I was playing the first 2 at a local gaming/internet cafe back in the late 90's. Me and some friends even rented the whole cafe one New Year's Eve and spent all night playing Carmageddon, Starcraft, Fifa, Quake 2. Fun times.
One of my all-time greatest bits of "how the hell did they do that?" game technology was the car body deformation and detachable body panels in Carmageddon 1 and 2. This was at a time when other car games didn't even have scratchable paintwork, but here's this weird blood-splattered novelty game with absolute top-tier driving physics for the time and an industry-first solid body deformation system. People tend to remember these games for their shock value and how upset they made politicians and concerned parents groups, and far too often the incredible technology on display gets ignored. Stainless did absolutely incredible work and they deserve more credit for pushing games technology forward.
..and still I prefered the software rendering (and still do). Your brain fills in the missing pixels. 3DFX was just a blurry mess and callous. Same with Screamer btw. - played in software mode. Quake was a bit special if I remember correctly ...the performance became a problem and hence I 'had to' use Glide/3DFX, doesn't change the fact it looked like crap. It took a few years until textures and became hires enough and polygon count rised enough to make 3D accelerated graphics look good. Around GTA3 and BF1942.
So much nostalgia, i really loved playing the first games when i went to an internet cafe in 1999-2001 Then i got internet in 2006 when it got more widespread and affordable.

i remember when seeing spinning wheels on a moving 3d car was considered a technical breakthrough for games. Carmageddon TDR 2000: We've got wobbly spinning wheels.
I love Carmageddon! Started from the original, spend so many hours playing it. It's still really awesome. Carmageddon 2 was really good, some of the missions were hard, needed much practice to win those. TDR I had issue with timer. I mean you get only so much time for running over people, crashing opponents so I would run out of time like every race. Reincarnation was great but needed really powerful PC to run it well, also wish they would have added something little more like tracks, cars, different pedestrians, more variety and it was quite short. Wish they would make new Carmageddon game like Carmageddon + Carmageddon 2 put together + adding much more features, bigger maps, cars, pedestrians, more gore, more customizing options for the cars, maybe even mode when you are the pedestrian trying to avoid getting run over. Something unique to the series...
Tdr did have its issues but still perfer it over the newer versions anything past tdr is pretty trast and the newest are just basically graphic updates to melt ur pc lol Like you said I wish they just added to the new ones and even revert to carmagadon 2 with new Vehicles pedestrians Maps I would be absolutely happy and glad they would purchase it I don't even care about like the 1997 graphics. Actually bigger maps were counter productive. We had a much bigger industrial map in grey box but you never could find anyone (especially with true 3d maps) and we opened up and filled in the space between roads on coastal C and it suffered with the same problem of having too much space….
The original is still the best. One of the things i wish they added in Reincarnation is the old drivers actors or at least drivers voice reactions because after a while it starts feeling like a depressingly mute world.

Carmageddon 2 was amazing, TDR was a bit too bleak for me back then, I think that catered to an older audience than I was at the time. But man, it was painful to grind out some things in it :D Not sure I could do it today..
Carmaggedon was released in June 1997 and the female character you can choose in the game is called Die Anna. Later that year princess Diana died in a car accident.
I played C1, C2 and only the TDR 200 was great, it was tough, it was a challenge and a lot of nice graphics. A difficult game but that was what I meant, I was looking for something to prove myself, I cursed a lot, I kept losing on missions, a tiring game for tough players, my friends said it was too difficult and they prefer the older versions because they are simple.
Hm how did you get it running so smoothly in 3dfx & 4k resolution ? Struggling too get like 27fps + here running 1440x900 with nglide for 3dfx compatibility.
I tried to record this moment for a very long time. The game must be GOG version. The game directory contains several exe files and only one of them works correctly. You must use a dedicated emulator DOSBox SVN 0.74 I recorded this game 3 weeks ago, so I don't remember what I did exactly. Since I record a lot of old games on window 10 - this is really a problem.
I am a fan of the saga, and I also like Carmageddon Max Damage (2016). Beatiful maps to explore, car design and power abilities. However, car handling is really bad, and that of finding a good crash is hard. They should have made it even more "arcade". Also, additional maps and car packs could have enriched the game, which unfortunately seems dead.
I remember a friend of my dad had a computer strong enough to run games back in the day. I loved going over there on Friday nights with my folks coz he'd power up the machine and let us play these games. Epic. He had one of those Viper phones too! :-)

And the graphics jump was huge. My favorite level was C2 the one where you had to wipe out all pedestrians and one was standing on a big rock. Had real hard times to get up there. But soooo awesome

Here in Germany, the original ps1 Version was censored Like hell. Zombies instead of pedestrians and Green blood. So silly by modern Standards. Lucky me, i Had a Game Buster and the Red blood Codes, so Everthing was fine

The controls , visuals, dmg models and crashes and overall feel just was not the same anymore! personally kinda threw me off a bit. guess i enjoyed the older jankier builds :P Anyway, cant confirm this is the fault of THQ... since i donno rly what happened behind the scenes, im just a rnd person on youtube - so ignore my previous saltiness. Im sure wreckfest still fun, but... I preferred older builds b4 the game went to console.

They weren’t as pixelated if you used high-res mode by adding -hires to the end of the CARM95.EXE shortcut which doubled the resolution to 640x480. Made it look more like the iOS version of the game. Mind my rig at time was likely classed as high spect vs the game specs. P200 MMX, 32mb of ram, 4mb Matrox Mystique 2D/3D card, 4mb Diamond Monster 3DFX accelerator card & 2.5gb Seagate Medalist Pro HDD. Ahh those were the days.
From those that didn't reapear, what drivers from carmageddon 1 and 2 you would love to see recieve the HD upgrade? I dunno why, but maybe Buzz Lightweight. Was the first guy i got on Carmageddon 2. A very light and fragile guy, but kinda agile and nice if you want to win by laps. Would love there was more AutoScum members, too. Loved the pink desert buggy xD Sylvester Stallion's Mustang with propelers on the headlights was cool, too

Having that nerds face up there should have been a staple to the series with updates expressions not just taken out completely, sad day.
Carma 2 was ok, but Is still prefer Carma(Press 1 for 3DFX) splat pack, because it has more content.

Don't forget the damage model, you could even split car in a half, in freaking 1998!
