Lovely job pretty sure it's white oak it came from my sawmilling offcuts. If anyone is interested in milling there's a few videos on my channel thankyou.
Right near the end I became pretty sure that it was white oak based in the size of the rays. I surfaced hardwood lumber for about a decade. Nice bowl, Mike.
OMG the moment it flew off was such a shock! But as you once said, a turner doesn't make mistakes, just smaller bowls. The result is amazing! Those swirls look like a Van Gogh painting.
Mike, not only is that oak bowl stunning but I enjoy that you share that not everything goes perfectly even when you’re working. And you talked through options to recover from your fine piece of art flying halfway across the workshop. Fabulous job as always and thank you for joining me as I ate dinner.
It's always nice when the boss has a frisky sense of humor. It does have an essence of Van Gogh which is kind of a trip in itself. Thanks for another great video. 🍺
Came for the wood turning, stayed for the lady's sense of humor. She seems like great fun! Lovely piece again. Simple style lets the beauty of the grain shine. I really enjoy your posts, thank you :)
My favourite part of most of your videos is after sanding when you apply the alcohol and can finally see the figure really pop out, and this one was no exception!
It was quite a relief for both of us when you cut back the spongy areas only reveal more swirling grain. The black Milliput was a perfect complement to the general color of the bowl. You, and the mighty 1/2” bowl gouge, what a super combo! Great job Mike!👍🏻 Joe CA
Every time I think something about the bowl is wrong, you pull something out of the wood, you adjust the design, your colors do something magical, and you stun me once again. It’s beautiful, Mike. Well done!
Beautiful, the grain looks like something out of van Gogh’s imagination! I really felt it when it flew off, but you still made it work. And that cheeky little “that’s what she said” from your wife off camera was great.🤣
Mr H you are a wood whisperer. Stunning piece, with incredible grain patterns and the shape is perfect. Almost forgot it was Tuesday so late to watching this week. Thanks as always for sharing and have a super evening and rest of the week 🤗
I can't help but watch your videos while I'm at work, eating my lunch. Each project you make, makes me want to try turning. I seriously doubt my OCD would allow it though, seeing the piles of shavings. Beautiful work as always Mike!!!
After watching all your videos. I am still amazed and fascinated. What lovely stuff you make. Just so beautiful. Nice way to finish of a long day. Sat with a coffee. Watching to see what you turn out. So relaxing thank you.
I've never seen so many swirls! Fantastic! Yes, like Van Gogh... One of my favorite painters, after the Total Immersion Experience. As always, I love how you just take everything in stride, and find a working solution to every mishap--you really are amazing! So glad to watch all your videos.😊
It may sound like me being spiteful... but it is really comforting that I am not the only one who produces flying bowls when trying to hollow them out. If a master like you lets bowls fly every now and then, then there is still hope for a hobbyist like me without being just straight to dumb. Thank you for showing us the whole truth of the process! - and I´m in love with that piece, the wood, the swirls...
Thanks Judith, it happens to us all and I'm just trying to be as honest as I can, I'm not perfect but I am getting pretty good at fixing problems lol 😀
I really love this bowl. I’m amazed at how you can take a piece of wood and make it into a beautiful bowl. I really love the shape you chose for it as well. Keep up with the great work. 😃❤
Thanks Robert, I live in the real world where things go wrong, hopefully by showing everyone how to deal with problems we can all learn a little more 😀
If Van Gogh had been a wood turner, a deep blue stain would have turned this into The Starry Night bowl. The figuring is amazing and you did such a wonderful job!
That is another stunner and how you recovered from that was fantastic. As Bob Ross would say no mistakes just happy little accidents and the way the grain of the wood stayed has complimented your work. As others have said there’s even a fabulous van Gogh painting to be seen as well :-)
I love that you rescue flawed/damaged/imperfect wood and turn (see what I did there) the blemishes into beauty marks. So much more interesting than perfect which can get a bit boring after a while.
Well, there's another amazing piece of art, Mike! I was concerned about the black putty, but seeing it finished, it didn't affect the appearance at all. It seemed to pull out the life and history of the wood. Have a great day! ❤😊
Thank you very much Simon, that piece of wood was just beautiful. I scoured the offcut to see if I could do anything more with it but I think I had had the best from it.
Perseverance and fortitude... maybe a touch of stubbornness? 😁 Determination to see the rough beginning through to the gorgeous end. Such a lovely piece. Thank you once again for sharing your talents. You are blessed! ☺️
Lovely job pretty sure it's white oak it came from my sawmilling offcuts. If anyone is interested in milling there's a few videos on my channel thankyou.
Thanks so much Wayne, such an amazing piece, how long had it been dry stored?
Probably 6 or 7 years I'd say 👍
Right near the end I became pretty sure that it was white oak based in the size of the rays. I surfaced hardwood lumber for about a decade. Nice bowl, Mike.
Lovely bowl and I like the different shape as well! Well done as usual.
@@markmarshall5482 Thanks Mark 😀
OMG the moment it flew off was such a shock! But as you once said, a turner doesn't make mistakes, just smaller bowls. The result is amazing! Those swirls look like a Van Gogh painting.
I agree, they look exactly like the sky in Starry Night and the Scream.
Thanks Alba, I know just what you mean! 😀
@@joesmith-es1zy It's amazing how many egg cups turners have in the kitchen cupboard LOL.
Watched because it reminded me of my Dad. A beautiful bowl.
Thanks Debbie, glad it brought back memories for you, all the best, Mike

Thanks Stu, my wife is amazing in so many ways 😀
Beautiful as usual, I can imagine a medieval monk sat eating his lunch out of a bowl like that😊
That would be a nice use for it 😀
Came for the wood turning, stayed for the lady's sense of humor. She seems like great fun! Lovely piece again. Simple style lets the beauty of the grain shine. I really enjoy your posts, thank you :)
Thanks Michelle, she is completely amazing 😀
My favourite part of most of your videos is after sanding when you apply the alcohol and can finally see the figure really pop out, and this one was no exception!
Thanks Robert, that has to be my favourite part as well 😀
It was quite a relief for both of us when you cut back the spongy areas only reveal more swirling grain. The black Milliput was a perfect complement to the general color of the bowl. You, and the mighty 1/2” bowl gouge, what a super combo! Great job Mike!👍🏻
Joe CA
Thanks Joe, the gouge is doing good but getting shorter, I think it has about another 5 months of turning left in it lol 😀
Mike a beautiful piece of wood and a stunning bowl nicely done and a great save,
Cheers From will 👍
Cheers Will, thanks for stopping by 😀
Very beautiful piece of wood, I think you have got the best out of it.
Thanks Brian, me too 😀
Nothing better than the simple beauty of this beautiful oak.
The journey on this one was not so simple but again we have a great guide.
🙏
Thanks so much Nicholas 😀
Every time I think something about the bowl is wrong, you pull something out of the wood, you adjust the design, your colors do something magical, and you stun me once again. It’s beautiful, Mike. Well done!
Thanks so much Susannah 😀
Most people don't like oak but I really like the character and medulary rays in oak.
Me too, it can be a pain to turn but I love it 😀
“That’s what she said!” Classic response! I love it! Beautiful work and great save.
Haha thanks Geoffrey 😂
Love natural oak
Me too 😀
A beautiful bowl with a lovely shape. I gasp when it flew off. So glad that it wasn't broken completely.
Thanks Wes, me too 😀

Thanks Fiona, this was fun and the grain is just so unusual, hope your week is amazing 😀
@MikeHolton Thanks Mike 😊
I love the grain patterns on this dry oak piece.💚🤗
Thank you! Cheers Aleta 😀
Love how you adapt to all the little challenges chance throws at you to produce beautiful pieces. 😊❤
Thanks Barbara, if it was all plain sailing it would get a little boring lol 😀

I love the character of the wood in this piece. So complex!
Thanks Scott, it is just amazing! 😀
Definitely a very nice white oak bowl!
Thanks Jeramiah 😀
That wood has so much character to it and the bowl shape really shows it off. I'll take 6 please! 😀
Haha, I wish I could find another 1 piece of wood like this let alone 6 lol 😀
I love the grain patterns of Oak. ❤❤❤❤

Simply lovely yet again. The filled cracks seem to actually enhance the amazing grain.
Thanks Victoria 😀
Again, a beautiful bowl.
Thank you so much Philippa😊
In spite of adversity, what a nice piece
Cheers Ken 😀
What a beautiful bowl. I love the grain in piece. Those swirls of grain reminded me of surface pictures of the planet Mars.
Thanks Barry and I know what you mean 😀
Gorgeous, I love this type of Grain! It's amazing the patterns that nature can create in wood growth! 👍
I know Steve, I have seen it before but never had the chance to turn it 😀
Beautiful! I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who’s launched a bowl!😢
Haha all part of turning Stan 😀
It's stunning, Oak, made better by your skill.
Thanks so much Mark 😀
It is so amasing. So amasing.
Thanks Lis 😀
My heart was in my mouth when the bowl went flying across the room! Well recovered Mike, and as usual a stunning work of art🙂
Thanks Spike, thank goodness I work with wood and not clay lol 😀
I really like how natural this bowl looks. I love oak.
Thanks, me too 😀

Thanks so much Shelley, no point in making a fuss about problems encountered while doing something I love 😀
Nice recovery, Mike! So nice to see pieces out of wood that might otherwise end up in the fireplace.
Thanks John, I search every day for pieces like this 😀
Great demonstration of how to get the most out of a piece of wood. Really nice!
Thank you very much Mark 😀
Beautiful bowl. I love the character in the wood. Nicely done!

Hello Mike!
You made my day.
Your work is just amazing.
And inspiring to so many of us. Thank you.
Thanks Michael, so nice of you to say 😀
Great character in the wood. Good save with the foot.
Thanks! I'm getting good at saves lol 😀
great job of saving a lovey piece of firewood.Turned out great
Thanks so much Paul 😀
I'm impressed by how natural the putty repairs look.
Thanks Ben, the black works well, it does not distract from the grain 😀
Amazing grain! I'm so pleased with how it turned out.
Thanks Kirsty 😀
Love , love, love.

Thanks Sylvia, me too lol 😀
WOW, WOW, WOW! Wow for the amount of work, wow for the piece, and just plain wow!
Thanks so much Molly 😀
Mike. It's always amazing what the wood has to share with us. Great piece.
Couldn't agree more Mark 😀
It sure looks like all the red oak I’ve worked with. Nice little bowl
Thanks, believe it or not, the guy that sold it to me told me it's white oak lol 😀
Love this one , like the fact that you also show when things go wrong some turners out there would hide that , well done again
Thanks Robert, I live in the real world where things go wrong, hopefully by showing everyone how to deal with problems we can all learn a little more 😀
Really nice bowl with the grain patterns and again unfazed by the bowl leaping off the chuck
Thanks Paul, a bowl flying off the lathe is just another day at the office lol 😂
Beautiful grain and figuring on the bowl.
Thanks Jim 😀
Well worked out from a difficult piece of wood the result is stunning, I love the rustic feel to it.
Thank you very much John, me too 😀
Indeed an amazing piece of oak.. and a pretty design bowl, it shows the swirls so nicely 👌.. I can see the face in it too.. 👍
Thanks Wendy 😀
Excellent work
Thank you! Cheers! 😀
@@MikeHolton 🙏🙏❤❤
Great job, Mike. Beautiful bowl. It's definitely white oak. You can tell by the grain and color.
Thanks, this has also been confirmed by the gentleman who sold me the piece 😀
Beautiful oak.
Thanks 😀
Good morning Mike! You find the most beautiful woods! Cheryl from Jacksonville FL USA❤
Good morning Cheryl, thanks! I look for something interesting to turn every day 😀
If Van Gogh had been a wood turner, a deep blue stain would have turned this into The Starry Night bowl. The figuring is amazing and you did such a wonderful job!
Thanks Aaron, you are right and I may just take off the finish and give it a go 😀
Lovely bowl, the wood is amazing.
Thank you very much Gail 😀
That is some amazing grain.
I know! It's amazing! 😀
I think the mishap was actually a blessing, because the proportions look better with that narrow base a little shorter.
I think so too, sometimes, things happen for a reason lol 😀
That is another stunner and how you recovered from that was fantastic. As Bob Ross would say no mistakes just happy little accidents and the way the grain of the wood stayed has complimented your work. As others have said there’s even a fabulous van Gogh painting to be seen as well :-)
Thanks so much Martin, there is a lot of van Gough in this grain 😀
Beautiful simple oak bowl Mike
Thanks Dale, I really like this one 😀
Love those swirls! Very nice! Thanks Mike!
Thanks Brenda, they are quite unusual 😀
You outdid yourself again, another lovely piece !
Thanks Nana 😀
Wow, that's absolutely gorgeous and I love the colours and markings in the wood. ❤❤❤😊
Thanks so much Karen😊
This one was a roller coaster. But I like how it turned out!
It was! But we got there, thanks Mega 😀
It's so beautiful. I really live all the swirls and patterns in the bowl.
Me too Mary, thank you so much 😀
@@MikeHolton You’re very welcome.
I love that you rescue flawed/damaged/imperfect wood and turn (see what I did there) the blemishes into beauty marks. So much more interesting than perfect which can get a bit boring after a while.
Completely agree Cecilia, I search all over for pieces like this to turn, so much more interesting 😀
Lovely piece of oak. Nice ageing to it.
Yes indeed Mike, this one is pretty nice 😃
Some crazy grain going on there.....beautiful bowl 👍
It sure is thanks 😀
Dang! That’s good looking oak! I recommend watching Mike on a big tv to get the effects of the beauty shots.
Thanks Marty, about 40% of my viewers watch on TV 😀
Beautiful little bowl! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome Mary 😀
Thats great, I love Oak.
Me too, thanks Lucy 😀
I so enjoy your process and hearing your thoughts as you work through the design.
Thanks Leslie, I really appreciate that 😀
A remarkable piece, thanks for sharing your journey warts and all with it
Thanks Tim, whatever happens is exactly what I show, you learn more from mistakes so I'm happy to show them. 😀
Well, there's another amazing piece of art, Mike! I was concerned about the black putty, but seeing it finished, it didn't affect the appearance at all. It seemed to pull out the life and history of the wood. Have a great day! ❤😊
Thanks Matilda, that putty really works well to help set off the wood 😀
I've turned several pieces of oak like that with that same pattern. Very nice job on the piece 👏
Thanks James, I have seen this grain before but first time turning some👍
That has a amazing grain it that so amazing what can come out of a piece of wood ❤
Thanks Wendy, I completely agree 😁
Another very fine piece of Art. A great bowl with some incredible swirls and patterns. Well done Mike. Cheers
Thank you so much Peter😀
Love this piece, the combination of, what I feel is, an old Celtic style, the beauty of the Oak really is a testament to your skill and artistry.
Thank you very much Simon, that piece of wood was just beautiful. I scoured the offcut to see if I could do anything more with it but I think I had had the best from it.
Super cool grain pattern
It's pretty special! 😀

Thanks Cynthia, you are always so kind and I really do appreciate it 😀
I have to agree, definitely Red Oak. White Oak doesn't give the same or similar colouring and swirls of the grain. Great finish Mike
Thanks Dave, of course it could be brown oak or even holm oak but red is still my best guess 😀
Another fantastic piece
Thank you! Cheers Robert 😀
Beautiful as always ❤️, the grain is wonderful.
Thanks so much Luann 😀
