short of amazing!
Jimmi Simpson, the actor who played Lyle, was absolutely brilliant. Just outstanding.
Whenever I see Lyle on another show, I can only think of Lyle the intern.
I would say that too, until I saw him on Psych. Now he is Mary Lightly played by Lyle the Intern. 😂
We're barely getting by without you Dave.
Dave saying he's not allowed to touch the interns 😂
Jimmi kills it in the amazing series
“Perpetual Grace Inc.”
When he said "my boys, Stefan and Ronny", I wanted to be Roday and Hill so bad !
Rudy is damn dynamic in the untethered charisma department!
"You went to fat camp?"
"Big girls need love, too".
The stare 😂
Lyle the intern, the most confident man who ever lived
As far as I'm concerned, this video is the final episode of Westworld.
These were awesome segments!
Jimmi Simpson, I never saw this bit, was in Grad School and missed it, wishing I had at the time, awesome stuff.
All I can think of is his character from always sunny. Lol
Lyle was reminiscent of the classic bits with Chris Elliot. Just full in performance. Comedic perfection!
Yes. This was like a modernized take on those bits
his nonchelant walk off is so funny
I’m in the camera department and I have had interns like this!
I know this dropped yesterday but this is a picture perfect way to start a Friday...
Amazing every time I watch this. He should be in some comedy Hall of Fame for these segments.
Lyle studied Christian slater
and 80s James Spader
I think Christian Slater studied Jack Nicholson. I don’t know who Jack studied though.
Haha, so true.
Westworld that's where I seen him... Hard to not think of him as Lyle the intern lol
for me it was either Black Mirror or House of Cards .. I think ..
The legend.
A missed opportunity for a sitcom, btw.
Nah. A full show would have killed the character. Great in small packages... Horrible after 5 minutes
"an easy friend for dingus over here" took me out
I imagine the pitch for this character was simply, “an intern with the energy of a producer”😂
How many times am I allowed to watch this? It's comedy Gold!
Lets not forget about the joe grossman character as well he was great also, him and Lyle did a few skits together🤣🤣🤣
Still one of my favorite bits. 😂
Jimmi Simpson is the best!
There used to be a complete Lyle the Intern where, at the very end, you saw a rehearsal and the show.
This bit ran over a year. Thats some dedication
The original Jean-Ralphio Saperstein 😀
"We're all God's children David. We all have work to do." Gold.
His walk offstage makes it for me
49:55 ...was this Colbert's interview to take over 🤣 what is he doing there?
20:12
Dave: He's very odd.
Paul: Yes, he pops up in the middle of the show!
Dave: That's the _least_ odd thing about him.
I knew about him but hadn’t actually seen any of his appearances. Sooo funny!😆
Dude. Middle of this I made a connection: he has a lot in common with Jean-Raphael on Parks and Recreation.
The same "living in their own world" attitude, and the hustle to be in "Hollywood" and make money with crazy schemes.
The dude from Parks completey stole that bit from this dude. I was thinking the same on that opening skit. He even stole the hand by the mouth. Wow.
This collection is a gift.
