- Last time I had an experience with Ratchet and Clank with the 2016 movie, it left a bad taste in my mouth. However, this review will have me revisit the franchise in it’s true form with the original PS2 Ratchet and Clank game. The duo may not be good movie stars, but in this review, I discover why Ratchet & Clank is among PlayStation’s best.

You know your movie based on a video game is bad when the movie’s tie-in game is infinitely better and has more of a cohesive story (and has a legit good sense of humor). Case in point: the Ratchet and Clank movie might not be that good, but the 2016 tie-in game is really good.
I actually enjoyed the tie in game and never watched the movie, it was great.
I wasn't a big fan of the 2016 game's story, though I agree it is better than the film's and the game play is still pretty fun. The funny thing is the story was based on an earlier version of the film, like a lot of movie tie-in products.
Good humor? #gadgetron? Or was it skidd telling me he's hungry for the 20th time.
@@plexyglass429 Just because I said it has a good sense of humor doesn’t mean all of the comedy works. When I say “good sense of humor,” I mean the bits that openly mock the “game based on the movie based on the game” idea and anything meant to be legitimately. Though I admittedly forgot about the bits with Gadgetron and Skidd (Skidd only appeared in one side mission, hence why I likely forgot about it).
@@EmperorScrat You can't really mock something while doing the thing you are mocking, its not satire at that point it's just cheap and lazy "hey guys we KNOW what we are doing is lazy so shut up"
If you like the Original, I recommend the next two games with the next game having a HUGE improvement for Ratchet and all three make a good story arc for Quark.
I highly agree, as only playing the 2002 version of Ratchet and Clank is a good start, but playing the original trilogy (the 2002 version, “Going Commando”, & “Up your Arsenal”) would be much better! I also don’t mind if Animat chose to review other Ratchet and Clank games further on past “Up your Arsenal”, because I find it to be interesting for people to dive onto rabbit holes of video game franchises that they were once new to.
I’m glad you enjoyed the OG game, Mat! While I was never into the franchise, I do however ADORE the art style, characters and worldbuilding that went into this. 😁🎮
While I personally have a soft spot for the movie since it was the first thing from the franchise I ever checked out, This was the first game from the franchise I ever played. A crack in Time was the first I completed. There's a janky but fun charm to the original.
OK, so what exactly is the issue with Ratchet's portrayal in this game? Because Ratchet wasn't really in it to save the galaxy and to stop Drek, he was more interested in setting foot off of his desert planet, see what the rest of the galaxy is like and meet his number one idol Qwark. So when Qwark drops him and Clank into a pit with his pet Snagglebeast to die, it would make sense that Ratchet would take a lot of his anger and frustrations out on Clank cause Clank led him into that trap and would instead put all his attention towards getting revenge on Qwark. It's not really about making him likeable, it's more so that he's relatable than anything, cause who wouldn't feel the same way when being led into a trap and nearly die from it? We see his whole arc in this game where he does get revenge but then realises that Clank was right about the dangers Drek would cause to planets and by that point, he'd have come around and learns to put others before him.
It’s great that you enjoyed the original game of Ratchet and Clank (since you hated the horrendous 2016 film), and I wish somebody can make another Ratchet and Clank movie that is NOT the 2016 movie.
If they do ever make another film, it should be from Sony Animation.

If you wanna continue of playing more Ratchet and Clank games, I really want you to review “Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando” and “Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal”, as *I think* it does improve the issues that you have on the first game (even though the only Ratchet and Clank game I ever played as of right now is “Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters” on the PSP while I got to watch a lot of gameplay of other Ratchet and Clank games on UA-cam)

I personally loved ratchet and clank 2002 because that game was really awesome and tons of fun in my opinion.

I'm happy to see the game getting an 8/10. I may not be the biggest fan of Ratchet and Clank but I do have a admiration for the series. All I have to do is play Rift Apart on Steam.
The amount of time I spent playing this franchise of games as a kid was ridiculous. I was always eager for the newest one. also if you don’t get the RYNO before the Drek fight, you’re in for a slog.
Didn't expect a review early this week. Now tell you the truth I never really played the R&C games. When it comes to PlayStation 2 games, I consider playing many Tie-in games, whether from Pixar, LEGO, or Nickelodeon, Mostly SpongeBob-related.
For original IPs, I once had PacMan games with "Mario-style" gameplay like "World" and Kart-races, and the most I played that could tie in with R&C are the Sly Cooper games.
I used to play hard on those games until I reached 100% (Or at best 95%) and I still can find a lot of charm that I wished was made more for a movie. Like say they were like "The Bad Guys" in "Zootopia". In them, you have to learn how to steal, be sneaky, and fight out crime lords and mob bosses. While also avenging Sly's raccoon family from crooks who killed his father and stole his family's book. Always fun, though I never got to the 4th one and There has been no announcement of a 5th anytime soon since according to fans it has been left on a cliffhanger with Sly being lost in time.
An unexpected review but a gladly welcomed one. I grew up with Ratchet and Clank, and when I heard it was getting a movie I was initially excited, until I watched it, leaving me disappointed. I haven't played *every* game in the franchise, but I did play a handful of them, and recently plan to play the rest, since the first game really left an impression on me. It really established my love for SciFi, space, and action related media.
I agree that Ratchet himself comes off as a selfish jerk, making him dislikeable, but I think it has its charm. I find it interesting that the main character, that's supposed to be the hero that we root for, is flawed instead of being this perfect or goody two shoe character.
I played this game along with Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal on the Ratchet and Clank HD collection on my PS3 years ago and I had fun with all of them. I never watched the 2016 movie, but after hearing what others think of it, I think I'll just stick with the games. I like that he now has a much better experience with this franchise than the last one he had with it. Also, I do find it funny that the character that was Animat's least favourite in the film is one of his favourites in the game.
I never thought animat would review actual video games again.
AniMat disliked Ratchet & Clank because of the movie reminded me of an old friend who hated Shrek because of Shrek the Third because it was their first Shrek film they have seen

This was my first Ratchet and Clank game I have ever played ▶️ and there some Ratchet and Clank games that I played and some that I have yet to played. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️

Oh if you think this game is decent, most of the rest of the franchise is even better. They involve less money grinding, the weapons are more crazy fun and evolve as you use them, and there is a surprising amount of development with the main characters. You'll especially notice the latter in the PS3 main games.
Is there a chance you can make a 2nd spin off channel on reviewing games like say Crash Bandicoot or Spyro or even Jak and Daxter or my personal favourite Sly Cooper?
Now to wait for Mat to play the next two PS2 R&C games (Going Commando is one of my favorites!)
Going Commando is my 3rd favorite in the franchise. (Nothing beats Up Your Arsenal for my #1 spot)

I watched a playthrough that was over 8 hours long over the course of a week. It really does look like a fun game. Ratchet was really mean, though, and that Eastern Egg you were referring to with Starlene...yikes 😬. That would definitely get the developers some angry emails these days. Great review man.
Just to give you an idea on Ratchet as a character in games after the first one, Ratchet appears to be more kindhearted and less mean-spirited and even caring towards Clank. It’s even evident in the most recent game Rift Apart.
Well, this was unexpected. I'm still surprised ya don't review games too often compared to your usual recent movie reviews nowadays. Most of them we're Epic Mickey-themed and still wished ya reviewed more games to keep balance.

Ratchet in the later games is less of an asshole. Also his voice is replaced by James Arnold Taylor

I do like the OG 2002 game but it's still has flaws I can't overlook, Like plotwise I hated when Ratchet was being a dick to Clank after they found what Qwark was working for Drek, It just continues to bug me every time, Thankfully they changed his behaviour in the second game.
You should review the Kingdom Hearts games!

Okay the paying for a character to continue is actually done before in previous Insomiac games Spyro 2 and 3,by introducing to Moneybags a sleazy greedy big fat bear with a moneybags his holding. He always blocking some platform or a hidden door to mini games and even learn a new move like swimming, climbing,head bump in order to gave him some gems. The more you adventure in some stage or level,the more expensive gems you need to pay him.
Glad you were able to give a second chance to the Ratchet & Clank franchise after the big first exposure you had through the 2016 film and while it’s understandable you feel your criticisms on the film were much harsher, it’s understandable for someone who was never familiar with the games and I think if you had played the games before, your review would be different. Just glad to see you have a better time with the iconic video game duo.
And yikes! Not remembering to fulfill the amount of ammo you last have when you respawn and having checkpoints be scarce and enemies regenerating?! To quote the AVGN: “That means some f***ed up masochist actually programmed it that way.”
Honestly, I didn’t mind the 2016 movie. It’s not as a good a movie as what could’ve been made with this franchise, but it’s not horrible by any means. It’s not the Emoji Movie, Norm of the North, or FoodFight. I think Chris Stuckmann said it best, it’s more “aggressively mediocre” than anything.
Agreed. Although I do have a soft spot for both The Emoji movie and Norm of the North. I have an emotional connection to Emoji movie since it came out when I needed it the most during Junior High and I admittedly enjoy Norm of the North ironically. Foodfight... I knew what I was getting into but I admittedly had some fun with it. I'm a guy who loves bad movies sometimes.

But at least he has a personality. In RaC PS4 he is just a copy of Clank. Without any own personality.

Also i like the 2016 game and rift apart. I haven't seen the movie yet but i'll probably watch it in 2024. Rip 94 minutes of my life next year!

This is the only video game I came close to beating on my own and never got to finish, beforehand it was my brother's who were always the ones being victorious in beating video games.

Great video! Yeah, I'm a longtime fan of the series and the movie was TERRIBLE. Pretty much everyone in the fandom agrees.
I think playing all the games over the years before you watch the movie makes the mkvie better. A lot of the jokes and references are lost on people that never pkayed the games.

Actually ratchet does get better in the later games, heck this might be why he’s such a generic nice guy in the movie.

I have played Rift Apart, more or less to justify the $500 PS5 purchase.

I really would like to say something I really disliked so far, 10min in the video.
First I have nothing against you, or your look, but it becomes really boring to just watch at you, while you talk about a game, you could have just shown random clips from, even when it is long clips of just playing. Just to have more motion and "action" in this section.
I don't have to leave your channel, to show you a good example for what I mean. The Calliou video I came from. You have mostly the entire time footage of the show. it is mostly random clips, but it removes the static "boring" background.
(I said "boring", because I don't want to insult you roomdesign :))
