Your design is my favorite part, Gary! Sometimes I accidentally get a shape like that but I never start out intending to. It really makes the piece stand out! Your finish, as always, is flawless! Beautiful piece of Cherry from Rick, too! Sorry you had to go through the tedium of dealing with that bark. It can be a real pain. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil
Thanks Phil. Not sure why but I was feeling that shape. I think it was the grain that had me go that way. Sure glad it worked out. Sometimes it feels like that bark is picking on you.but it worked out. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Thank you very much Alan. Well you should really like the one I just finished. It was a really bugger to turn the the grain is so cool. I may post it in 2 weeks. Do not want all the same wood coming LOL Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Thank you Dick. No that old sander is still going. The problem was it has cord and where I plug it in I am always trying to trip on the cord. I do like that old sander though. Take care, Gary
Another beauty Gary, that cherry is sure lovely! Love the color and shape and the bark turned out perfect even though it was a bit more trouble, well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thank you Bill. I try to get different shapes or they will all look the same. But I let the grain help in those designs as well. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Huw! I didn't really plan on doing another piece of Cherry after this but then I spotted a multi crotch piece and just had to do it. It was a very hard turn but I think you will like it. Hwyl, Gary
Thanks so much Colin. I have another live edge Cherry bowl coming. I think you will like this one. The grain and color are on steroids! Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Crystal. For sure there is beauty in this wood. Just had to turn down to find it. Which is why wood turning is so fun. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great looking wee bowl Gary. So glad you managed to save & keep the bark, that just makes the bowl. Cherry is a stunning looking wood anyway. Such a pity that it's a bit pricey over here in my area.
Thank You Gary, Thank You Rick Chapman.... Another very nice piece of Cherry...Beautiful live edge turning. Extremely well executed. I like the rolled over top it gives a softer look ..Until next time.. TM
Thank you very much Patricia. They are fun to turn and you just do not know what you are going to get compared to a round bowl. But I love turning round bowls as well. Gary
Thank you Doug. Yes I think you have Cherry ranked it the right spot for sure. I did not get enough of it so I have another piece of Cherry coming soon. The grain is just crazy!!!! Gary
Hi, it's me using too much shellac haha! You're absolutely right, I was using a lot to try and firm up some punky spalted maple. I should've just done several thin coats instead of trying to sop it on. Thanks for the tip!
I like that shape, and the wood is so pretty, both the grain and the color. I’m glad you got the bark to cooperate, as it wouldn’t be nearly as nice without it. Beautiful bowl, Gary!
Love the Shape Gary. I've done a couple with a similar shape and they are some of my favorites. (Certainly not as perfect as yours but I'm still learning).
Thank you very much Judith. For sure it is fascinating watching the stock come off a turning. From my angle it does not look the same but love to see it when I edit the video. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks John. Those are always fun to do.
Gary what a lovely Live E cherry bowl it turned out really smashing. I think Cherry is a lovely wood, and the colour really came alive as well

Wonderful job Gary. The shape is really great. It looks like your old sanding drill has given up the ghost.
Thank you Dick. No that old sander is still going. The problem was it has cord and where I plug it in I am always trying to trip on the cord.
I do like that old sander though.

Thanks for the video Gary. I really like the shape and the bark on it. Very tedious but worth it in my opinion.
Thank you so much Anita. Well when the wood is this nice I am willing to put in the extra work to give that bark a haircut.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Very nice i love cherry except the bark , it whips my fingers 😂😂😂 i have to debark before turning
Thank you Vini. For sure Cherry is one of the nicer woods we have around here.

That is one sharp bowl, great colors and grains. When you were sanding and holding the bowl I recalled another guy on UA-cam with a Laguna lathe who took a magnet with some round stock attached to it to hold the button depressed that locks the headstock spindle from turning. One of these days I will get around to making one for myself as I have a Laguana lathe myself. Much easier than trying to hold your work by hand. Thought I would throw that out there ,maybe you will find that a helpful tip?
Thank you John!
This is the video I made right after I bought my Laguna. It will show you how to make the spindle lock I came up with.

It has the appearance of an old Spanish galleon when viewed from the side - aftcastle and forecastle.
Thanks John. It is cool how we can see all kinds of things in our turnings.

Hello Gary, what a beautiful bowl you made ! And what is cherry a fine wood in where you can see the line-play in the rounding in the bowl. Wonderful made.
Thanks so much Jan I appreciate your comments.

Geeeezz...saw some of that off first
Thanks for the input. Sawing it off takes away any chance of a shape you might want. But sawing it off first is good if you are a beginner for sure. Or you know for sure you want it round.
Beautiful bowl and a great finish on that. Really like the shape. Do you do anything for sanding in between coats of sealcoat or the shellac at all?
How would I be able to contact you to send you some wood?

@@ThePapa1947 I don’t see a link there at all Gary.
Why do you always leave that hump/nipple in the middle of the bowl when you are hollowing? Is it necessary?
Hi Tom, well it is not necessary at all. If you are talking about at the end of cutting I like to take that off with a scraper.
This is easier than a gouge and with the gouge you could cut below the rest of the surface and need to flatten it again.
If you are talking about while hollowing it just sort of gets left because starting the cut dead center is much harder so it is faster just to get some good cuts and come back and deal with it.
