Thank you Richard. If you just want a serving platter of a wall hanging you can make these flat. They still look good. But a lathe will give you a lot more options. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank You Gary....YOU ARE ALWAYS IMPRESSIVE!!!... It looks like you have used all your techniques on this project. ... Now I am thinking "where or what will Gary do in the future? How will he take this one to the next level?, HA"... This should be interesting to see what the future holds. Also I am thinking about the time you have invested in this project and if any mistakes are made (especially at the end) along the way the whole process would come to an end & have to start from the beginning, ugh! It is a WONDERFUL turning and a BEAUTIFUL bowl Gary... TM
Thank you TM. I appreciate your kind words and yes it could all go up it pieces right at the end. I try not to think about that too much but I certainly am aware of it the closer I get to the end. I thrust the hot glued tenon but that sure could be the weak link in the system if not put on correctly. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Thank you very much Kevin. Well it actually is easier and I like doing these just to show how easy it is. Sometimes the simpler looking ones can be a lot harder to do. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Neil. As that old "Alka-Seltzer" commercial used to say... Tell them...."Try It you'll like it" Lots of types of turnings and I like them all. Take care, Gary
that is my favorite moment when the poly has been applied and all the beauty of the wood comes to front and the illusion reveals itself. great job, i really love your illusion bowls
Thank you very much Irene! Yes the first coat of finish is always nice to see. I do plan on more illusion turnings but they do take time so I like filling in with other fun turnings. Thanks for watching, Gary
Every time I view your videos you bring back fond memories. Back in the 70's when my finances were poor I made atefacts and small boxes for relations birthdays using the 'Tunbridge Ware' technique. Keep those memories flowing - I look forward to your next video.
Well done, professor, as always! You just have a way of explaining and demonstrating that can't be beat. You just keep adding to your video library so that future generations can go to the card file (what?) and pull up just what they are looking for, whether to build or just be entertained. Great selection of wood for this project and a great finish seal the deal on this weeks entertainment. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! Phil
Thanks Phil. We just got back from 3 days at Beverly Beach. A bit foggy but had a great time. Sitting around the camp fire I worked on 2 others in my head. They should top this one on coolness. If I can get it done lol. Meanwhile I did come home to a piece of Black Walnut I left with one coat of finish. Should get it done for next Friday. But I did get a bit lazy sitting around the campfire. But we did ride our mountain bikes on the beach. That wear me out! Thanks for watching! Gary
I don't know about you, Phil, but my grandchildren (already in or out of college) probably don't know what a card file is. They certainly have never stood in a phone booth etc, etc, etc.
I like how the amount of thinking and planning to combine three relatively easy techniques into this fine bowl may have been as complex as some more difficult segmenting. Way to make a such a great piece by combining all three.
Thank you very much Jay. The other one I did I used a lot more wood making it. I figured why not try this. Plus I have been planning a bowl from a board with segments for a long time. So this was the perfect time to do it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Good evening, Gary. This is a wonderful project and video. I like your 3D illusion bowl. The wood choices made a great looking bowl. Recently I made one of your bowl from a board projects. On the back side I hot glued thin strips of woods. Then when you cut through the board the strips of woods hold the ring in place. Repeat for the next ring. Thanks for the interesting projects. I hit the like button.
Thanks Ray. I was going to hot glue strips on as well. Which would have worked better than what I tried. I was concerned about any binding but if it doesn't bind up to that point it should be fine. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Gary! What an amazing project. In one of your future video's would you put in a shot of your dust collection system that you have at the lathe. I'm trying to find the best way to get that sanding dust before it goes all over the place. Thanks again for these great videos!!
Thank you Dave! I will try to show how I have it hooked up. But basically right above my lathe I have a 4" pipe going to the dust collector. I have 4" flex hose that hangs down and I can adjust behind the turning to pick up the dust as I sand. About all a dust collector is good for in turning is the dust. And it does work pretty good. But I will try and show that better. Take care, Gary
Greetings from Humboldt County California. Absolutely enthralled with the illusion bowl. I have seen cutting boards made that way, never would have thought of a bowl. 6 out of 5 stars. Thanks very much for the explanation on the pieces and the dimensions.
Thank you Bob. Cutting boards are an inspiration for bowls. As well as the knitting world. Ruth Ann Berry has a book I have used for ideas, Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
Phil and Gord said it all. Not much I can add except WOW! Combining three of your signature techniques into one project was terrific. Really enjoyed watching it and learning.
Gary, well you certainly gave us all the info we need to do this one and it looks great. Nice job, also, utilizing the 3 techniques on the one project. Oh, yes, it looks great, too!
Thank you Bryon. We just got home from a 3 day trip and I have dreamed up 2 more things I want to make while sitting around the campfire. Take care, Gary
Realy cool I cannot pick a favorite of your work it is all fantastic Thank you so much for sharing Jerry in Nevada ps now I have to make this Hope it turns out half as good as yours!!!!
Thanks so much Chris. A simple design but does look pretty cool when put together like this. Those blocks can be arranged in many different ways. That is what makes it so fun. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful Gary! The contrast between the oak and the illusion is stunning. I can’t imagine you get a lot of sleep what with thinking up all these great turnings! Thank you once again. Cheers, Rick.
Thank you Rick. I did get a chance to sit around the campfire for the last 3 days and got to think up a few. That let me sleep at night LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks and for sure even making them that illusion shows up and you almost have to stop seeing it so you can add the other pieces LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
Awesome he are so talented. Enjoy all your art!! Love the 3d pieces you make. Wish I could make a perfect sled with perfect adjustable angles for my table saw. Also, I see you use a bowl Gough sometimes n other times you use a negative rake scraper. I would think the scraper would be more prone to have tear out. Just my thinking. Another beautiful, innovative project, Gary! Wow, that roasted oak sure popped when you wiped on the poly! I just love that dark, rich color. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thank you Marcia! The roasted oak is a very interesting wood. It is very light and as you can see it sort of turns to dust when cut. It cuts decently but no long shavings. And to get a nice dark wood it is reasonable in price. Thanks for watching, Gary
Papa, Another exotic, interesting and beautiful bowl 🤩. Your work is always good for a relaxing time away from the cares of a retired man’s hectic day in his recliner 🧐! The reading, catching up on UA-cam videos, maybe watching a movie can really wear a guy out 🥵. So I appreciate my time spent with you and your lathe 😎😋😎. Many thanks. Keep the aspidistra flying! Paul
Thank you very much Paul. We just spent 3 days at the coast. I don't need to tell you how sitting around the campfire in our recliners just wore me out. Then having to get up to go into the motor home and sleep in a nice warm bed. Man was I happy to get back home and get in front of the lathe and just relax LOL. Happy you enjoyed this video. Take care, Gary
Thank you very much Frederick. I do appreciate your comments on how the video was done. That really helps me a lot in the process of making them. Take care, Gary
I really think your pieces are awesome. The only problem I have is that I have vertigo and looking at your stunning pieces I get a little dizzy. You sir are definitely a master of your craft. Love 💘 Love 💗 love 💕 them all.
Thank you very much Maria. Your comments mean a lot to me and most appreciated. Sorry about the dizzy spells but they will go away LOL. Thanks again, Gary
Pretty awesome buddy. Good job

Love all your work. But your illusion is out of this world.
Thank you Jeff! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Happy you enjoyed this one.
Take care,
Gary
I never get tired of how you make 2D look 3D.
Thanks so much Stephanie!
Never wanted a lathe until now, unless I can figure out how to make them without one. Great work and great video.
Thank you Richard. If you just want a serving platter of a wall hanging you can make these flat. They still look good.
But a lathe will give you a lot more options.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl. Great idea using the Bowl from a Board technique for the sides.
Thank you Greg. I did want higher sides and figured why not do with segment turned into a bowl from a board.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful Gary.
Nico thank you very much and thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary that is beautiful.
Thank you Jane! Happy you liked it.
Take care,

I love the simplicity of it all, the only variable like you mentioned is the height of the material used, thanks for talking us through the procedure.
Thank you very much James!
Well done, Gary. Who would have thought how easy that is, or maybe you just make it look easy. 🤔
Thank you very much Kevin. Well it actually is easier and I like doing these just to show how easy it is.
Sometimes the simpler looking ones can be a lot harder to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another FANTASTIC illusion piece. Some day I’ll get up the courage to try one of these, but first I need to build a wedgy sled.
Thank you Michael. For sure it is worth trying and not all that hard to do.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
fantastic work. thanks for sharing your art
Nicky thank you very much. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

Another masterpiece Gary. Thank you for sharing.
Many thanks Les and thanks for watching.

Thank you Neil. As that old "Alka-Seltzer" commercial used to say... Tell them...."Try It you'll like it"
Lots of types of turnings and I like them all.
Take care,
Gary
Well done Gary. This looks fairly easy so I'm going to get a try. Thanks
Thank you Jim and it is pretty easy. If you get stuck let me know and I can probably make it even easier.
Gary
Gary: Would the illusion work with maple, cherry and mahogany ? I'm also thinking of purple heart for the large wedge pieces on the outside. Thank Jim
Hi Jim, yes maple, cherry and mahogany will work fine. Purple Heart is a nice contrast for the other 3 types.
Have fun,
Gary
Absolutely gorgeous!!! 😄
Thank you very much Marge. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,

Wow what a challenge. It came out fantastic and would be a great chip bowl or you could have left it flat for serving cheese or the like. Good job.
Thank you Tim! Happy you liked it and it does need to be used for something. Maybe some wrapped treats. Hmm Halloween is coming soon.

I mostly use the carbide round tips on the tools I made. Great job Buddy
Thank you Bob! Once you have your sled dialed in it will work perfectly. I
I mostly do the turning with a bowl gouge The negative rake scraper is a very good tool for cleaning up cuts and will give you a nice finish.
Where as a normal scraper can tear the wood up a lot.
Thanks for watching,

Very well done Gary. You inspire the rest of us. If I ever get my shop back in shape I'm going to try this.
Thank you Richard and best of luck when you get back to the shop.

Another stunning masterpiece, Gary!
Thank you Dave. Sitting around the camp fire and only a few pieces of wood left. I need to lock up 3 special pieces before the boss gets ideas LOL
Kudos to you; along with the bowl, I thought that you did a particularly good job on the video itself: content , pacing, not to much repeating etc.
Thank you very much Frederick. I do appreciate your comments on how the video was done. That really helps me a lot in the process of making them.
Take care,

amigo muy bueno su trabajo pero le falto mas lija
Gracias, pero ¿por qué dirías más papel de lija? No había rasguños en él si eso es lo que estás pensando.
Another very well done video on a great project. You are a tremendous inspiration to the entire woodturning community. Thanks
Thank you very much Richard! I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.

I love the 3-D images! I started out making 3-D end grain cutting boards and now just getting into turning. Keep them coming!
Thank you Douglas. I have not done any cutting boards in 3D. I assume you are making them end grain?
