power steering fluid. check it. I had a whiny noise when turning on my b5 a4, my neighbor heard it as i was backing out of my driveway, and said it sounds like your steering fluid is low. Sure enough it was completely empty. He's a mechanic, so he topped it off for me, and no more noise.
for those who need a fix, look at my comment on this page. Do not change your steering rack because the sound will get back. You only need Lithium white grease(not wd 40 or other) and the fluid that runs your steering wheel to be full. Cheers.
I solved this on my 2007 audi a6. The sound is actually coming from the UV joint at the bottom of the steering column near the clutch peddle. Get some white lithium grease and blast it all over the joint and where the steering column comes from the engine bay into the cab. Mine is sorted by doing this
+Cameron Nate i have the m........ f......... sound for an year and is steel here...you sure it was that simple ? i don`t belive it...tomorow i m going to try this thing....10 out of 10 mecanics didn`tknow...
+Mdg k1 dead sure mate... you will see soon as you hit that UV joint. WD-40 worked too but soon burn away due to the heat of the friction caused by turning the wheel so I used WD-40 heat resistant lithium grease and that's done it for me
+Cameron Nate thanks a lot, it really worked with that white lithium grease spray. I tried wd40 but due to that heat it burned away....to bad that this fine car has this rookies problems, i am very disappointed, i had an opel g before from 2001 and never ever had this problems...Again, thaks a lot.
i have same problem with my 2017 q7 (not that bad as the video) from the steering wheel. Also every time I brake to stop,my car has the knocking sound. They said it is normal, but I plan to try out in different dealership
Just one more point: I had checked the fluid and the pump, and everything seems ok! However, BMW guys know what it is, because they have solved the problem... for a while!
I have the same, was looking on forums, it says (I translate from dutch): This is from an official AUDI internal memo if I understand well: With the A6, from chassisnummer 4F 7 N 169150 With the Q7, from chassisnummer 4L 9 D 015770 Solution: Refresh the oil of the steering servo system with hydraulic oil G 002 000 A2 (Pentosin CHF 11S). There is 3-4 liter (1 gallon) hydraulic oil needed to completely flush the system. If necessary, a modified power steering column needs to be installed.
...the box had not been really replaced the first time! Because I thought that I was not going to know weather this time the replacement was made, I gave up that replacement but they did something on it, because it disappeared for some months. However, it cam again and now the noise has been getting worse and worse with time. To pay so much money I prefer to wait for a true break! But I am very unhappy... even though I have to say that besides that problem, the car has been fine so far.
I don't know for sure what's making the noise, but the dealers say it's nothing serious. I'd have to change the whole steering wheel if i'd want to remove that noise. Anyway, I have an appointment at the dealer's tomorrow and they will probbably replace the slip ring because my MFSW buttons are faulty.
Listen here. I had that piece of s*** of a car, an audi A6 2006 2.0tdi with a lot of factory problems i wish if i could and was not poor to light a fire under it, but so... That sound that made me very mad and annoyed it s comming from the place where the steering colum goes through the floor, near the pedals down. There is a motherf***** RUBER all around the steering column that isolates the hole where the steering column goes through the floor outside the car. Now all i ve done it s get some liquid white grease spray and sprayed a hole can of a spray on it (THAT RUBER-"GATER "that its all around the steering column down near your padels)while i was turning the steering wheel back and forward. It tooked allmoust a week before the sound stooped. I think that it s the time for the grease from the spray to reach everywhere there. Sorry for mu bad speeling, i am Romanian and it s my second language. Cheers and don t buy a Audi from 2005+!!!! i have 1.8t 1999, and no such problems like the new ones.
my 1999 saturn sl2 started making this noise yesturday. same exact squeaking sound. What could be the problem, and does it need to be repaired? if so how much u think it would cost?
Thanks God! I have just the same problem, but with a BMW 5 series bought in 2004 (E60)! The noise first appeared 2 years after having the car, so it still was under guaranty and the brand told me they replaced the full steering box for free. However, 2 years later the noise reappeared, and I went to another BMW garage where they said they needed to replace the full steering box again, for 2500€! Then I told them that I could´nt afford so many replacements, but then they told me...
If it is that rubbering sound, check the upper struct bearing. When it stopped working, the sprint will rub against the rubber and make that sound.
