Because there's so many different ways of closing a pool, sometimes antifreeze isn't needed. For us, we close an aboveground pool around 3 different ways. Most times it will be just like in this video. Watch a few videos on how to close an aboveground pool and you'll find out the best way to close it for your situation.
I need to close my pool but could not get anyone to come . They are so busy and did not take any more client so I want to close my own . But I do not know what to put in the water before I close it . My pool has about 12,000 gallons of water . Please advice what should I put in the water and how to balance the water ? I am kind new to all these and did not understand what and how to balance the water . Also thank you so much for this video , it is very helpful . Please give more tips and advise . Thanks
Well. First. Don't get too stressed over everything online or UA-cam. There's so much stuff out there and you can get overwhelmed. DONT. Its way easier than you think. For closing, just pour 10L of Liquid chlorine in the pool. Figure out the balancing and other stuff over the winter. Don't worry too much right now.
We live in SE Texas near Houston Needing to close our pool...we do not have harsh winters here...could be a rainy season maybe not...wondering how we keep the top of the pool cover tight so rain does not collapse the cover into the pool...is this a dumb question lol?
Great question. Could hook up a sump pump with a float on it. If you have steps, just put it on the step and run a hose out under the cover to where you want it to drain .
Are you not supposed to lower water in the pool? We are wanting to close our own pool as its 400.00 every year to pay a company to do it and that's ridiculous. They always lower the water in pool when closing so just wondering. Also what chemicals besides antifreeze do we need to close it? Thanks
There are different ways to close an AG Pool and it depends on where you live (Canada) and your plumbing. In the video, the return has a ball valve shut off right behind it. The best set up for an above ground pool is in this video. BUT. What is not shown in this video is, the winter cover should have several weights with a bungee thru the eyelets instead of the cable. That way the cover can move more freely with the snow load. The cable on these covers can pull the top rails in, causing the bottom to kick out.
As for the chemicals. Just balance your water days before and up the sanitation level and you should be fine. No need to waste money on "closing kits" The trick is to open and close your pool when its cold out. May for opening and September or October for closing (also in Canada)
Also with the cables.. We had someone close for us several years ago.. the cable broke and punctured the side of our pool all the way through the liner cause a leak. Make sure to check that the cable you use is good and not worn out. I have a question about fixing holes.. I have found 2. One as described above and the other is on the structure only. What is the best fix for this?
On an above ground pool there's no need to lower the water level. You really only need to do that for inground pools where the lines and plumbing need to be blown out and winterized. Keeping a normal water level in your pool when closing is better for your liner as it reduces the chance of it drying out, and it's better for your pool wall too. You just need to make sure that your discharge is plugged and your intake is covered.
The reason I lower the water from any AG pool and let the water drain from there is, the skimmer can and does have too much weight when its full of water and can push down damaging the wall or breaking the skimmer. There is a part that when building the AG pool, the builder should put on the skimmer to help take away some on the pressure pushing straight down.
If you have any questions about your pool, please comment below.
You don't have to use antifreeze for the pool itself because of freezing in the winter?

As the saying goes . . . Not all superheroes wear capes!!
thank you very much for posting this!!
lol. Love it............... I think. lol
Thanks for this excellent video. It is perfect for me since I've got the same filter/pump!
I live in the Pacific northwest where it rains all winter. By November I will need to drain the pool or it will over flow. Any recommendations?
On draining it ? Would use a sump pump with the ball on it. Just like the sump pump for a house. Gets up to a certain level and then kicks in.

Do you think an inflatable in the middle of the pool under the cover is necessary? Ive seen so many people do it.
I've tried it and it doesn't work that well to justify the cost of buying it.
What kind anti freeze?
Plumbing antifreeze

Why don't you have to worry about dropping the water level below the return? Won't it hurt the pool when it freezes?
Close the pool like in the video and follow every instruction and you will not have an issue.
