Great video! I think people are very quick to say that dowels are awful, but there are cases where they can still be utilised to the bird's advantage! Of course we always want a huge variety of textures and thicknesses of perches, but having one dowel in the mix is not going to make your birds feet fall off 😅
Having a variety of perch types is importantAll my parrots have the appropriate diameters of dowels based on their size. I wrap them with that wrap. I removed the vet wrap when it starts wearing out and re-wrap again. My birds sleep on platforms higher up in their cage. so their feet aren’t always on a or a perch. They also have a U-shaped perch made of sand that they like to hang out on.
Oh I didn’t know that thank you for telling me I like this video actually and I just wait I love your videos keep making a budgie content and I really want to see a video where you introduce your budgies Simon new watcher and I really want to meet your buddies and see some clothes and see what they really look like and get their personalities personalities think I said that the robot okay I love your beds
Finally someone who agrees dowels aren't all bad. So many people think dowels cause bumblefoot but actually it's a complete myth. Bumblefoot is caused by a bacterial infection that makes its way into the foot from an injury such as a scratch from the claws or rough surfaces that are often unsanitized. Your birds can catch bumblefoot even if you have all natural perches, it's all to do with hygiene and cleanliness of said cage. Dowels mixed with natural perches ect are absolutely fine and are no risk to your bird just remember to clean your perches and cage regularly that's what you need to do to prevent any infection from happening
Yeah I think a lot of people just learned the word bumblefoot and ran with it. Really it’s that putting pressure on the same part of the foot all the time for long periods of time causes the foot pain and rubbing which can open sores and, infection or not, is painful. If someone has all natural perches but they’re arranged poorly and the bird is always sitting on the same part of the perch in the same way, it’s the same problem.
Ah haha great question! It’s actually cage cover meant for a macaw cage 😅 it’s the only cover that’s large enough to go over this double wide cage that I’ve found. It was kinda expensive so if you have a room where you can control the light well after dark then it’s not mandatory to cover them. It’s all about achieving good light control and schedule. In my old apartment they had another separate room with a door so I could control the light really well without covers but here I often work in this space after dark since it’s my office so now I need the cover. Happy to answer any other questions!
hi! Thank you so much! These are the 24" hookbill lights by M&M cage company. They are non-UV, flicker free, high CRI, LEDs made specifically for lighting cages. I'll put the link below. These aren't going to support vitamin D synthesis. They're meant as the base lighting for the area and I set them on a timer which you can get on their website. If you do want a timer that dims slowly, get the one on their website because the LEDs are special so a normal dimmer would likely make them flicker rather than slowly dim. The owner Mark is great. highly recommend as the base lighting for budgie cages. www.breedingcage.com/collections/pet-lights-with-chewguard
@@TheBudgieAcademy Going to check them out now! I’ve been having trouble finding good cage lighting with decent reviews and I remembered your set-up had great lighting. I really appreciate the prompt and in-depth reply. Thank you!

You can use a knife to add grooves and texture then smooth it out with sand paper

Can you make a video about budgie diet basics? I don't think there's too many good ones on youtube haha
Are you a vet Dr...thank you for that advice.
So many great tips! Thank you! I’ve been meaning to ask what you use to cover the back side of their cages? The black fabric? Thank you!
