Most Films Require Budgets. My Way To Find The Money For Production Works. David Hoffman Filmmaker

  • I have been making documentaries for over 58 years. Thousands of them. Million-dollar budgets. Thousand dollar budgets. $5 budgets! Long form. Short form. Television. Cable. Commercials. Educational films. UA-cam. Public presentation only. Nationally. Globally. Home movies. Family vacations. And in making all of these films and videos, I have performed in every role - producer, director, camera person, videographer, soundman, writer, editor, narrator, and distributor. To become a "filmmaker" I had to learn every one of these important positions by doing it firsthand.
At any level from a beginning amateur just creating home movies using their cell phones to top professionals in the documentary space creating feature-length documentaries) I have made six) or television specials or series, what I have got to say will help you get better.
It's not about technology although I referred to that in this class and try to help people understand what's important and what's not. It's about how you think and what you see and mostly what you hear.
Making documentaries is extraordinarily wonderful. And then away, anything that isn't thoroughly scripted is a documentary of some sort. Most of what I see on UA-cam is "realistic", a questionable term when we have things like reality TV, but being real and credible is the essence, I believe, of making videos that attract, that stick with audiences, that create legacy.
Every time I create a budget for a video or film, at any level from home movie to feature-length, I learned a good deal about what I am going to do in advance of having to do it. I make fewer mistakes. I hope that this is helpful to filmmakers and videographers in creating more likely to be successful finished work.
This is the fourth lesson in my 10 part series. I do hope that you take the time to watch it as I believe it will have value for you. Here is lesson #1 • This 13 Minute Video P... .
Here is lesson #2 - • If You Are Making A Do...
    Lesson #3 - • Making Documentaries C...
Lesson #5 - • Most Films Require Bud...
    This is Lesson #4.

I don't think people realize how much effort goes into making a good documentary. I worked as an editor on a 2 hour doc and I had to wear many hats in order to get the film finished on a budget that the producers could afford.

This came just in time! My work is in Visual Arts (painting) and writing but I have been having to make simple videos for my work lately and I love the process.
I was just thinking the other day that it would be fun to make silly skits or short films and wondered how to go about doing that. This is helpful!!

@David Hoffman Hi David, a wee bit off-topic but still on the subject of making videos, and especially vlogs - I am so happy that you don't use the 'technique' used so much nowadays, of switching between looking to camera and profile shots with a second camera. It really bugs me whenever I see this in videos. I do understand using a profile shot when the speaker is talking to an interviewer sitting next to the camera and is actually looking at them rather than down the lens in the front shot. But it just looks so 'copy-cat' for no reason when we know there is just the speaker alone with a camera in front and another camera on the side. I don't want to diss people's creative work, as I do admire anyone who is creating anything of interest to others, but *I'd be interested to hear what you think about this particular trend?* Sending many thanks from Scotland.

Not these days. School isn't critical. But getting work for professional skilled independent filmmakers is. Get yourself any job working for somebody and then use that to quickly decide what you are good at and what someone else may be better at. That's how you build your 1st crew.

@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker - I assume that the majority of viewers have found your channel watching your documentaries (like me, myself, and I - about the Vietnam War), hence the high number of subscribers. OTOH, not every viewer wants to become a video creator. Producing documentaries is another beast, especially as the standard YT content creator is simply creating their VLOGs using a standard pattern that is promoted all over YT and by Google itself.
There might also be a "generation conflict" as media, (especially the editing style) based on technical inventions (AFAIK), has changed?!
So this is a niche topic, and I think you coulda/shoulda proactively check for YT collaborations/projects!? A YT content creator like 'NALF' (an American boy that is playing American Football in Germany and has created a documentary for his club "Raiding The Alps" ***) looks like a potential partner/apprentice to me :o) Interviewing him, reviewing & analyzing his documentary. Creating a YT mini tutorial for a mini-series about a game day?? I guess if American football is the topic, there are a bunch of people in the USofA who get interested in that too *bg* and there might be a few guys & girls out there who wanna end up on that list (sooner or later) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_documentary_filmmakers ?
Just my few thoughts. Hope that makes sense. Thx 4 listening and keep things going. Greetings from Germany :o)
