The AE86 wasn't turbocharged/supercharged and that now has legendary status.
Exacly. People forgot what balance is. Nowadays everybody expects big amount of power but 200HP is enough to have fun, you can drift it, you can slide it, it does 7s 0-60. What more do you need?
They want lazy power, a soft ride, FWD/AWD, numb steering, and automatics it seems :/
At that point it stops being a sports car tbh. Look at the Audi TT for example, it looks like a sports car but it isn't one. It's an A3 with less space.
You've said it all mate. I agree 100%
For those who watched Initial D, you can understand the philosophy of the car. The AE86 in that series was famous for being driven to it's absolute limit which is the ethos of this car too. Additionally, the simple layout keeps it light and balanced which is far more engaging than a 2-tonne barge with a million horsepower that any one with a lead foot can drive fast.
It was a different time. In 1984 it was quite quick, and hardly any cars had turbos.
Proud owner since 2013.
Had many people say to me "why buy that when x car has more power".... that has got to be the least relevant argument imaginable. Especially when the "x car" is usually some kind of hatchback which, let's be honest' was designed to be a compromise between practicality and comfort.
Some people just want big numbers, I just want to drive - now leave me in peace.
Eight-Six driver here, and I 100% agree with you!
Channy132 Another GTS86 driver here. Agreed. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
I've only had a brief spin in one but if you don't find enjoyment in this car, you don't understand driving. May as well be on a rollercoaster.
I just ordered one ... instead of Audi A5 or Ford Mustang! Love this little car and having a ride 👍🙂
+1,000,000. only had mine since November 2018 (an MY14) and I effing love everything about this car. a joy to drive and own, puts a smile on my face just looking at it sitting in the garage. just a fantastically balanced gem of a car that anyone can enjoy.
Most of the people calling this car slow can’t even handle more power in a rwd car. They’d kill themselves in z06 or GT350 or even a regular mustang GT. Get a grip on reality and stop complaining. Enjoy life.
I have wanted a GT86 since it came out in 2012 and drove a lot of them. I now own a 2018 GT86 Pro and love it. It’s just such a well balanced car and clearly developed by people who know that you don’t need a mountain of power to enjoy a car.
A lot of people complain about the torque dip, but I find it is a great pocket to sit in when driving around town.
They built the relatively modestly powered, modestly tyred, engaging drivers car that all the enthusiasts said they wanted, and nobody bought it because it was modestly powered and didn't have all weather AWD traction and a German badge. And we wonder why the manufacturers spit out generic boxes with fat tyres on vanity wheels, clad in soft touch plastics with a boatload of power.
We are in a time where so many ppl judge a car by the stat sheet. Its so easy to be obsessed with it because of how much media/bloggers go on about it. GT 86 vs X in a drag etc... who drags a GT86. Its a riot of a fun car to put into corners, if u think it doesn't have enough power then the roads you are driving on are too straight.
What people forgot about the GT86.
They made that car with the spirit of legendery AE86 that i own.
the spirit is its dynamic , its balance but also its base is tunable for track, drift, rally or whatever you plan on doing.
The AE86 is great for that.
A stock Ae86 is a slow car but with few bits: camshaft, adjustable pulleys etc, for instance, my car with 150 hp surprised a lot of people on tracks with so much fun you can not imagine. i am faster than some more powerful cars arround the track even though they passed me on the straight. it is very enjoyable!
The GT86 is the same. First with tyres you can gain 2s.
Remember the car has PRIUS' tyres.
can you imagine a megane RS, or a focus RS with prius' tyres. it will be a desaster.
It is a rewarded car! to go fast you need to pilot the car. It is easy to go fast with a front wheel drive or AWD but with RWD you need to have SKILLS!
Also, It is a base to tune either for speed, drift or drag or whatever
I agree that it is pricey but like the AE86, it is not going to be a good one in terms of sales volume but later like the AE86. it will be the car that people will want because it will be rare and the only one of this kind to be LIGHT rwd car with a great chassis as standart.
the car gas so much potential!
it is not fast stock but it could be very fast with some racing tuning. they are plenty of options.
There are many videos on youtube on tuning guide and exemples of highly tuned GT86.
I will get one for sure when i don't know.
Dia S Completely agree mate (from another AE86 owner)
ae86 owners understand the spirit and the potential of the car.
You get some tad bit wider wheels on that car and it grips so much more. I love the gt86. The way it looks. The way it drives
Everyone who says this car is slow is simply not intelligent enough to take a turn, 86/brz is faster on a nurburgring than for example
- Chevrolet Camaro SS (2010)
- Nissan skyline gtr r32
- Bmw m3 e46
- Lotus exige s
- Jaguar XKR (2006)
- Lancer evo VII
- Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV
- Honda Nsx (old)
I thought these car are considered "fast"
I believe that gt86/brz laptime was for a 19.1km "bridge to gantry" lap and not the official 20.6km laps that those other cars completed. The gt86/brz is a great car but there is simply no way it could out perform the E46 M3 or evo 7 on the track.
I've driven both brz and e46 m3, and its no way the brz is faster at the ring. Yes the brz is fun to drive, but it lacks 40hp. And pricewice, a brz and e46 m3 costs the same. So why but upgrades for 10k to the brz, when the e46 has it all?
I would love a brz one day, absolutely one of the last analog cars, but it need 40 more hp. And that costs 5k to do :(
@@knutendreringhagen289 every e46 m3 I’ve test drove had problems pop up that owner was hiding. Every gt86 I’ve driven was constant smiles and no mechanical problems. Can even find them already supercharged these days. M3 feel more serious. Frs is playful fun.
lotus exige s definitely quicker on track i must say bcos i own both. 86/BRZ is more fun on small track or a gymkhana
Best 86 review ever
The Fast & Furious generation don't understand this car
Sad for them
Thanks Subaru and Toyota for build this gem
Well outside Japan anyway, the Japanese get it. Keiichi Tsuchiya drives one and if it’s good enough for him….
Slow, fairly but it means you can drive it fairly hard without going at ludicrous speeds.
Expensive, yep and the quality looks suspect but I'm glad to see they have got rid of some of those 86 boxer labels and made this version a bit cleaner looking. The last one looks like it has loads of tat stuck to it, especially the rear wing.
I really fancy one so please don't buy it with the red interior bits so I can buy one when it's half price.
just remember what ryosuke and bunta said i bought this car this year and its so exciting
I agree, throughly enjoyed mine. It’s not the fastest or the most powerful, but that’s just not the point. It’s the suspension, chassis and the light weight that makes this car so much fun on a road with lots of curves.
Anyone else get Alan Partridge vibes from the commentary? Great review though!
Daily driving weaving city traffic the torque dip is a fucking pain in the arse but in any other application, it's fine. I love mine & want to keep it forever. I have a feeling these are gunna be the last of the 'analogue feeling' affordable rear drive platforms (outside of MX5) so I intend on keeping mine.
Loved this! Love the GT86 even more
Brilliant video. That's what it's all about.
Best people's SPORTs CAR !
One of the best looking cars on the road, best looking you can get for the money in my opinion. But I'm all about speed, so not for me
But I can see the appeal
Thank you for saying "not for me but I can see the appeal" instead of "i don't like it so it's shit". Too many people call cars shit just because it's not what they personally like.
Great Video.
It is fun but it needs more power, bigger, wider wheels. Ive got bigger, wider wheels and 2019, a trip to fensport is needed. Then the car is somewhat complete and will be more fun. The stock 86 is a great base to start modding 👍
Exactly! It's a nice basic canvas to mod to your hearts content! Or enjoy it for this simplistic, balanced layout
For me, the exterior is nic, the power is ok but for the interior, too simple. Should be more stylish. E.g, add an armrest to hide the cup holder and make it look nice.
How does it compare to an MX5 RF?
I really enjoy my girly car / fat miata or whatever the haters say about it.
I doubt that Toyota will increase the power of the GT86. They won't want a sporting model in their lineup that competes with the Supra for a far lower price.
the power isnt the problem it is the price. otherwise great car. 3 grand less and it would make super sense
There were smoking deals on new Scion FR-S models last summer.
suzuka1307r How is the price the problem? It's like a poor mans Cayman with 100hp/130tq missing for half price. You can't look at Mustang to judge value
Here here!
Still don't get why we got an automatic in our test car... manual seems so much nicer.
It looks so much better without the spoiler, but that front end is just horrific. If only you could get the previous front, without the wing.
It was possible, that's exactly what I got... so if you're looking to buy used, keep an eye out.
I think the new front end looks great, it's really unique and one day we will look back on it in the future and say wow look at the 86
Wouldn't drive anything else...
But can you actully use the rear seats or are they just there for the Ads?
Disagree. I've had four adults in the car (me included). Getting in and out is a pain, but once they're in it's ok. Not going to work for long journeys, but for your standard trip to the restaurant it works fine.
I disagree again Francisco, I'm only 5'9 and fairly slim only once had a passenger about the same size as me sat behind for a 2 minute car journey but I had to move the seat very close to the wheel and was a struggle to use the pedals properly. I wouldn't have anyone sat behind me again unless it was the last option or an emergency, I think you should be sat appropriately while driving. I have had someone in the back behind the passenger a few times but the person sat in the front passenger seat is squashed up against the dash and the person in the back has to lock their feet under the seat because there is zero room for them. basically you can fit 3 people in safely but uncomfortably. effectively its a 2 seater.
@@mrjoel6 I agree that you can fit 3 people. Behind me it's not possible to fit someone since I can't use the pedals properly. But in the rear seat behind the passenger I've fit some friends that are really tall, so it works
@@Chair991 only took 2 years for someone to agree! Haha I still have my 86 by the way and still don't have people behind me, just dangerous.
@@mrjoel6 yup that was somewhat my experience too.
Under seat should be trimmed by maybe 1.5 inches too more scrotum for feet.
£26k? Jesus.
Its a great car, but it does need more power, HKS supercharger is the road i am going down this week.
These things depreciate like crazy. Buy a used one for 16k usd.
arion45 depends on where you live, can't find one for less than 22K here

Just wait 15 years and you will see
everything they changed on the exterior made it worse and more ugly.
I have to agree. The old design was much better and simpler. The new front end is hideous. If I am buying one, I'm going for the BRZ, for sure. It's definitely more suave looking.
Blake Swan I have to disagree in my opinion it looks more premium now.
Your commentary is redundant. I love the 86 though.
Lol. 30k? Buy a used 2012-2016 FRS and buy a front end from Toyota for $400 and a 350 professional paintjob. You got yourself @ 2017 Toyota 86. Just saved you guys couple of thousand dollars.
p0613v There are many more changes.
You didn't even watch this video. He mentions about the additional spot welds on the suspension joints for more torsional rigidity. Bet you don't even know how important that is for sportscars
Suitedt to those who intend to do an engine swap.Same recipe as the RX8 back in the days
If you think this car needs more power, then you don't know how to use the power it does have.
I’ve always said to people who claim this car needs more power, “There’s a difference between wanting more power and needing more power”
I've owned my 86 over a year now.
It is fantastic.
I love my 2017Toyota GT86 oceanic blue, its fun to drive and very friendly environment.......lots of good attention even on the road driving.
The only big numbers I want is in my bank account, other than that, I just need 86
That censor 10:55 though!
I bloody love this video, exactly how I feel in my '86.
Looks like fun
Do UK cars get the new shorter gearing like the non-eu cars get for 2017? I know the engine is the old one but nobody seems to mention the gearing...
Hi ,I'm thinking about getting an older Porsche Cayman 2.7 manual or a newer GT86 as an every day driver which one would you recommend?
