The Most Memorable Radio Advertisement Ever Produced

- Tony Schwartz produced more than 26,000+ radio spots, won every award in the books, and became known as media central in New York. A one-man band creator who threatened large corporations and institutions with his simple radio commercials.
He was one of my first mentors and I learned a great deal about how to communicate from Tony. His two books, Media: The Second God and The Responsive Chord are classics for students learning media communications and production.
In his time he worked for hundreds of organizations including the New York City Police Department and the fire department. This radio spot is a perfect example of his genius. It is so simple and yet so effective. As I said in this video, my wife and I never forgot the message after hearing it once and it helps save our home when it was about to burn in a fire which began in my studio, destroyed much of my archive, but did not destroy our home. Had she not closed the door, all would have been lost.
Tony also produced hundreds or radio and television spots for political candidates, both Republicans and Democrats. You can search his name on my UA-cam channel to see examples of his work.
Whether you are beginning a career in video or filmmaking or a seasoned pro, Tony shares advice that will provoke you to be a better more effective communicator. - Фільми й анімація
TBH, they need to put the “Close the Door” advertisement back on the air because I didn’t know about that.
I had never seen or heard the "Close the Door" clip. I doubt if I would have thought to close the door if I had a fire but I expect I will never forget it now. This should be remade and rerun now.
I don't even think it needs to be remade. It's just a guy talking. It's timeless. In fact, the radio image and the quality only reminds us of how time tested and true the information is. It should be rebroadcast for sure, though.
It is so good to see you live. Thank you for sharing.
me looking back over after half paying attention:
David: -AND HE'S THE GUY WHO DID COKE!! 3:20
I was so touched by every part of this video. That policeman left a legacy through his words. Tony Schwartz left a legacy through his work and the emotions he evoked. David Hoffman is leaving a legacy by helping people remember humanity and the lessons of the past. Your content and messages are always brilliant, David! I think you’re a genius!
I'm uncomfortable with the word genius but I thank you for your compliment. I think I'm very good at what I do. It's my core competence as they say in Silicon Valley. Sometimes the results are brilliant in my view. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, money, time, carelessness, I mess up.

I had a Greek man in my life some years ago now. He said little but so much.
Today, I share his pearls of wisdom.
Well I'll never forget to close the door now.
. This is so wonderful that this man wanted to help others as he was dying. Thanks for sharing this.
David, as he shared with you, you mentor me! Stay safe and sane, my friend!
He really was a genius. Thank you for sharing these wonderful, heartfelt clips. Now I understand why you have a whole playlist about quitting smoking.
This is beautiful David!!!
I love this channel. The content is always excellent. Btw: that man was definitely a genius.
I was so confused about why this only had 26 views and then I saw that it's unlisted- so that's why I never got a notification about it.
I'm interested to know. How did you see it Kate if it is unlisted?

@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker I was at your channel and it showed up!

I love the videos you post! New favorite channel new subscriber found you on my suggestions ❤️
Welcome.
David i have always been interested in the past and about people perspectives of life back then and history pretty much...I wanted to say that the things you post make me learn alot of things about others....i am thinking of being/doing something like what you do, documentation or just being a film maker 😄
Make sure you find my class on making documentaries on my UA-cam channel. I have posted 4 classes so far with the next one to come in the next few weeks.

I borrowed $10K from my father in 1977, and purchased a Motorola Two-Way Communications dealership, which I owned an operated for nearly 42 years. Most of my labor and sales income came from municipalities which maintained police and fire departments. County-level municipalities, and "Troop J" of the Pennsylania State Police. While I never heard it while repairing or installing "Motrac", "Mocom", and "Micor" VHF land mobile radios, into Pennsylvania State Police cruisers, I did manage to hear the commercial one Saturday evening, during a southeastern PA county's "weekly system-wide radio check; and police department roll-call'.
The script went something like this: "KIZ-537, KVN-537 to all cars and stations, PREPARE TO COPY", which was the perfect segway into the PSA. I never heard it after the
mid-1980
's , I believe that by this time, cigarette taxes, and the cost of medical coverage skyrocketed. I'd never known the stories behind any of this, which is a great addendum to history.
Thank you for sharing these moments, they are important. ~Peace
Wow. I would have LOVED to have known this man. Down-to-earth, extremely perceptive, an "artistic pragmatist". 🤍
Excellent video. Really left me smiling.
that commercial did have an impact
i cant remember the last time i saw a cop light up
I just found this channel. I really love all these videos, looking back at how people were.. and from the standpoint of someone who has become very interested in cinematography.. I really just started about two months ago and still have MUCH to learn.. I hope I'm as successful as you have been throughout your life! Thanks for the videos.
You are welcome, and thank you for your comment.

Why isn't, " close the door" still around? Still valid. Still memorable. Thanks David.
I've heard it on the radio a few times in the last few months, in Anchorage AK
A powerful video covering a lot of topics in a short time. Smoking, friendship, closing the door if there is a fire. It would be hard to forget closing the door after seeing that.A mentor is someone most of us need sometimes. The speech was very good. Thanks for making this video.
Right On...
Thanks David.
David, the nature of your long career makes for a wide range of topics on your channel. It’s always a surprise and you never know what you are going to get but it’s always interesting.
Thank you Paul.

David this was so good...I enjoyed it very much.
Thought provoking piece as usual, David. Thank you. Times haven’t changed. In politics, people assume the worst in others. In person, they assume the best. I wonder if people still think Barry Goldwater would have caused the annihilation of the planet?
Darn it David... you made me cry again...
Thank You 😎💕
Such a powerful video! I've got goosebumps
What a wonderful perspective this man had on life. And it made all the difference in his life's work! And its effect on those who he touched.
Thank you for noticing that, Colin. It is true that my perspective has had a very positive effect on my life. And I am hopeful daily that it positively affects others.

This is one of my favorite videos that you have created. Powerful footage here. Tony Schwartz was brilliant and you were there. I was moved by his work and you telling the story. I even was given such useful advice - close the door! Thank you David Hoffman - filmmaker
I've heard it said, if you need a new idea read an old book. In this case listen to experience.
My dad had cancer in the 1980s, before he met my mom, from chewing tobacco. The doctor said they were trying to get tobacco companies to put warnings on the labels.
The man in the video, who had cancer, was not exactly lucky, but he was lucky to be straight. AIDS patients, as I understand, did not get that kind of support, sometimes not even from their families. And they are still not teaching about the AIDS crises in schools. He was "lucky" that his disease was not controversial and associated with homosexuality.
Thank you so much for this video. Both your friends saved a lot of lives. And I'm really glad to know to shut the door.
I’d like to think that about 55,000 people quit smoking after hearing this. That number is 10% of your followers. That percentage is one that is commonly stated in studies of people in the general population who have quit smoking after a traumatic event caused by smoking.
Thank you for posting this.
Thank you David. I've been lucky enougth to never pick up smoking
You are a fortunate man to have had such mentors in your formative stages as an artist, and to have used those opportunities well. Thanks for sharing these moments.🖤🇨🇦
I wish we could produce sane advice like this today. But someone would politicize it and make it worthless.
Exactly. Today's commercials are nothing more than materialistic drivel. The only message is, go out and waste your time and your money.
Very interesting, thank you
This video inspires me both as a person and media student. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you so much for sharing this my good friend. 😊
Wow!! Such a good video!! Never heard,or seen as such,45,i am,this has got to be the best video i watched so far!! Thanks Mr. Hoffman,my eyes are open!!
Thanks David. I subbed to your channel through a music documentary of yours. I started smoking over 30 years ago after a bad traffic accident, couldn't complete my education, gave up developed bad habits and never thought I'd reach 40. Now in my 50s, maybe with prostate cancer and disability, I think this video is the push I needed. It certainly made me stop and take a good look. It can be harder to pass exams when I did so well before, I suppose that's what a high speed collision does besides breaking bones. I'll be watching more of your inspirational videos. Perhaps I'll not just be motivated, but put in the effort to make something better out of my life.. Kind regards 🇬🇧
As someone who has 3 Border Collies...They ARE training you to be their servants!
Great video
awesome people
*close the door*
Agree whole-heartedly with your def. of mentor, and typically friends too, because on the same wave-length. Great radio spots: close the door, NYPD, curb your dog. The coke ad was interesting to me because I could hear the big ice-cubes kerplunking in the glass; back then ice cubes were bigger, heftier.
Thank you David for sharing, I have been on UA-cam for hours and I have be debating on going to get a pack of Cigarettes
I want to finish, but after watching this, I definitely not going too. Thank you 🙏❤️
Thank you Sandra. I am pleased that it helped.

Wow, I vividly remember the Daisy Commercial. In fact, I think it prompted my first political debate with my dad. And the Coke spot. Like you, I learned subtitlies often taken for granted from -- afar guys like Tony Schwartz -- your mentor and the "rest of the story" details I learned from a fella' who became mine. David, we are fortunate guys.
I'm watching the "Daisy" commercial and I'm thinking, David, did you make a documentary after the assassination of JFK? I'd be interested to see what you were doing then. We all remember where we were--and I will never forget even though I was only 5 then--the impact that event had on my family.
Great trip in the time machine, David. Thanks again.
Profound
Hi David, I've recently been watching a lot of your old films on the 1960s and they're truly fascinating to me. For this I can only say thanks. I was also wondering how and why you got into filmmaking in the first place?
That's a long story, Noah, and maybe I will make a video on it sometime soon. But it was the right decision for sure.
David Hoffman filmmaker
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker absolutely. I'll keep my eye out for that video if it comes round anytime soon my friend 👍
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker I'm interested in that story also, it should be very interesting. Stay safe guys.
did the daisy commercial really defeat goldwater? it was only shown once
goldwater simply couldnt sell arch conservatism
that had to wait for reagan, who served it up with a smile
Wow.
Interesting person
Genius
♥️👍⚘
Oh my goodness you’re so young
I wonder if that little girl with the daisy was Mellisa Gilbert from Little House? It sure looks like her!
Monique Luiz is her name.
At the five-minute mark it gets weird
HEY David will you grow a mustache for us, or is it gone for good?
Daniel. My wife doesn't like it. End of story.
David Hoffman filmmaker
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker Yup I guess that settles the mater .
Johnson was one of the major criminals, just seeing his name in the ad repulses me.
People today won't even wear a mask to save themselves from a raging pandemic since it has been so politicalized. It's not even new knowledge because in 1918 people wore a mask to save themselves. How are we going to fix this nighmare?
3 years later, it has become worse. I can only remind about how San Francisco saw a good summer in 1918 with the numbers, took down masks and then in the winter, San Franciscans REFUSED vehemently to wear masks again. In the end, they saw in the winter the worst months with the numbers of dead people from the Spanish flu.
We have the same now with sickness numbers. There is an easy measurement. And still 98 % outside won't do it. They accepted Long covid or think that repeat infections are the key. Heart diseases on the rise also in young people.
