I had this for Console and DS. The DS port was uniquely amazing because so much of it was just like the console version while also clearly being designed for the DS. Unlike the Console version, the DS was a 2D side scroller, but it has the same character models and animation, same shell-shaded art style, same comic book style cutscenes (only they're optimized for the dual screen and they're still images), same voice acting, same music, same story, it's very true to its console counterpart, which is surprising for a DS port.
I have this game, never finished it as a kid so I'm working on one hundred percenting it. The gameplay is awesome, web swinging feels natural, the human torch races are a ton of fun, and the combat tours are a fun way to explore the map without swinging. I'm not a huge fan of the story myself but that doesn't really take away how fun other parts are.
I was 8 when this came out and my brain couldn't understand how the game wanted me to eat a child... I literally just felt so wrong doing it. After I did I just sat and looked at the kid hoping he was okay because he was shaking. Damn. Now I run over civilians in GTA like a psycho 💀
I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts on the unofficial Carnage game: Prototype. At least under the lens of "hey this game let's you live the fantasy of being Carnage without any of the proper license"
I remember my younger brother getting so deep into this game & watching him play it. Such an amazing title for its time. I dont know that I’d want a remaster, but darker, more involved comic titles would be my thing. DC does it…..would love for Marvel to do that. The old man Spider-Man graphic I read years ago rings a bell.
Ultimate Spider-Man was the first comic version I read. I grew up with the cartoon in the 90's but the comics seemed inaccessible with such a deep history. The ultimate line was such a great concept.
It was like the easiest mission in the entire game lol The hardest chase was probably the one where you have to chase that jetpack guy (I don't know how he's called) and this one where you chase Venom as Spider-Man. Not only Venom has freaking high jumps but also he sometimes goes such a way that it's really easy to lose sight of him.

Personally I would recommend the PS2 version of the game. I've seen comparisons of the other versions and the PS2 version looks the best. The *least expensive version* of the game would be the Xbox version. But the special limited edition version of the game is exclusive to PS2.
Have this one on the Gamecube. Easily one of my favorites, sometimes when I feel like playing on the console Ultimate Spider Man is easily the top of the list of games that I just sit down and play and have a blast with no matter what I'm doing
Great game and so many fond memories with it. I loved playing as Venom and replayed that boss fight against Wolverine a million times. I even had a Spider-Man PS2 controller my dad gave to me. Deserves a roaster and more recognition for sure!
You just brought a flood of nostalgia I forgot I had with this game. Used to spend hours and hours on it. I don’t even remember if I beat it or not, I just remember I gave it to a close friend of mine who I’m still friends with to this day. Yes I agree with you, this DEFINITELY needs a remaster, or at the very least, I hope Insomniac incorporates more from this game into the next Spider-Man title. The first game showed us Avengers tower, a Wakandan embassy, Lockjaw statue, Nelson & Murdock’s office, and Rand Enterprise, so I would love it if Daredevil, or Iron Fist would show up, or hell, a race with the Human Torch! I’m down for that rematch!
This game deserves as much praise as the spider-man 2 game but has better pacing and the story for this game is so good it became canon to the comics it has good gameplay , great traversal , imaging story and graphics that look impressive to this day even tho it came out in 2005
I love ultimate Spider-Man so much that game and marvel ultimate alliance as well as incredible hulk ultimate destruction came out in 2005 when I was 10 and I had so much fun playing them back to back to back I spent hours swinging around as Spider-Man jumping around as hulk both of them are my original favorite characters so getting to play as them in their own games was awesome
I never forgot this game. This, the first, second, and third Spiderman Movie games, and Friend or Foe all have stuck in my mind. With Ultimate, I never could get past the Beetle fight...
This was such an awesome game one of my all-time favorites I'm so grateful I grew up in the PS2 / GameCube era so much nostalgia looking back on this game
I remember trying to get this going on an emulator but the graphics were all messed up. Did enjoy this one as a kid, the artstyle reminds me of the game XIII which was going for that same comic book style
this is one of the few games i ever played on the ps2 as a kid this game is a very big reason a bought a ps2 as a adult now i am also on a journey to collect and play a ton of ps2 games i never played
Love this game. Have it on Xbox and had the Gameboy version as well. Loved the art style, faithfulness to the source material, the open world, gameplay, great music and an interesting story. It's so underrated and it has aged very well imo. I want a remake, that would be cool but it might not happen. Can't believe that it's been forgotten 18 years later.
I still have this game on my old XBOX. Loved it as a kid, I played the heck out of it took me years to finally get it to 100% complete also getting the Black Suit.
Just replayed after it being a childhood game of mine. I still think it’s good but you were right about city goals. Going back I was surprised how short it was. Without city goals you could probably beat the story in a couple of hours
When it comes to the city goals you’re only ever required to meet a certain amount of combat tours, races, city events, and tokens. You don’t have to go back and get silver or gold to advance the story. Tokens and city events are so easy because they come by naturally, but if you honestly just did five or six combat Tours, and races. You will literally never have to do it for the rest of the game, unless if you wanted to unlock all the unlockable‘s of course.
The only problem I have with this game is the removal of the dedicated dodge button. The spider sense mechanic carried over from spiderman 2, but they just expect you to jump to avoid attacks rather than having that dodge button. This works fine in boss battles, but during the harder combat tours its so frustrating. That's why the venom combat is so much better.
Wolverine and human torch are 2 of Spider-Man’s best friends. In the ultimate universe human torch, Spider-Man, and ice man were roommates before Peter dies
Both Ultimate Spider-Man and Web of Shadows can be played on PC if you want smooth big resolution, no pixels etc. You can also apply visual mods to boost the image.
FUN FACT: One of this game’s gimmicks was that (as it was written by Bendis) it was actually canon to the Ultimate Spider-Man comic. However it later got tossed out, when they did the War of the Symbiotes arc.
Love this game. Had it on PS2 as a kid (which I still have) and bought it on Gamecube about 3 or 4 years ago from a used game store for I think $15. Crazy seeing the prices it's going for now
I want more marvel games with the comic book art style that ultimate Spider-Man, incredible hulk ultimate destruction and the X-Men legends games have almost all the recent ones have a hyper realistic look and I just want them to have a unique artstyle
It’s crazy you bring up the city goals, my little brother n I had this game and we could never figure out how to progress 😂😂😂 we did the intro / tutorial, and then we couldn’t even get gold vs human torch so we never got past that part…didn’t stop us from playing for hours haha
Man, im now remembering a Spider-Man game that my friend had when we were kids that was also comic booky in looks but you could unlock hundreds of different spider suits. Can’t for the life of me remember which game it was. But, Spider-Man 2 will always be my favorite Spider-Man game. I remember trying it out at Best Buy and my dad getting me it for Christmas. I played that game a ridiculous amount and played it for years and years.
Regarding Human Torch...they didn't add him randomly but rather it's because he was in a bunch of issues of the Ultimate Spider Man comics around this time. It fit both the narrative and gameplay as well.
I replayed it yesterday and there are things I gotta say. The comic book art style makes this game look really good for 2005. Sure, there are some minor flaws but overally it hasn't aged that badly. The web swinging is worse than in SM2 and SM3 but still it's enjoyable and very smooth looking. The combat is quite repetitive but there are some cool moves. Now, there are unfortunately many things that aren't so great 😕 First of all, the missions. There are missions where you have to chase someone. It isn't very difficult but some routes are hard to figure out if the enemy is fast so you'll often end up failing the mission because of losing the enemy. The worst thing is that many of these missions do not have checkpoints, so if you manage to not lose while chasing, but lose during a boss fight, you will most likely have to do the chase sequence again. It's especially bad during one of Venom's missions where you have to fight with soldiers and helicopters. Not only the helicopters deal A LOT of damage, there is NO checkpoint during this mission at all, so you have to fight, then run to another place and do it like 3 or 4 times which is really hard and if you fail, you start from the beginning so you have to endure this torture again. It made this game really annoying to me. Another thing is, as you mentioned, side goals that we have to do in order to unlock the story mission. They aren't that difficult and do not take a lot of time but I'm not a fan of story missions being locked unless we do something a specific amount of times. It was obviously meant to make this really short game a little longer but the point still stands. So yeah, this game is as frustrating as it is fun. The direction of it was pretty interesting so it definitely would be a good idea to remaster it.
The cool thing is you can still play the P.C version with no need to deal with the screen problem thing and there are some cool R.T.X mods for THE ULTIMATE SPIDER MAN game that actually enhances the graphics
One of my top 5 Spider-man games. I never unlocked the black suit though because I couldn't find all the tokens. I would spend hours and hours looking for them untill my ps2 eventually kicked the bucket and put out that whole operation. Once I found out that there's nothing do after getting it since you just 100% the game it and it wont carry over to a new save I wasn't too broken up about it.
Quck criticism: The progression towards the next story mission is not invisible. You can check it from the pause menu, and it tells you exactly what events you need to do and how many.

Crazy seeing the prices it's going for now
been waiting for someone to do a video on this gem
I want more marvel games with the comic book art style that ultimate Spider-Man, incredible hulk ultimate destruction and the X-Men legends games have almost all the recent ones have a hyper realistic look and I just want them to have a unique artstyle
One of my favorite spider-man games so fun and underrated
I still have this gem on gamecube. I got stuck early on as kid but I’ll have to revisit it after watching this 👍
I believe that the reason you first feed off a kid as venom is just to make fun of those Spider-Man 2 ballon missions
It’s crazy you bring up the city goals, my little brother n I had this game and we could never figure out how to progress 😂😂😂 we did the intro / tutorial, and then we couldn’t even get gold vs human torch so we never got past that part…didn’t stop us from playing for hours haha
This game deserves a remaster asap and I will be there day one when the day comes upon us.
I’ve been replaying this game since last week, my favorite venom by far
Really wish I heard of this game when I was younger :(
Man, im now remembering a Spider-Man game that my friend had when we were kids that was also comic booky in looks but you could unlock hundreds of different spider suits. Can’t for the life of me remember which game it was. But, Spider-Man 2 will always be my favorite Spider-Man game. I remember trying it out at Best Buy and my dad getting me it for Christmas. I played that game a ridiculous amount and played it for years and years.
Perhaps you're talking about Activision's Spider-Man for PS One ? It came out in 1999
Regarding Human Torch...they didn't add him randomly but rather it's because he was in a bunch of issues of the Ultimate Spider Man comics around this time.

^ I still play this game to this day ever since it was released❗️🕷🕸
I played this in Xbox back in the day. Hell, I still have it, actually. It was an excellent game.
my all time favorite Spiderman game, venoms locomotion and vibe so good.
At the time was the best spiderman game 😆
