Is Marvel Ultimate Alliance WORTH IT In 2022?!

- Marvel Midnight Suns is out and gives me that Marvel Ultimate Alliance energy. By that, I mean a group of heroes or villains both well known and not so well known teaming up to take on a grand threat. This trilogy means so much to me and now is the perfect time unpack why so many people value this series.

Both Marvel Ultimate Alliance Games need a Remaster
Another.
Facts that game is 🔥 my childhood
After 3 being so good tbh I just need 4 to follow it up lmao
They already got a remaster I manged to cop both before they where removed from stores
nooo theyll ruin our childhood
I’ll always love the first game for putting Ghost Rider on the cover.
Such a boss move
@@retrorebound8887 Matty, I know you’re slowing down and I’m glad for your health. Do you think you could cover Ghost Rider on PS2 at some point here on Retro Rebound?
@@AlfredFJones1776 Retro has a middle name???
And blade in the claw machine?
& just ghost rider being in the game in general😩💯ua1 was really ahead of it’s time
Ultimate Alliance was a great evolution of the X-MEN Legends I & II games on Gamecube, PS2 and XBOX.
Yeah these two deserve a video at some point.
Would love to see X-Men Legends 3!
Hopefully UA 3 sold enough to warrant a 4th game. If there is a 4th game i kind of hope it is exclusive to Nintendo again to give incentive to buy the next console.
@@zackfair6791 what next console?
@@zackfair6791 eh I wouldn't buy a new Nintendo for a marvel ultimate alliance 4 but I would cop one for ps or xbox I manged to buy MUA 1 and 2 remastered before they where taken off stores
As a kid these games introduced me to the larger marvel universe. Before this I was only familiar with Spider-man, X-men and the Fantastic Four and a few others. Overall I would say that the original game was my favorite, I felt like the story was grander in scale compared to the sequel. Though I thought that being able to play as vilians in MUA 2 was pretty cool.
Yeah same for me
Same, Gambit was the man
Same here 😂
They were the first Marvel games I played on the PS2, I only played the Super Nintendo's Marvel games before that
I already knew most if not all of the key characters from the games from the various cartoons, especially the 90s Spiderman cause it was so loaded with cameos from other heroes. It had everybody from Captain America to the Punisher to Blade to the XMen popping up all the time.
But these games were the first time I'd ever been able to see them all in one place at one time, which was really cool.
Going to tell you over here too - I’m so proud of you for making space for yourself, and pursuing this as a passion rather than a job. You make me happy every day; you deserve to be happy doing it!
Awww thanks!
@@retrorebound8887 Same here man your videos bring a smile to my face when I have a bad day at work.
I love the first Ultimate Alliance. A certified Hood Classic. 2nd was okay and never got a chance to play 3
U never played 3 Wdf u missed out like crazy bro ts was so fun-
@@glockboyspazz5534 not true. the originals were better, 3 was mediocre.
@@ariadnamendoza7458na
A lot of people will say 3 was meh little do they know they had half of some of the devs from 1 and 2 help make it also them same devs are working on Spider-Man 2 right now all 3 of them are amazing
@@ariadnamendoza7458not true? It’s called an individual opinion no one has to believe like you do. Learn some individuality
I know 3 is a mess but man, I had a GREAT time playing it, going through the story and unlocking all the characters and stuff. And how cool is it that both Yuri and Nadji voiced Peter and Miles here too?
All star cast overall
I've only played the first game, but it was my childhood. The cutscenes were amazing for 2006! I had so much fun making teams and getting the little team bonuses or whatever when I put the right people together. My cousin and I would play this whenever he was over. I still want to play the sequels someday.
Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X-Men. His character design is amazing!
Second favorite after Wolverine
Amen!
@@retrorebound8887 BAMF!
These games were too good. The first was amazing and the second was good too. Never played the third
I didn't like the cartoony, comic bookish look of the 3rd one. If it looked more like the first I may have bought it
Always felt that 2 was a departure from the XM LEGENDS series, and 3 is totally a different game that doesn't even feel like it came from the same cloth.
3rd one is actually still good only problem is they removed some moves like grabs and shit but it’s still pretty cool really cool new characters
@@echospace7347 3 is the peak definition of mid. It's so crazy how much worse it is compared to the first 2
@@echospace7347 3 is the peak definition of mid. It's so crazy how much worse it is compared to the first 2
Story in first one was way better. Loved being able to go to Mephisto’s realm and how your choices impacted the ending
Probably an unpopular opinion but i love the third game the most. I agree with all of your criticisms, but the game's moment to moment gameplay feels so much more staisfying and fast paced than the first two. Team building is a ton of fun and the amount of content is staggering. I spent 150+ hours trying to complete all content in the game (dlc included) and another 50+ doing couch coop with friends. Its a blast.
Ultimate Alliance on the original Xbox was my childhood. My cousins and would beat the game multiple times every Christmas when all the fam would get together. Such good times.
Met one of my best online friends playing the first Ultimate Alliance game on the OG Xbox. Still talk to him to this day from time to time! So many hours put into this game. I remember him and I were devastated when Ultimate Alliance brought DLC characters to the PS3/360 versions of the game while the PS2/Xbox versions got left out. Me and him got so mad we actually called up Activisions customer service line to complain. We ended up getting our 360s around the time Halo 3 dropped and ran through Ultimate Alliance a few more times! Such good memories.
Number 1 & 2 were and still remain amazing games. Anyone who got the digital releases back on the PS4 as well as being able to find the download codes while they were active got lucky.
The third installment isn’t so bad, but it’s definitely geared towards gamers who love to mindlessly grind forever.
MUA is one of my favorite series. I still play MUA3 and its my favorite switch game and I have hundreds of hours on it. Currently doing a Deadpool playthrough with Cable, Wolverine and Colossus. MUA 1 and 2 were fantastic too. Spent a lot of time playing them when I was younger.
MUA3 is the best game on the Nintendo switch. I wish the first 2 games were on the switch.
Dude I LITERALLY just platinumed MUA2 and beat MUA1. First one aged kinda like milk with the second one being a marketable improvement with getting more into the stats. The main thing is seeing a world of Marvel before Disney took over was really good.
Haven't played the 3rd one yet unfortunately.
OR, maybe fortunately?
Next to Vice City, Ultimate Alliance was my most played PS2 game. I was originally excited to play as Spider-Man and Wolverine, but it wound up introducing me to a lot of Marvel heroes that wound up becoming my favorites to this day, like Deadpool and Ghost Rider.
Great video. The 1st Ultimate Alliance is great because it carries over much from the X-Men legends games which were fun. The sequels just felt a bit bloated. Hopefully more games like the 1st come in the future.
That doesn't really make sense
@@rainofkhandaq6678 How???
@@doctordoom1851 You'll have to give me some details on why you think they're bloated, then I can respond directly.
@@rainofkhandaq6678 The second story wise, and the third with it's characters. The 1st had a tighter story and an almost perfect cast. If you're looking for a long form debate about it imma have to pass on that dude. I was just sharing how I felt about it.
@@doctordoom1851 eh played the first one recently on ps5 and it was honestly ok not as good as when I was younger brought back mad nostalgia but tbh had more fun with 2 and 3 then the first one maybe if they update it
The first one is my favorite in terms of story and settings, we go all over the place and the threat feels more like comic books.
You don’t know how much money I would shell out for a complete top to bottom remaster of ultimate alliance for today’s systems and graphics. Could you imagine playing on Asgard, the Sanctum Santorum, or Mephisto’s realm in updated graphics?! Omg
the first 2 games were what got me into marvel and eventually comics in general, i just bought a used copy of 2 for 360 again recently and been playing the hell out of it. Ultimate Alliance 3 is fun too but eventually you get to a point in that game where you just have to grind to make your characters able to get the story, that game missing the shared experience from the first two games is also devastating because of how much more necessary leveling is compared to the first games with levels going all the way to 300
Marvel ultimate alliance 2 was one of my favorite games when I was younger
I've heard the second one of these is good but i don't have any friends to play it with, i'd love to try it myself though and i hope you're doing better Matty, don't push yourself too hard buddy, health comes first :)
Thanks for the vid matty, loved this classic
Man, you brought me back with this video. Not sure which Ultimate Alliance I played since it has been that long, but I recall playing one of them. One of those games had an Atari game reference I am not too sure of, but if you know, you know.
MUA1 had Pitfall and Breakout
Not sure why I'm just now discovering this channel, but your insight and in depth info on the game is awesome man
thanks for the content!
Absolutely worth it 100%. these are some of the best marvel games out there. along with X-Men Legends 1 and 2, can't be beat.
I’m super late to the party here, love the video- I really truly hope you cover X-Men Legends (both the first and second) if you haven’t already done so. My little bro and some of my friends growing up and I all played XML2 extensively, hundreds of hours spent because while MUA builds on XML in meaningful ways, we always felt like XML2 was a truer RPG experience and we felt like our character/team builds had more weight behind them. Truly fantastic games.
The character for me that I discovered and loved ever since was both iron fist and moon knight. Ghost rider and blade were also amazing, but I really like iron fist with the chi and moon knight being Batman but with a white costume. And learning moon knight kills! Like Batman could never.
But in defense of ultimate alliance 3, I think of it more of a milestone in history. At the time, we had to distinguish who had what rights to everything. Sony was still "in charge" with the producing and whatnot for spiderman as the Tom Holland movies were still in respects to Sony. Not to mention the multiverse movies still haven't came out at the time. With everything still seemingly segregated as to what properties are owned by what company, it was crazy to see ALL of these franchises back in one place. Crazier that Spider-Man was in a Nintendo exclusive game. Then to top it off, fantastic four dlc along with a campaign that almost acted like a fantastic 4 movie. That's not even mentioning the x men finally getting back with the avengers and going to the Xavier mansion and seeing juggernaut tear it down and getting locked in the danger room. Marvel vs Capcom couldn't even have mutants and I think it released a year before. So even tho I really hate playing the game, it has the most characters, it includes an arc in attilan, it actually reboots some character personalities that mix comic and movie iterations, and it jump started the license sharing that is somehow already being over saturated.
Excellent video. I played the first and second and my favorite is the first. I had put so many hours in that game and enjoyed every bit of it. My favorite hero is invisible woman. Her attacks we just so fun and super controlling. I would love another one to come out
Gosh this games (especially the first one) were such a highlight in my childhood. Whenever I go to the local games store they always had the opening cinematic for MUA on repeat in their TV and I was so hooked. Finally got it on our psp and the number of hours I spent playing is insane, I enjoyed it so much it would be a dream come true if we ever got another installment for the newer consoles.
Must've been a sight to see.....

@@ariadnamendoza7458 What?
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 are hands down two of my favorite games. My son and I went through and beat both 1 & 2 on PS3 last year and it was such a blast. I think we will get some more controllers and have my daughters jump in on the next round. A classic couch co-op that never gets old on my book. I just wish I could still get all the DLCs for them.
This game played a huge part in my childhood because it helped me grow up to love superheroes especially Marvel heroes. I already knew a few Marvel superheroes before this game as a kid either from movies, tv shows, and games like the Marvel Superheroes fighting game but this game in particular was my introduction to so many characters that weren’t popular or that non comic fans never heard of before the MCU became a thing
Man love your videos and such a massive fan.
was searching midnight suns videos and algorithm dropped this. I love your content but this is cool to see. MUA was great back as a kid!
Moon knight is my favorite Marvel hero I found from this game!
I would have never knew about MUA1 if my best friend who bought a 360 with MUA bundled inside and said " I didn't like it, maybe you should take it home and play it seems more like your style." Man was he ever correct on anything I would like. Played it til my 360 died
Awesome friend 👍🏻
i cant praise you enough for this video thank you my guy you got a like
Elsa Bloodstone is in the new Disney+ Werewolf by Night special presentation. It’s pretty good!
Great video my man. Literally most of our childhoods summed up tbh. I'll say Ultimate Alliance: Special Edition or Gold Edition will ALWAYS be the standard next to X-Men Legends II & Marvel vs Capcom 2 as far as Marvel Games. MUA2 wasn't bad I just disliked the fusion moves in lieu of the ultimate attacks from the first title. Definitely made each character feel less unique. Haven't gotten around to trying MUA3 yet but definitely plan on getting a Switch just to play it. I'd also recommend to anyone to check out X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse on the SNES, amazing soundtrack, as well as X-Men Children of The Atom on the PS1!
God Matty the constancy of this channel is amazing so much love❤
I haven't played MUA-3 yet, but I love those first two games. I remember Thor being pretty OP in those games.
And I'm sure its been said already, but if you like the MUA games, you should look into the X-Men Legends games.
There's a DC Superhero game that's a lot like those X-Men Legends/MUA games, but I can't quite remember the name of it. It might've just been called Justice League Legends or something.
Justice League Heroes?
@@_cameroncarey_ Yep. By Snowblind who first brought us Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath, and Champions: Return to Arms. Great games. All of 'em.
I played the heck out of 1 and 2 on the PSP. They were great on the go.
I love this trilogy! Thanks for giving it done love Matty! I have 1 and 2 on ps3 and psp and ofc 3 on switch and I’m stoned for switch port of midnight suns - here’s hoping for a great port!
MUA 2 was my absolute favorite out of the trilogy.
The OG Ultimate Alliance will always be goated. I find myself replaying it every few years and this video just made me redownload it again
First ultimate alliance really got me into marvel stuff when it first came out in high school. I liked marvel but I only really knew the X-men, iron man, hulk, and Spider-Man from their animated series in the 90s, and then blade from the movie. After this game, I got exposed to so many others and basically got me completely hooked into the comic books
MUA 1 is my favorite too, and looking into the mods to add or switch out characters for it. For anyone who is new to Marvel Comics, MUA is definitely a great door because it takes the player all over the Major character story arcs in the Marvel Universe. If you are only familar with X-Men? Then get a bit of Fantastic Four, Avengers, when different levels facing different Marvel properties, definitely satisfying.
Sir Matty, as a huge fan of the ultimate alliance series. May I request you do a rebound on X-Men legends. Also by raven software, I consider it to be the og of marvel arpg. As Kotor is to Mass Effect, X-Men legends is To ultimate alliance. Great video Mr Matty. ☺️
I played a lot of x men legends on PS2 back in the day. Great game. I didn't get around to playing the second game sadly. MUA3 is also pretty fun but its kind of disappointing how bad Scarlet Witch is gameplay wise.
X-men legends is where it’s at!
a new X-men game is much needed right now
Those games can soft lock if you don't play the way it wants you to.
I'm in the same nostalgic boat as you with the first game. MAU 1 is the single reason I consider myself a marvel nerd today. It explored so many characters, so many storylines, and had so many comic book details. If another Marvel Ultimate Alliance game could have it's level of depth, it would sell so well
I remember getting this game guys and it didn’t work on my 360. This was when I was about 5 years old I loved looking and keeping myself fixated on the physical copy of the case. With all the cool marvel hero’s and didn’t even know at the time I just seen spider man ! Hill, wolverine and iron man etc. I never got to experience the game since. Until now because with my allowance my money this week I’m buying the special edition that I’m compasses the dvd.
Great content as per ❤
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 is such a great game. Love how many hero and villains were in the game and it’s pretty much a love letter to the Marvel universe.
Ultimate Alliance is my favorite multi-character Marvel game. I had played other Marvel games before it, but this was especially great at expanding my understanding of the Marvel universe, thanks to its multiple locations and characters.
I think Marvel's Avengers could have served the same function, if it wasn't so focused on AIM (the setting is more similar to MUA2 than the original game). Hope the game manages to really expand in the future, but I'm sadly sceptical.
I love your videos, I miss so much going to my friend's house after school so we can finish these games haha
just replayed the first one on my ps vita over the past few months while at work, so nostalgic!!
Raven was also taken off non-CoD games after Singularity didn’t sell & Raven became just a CoD content factory, so MUA 2 & 3 are by different developers. I think you should have said that in your intro to MUA 2.
God I remember the first one. It introduced me to many characters, especially the Golden Edition. Only played the first one tho, loved it
Always preferred the X-Men Legends games to the Ultimate Alliance series cause I always felt the presentation was better (series should have stayed cel shaded). First Ultimate Alliance just felt like they were trying to cram in as many characters and locations as possible it never felt like cohesive to me. MUA3 brought that back a little bit for me story just had a better flow to it and you just had some great and memorable moments. Black Panther gets a hold of the Soul Stone and which causes him to be surrounded by the ghosts of all the old Black Panther's. That was awesome
I would love if you did a review on Jade Empire from the Xbox. One of my favorite games of all time with a real story, betrayal, different characters and dialogue choices actually mattering with your companions, and so much more! I think it would be a great add for your channel!
I recently just got the digital collection of MUA 1-2 on PS5. I could’ve cried with the pure joy and nostalgia I felt playing MUA1 again after over 15 years. It brought back such good memories from my childhood.
How
🧢
Played this game back to back as a kid 22 years later wondering where tf is the remake, and discovering it’s still underrated especially with all the marvel movies coming out every year
I think it might just be a coincidence matty that it looks like it was a mobile game at one point to some that’s just the way they wanted to do the progression system maybe so you would spend more time grinding up the characters
Literally just found this channel and you have a sub from me. I very much enjoy that you actually play the games I did.
I miss when the X-Men were regularly in games.
Always loved how I’m that carnival level you get blade from a claw machine that was so dope as a kid
24:49 You probably know this already, but Elsa Bloodstone finally made her mainstream debut in Werewolf by Night on Disney+. Now you have another rabbit hole to get excited about. lol
Thanks for sharing this video! I'm just old enough that I was largely introduced to Marvel via the deluge of 90's Marvel cartoons on Fox Kids. But I love this game series just like you! Still one of the most fully realized representations of these comic book characters as they properly exist outside of the movies.
I hope you're enjoying Midnights Suns. I can't put the game down. I'm on day 32 in-game and I'm having so much fun just playing random maps, I still don't even have Cap or Wolverine unlocked.
All the best!
Love the content Matty. Will you do an Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction retrospective someday?
Civil war is a company wide event from 2006
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was my first introduction to Deadpool as a kid. Just played through the first game again recently, and I’d say it still holds up really well!
Amazing games, my hope is if the old champion games and such continue to sell on Sony (idk about other consoles as Sony has been my choice since ps1) sell well I hope all of these are next I would buy them all if they were given real serious HD treatment.
Whats frustrating is that there Is no legitimate way to play marvel ultimate alliance 1 with all the characters including the version exclusives. The only way I'm aware to do it is by pirating the game then modding it.
Love you Matty forever
Now you gotta do Ultimate Spider-Man 😱
Or not. I missed that you already had a video on it. I’ll have to check that out after this
He already did
I would love If you did a video about the X-Men legends games! X-Men legends 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games of that era.
It would be, if it were still available digitally. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if it still was on Steam. At first, I thought it was pretty boring until I found out you could switch your powers in-game. The only reason I found that out is modding, and the scene is incredible. There’s so many new characters, costumes, and powers that modders have implemented by now. Some aren’t as good as others, and they’re on a forum in which plenty don’t have pictures so you have to experiment. Most of the mods are really nice and expansive.
Just got this back in my life today and.... I can't believe how long its been 😭 the gane is absolutely glorious!
I had this on the ps2 and it was my first introduction to Deadpool ! Still remember my core team being Daredevil, blade, Deadpool and black panther
Absolutely love the first MUA game. It came with my original 360. The only thing that I didn't like was that the game didn't truly have a new game plus. Those pre rendered cutscenes still look great today.
MUA2 was a step down but still a really good game, I think I've actually pumped more hours into it then the first one, mainly because I never played it until other was available on PS4.
Never played the third one, but I'm currently going through the spiritual predecessor in Xmen Legends.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance, 1 of my top ps2 games , the memories that cameback when i saw those scenes are just amazing , i really wanna play it again
Marvel ultimate alliance was a part of why I've been a marvel fan my whole life, and even if people say there's a fatigue (which they've said during phase 2) I'm still gonna be a fan of it and just about anything superhero related
Keep it up Matty!
Marvel Ultimate Alliance was the first time all these great characters were brought together so it was huge back in the day. It introduced me to Deadpool and Moonknight, 2 of my fav's to this day.
deadpool teleporting was so awesome. Such a goat game every area in the first one was so unique like I was straight up absorbed in this game when I was little going to Asgard and like hell and stuff, such a great game and you don't see that anymore for real. This video made me want to play this ASAP fuck finals
Many memories with this game with my brother and dad. 10/10 game some parts were dull but its still fun.
Awesome video!
One question so if I buy the Gold Edition the DLC is not available on disk like the Special edition you have? I wanted to know before I spend over $100 on the Gold Edition.
This game really modeled me to make good choices in life because when there were moments in the game when I didn’t do them. The consequences terrified me when I beat the game.
THEY ARE. I love these two MUA games. Especially the first one more. Glad to have physical copies on PS3/Wii and digitally on PS4/5.
The third game sucked.
Got my first copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance at a GameCrazy back when it came out! It came in a “duel bundle”, that came with Forza 2!
That opening is directly from the comics
I still go back and play the first game every year on my PS5. I really liked 2 & 3 but number 1 is the best to me. Made me a true marvel fan back in the early 2000s along with the X-Men Legends series.
I never knew black panther so I would always use him. This also introduced me to beta ray bill and Neymar. When I have kids this will be their first video game If I can get it. There are 2 types of people in this world. The ones who learn from everything else and the ones who learn from ultimate alliance
I really miss these games I remember playing with my cuzzins and even aunt we loved the first one especially always played as a team
I wish you could get the first 2 games on steam nowadays. I would really love to play them again, very much enjoyed them back in the day
Got to the final boss fight in M:UA 1. Three characters down, only Storm left standing. Absolutely demolished Dr. Doom. And now, I cant make a team without including Storm. She becomes the main character as soon as she's available to play. I was about 11-13 back then, now at 24, I still remember the cringey yell I bellowed out at the end.
Currently playing the second on coop with a buddy. SO MUCH FUN!
One of my favorite heroes I first met in Marvel Ultimate Alliance was Moon Knight. Was so excited for the show but tbh it wasn’t gritty enough. But by far the biggest credit for MAU1 is because if it I read comics like secret wars with Doctor Doom and he is my favorite villain of all time.
For anyone wanting to get a good look into the marvel universe, this is an EXCELLENT start. I wish I could say the movies are too, but as fun as they are, a lot of movie adaptions tend to completely alter the essence of characters for the sake of general audience appeal. I'm happy the MCU has done what it's done, don't get me wrong, but a LOT of misconceptions about characters has come out of it (for a recent example, RIP Moon Knight fans lol). That said, this series is a great pallet cleanser and introduction into what a lot of these characters are ACTUALLY like. It's great!
I have vague memories of playing these games as a kid waiting for my dentist appointment. Used to be one of the few times I was happy to go as a kids lmao
