Alzheimer's Disease | EXERCISES for DEMENTIA | Recreation Therapy

  • This workout is created specifically for people in moderate to advanced stages of dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease and any other type of dementia. I work as a Recreation Therapist with patients with dementia and have learned how to cater my class to best suit those with later stages of dementia. The moves are not complicated so they are easier to understand. I count since I find patients will often count with me and it is something they can still do. If your loved one can't lift their arms all the way due to shoulder injuries or loss of mobility, just encourage them to lift as far as it is comfortable. I purposely didn't talk too much in the video since it is easy to overwhelm a person with dementia. Although I can't use popular music from the 50's & 60's due to copyright laws, I tried to find music that would still be appropriate yet not overwhelming. I hope this video will help to get your loved one moving. Wishing you and your loved one all the best as you spend time exercising together.

      The participation will be dependent on the level of dementia. People with early to moderate levels of dementia can follow along, but if someone has advanced dementia, they are no longer able to understand what to do. I work with people with all levels of dementia and most of the people with advanced dementia benefit more from a balloon toss activity (tap a balloon back and forth). Some people love it and get exercise with the activity and other people in advanced stages are no longer able to do that activity either. It’s trial and error to find what works best for each person.

      Most of my gentle seated workouts would be appropriate for people with dementia as well. If you look at my playlists, you'll find more workouts there. Although, repetition for someone with dementia works well so she may do best doing this one over and over. Just a thought.

    Thank you for doing this for dementia patients. My mom was able to follow along very well.
    Could you do a walking one also? She was having a hard time following along even with your simple one.
    The other suggestion I have is calling the video something else instead of using the word dementia. My mom read it out loud. I mean she knows she has dementia(although she may forget sometimes) but she was watching as I chose it. Maybe call it “super simple” or something like that

    • @ImprovedHealth
      @ImprovedHealth  3 роки тому

      Hi, I would be more than happy to create a simple to follow walking program for your mom and others with dementia. I understand what you're saying about having the word 'dementia' in the title and having the person with dementia seeing it. I struggled with what to name the videos for exactly that reason. At the same time, I want families to be able to find the videos designed specifically for their loved ones with dementia. I am afraid if I don't have dementia in the title, the person will never find the video on UA-cam. 'Super simple' sounds like a great suggestion. I will continue to give this more thought. Thank you so much for your feedback, I truly appreciate it.

      Awesome. I'm so glad to read that. I hope she'll be up for it. If she doesn't follow along, you can try again another day. I find some days my participants are up for it and other days they just can't cognitively follow along...every day is different in the mind of someone with dementia.

      @@ImprovedHealth Thanks - you're right that she balks at doing it, but thus far has done it twice. Second time was just this morning, and she appears to be more alert than yesterday. She can't move her limbs as fast or as high as you do, but said she felt her heart pumping (which is nice to hear). I'll try to help her continue.

    • @ImprovedHealth

      Hi! I'll have to look into it. The problem is that I work full-time in my day job, and then create 2 videos a week for my channels, plus I have a family at home. I only have so much time that I have to dedicate to my channel so writing out the subtitles for each video adds a lot more work. But, I will look into how much time it would take. I definitely want to be inclusive and I think a lot of other seniors would appreciate the subtitles as well. I'll see if it might be possible.

    This is great, now if you can tell me how to get my husband with dementia to do these with me, I'll be grateful, because right now I don't know how and he resists. Please advise.

    • @ImprovedHealth
      @ImprovedHealth  Рік тому

      Hi! I work with people with various levels of dementia. I find most people with early to moderate stages can follow along fairly easily but once it gets to advanced dementia, it becomes more challenging. It's not necessarily that the person doesn't want to, it's more that the person can't due to their brain being unable to tell their body what to do. I don't know what stage your husband is in, but you could put on his favourite music, mute me, and then sit between the TV and your husband and do the movements and gently encourage him to join you. He might not at first, but might start after a few minutes when he sees what you are doing. As a Recreation Therapist, part of the assessment process is to determine what the person CAN do. If they can't follow along in a group class, I'll try 1:1. If they still can't follow along, I try other physical activities. Another great simple physical activity is balloon toss. It sounds childish but it's a great activity because it gets the whole upper body moving. I start by tapping it straight to the person and then I gradually tap the balloon a little to the left or right so they have to reach a little bit more. I only do this activity when the person is seated (standing and tapping the balloon can easily lead to a fall due to medications and lack of balance and awareness with dementia). Using a ball doesn't work as well since I find it often scares people. A beach ball also works but I find balloons work the best since they fall slowly. It can often be difficult to find exercises to keep people with later stages of dementia moving but I hope those tips help.

      I created this one as a gentle workout for people with dementia, but most of my gentle seated workouts are suitable. In terms of slowing the progression of dementia, all exercise helps. Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent dementia as well.
