Your video has confirmed for me that I have been eating more correctly than I thought. In regard to choosing fruits and vegetables that are lower in potassium, I have made lists of the lower content items and make my choices from that list . I occasionally will have the higher items (avocados) as a treat. Thank you for your time and effort in making these videos. It is very much appreciated. God Bless
Thank you so much, Dr. Hashmi, for your videos. My Stage 1 kidney disease recently worsened to Stage 3, so I'm trying to learn more about how to manage it. Your videos are very helpful...especially with the shortage of kidney health providers in my area. I'm grateful to learn that it's advisable to have several servings of fruits and vegetables.
Thank you soooo much for your help…I am stage 4 diabetic, hypertensive, Crohn’s patient who suffered a small stroke 7 weeks ago…but have no kidney doc or dietitian yet…and am lost lost ! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I am so sorry to hear that. Start with the basics: focus on sleeping 7-9 hours, exercise daily (just move more), practice mindfulness, start with getting rid of red and processed meats, focus on adding more whole foods such fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, legumes to your diet. Everyday try to add one small thing and you will do wonders!
I like your lectures very much. You are an excellent speaker and have a most engaging way of breaking down difficult information. I am interested in how you talk about dialysis. People seem to think it's like plugging in a crockpot! Even some of the specialists seemed to minimize the impact dialysis has on a family's life. I helped my late husband with home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis before his death in 2011. That experience - but also watching his day-to-day struggles - made me somewhat of a kidney zealot. I am a family physician and have had plenty of opportunities to help my patients avoid CKD. Your plant-based recommendations seem very sound. Thank you. L.Gromko MD
Dr Hashmi, I've just watched your speech From two years ago, about a plant based diet, everybody should watch this , whether they have kidney disease Or not , it was absolutely amazing.
It would be helpful if you provide examples of fruits and vegetables with high protein quality. How do you define vegetables? For example, is corn a grain or a vegetable? Does it make any difference?
Wonderful message- eating fruits and vegetables not only save you from life threatening diseases but also give you healthier and longer life. Thank you for the highly useful info.
Thanks Doc. Your explaination is totally different from old school. I love fruit but people say not to eat fruit because of potassium. Please keep informing us to keep our kidney transplant healthy. 🙏
Thank you. You can and should eat fuit as long as we can keep your potassium level safe! A simple blood test is all you need. Even if potassium is high, you don't have to stop all fruits, just start with limiting high K foods first.
I have the most trouble working out a daily meal plan. Would you do a video on a workable meal plan? Thank you for all of the information you give us and the desire to eat a plant based diet.
Certainly. Where are you struggling with meal plans? I do meal prep on the weekend for the week. This makes it easy to make the right choice. On the weekends I aim for generally healthy foods but will splurge with my kids as well.
Thank you so much for what you are doing. I am seriously considering a plant based diet now. I have seen in the past that without meat, and mainly fruit and vegetables, I feel more energetic, healthier and lighter. Could you also discuss the effect of daily bread intake on kidneys? Here in South Africa, it is my people group's, (vulnerable group) staple food. Stay blessed.
My Dad passed away from heart failure 3 years after starting dialysis. He could have lived longer had he changed his eating habits. He kept saying you only live once. He didn’t do well with dialysis and said he was sorry he didn’t eat the right foods.
Have any studies been done on the use of MO’s ( mito organelles) cell regeneration, live stem cells, frozen stem cells, nano peptides, for the treatment of kidney disease? Western medicine needs more options than either dialysis or transplant.
My worry is that will consuming so much fruit alter your insulin levels because of the sugar(fructose)? Also, because carbohydrates turn in to sugar, will eating rye bread(low on potassium and phosphorus) be bad? Ive tried fasting and keto with stage 2-3 and it is difficult as it is a low sodium diet and you need that PLUS potassium. Ive been doing a plant base approach ever since I saw your videos. Especially with the young lady that is a kidney nutritionist. Lastly, my last question/concern is that I saw a 30 year experienced cardyologist talk about fasting, autophogy, and sugar being a cause of heart problems with a lot of his patients. And showed evidence based studies that saturated fats(omega 3) is good for the heart and do not cause heart problems related to death, but instead, the sugar and carbohydrates do. As it is also linked to alzeimers and dementia and so forth. So as you can see doc, ive been trying yo find a balance with all this. Can you please explain and/or let me know if you will do a video on this as I feel is such a huge topic.
Can you please discuss plant-based diet for ckd stage 4 patients with very high uric acid. I'm worried of eating beans, nuts, legumes because of my uric acid levels. Almost double the normal.
Why hiv affect kidneys in the majority of cases? I read an article from a homeopathic doctor who was kinda of explaining it but I couldn't understand much due to the terms he was using but at the end he suggest to make tests to check liver, kidneys and guts to find out previous illness that will affect the absorption of vitamins, minerals and proteins by our digestive system and make our inmune system weaker as also suggest fruit and vegetables (raw) diet to recover alive "enzymes" that our body needs, it was interesting to read about it but definitely there are so much information that we need to follow up to understand.

Hi. What should I do about my daughter who always tests positive for protein in her urine at her annual paediatrician appointment? She is 18 now but the protein in her urine has been present since she was in early elementary school. The paediatric kidney doctor just said we will have to “keep an eye on it”. Is it worrying or normal when kids have protein in their urine? Thank you. I just found your channel. So greatful for the information you present.

I drink pomegranate juice (pure) and eat a green banana every single day. Is this a problem? Am 62 years old. I thought was heart healthy. Love fruit and vegetables.
I know my body was telling me for quite a while to eat more vegetables and fruits before I found out about my kidney situation. I would feel nauseated some times while eating eggs and I found out recently that it was to do with phosphorus in eggs. I gave up coffee too and limiting chocolate. Going by what my body told me. I agree about the fruits and vegetables because it was the Daniel fast in the bible and the results showed compared with those who had meat.
Thank you Doctor for the information I have a 15 year old with CKD stage 4 my son was high in phosphorus potassium the doctor told me no fruits no vegetables nothing zero but I was like why is he still high in potassium and phosphorus if I don’t even buy bananas for me or my husband so my son doesn’t have the temptation and he still high so I started looking for information that if you eat fruits and vegetables it helps you and that’s what I did I started giving my son little small portions of fruits and vegetables drinking 3 to 4 water bottles a day and cut the sodas eating less red meats smaller portions and now everything is lower.
I am ckd stage 1 at 35yrs...with an inherited diabetes. My doctor said i am okay n have nothing to worry about but i want to do whatever i can to slow the progression cos i've had kidney pains since December 31st. I am going on a plant based diet from today. What else can i please do😭
Thank you Dr. Hashmi. Do you have anything on diabetes insipidus? Is this a precursor to kidney disease. Two of my family members has it and one got kidney problems and then diabetes.
So I love your vids and thankful I found them, when you say don't think about protein, should I just stick to 5 servings of fruit and veg a day and that's it? Or should I do the 5 servings of fruit and veg then also have some nuts and tofu to get the protein in? Also what are you thoughts on tofu vs whole cooked soybeans, and what forms of plant protein DO you recommend. Thank you.
Great question, what I meant by don't think about protein is that most people become obsessed over protein intake. This is not evidence based but based on lots of marketing around protein and meat and it goes back to WWII era. Think of the healthy plate model. Here is a link: healthy.kaiserpermanente.org/health-wellness/healtharticle.the-healthy-plate-method 25% of your plate should be protein 25% should be complex carbohydrates 50% should be nonstarchy vegetables. So many folks, like me, have multiple problems and it seems like what's good for one thing is not for the others etc. It gets quite confusing and hard to sort out, especially when some (if not most) of the meds you've been prescribed give you brain fog, plus things you're not supposed to eat! How can we possibly sort through this ton of conflicting information?
My spouse never had high blood pressure or diabetes, or kidney disease. He was admitted to the hospital because of aspiration pneumonia, about 5 months ago, and since then he is still in the hospital and being bombarded with Vancomycin(which destroys the kidneys), and other antibiotics. This week, as his kidneys started to fail, the hospital started dialyses on him, and he still is given Vancomycin, and other antibiotics. Isn’t that counterproductive?
Hi Richrico. First of all, I am so sorry for the very difficult time you are going through with your spouse. You are both in my prayers. The key to using vancomycin is to measure levels and adjust dosing. Here is a study that summarizes the findings. "Vancomycin used at currently recommended doses is minimally nephrotoxic when used in noncritically ill patients with less serious infections. In sicker patients with multiple risk factors for AKI, VANT occurs much more commonly, but it remains uncertain to what degree vancomycin is directly responsible. In our opinion, it is safe to initiate therapy with vancomycin in critically ill patients with multiple risk factors for AKI, pending culture results with use of TDM and antibiotic stewardship (Table 5). Trough levels should be obtained within 48-72 h, by which time initial culture results should be available. Decisions regarding continuation of vancomycin therapy can be individualized, based on culture result, MIC (if staphylococci are isolated), AKI risk, and side‐effect profile of alternative agents. Loading doses are safe." Filippone et al. Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2017 Sep; 102(3): 459-469. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5579760/
The egg consumption would fall under total daily protein requirements, which are 0.6-0.8pm/kg/day. In general, favoring more plant based proteins is always preferred
Dr Hashmi...,. Please explain your egg answer in layman terms. I consume 3-4 eggs per day. 1 egg has approximately 6 grams of protein. How does 24 grams of egg protein equivalate to your daily formula? Thank you.
I hoped you were going to look into potassium further. as you said you would. I am very concerned as I have stage 3b CKD. I have switched to a pescatairian diet and eat a couple of fruits a day. Am I on the rite track? Thank you for your talk, very enlightening.
Greetings Dr. I have. Aloved one who is in stage 5 kidney failure and he has been restricted on his fruits and veggies intake, and many types he has been informed he simply cannot eat to prevent high levels of potassium, phosphorous and fiber. I'm trying to talk to him about the importance of a plant based diet and his ability to reverse his disease, but it's difficult when he has been told he cannot consume his favorite things like onions and tomatoes, just to name a few. His Physicians and dietician are of no help. Any advice you can give? Thank you so much for your videos. I found yor channel today and have subscribed.
Its important to track your potassium closely. Add one item slowly and follow the blood work. Sometimes people have to remove some things from their diet so they can add others. It's a journey, and it can be slow, but it's worth figuring out.
You mention fruits and vegetables in one breath, but are they equally healthy? I get so confused, for a lot of doctors recommend to eat less fruit. Because of the content of fructose. And its effect on insulin.
What about a person that has no large intestine. Only a small portion of the small intestine that has been resection. (J Pouch surgery). Can't eat the plant based foods nor red meat. Got ckd due to severe dehydration due to diarrhea.
Good videos of yours Doctor .Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and mostly water. Could it be possible that we are not getting enough water for our organs (like the kidney) to function properly? of course, the other components are important but would water intake be a significant one factor?. On another side, I have seen several channels by 'doctors' recommending people not to eat fruits because of the sugar content yet there is a wide variety of fruit species and types to choose from according to our caloric needs. subscribed!
We fear to eat plenty of vegetables bec of fertilizers that are used to grow them,. Does the fertilizers that are used to grow them have any effect in our bodies and how serious?
What about fructose in fruit… l love fruit but lately some doctors started to tell us to give fruit the boot to save the liver from becoming fatty and diseased .
Thank you, Dr! I have been trying to nudge my mom, who has CKD towards plant based. Unfortunately, she just started chemo and can not keep down much of anything. Her doctors recommended Ensure, so we were looking for a healthier option. Any recommendation for the least detrimental, commercially available meal replacement shake?
This is a tough one. When my mother had colon cancer, we made our own smoothies with kale, plant-based protein powder, berries, flaxseed mixed with unsweetened soymilk. There is a plant-based ensure drink now as well.
Have you heard of Dr. Walter Kempner? In the 1950's he put his kidney patients (and hypertension and obese patients) on the rice diet consisting of white rice, fruit, fruit juice and table sugar if his kidney patients were losing weight too quickly. He did give them a vitamin pill daily. He had amazing results. What are your thoughts on this protocol? Thank you!
I am confused about the proportions. For example, 1 serving of vegetables is 1/2 cup ? Whole fruit, 1 each: apple, pear, grapes I ask this because I am on blood thinner (Warfarin) and am not suppose to have Vitamin K. So how do I handle that issue?
What do you eat during the day. I noted your comment about wheat and I am on the wheat belly diet. so if I cut out meat and cheese what am I going to eat? I love fruit and veg and eat lots but I must admit without grains, etc eating is not much fun.
I have a acute kidney injury my creatinine is at 43 to 52 range on tests I'm on dyalsis is there a good method to lower my numbers was told I need to be around the 1 to 2 range to get off dyalsis and I'm a type 1 diabetic kidney damage is not diabetic related any help would be great on advice
Hi I was just told my kidneys is letting protein out when urinate so is this the diet to follow my doctor told me to watch your video on millet which I haven’t seen yet so any advice would be appreciated
Please help me on how to manage the daily caloric deficit I’m experiencing after my limits for potassium and protein have been reached…or perhaps how to better plan my diet so as not to incur a deficit in the first place? Since starting on a strict plant-based diet, I’ve steadily lost weight because my daily deficit is 300-400. I exercise vigorously 30-35 minutes every day, but no doubt my weight loss is causing loss of muscle and lean tissue that as a 76 year old I cannot afford to lose. I know that adding sugars and fats to take in those missing calories isn’t a good idea either. So I’m real,y stumped. Thank you kindly! I
Add complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, beans, lentils, quinoa, oatmeal. Just keep an eye on potassium. You don' t have to be 100% on anything. Start slowly and work your way up. Don't add unhealthy foods.
Most of our ancestors were both hunters and gatherers because fruits and vegetables do not grow all year round, so we do need a balance of both meat and vegetables to stay healthyy.
I would like some information on autoimmune disorders and foods that could help/harm it Also, a video of what you’re eating would be cool too -- seeing is believing 😎😎
You read my mind, that is the next study I am reviewing. Its looking at Vit D and Omega 3 supplementation in lowering autoimmune disorder risk. And yes, I gotta do one for eating :)
@@SELFPrinciple Is there a certain type of vit d? How much? What kind of omega 3? Now they have fish based and vegetable based omega 3's? How much omega 3 dose?
There are lots of benefits of nuts. Just keep an eye out on potassium. Lifting weights will burn calories (protein/fat/carbs). It will also help muscles to absorb more protein and get stronger
@@SELFPrinciple Indeed Dr HASHMI , as you know , even if fruits are high in fructose we should not forget that they are also rich in enzymes . Cooked vegetables no longer contain enzymes, crucial nutrients for health. Enzymes are destroyed by heat.
Doctor please please I want my kidneys to be cured , please remove a cure for kidney, please tell me what to eat , please can you connect on what's up with me and tell me which fruits and vegetables to eat and how much to eat
Btw I have not kidney disease and I wish not to have it. I do have intolerance to gluten that took me 2 years to find out and made me lose 16 pounds in those 2 years because of diarrhea but I am in control now yet I do not think I would get my weight back I am on a healthy diet. I do have a small garden/orchard where I do grow part of my fruits and veggies (organic) and I do 4 hr gardening in my (very) steep garden/orchard every day...non smoking and non drinking.
I recently had a test third time in one year, where they send iodine through a IV, before they start they sent potassium through IV, I had an infiltration and they had to stop the procedure I landed in bed 2 days with the room spinning around. What effects will the iodine and the potassium have on my kidney as they want me to undergo another test thank you
Looks like you are getting iodinated contrast to get better imaging. Sometimes we need to use it so we can clearly see structures or during certain procedures.
My range of veggies is limited to those with low oxalates. I can slip in some with medium levels of oxalates. Also, I take K+Citrate x 4 per day. Is that too much? When I get my labs what is a safe level of k+?
Thanks for watching! What did you think of this study on fruits and vegetables in dialysis patients?

Loading doses are safe."

Thank you Dear Dr. My question is that how much consumption of eggs for a stage 3 three kidney problem is okay? Currently I eat one egg per day.
Thank you.
Very good info.
What is the effect of coffee on blood pressure?
I hoped you were going to look into potassium further. as you said you would. I am very concerned as I have stage 3b CKD. I have switched to a pescatairian diet and eat a couple of fruits a day. Am I on the rite track?
Thank you for your talk, very enlightening.
I really interested in this I need labs what to watch I do have cysts on my kidneys my pcp states I’m in early stage thxs
Thank you Doctor
Thanks for the info doc.
I would like to know about hemochromotosis. It seems there is nothing to be done about it but blood letting. Is there any thing else? Thank you
Greetings Dr.
And its effect on insulin.
can you provide a list of fruits and vegetables you are talking about?
Just get the fruits and vegetables you like and do research!!
Eating 1 kiwi/day
On plant based now since jan 2022
What about a person that has no large intestine. Only a small portion of the small intestine that has been resection. (J Pouch surgery). Can't eat the plant based foods nor red meat. Got ckd due to severe dehydration due to diarrhea.
Ask your Dr if he thinks you could use veggie powders.
Good videos of yours Doctor
.Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and mostly water. Could it be possible that we are not getting enough water for our organs (like the kidney) to function properly? of course, the other components are important but would water intake be a significant one factor?.
On another side, I have seen several channels by 'doctors' recommending people not to eat fruits because of the sugar content yet there is a wide variety of fruit species and types to choose from according to our caloric needs.
subscribed!
Berries do best to reduce sugar from fruits for me.
Thank you !
Could you please send link of study you talked about?
My dad has kidney failure he is at 24% his age is 84 and i would like to know if is to late to start him on this diet.
@@SELFPrinciple Have a recipe?
Have you heard of Dr. Walter Kempner? In the 1950's he put his kidney patients (and hypertension and obese patients) on the rice diet consisting of white rice, fruit, fruit juice and table sugar if his kidney patients were losing weight too quickly. He did give them a vitamin pill daily. He had amazing results. What are your thoughts on this protocol? Thank you!
Rice diet is a winner 🏆. I did it for my grandma !!
That is wonderful. If you would like I would like to know some of the details of your grandma's success. So glad for the both of you!
I am confused about the proportions. For example, 1 serving of vegetables is 1/2 cup ?
Whole fruit, 1 each: apple, pear, grapes
I ask this because I am on blood thinner (Warfarin) and am not suppose to have Vitamin K. So how do I handle that issue?
What do you eat during the day. I noted your comment about wheat and I am on the wheat belly diet. so if I cut out meat and cheese what am I going to eat? I love fruit and veg and eat lots but I must admit without grains, etc eating is not much fun.
Great video. 👍
Thanks so much!
I a so sorry you are going through this. If you have an injury, the kidney can repair but if there is scarring then that is not reversible.
great info keep up the good work
I’ve been taking Maca root…..it seems very beneficial to well being and more.
Is this okay with ckd
It’s a great question. Unfortunately I don’t see much on maca pharmacokinetics so don’t know if dose adjustment is needed in renal conditions
Hi I was just told my kidneys is letting protein out when urinate so is this the diet to follow my doctor told me to watch your video on millet which I haven’t seen yet so any advice would be appreciated
Dr Hashimi, how much is a serving?
@@SELFPrinciple Thank you very much, Doctor.
Thank you
You are very welcome
Dr. Please when making videos like these remember there may be people with say fatty liver? What fruits and vegetables or grains will be useful?
Very useful
Most of our ancestors were both hunters and gatherers because fruits and vegetables do not grow all year round, so we do need a balance of both meat and vegetables to stay healthyy.
Wonderful
I would like some information on autoimmune disorders and foods that could help/harm it
Also, a video of what you’re eating would be cool too -- seeing is believing 😎😎
You read my mind, that is the next study I am reviewing. Its looking at Vit D and Omega 3 supplementation in lowering autoimmune disorder risk. And yes, I gotta do one for eating :)
@@SELFPrinciple yayyy
I’m excited and looking forward to seeing it 😎
@@SELFPrinciple Is there a certain type of vit d? How much? What kind of omega 3? Now they have fish based and vegetable based omega 3's? How much omega 3 dose?
What do kidney disease do to one's skin?
The problem with a lot of people is the costs of buying the proper foods…..especially with Biden increases in everything.
What do you think about 40day fasting. Will that help
Your kidney repair?
Doctor, nuts have high protein are the any good ? Can lifting weights burn protein that's already in the body ?
There are lots of benefits of nuts. Just keep an eye out on potassium. Lifting weights will burn calories (protein/fat/carbs). It will also help muscles to absorb more protein and get stronger
Dr Hashmi: I was told to prioritize vegetables and go low on fruit, mostly because of the fructose. do you agree with that?
I would love to see the studies on this. I don't agree with that.
@@SELFPrinciple Indeed Dr HASHMI , as you know , even if fruits are high in fructose we should not forget that they are also rich in enzymes . Cooked vegetables no longer contain enzymes, crucial nutrients for health. Enzymes are destroyed by heat.
378 protein ratio creatinine pls comment thx
Please what are some examples of fruits and vegetables you recommend?
they're all good.
Can a patient on dialysis come off dialysis safely with plant based diet?
Is there anyways i can get off from dialysis?
What I'm talking about is chemical fertilizers.
My range of veggies is limited to those with low oxalates. I can slip in some with medium levels of oxalates. Also, I take K+Citrate x 4 per day. Is that too much? When I get my labs what is a safe level of k+?
