    What I appreciate about this setup is that no material is wasted. Other assemblies made with solid wood require turning to the final shape, losing a lot of wood.
    And the final effect is fantastic.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому +1

      Thank you very much Marcelo. For sure it does save wood. But buying the wood this way cost much more than a chunk of wood from a tree.
      And very little of that gets wasted as we use it around the garden and some of the shavings can be used for smoking food.
      Other wise those pieces get turned into firewood.
      Thanks for watching,

    Papa,
    “…illusions are cool.” That isn’t the half of it! After you finished the glue-up, every time you moved the work, I waited for it to turn and settle on one corner 🧐. I KNOW it’s a flat piece, but so well done that I was continually seeing the 3D illusion only! Nicely done 😎.
    Keep the aspidistra flying!

    For those who can use it, a FREE WARE cad program can make the design phase a whole lot easier, or pay the big bucks, your choice.
    What always gets me is the actual illusion caused by the different shades of wood and their alignment.
    Your skill is always apparent, and your knowledge of these processes shows every time. Yes, you were a pattern maker, and that helps, but this is art not mechanics, even if some mechanical things are involved. Great video. '-)

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Robert. Yes there are a number of free CAD programs and some are very good. There is one called DesignSpark that is very powerful. The program I bought has built in CAM which I use for CNC work. It also as a decent ART program where I can do engravings. Not a big bucks program but it works.
      Yes the shades of wood and how they are stacked up is what makes this work.

    Thanks Gary, I love your enthusiasm and the patient, detailed way you explain things. My eyes were convinced you were picking up 3D pieces - uncanny! You always inspire me to want to rush out to the workshop and have a go at what you have demonstrated, but as it has just passed Midnight here in Nottingham UK, I had better wait until morning. Actually, realistically, I had better wait until I have practiced how to cut the pieces accurately!! I am building up a long 'to do' list based on your videos :) Brilliant!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much David. May I suggest taking some not so nice wood and cut a few sizes and do a test fit. You will have a lot more confidence going forward with the good wood. Also make sure your angle is perfect. And using oversize pieces to do that will get you there easily.

    • @ThePapa1947

      As far as the pieces that make the illusion for the Knuckebones bowl they are exactly the same as the Great Illusion.
      I honestly do know know what the edge length was on the filler piece for the outside. I just marked the piece after making on angled cut and then cut the rest. You can make the rings how you want them depending on the slope you want for the side wall.
      Hope that helps.

    I've watched your great illusion video plus the knuckles video. Both are fantastic! How do you know which pieces go together to make the "L"'s I'm sure they are not the same. You never mention what you used for the "end" pieces. A drawing with the wood types would be helpful. We could use whatever wood we have but at least we would know what order they go in. As others have said I know it is flat but my eyes don't always see it. You are very talented!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому

      Thank you Keith, happy you enjoyed both videos.
      The easiest way to explain which colors go where would be to look them with the idea you have 3 surfaces. Looking down the flats you are seeing are all the same wood. Looking straight on the flats are all the same wood. And looking from the right they are all the same wood. Think of the end pieces as being part of the flat surface.
      The "L" shape are made out of 3 sizes of the parallelograms and 2 of the trapezoids.
      I think looking at the picture at the end should be able to show you the order they go.
      Think about the center section it is really made up of all the "L" sections.
      In your mind slide one of the "L" sections across the center section to the opposite side and you will see it is exactly the same in all cases.
      Let me know if this makes sense and if not I would have to do this in an email.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you Jake. There are 3 shades of wood making the center section. If you make 2 of each shape that should be enough. You may have extra pieces but you should have enough. I would recommend making more than that though just so you will have a choice for the best fit and look. I tend to always make more than I know it will need not for the fitting but more for the look.
      After that the rest of the wood will be just one type.
      I actually did not make a cutting list for this or even the Great Illusion that I made.

    I love your videos. I think I have watched them all. I was happy to see your dimensions. My question is, how many of each piece and the kink of wood. how are the different woods arranged. I really want to try this.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому

      Thank you Richard. I appreciate you watching my videos.
      As far as types of wood what you need is 3 different shades to create a shadow effect. What works good is Walnut, Cherry and Maple. But then you need a darker background so the shapes will really show.
      As far as how they are arranged you have to think of it as looking from the top down and I will say the left face and then the right face. Each of those situations will have the same wood. So maybe top down is all walnut, left face might be cherry and right face would be maple. That is the best I can explain it.
      Study the picture and it will make sense.
      Also study each section and you can work out how many of each and where they go.
      Hope that makes sense but without numbering each piece that is about the only other way to do it.
      Best of luck,
      Gary

    very cool as usual Gary. I've noticed in many of your videos you seem to turn in reverse while sanding. is there a primary reason for that or is it a personal choice and if so, why?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you very much Tim. So I sand in reverse for a few reasons. One is when you are turning the fibers get lifted. Sanding in reverse takes them down easier. The other is it is more comfortable because your sanding pad or hands are above the turning not under close to the bed. Also it directs the dust toward my dust collector port.
      Hope that all makes sense.

    Excellent project Gary! I love these kinds of efforts. This was my first love when I began to work with wood in high school. Probably goes back before that when I played with building blocks as a kid. But I love these geometric patterns, and all the different illusions and shapes that can be made from them. There is no end to playing around with these shapes. I love how you explain so well how you do everything. Providing dimensions as well is really helpful. That way all the cool stuff that you do, we can all try as well. Thank you for everything you do. See you next week!

    Gary - love this project - it looks fantastic. I've got two questions. (1) what type glue were you using to have that much working time? I've been making tumbling bowls using Titebond III and I don't seem to get nearly as much time to adjust stuff as you do. (2) your bottom 6-segment ring that went up against the design piece looks great. I assume that you did a bit of sanding on the ring and the design before you glued on the additional rings...?
    Regards, Jim

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Hi Jim, happy you liked the turning.
      I used Titebond lll. One trick is to not push the pieces tight together until all the joints have glue applied. That little space really helps a lot.
      I cleaned any glue off the main design piece before adding the ring pieces. Five of them fit perfect and I left one long just to adjust if needed. So I did not have one right to size to test but I think it may have needed a little taken off. Better safe than sorry. But my sled was still setup if I had needed to cut another.

One more question - perhaps I missed it, but you didn't show how you cut the six small dark triangles that fit around the edges of the center piece. Add a wall thickness and then decide the thickness of the rings and put those lines across. At that point you will have each rings outside and inside diameter. @@ThePapa1947 thank you! Very helpful videos; when I was in my 20s I used to work with a carpenter and learned how to make wood turning tables and chairs. Now I’m planning to get ready for when I retire but this time I want to do something different. Thanks again!

      @@FilisLawnCare that is a great plan.
      I sure enjoy what I do in reitrement even though I made things out of wood for a living. Much different though. They were wood patterns used in the process of making metal castings.

    How many of each size / color

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      If you cut 2 of each shape you should have enough to make the knucklebone shape. You will have a couple extra. I always cut extra anyway. It would take 6 of the dark triangles to fill in the knucklebone and then larger segments to make the outside.
      Hope that helps,
      Gary

    About that face of yours,
    Mirror, mirror on
    the wall,
    it doesn't matter if I'm short
    or tall,
    if I have skinny legs or my hips
    are wide; it only matters who
    I am inside.
    Blue eyes, brown eyes, black or
    green, what makes me beautiful
    can't be seen. When you look at
    me don't judge me by my parts.
    The most beautiful thing about
    me is my heart.
    I’m pretty sure you have a beautiful heart, you certainly make some beautiful and interesting pieces of “art” and lm learning heaps from your videos. Cheers Y😎ORY

    Gary, I really like your videos. All beautiful work. I made the knucklebones bowl using butternut, maple, and cherry with black walnut as the rest of the base. I discovered that there is really no need for precise measurements of the component pieces. What I did was rip all my stock to the same thickness ( I used 0.75 inches ) and then use the stock to set the distance between the saw blade teeth and the stop on the fence. For the 6 dark triangles and the diamonds use one stock thickness. For the parallelograms and trapezoids use 2 stock thicknesses. Everything comes out perfect without any fiddling or measuring. I made dozens of components so in addition to the bowls I am using the knucklebones feature as the centre on some charcuterie boards.

      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      You are correct there is not need to measure anything unless you are trying to make something to an exact dimension.
      I did not measure mine either. But others needed or wanted those dimensions just to get started and understand the process.
      Good to hear it all worked out for you.
      I think I mentioned that what ever the first piece works out to be then work off of it not the dimensions I have.
      Thanks for pointing that out I sure it will help others to understand.

    It's interesting how you can get the rings to fit together so precisely. I run all of my rings through a drum sander using a jig that I made. Thanks for the videos! It inspires me to build something.

      I sand one face on my disk sander then the other on the lathe.
      Very fast and I do not have room for a drum sander.

    Gary - Perhaps I missed it, but you didn't show how you cut the six small dark triangles that fit around the edges of the center piece. Obviously they need to be the same material as the six sided ring that surrounds it. Also, they weren't shown on the dimensions at the end of the video. How did you make those little buggers?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Hi Jim,
      I did not give those dimensions but I mention they are made just like standard segments. Just a little bigger. I think it is best to measure those after all the other pieces are cut and glued together.
      Those dimensions at the end were for the Great Illusion but the center of this one is the same as the center of the Great Illusion.
      Hope that all makes sense. If not let me know.
      Gary

    As the others have commented, even as I watch you put the pieces flat on the work table, the 3D shape appears!! So very weird. I loved it Gary. My wife and I watched it a couple of times and yes, I waded into the math session as well. Strangely enough, I believe I understood the process!! Thank you so much for sharing that much work with us. As soon as this grasshopper gains patience he will attempt it.
    Cheers, Rick

      Thank you Rick. That 3D shape is pretty cool but I am working on another that is as well. It is just on paper and on my drawing program at the moment. No colors to make the effect but it still can be seen in your mind.
      I had to chuckle when you said grasshopper. Years ago I a young apprentice I was helping to train. I used to call him grasshopper and he hated it.
