One other tip. If your engine suddenly dies or sputters on the water, pull the shift kill harness out of the distributor. The shift kill switch may have malfunctioned and stalled the engine.
The kill switch goes in the purple ignition wire from the run position of the ignition switch. It doesn’t go in the start wire which is sounds like you’ve been doing.

I’ve been trying to install a kill switch to my 1987 sea ray and i nearly burned my starter down. Any advice to what wire to connect it too.
