Id argue that atleast from my point of view. Most people play their armies from an overall mood and aesthetic. People like elves just because theyre elves the rules are just a convenience. What attracted me to dark elves was i loved the art works and design, they just have a badarse presence.
I tried for ages to bring my Orcs and Gobs to events and had to change to Skaven because it was too unbalanced. Thankfully I’ve had some time with them in 9th age. Looking forward to trying out all these factions!
One of my most prized miniatures is a Handmaiden of the Everqueen. To make her a general so I can have hordes of Sisters of Avelorn sounds really good!
"Seaguard have always been a staple, since they were introduced"... no they were not, so much so that we got an army themed on them in 6th edition Storm of Chaos (with a really super OP rule... shoot everything before the game starts!) to make them more appealing...
I'm guessing that the Arcane Journal for the High Elves will feature a revamped version of the old Sea Patrol list and then a sort of "Elven Emissaries"/"Elven Expedition" army that allows for a lot more allies. The other option would be a Yvresse "Mistwalker" list inspired by Total War Warhammer 2, but I think this is still before Grom's invasion so we probably wouldn't see that.
It's long before Grom's invasion, IIRC. That said, that being so means Yvresse is likely to be in a better shape. Rangers are implied to have been pretty much wiped out in Grom's invasion, for instance, so if and when High Elves get new models, I can see that including Rangers. Personally, I'd also like to see them make a Cothique unit so each of the kingdoms has its own special unit.
I am looking forward to this actually. There are some stuff I miss but I am so far satisfied with what we see. I am excited about the idea of creating a Caledor theme army since I use Caedor as my aesthetic. As for why I like high elves, well they are elves. They have dragons. And there are a lot of other reasons. Great video!
High elfs have some really cool stuff this edition Sure magic has been nerfed in terms of damage output but the levels of utility you get out of some of the lore (particularly high magic) is super useful... and your mages even get to re-roll a single casting attempt per turn as well Sea guard work amazingly with how the new rules work as they get initiative 6 when charged from the front (4base + 1elf reflex +1 spear) so you can even strike first when charged They also can stand and shoot from any range (that count towards combat res now btw) and get to reform afterwards as well so you string them out to get max shots and then block up to get rank bonuses Aaaaand Swordmasters are actually insane this edition, with no step up they can strike first against any ini3 unit charging them with a s5 ap2 psudo killing blow attack... all for 14 points Also you can get a T6 9W prince on star dragon with a 2+ save 5+ ward and 5+ regen... so basically unkillable
Please we got the favorite honors we need a light cavalry honor for Ellyrion, a cheriot one for Tyranoc, the islands of the dead, and the colonies. Eltharion still has his region to do. And we know we can just dig more into those honors that are already in book.
Love the options and the special rules look sick, but I think we'd have more magic in our lore than most of the factions. Only three spells while some armies have 4 is just kinda weird to me I guess. Fantastic video though and really appreciate your insight.
In a way, the magic system might actually be a better representation of how elves use magic than the eight lores. Elves had no barrier to learning multiple winds (High Magic requires it, in fact), so it's probably more likely that any given Mage is going to have a set of spells drawing from multiple winds that are optimised for a specific purpose than sticking to one wind. Wizards being limited to a specific wind was something that was primarily implemented to make it safer for humans to use magic.
Striking last with two handed weapons was already just silly, considering that two handers are often more agile and quick to use than single handed weapons. Hopefully they update the Spear Elf models.
High Elf armies offering more opportunity for regional flavour than the Empire makes sense, since regional units have always been a significant part of the High Elf list (from 4E on, anyway). The Empire's regional flavour, by contrast, was mostly confined to the fluff and didn't really make it into the army books. One could certainly hope for that to change over time, especially with the game set at a time when the Empire was much more divided, but at the moment both armies seem to be pretty straight updates of what existed before.
@@timmybaldock7724 yah if you look at the Caledor honour you'll see you get full plate armour plus the dragon armour rule. So its no longer equipment but a special rule.
I may have to make a saphery army. I'm a sucker for turning generals that don't usually have magic into magic users. I mean in AOS my general is always a wizard wightking that I cast endless spells with.
a 6 up ward save is 6+. Never seen someone write it as +6. +6 looks like its a modifier to a roll. Its plus 6 to something. Like the lion cloak is +1 to the armor save. So your your 4+ armor save becomes 3+....because it got +1
@@Nubloot Good to know. I was just looking at what is on my shelf that has rules. Probably going to use my Maiden Guard champion as a Handmaiden, Maiden Guard as Sisters of Avelorn, and the Everqueen as just a Mage.
Everqueen will be killed by assasin in less than 30 years, after that will be Alarielle as new queen. It is covered in Tyrion and Teclis trilogy with ending at Finuval plane battle about 230x (dont remeber exact date).
I think the old Maiden Guard has been made into the Handmaidens now - there were always only supposed to be about a hundred of them, so making them characters makes sense for such an exclusive group. While Sisters represent a more "rank and file" Avelorn unit.
Lovely overview of the high elves. A superfluous nitpick though. It's pronounced 'Krace' like in christmas or chronic not 'Thrace' or even 'Tj'race' like champion as some people do.
@@TheGreatBookofGrudges Ah okay. Sounded like you were pronouncing it like 'shrace'. I'm pretty sure it's with a hard 'k' sound. A lot of the elven names are based on greek and etymologically speaking that would mean the hard 'k'. Come to think of it, I struggle to name a single word beginning with 'chr' that doesn't sound like 'kr' like in chrome or Chris. I also pronounce 'arch' like ark. To me an 'arch' with the 'tj' sound is a type of structure. Oh well maybe it's just me being overly pedantic. I thoroughly enjoyed your faction breakdown. Thanks!
I want to get into the Tabletop but........ I sadly don't have the Patience and soon, not the time to be painting the miniatures for said warhammer tabletop
Cool review! Would using Lumineth Realm Lords models be appropriate at all levels of play? Assuming they had some conversions and proper basing so they weren't confusing of course. Not familiar with GW's modeling policies for this game.
I've never seen the Lumineth models in-person (I'm a salty sort who abandoned GW after they killed Fantasy) - but so long as they can rank up properly, I'd be fine with it?
So Phoenix Guard fight in 2 ranks if they charge, and otherwise in 3 ranks? How about spearmen, how does that work? Oh and how many ranks of archers can shoot?
Been playing HEs for decades now. None of these 0-1 per x points are in anyway a restriction worth worrying about it you want to make a decent all comers army lol. Almost wonder why they even bothered
GW wants to make Old World into another Esport game so they're adding restrictions to make the armies 'balanced', even though in Fantasy you didn't tend to have the issue of spamming the strongest stuff like in 40K.
More expensive is part of the fragility thing. Individual elves, at least when it comes to characters, are not really any less durable than their human counterparts, but when there are significantly less of them the losses hurt more. Human armies don't have "frailty" as a downside not because they're individually tougher, but because they're more likely to have the extra bodies to absorb losses.
I wonder what new stuff they will add to HElves...or DElves too. Especially to DElves since they could use something really fun (*COUGH* MAGMA DRAGONS *COUGH* *COUGH* DAWI-ZHARR COULD USE THEM TOO *COUGH*).
GW is playing it safe for the moment by not reintroducing the full Warhammer Fantasy range. Hopefully, once they see how popular Old World is, they'll bring everything back.

Dragon Armour gives 6+ ward save. Is that on top of a normal armour save? If so, does it count as light, heavy or full plate?

Is there any information about what kind of terrain there might be?
Do the honours stack wiith magical gear?
Cons would be that there are more expensive or am I wrong ? Just imagine the elite of the elite having the same amount of units like the Empire(
You hit the nail on the head, you can get 3+ empire trops for 1 swordmaster, and close to 2 empire spearmen for 1 HE before

1 unit is 1 model in case of lion chariots. Tiranoc chariots can be 1-4 per unit.
