Spider-Man 2 is a phenomenal game, but it all started with the very first. Our Retro Rebound on the first ever Raimi Spider-Man game is now live! - ua-cam.com/video/4tEDglZdtrw/v-deo.html
The game was truly ambitious and definitely more than just a cash grab latched on a movie. It definitely changed how Spider-man games should be. Another great movie tie in game was X-men Origins Wolverine the ps3 and Xbox 360 version that game was really good too despite the movie being trash.
@@HistoryandReviews I feel like tobey is good at representing anger and there’s some of that anger in spiderman 3 video game more specifically during the morbius level
I completed this game 100% as a kid. Even after endgame I completed all the hero points and I loved every minute of it. There were so many easter eggs in this game as well. The combo system was so deep and revolutionary for its time. This game still has more air tricks for Spider Man compared to all the newer Spider Man games. I wish a remaster or remake of this game could ever be made. That would be so cool.
18:00 I think what helped Spider-Man 2’s case over ultimate is that you didn’t need to do races or find tokens to continue. All you had to do was get a certain amount of points, and just about everything gave you points in Spider-Man 2, so in my experience, I was usually already moving to the next chapter not too long after completing the last one
yeah spiderman 2's progression gives you the flexibility to get points with whatever activity while ultimate asked for specific ones to be repeated a certain number...i wish the newer games could have this type of progression it contributed to the day to day feeling paired with the day/night cycle
Having just beat Ultimate it’s really not nearly as bad as people make it sound. I beat the game in 4 hours and about 30-40 minutes was spent on side activities. So yeah you barely have to do any of them. 5 combat missions, 6 races, 17 tokens, and 20 events which are very short.
As a Kid I played it like the movie because sometimes spidey in the game couldn’t shoot a web( because of reason) and if this happened I just let it happen because I didn’t want to break the immersion that Peter now is having Crises over his powers! Man this Game is a lifestyle😂
@16:28 You can actually run on the side of buildings in spiderman 2. I remember that and looping on street lights were the first things i tried as a kid.
Wow great timing, I literally replayed this game for the first time since it dropped and it still holds up. It took me 5 hours to beat the story and then almost 14 to buy every upgrade. Sucks that there's no reward for 100% everything, so now I just web swing around whenever I want to remember what it was like the 1st time.
Shoutout to the two MVP's for this game: Jamie Fristrom, the main guy behind the swinging mechanics, and Bruce Campbell for his hilarious hints and narration
I'm really sorry to hear that. It's a scary time right now, so I hope you don't get too discouraged. Happy to provide some uplifting content during a tough time!
I disagree. I played it a while back and even after playing spiderman 2018. I still think this game holds up. The swinging is still good and combos may be basic but still fun to do. Everything else. Story, npcs and voice acting is kinda outdated. But the gameplay us still solid
Oh man... I remember playing this on XBOX when I was around 6 years old. Really loved it. Couldn't understand english at that point (I'm from Finland), but games like this and the Harry Potter games made me check the dictionary and learn the language. Video games do teach valuable skills in life. Languages. Patience (thank you Dark Souls).
First of all, I've been watching you since months, and i love your channel and content. You know there's actually a special version of Spiderman 2 which is exclusively for PC, it had graphics and gameplay wayy ahead of its time, which was a reason why this Spiderman was not available on consoles. Console one doesn't compare to that one.
That just is not true man the pc version of Spider-Man 2 is so much worse than the console versions you can’t even compare them completely different mechanics I’ve played both and console versions is the superior version of the game.
@@darthsynerio8270 it seems as if you played either a knock off game or there's a catch, there are 2 PC SP2 versions, one is like PS2 which i call like a HD remaster version and then a completely different version exclusive to PC, now idk which one you talking about. I still like spider-man 1 and enter electro on ps1 but when i played Spider-Man 2 on ps2 i absolutely loved it. Being able to go to the ground was big. I can even remember the house and room i lived in at the time. It’s a strong core memory
This game will forever be one of my personal favorites. I’ll never forget playing this with my brother taking turns on missions. I still quote the line the NPC’s say “there’s always something in this town” 🤣
omggg man this video has me so happy and just bringing back deep memories in childhood. this is so amazing. 1:21 that cute scene i remember vividly just being AMAZED by it. never seen your content till now but you just got a sub lol as i’m watching this i’m now remembering how amazing this game was and how cool it was to roam around on this game especially.
I still remember staying up all night till sunrise on this games release. Having a true open world as spiderman was so mind blowing. I remember trying to explain to my mom how cool and new it was to walk on the streets lmao
Currently replaying the game myself and I'm blown away. The combat is amazing, you can jump cancel and do all kinds of difficult tech that I thought was only in later games. I wish I could record my Xbox O gameplay
When I think of good superhero games, this game is still the benchmark I use to compare other games too. This game went to daring new heights, reached for the stars, and it paid off in spades. This game not only re-defined what a GOOD superhero game was, it, alongside the likes of GTA3, helped set the gold standard for open world games, standards we still see even to this day. It has it's flaws, as any game does. I'm not even going to try and pretend it's a perfect game. But it's still one of the web-slinger's best outings ever made, and if anybody, ANYBODY, wants to be a Spidey fan, they kind of have to play this.
This game is legendary, it has the best swinging of any Spider-Man game, along with a game changing open world. Thank you for shedding light on this classic.
@@HistoryandReviews yeah but that wasn’t game changing. Also wasn’t that great of a game compared to Spider-Man 2. Why do you think no one talks about that game??
@@Infinite_32 right lol, same with early Marvel movies. Everyone wants to mention Blade & X-men, but it was really 2002 Spider-Man that put Marvel on the map.
When i was a child (like 4-7 years old) i could never finish spiderman 2 pc because i would always end up stuck in the bank phase, bc i was scared shitless by a room that happened to be darker than others that contained a group of thieves (or maybe it was just one lol)
The web slinging mechanics were actually made during the development of the first game, but it was so late that they couldn't put it into the game, so they held it off for the sequel.
FINALLY someone respects the PSP game! The last time I heard anyone talking about it on YT they only called it a slog. I remember getting my sister's husband to beat the Vulture for me back in 2009 because he was a gamer, only for him to get stuck too. Now they are divorced and he is refusing to pay ailments for his daughter, and he even called her a crybaby when he took her to the movies last week, but that's another story.
I adore this game and I've played it a lot back in the day. I just love going back to that old - or more like young - mindset and mood of childhood. You definitely deserve the praise from me for this video, but I also have to correct you with at least one thing. You CAN run on walls, but it is not as easy as they made it later. You have to pay attention to the speed, angle and gravity - I freakin love how they made this game mechanics so deep and close-to-realistic. Basically you have to crawl up on a wall, jump forward and when you touch the wall, press spring again. You won't spring forever, because Spidey will lose balance and speed but it is possible to pull it off and later on in the game, to master the races, it is essential
You mentioning recreating the moves makes me remember there was a kind of "Superman Leap" in Spider-Man 3, and I recreated that in my front lawn.... I sprained my shoulder extremely bad doing this and couldn't lift anything with my right arm for weeks.
the main difference between sm2 and usm "bottleneck"-wise is that the former's requirements are just "get hero points," which you can get by doing whatever you want. usm demands you to get like x tokens, win y races, do z combat tours, etc., which is a pretty big difference in terms of freedom. with usm, each bottleneck felt like i was driving down to the store with a grocery list
Man what a nostalgia trip I remember watching the movie and being so devoted. I would play with my spiderman action figure trying to recreate the same scene from the movie again and again. This game was a major period of my childhood and it was the 1st game I thought of when I added a ps2 emulator to my pc after all these years.💙
I just bought this game I haven't played it Since I was young I'm gonna pop it in later today and play it I can't believe you made a video on this I'm glad this game is getting the attention it deserves. Keep up the good work!
There's still a lot to love about this game, like things that haven't been repeated to this day. And there's still a lot in this game that it does better than Insomniac's. Overall Insomniac's yes is a much better game and maybe experience. But like the combat for example in Insomniac's is kind of bland. Like the gadgets are pretty cool, and there is some variety, but they're for the most part kind of one note, and the ground stuff is very, very bland. Like you don't see Spidey dodging and then helicopter kicking a bunch of dudes ya know? You can't web people to poles. You can't even swing around poles. So there's still a lot to enjoy about Spider-Man 2 that you still can't get anywhere else. Like you said there's buildings you can enter and discover stuff, that's not in the newest titles. There's not REALLY side villains in the new titles. Though- admittedly I don't know that SM2 has any side quest villains.. But like the random crimes and things are more interesting in SM2, like stopping someone from falling from a building, or having to bring them to a hospital. Even though it's dopey the pizza missions. Like yeah- point is SM2 still has a lot of great things.
I remember doing a decent amount of jumps in a row without swinging (reason why not sure) but there was the over voice cut in saying this 'So what are you doing in a Spider-Man game and not using web swinging? This is Spider-Man not (another super hero)!' I will not forget that about this game.
I remember seeing ads for this game when I was younger. I wanted so bad but couldn't as I didn't own a PS2 at the time. When I finally got it was impressed by how well-made it was. I mean licensed videogame with a massive open-world, huge amounts of content, AND barely any loading screens? Even more impressive was the world felt sprawling with dozens of npcs moving around and building interiors added. Spider-Man 2 is definitely one of the important games of that generation given the impact it had on other superhero games that followed. Summation: love this game, hope it gets a remake one day.
I loved diving head first off the top of the empire state building with the dramatic fall to your knees and collapse death hahah! As well as the spinning pile driver smash their heads move on thugs from off a building, the combo moves in this game were next level
I remember i got this game in 7th grade (2004) and i was suspended for a week from school so i was putting HOURS into this game. Truly revolutionary after playing spiderman 1
I'm still playing it on my PC at 4k. Its like as good as spiderman ps4 with it's actual momentum swinging and being able to shoot 2 webs at the same time
Loved this game to death as a kid and I like it even more than 2018 spiderman. Theres no other spiderman game as open world as this one. Glad I still own it but not my ps2 anymore sadly
I used to rewatch the trailer for the Spider-Man 2 game over and over from the special features of the DVD, and begged my mom to get it for me. All we had was a PC, so imagine my disappointment when I finally got it. Still pushed through and played it to the end though. But don't worry, I got a Gamecube and another copy a little while later and was finally satisfied.
I played and loved Spiderman 1 on the Gamecube as a kid, but I remember only playing like an hour of Spiderman 2 as I think it was at a friends house or something. Im absolutely going to have to pick this one up soon and finally give it a full try.
The GBA game was a major step up from it's first outing too. Hell, even the DS game was fantastic. Spider-Man 2 was just bangers on all fronts, minus the PC version
16:22 Uhhhhhh... Not to be rude, but Spider-Man 2 totally lets you run up buildings. It actually has one of the coolest most dynamic wallruns in any game ever. There's so much you can do with it and the way it is affected by your momentum makes it consistently engaging, as opposed to the Insomniac wallrun which is just a "hardcoded animation" Just hold sprint as you're pressing circle to attach to the wall and run. And you can charged jump out of it to dash up buildings like a madman. It's like the coolest thing
Not even arguably. It's legitimately still the best, even though WoS and Miles' traversal have their merits too. But none can hold up with what 2 did. I really hope the sequel to the Insomniac game will do some major innovating on the on foot traversal front and be less handholdy with swinging
I just platinumed TASM2 game and I gotta say, probably my favorite game at the moment love the web swinging and the combat even though it was basically just Arkham, sure the morality system isnt the greatest but if beenox had a third game it would be fantastic
Oh how far we have come from this Spider-Man to the Insomniac Spider-Man, it's fun to look back on what we had but it's also fun to look toward the future as Insomniacs Spider-Man 2 comes out later this year (as of the time of this comment of course) Hope Insomniacs Spider-Man 2 is as good as this old classic
I was 13 when this movie came out! Still amazing movie now! Here in the UK, I remember going out and buying my own newspaper because one of them came with a free PC DEMO of the game, I played that, loved it, and decided I'm definitely buying the ps2 game! Which I went out and got day 1 :) I also went and bought Revenge Of The Sith straight away bcus I was so excited for the movie I just had to see some movie clips before in the game before the cinema!
I beat Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 in under 24 hours when I first got it. I got all the way up to the final mission or two in one day. That might explain why I forgot about any level gating.
So excited for this video. Best Spider-man imo, still very fun to play. This was the first game I got for my ps2 in 2004 and I was addicted lol the swinging was absolutely mind blowing and so fun I spent hours just swinging around the city. I loved how they followed some things from the movie but also added their own parts like the mysterio boss battle, and Rhino. This game will always have a special place in my heart. Ultimate Spider-man is a close 2nd to this one imo
The craziest thing about this game and me is I remember loving it and it being one of my favorite games of all time. But I kid you not I never even beat the first pizza mission. I would literally just swing around and beat up people and use the helicopters to get to the Statue of Liberty. That's all I did in the game I never experienced the story cuz I could never beat that first Pizza Mission

Emulate. Jesus Christ
I LOST MY BALLOOOOOON. Still have ptsd from that.
Awesome video as always, Matty. This game was one of my favorites as a kid.
I just watched your SpiderMan 3 video earlier today! I was wondering where this one was.
Spider Man 1 had the most funniest lines. “Circus in town?” “Looks like the freak wants to play!” LMAO
"Looks like the freak wants to play" is burned in my head permanently
I still remember those lines. Also "Look at you, you think your pretty tough huh?"
I played the hell out of this on the GameCube. It was the Spidey game I'd waited 23 years for! It was my favorite Spidey game until he hit PS4
I used to love opening the game and reading the manual in the car while trying not to get it dirty from fast food
14:15 Mane you got wrecked hard ouch!
The voice acting of random npcs were legendary
"GET A JOB!!!"
"YO SPIDEY!"
@@retrorebound8887 "Spidey! Hey Spidey! You the man"
Tobey Mcguire "No you the man!"
@@pizzagamecube2564 "If you only knew!"
@@retrorebound8887 okay one more I just remembered
Hostage "If I could just reach my utility belt"
Armed thug "Whateva!"
I pull out that “stair” move whenever im tryna argue that spiderman 2 is still the goat game.. no other game lets you use your enemy as stairs
holy shit, i love the distillers! Can't believe they were in this game!
I’ll never forget playing this game then watching Toy Story 2 on Christmas Day it was magical
Played this on the original Xbox. I love remembering this game.
The PSP is like Sonic CD, where it stays more in line to the first game while the actual sequel gets daring kicking ass.
In terms of quality, I can't think of a more fitting match in history than this movie and this game
I love your Spider-Man hoodie it's great
Salutations Mr Matty!! 🎯
16:25 but you can run on walls in this game. Hell you can buy an upgrade for it to help you run on walls longer
You can run on the wall in Spider-Man 2 on PS2. It’s the first and only game that lets you run down a wall too.
I have this on GameCube and loved it back then and love it now!
16:25 You can run up walls on this game too. I was wondering why you kept just smacking buildings.
My first Spider-Man game was Spider-Man 3 for the wii. I can’t wait to get 1,2&3 for the PlayStation
There's so much you can do with it and the way it is affected by your momentum makes it consistently engaging, as opposed to the Insomniac wallrun which is just a "hardcoded animation"
Just hold sprint as you're pressing circle to attach to the wall and run. And you can charged jump out of it to dash up buildings like a madman. It's like the coolest thing
I was 9 when this game released I remember being blown away experiencing the open world and being able to web swing anywhere you wanted
I was 18 when it came out.
@@DeadPhoenix86DP I was 9 also but I wish I could've been a teenager throughout the 2000s lol
Do a retro rebound video in the incredible hulk ultimate destruction
i concur! the last best Hulk game IMO
@@pokenescence it actually is the best Hulk game, opinions be dammed. Which other game is even in the argument?
This is one of those games that I got as a little kid cause it looked cool and it ended up being a surprise masterpiece
Still arguably the best web swinging mechanics in a Spiderman game to this day
Not even arguably. It's legitimately still the best, even though WoS and Miles' traversal have their merits too. But none can hold up with what 2 did.
I really hope the sequel to the Insomniac game will do some major innovating on the on foot traversal front and be less handholdy with swinging
@@DestinySpider lmao miles morales beats this game but you’ll nostalgia boner nerds will never accept it so
One of the rare times the movie and the game are both great.
Love your videos mrmattyplays
I've seen The Distillers live in 2019! That's dope they are in the booklet lol
I just platinumed TASM2 game and I gotta say, probably my favorite game at the moment love the web swinging and the combat even though it was basically just Arkham, sure the morality system isnt the greatest but if beenox had a third game it would be fantastic
Keep the content coming!!!
Oh how far we have come from this Spider-Man to the Insomniac Spider-Man, it's fun to look back on what we had but it's also fun to look toward the future as Insomniacs Spider-Man 2 comes out later this year (as of the time of this comment of course)
Hope Insomniacs Spider-Man 2 is as good as this old classic
Spent so much time just swinging around the city! One of my favorite games on PS2!!
Would you consider doing a video were you show your entire game collection?
I was 13 when this movie came out! Still amazing movie now! Here in the UK, I remember going out and buying my own newspaper because one of them came with a free PC DEMO of the game, I played that, loved it, and decided I'm definitely buying the ps2 game! Which I went out and got day 1 :) I also went and bought Revenge Of The Sith straight away bcus I was so excited for the movie I just had to see some movie clips before in the game before the cinema!
This is a great game man I had fun every moment playing this game even the pizza delivery missions
The stairstep attack move is also my favorite move on this
I beat Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 in under 24 hours when I first got it.
You're clouded by your nostalgia the best Spider-Man will always be Insomiac's Spider-Man especially now this game has aged poorly.
@@FireFist5000 it not nostalgia there a genuine argument that some can still have more fun with spiderman 2 ps2
I remember i got the spider man training dvd that came with an inflatable venom and i too tried to do some spider-man 2 moves of it
A1 editing on this video 🙏
The craziest thing about this game and me is I remember loving it and it being one of my favorite games of all time. But I kid you not I never even beat the first pizza mission. I would literally just swing around and beat up people and use the helicopters to get to the Statue of Liberty. That's all I did in the game I never experienced the story cuz I could never beat that first Pizza Mission
Before Marvel's Spider Man came came out THIS GAME WAS THE GOAT OF SPIDEY GAMES none are better
