It’s a beautiful bowl, Gary, there is so much going on in the grain. I think leaving the bark on that size bowl really added to the attractiveness of the piece. A question for you, if I may, what angle do you grind your negative scraper at? Thanks for another great video.

Thanks Kent. My NRS is ground 40 degrees top and bottom. This gives it less than a 90 which is recommended.

Beautiful Gary! Looks like marble from some angles. Stunning colour and grain! Last summer I made friends with an Okanagan cherry orchardist. He has been saving me pieces from his trees that either have to come down or get hard pruned. He even painted the end grain and keeps them under tarps. Looking forward to collecting some this spring! Cheers, Rick

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this piece! It’s stunning! And I really appreciate that you always report on what tool you use and at what speed you turn. Telling how much time you spend sanding is super informative. (when I watch the video, I dont get a full appreciation for how much work goes into the sanding.). Your videos inspire me to keep learning and keep turning. THANK YOU!

    Good afternoon, Gary.
I really enjoyed watching this bowl go through the process. A lot of chips at the beginning but enjoy the journey. When the beautiful grain comes into focus is a time for smiles. The hollowing can test the nerves but the reward when final wall thickness is achieved is with the challenge. You are very successful with your finishing process. Time to watch a great project spin on the turntable for a while.
    Very nice.

Good job, buddy! This Cherry gave you some resistance but, you overcame it like a champ! I have a Cherry bowl coming up and it has some of those same dark areas. I've turned a lot of Cherry but never seen that before and now yours has it, too. Almost looks burned. Anyway, I really like the live edge on this one and the finish is great as always! Fun stuff. Cherry is one of the woods that I work with the most. Because I have Black Cherry growing behind my house. Even before I started turning, I made bowls out of it, and boy was that hard work. Now with the lathe, the bowls are much deeper and rounder. I really enjoy the lathe. Between you and Phil Anderson l, I've learned a lot about this stuff. So thanks for the free education. Of course, I learned even more by making mistakes and having to figure out what to do with them. But having examples on UA-cam is such a blessing.

The image quality on this video is superb! Now we can really see what you are working with.
I could even see the defects in the wood very early on. They are the same as what I have to work with, typical for Cherry.
By now I believe that the only way to turn bowls without cracks is to rough-turn them green and let them dry at least a few months.
Then finish them at a later stage. Anyway, you did a great job Gary! Thnx for sharing. 😎

What do you think it was that helped to see more in the video? I am always working on that.
As far as the crack in this one it was a bark inclusion. from a small branch that was at that point. Not sure there was any other cracks in it.
I am not all that fond of twice turned bowls but I may be doing that soon to get some pieces for a special request.
If I do I will explain the meaning behind it. Pretty special reasons for sure.

@@ThePapa1947 Thank you Gary! I'm sure I saw quite a few checks early on in the video and unrelated to the bigger one you mentioned. Maybe it was due to the falling of the tree or just from drying. It is what I often see in my own wood, especially in Cherry but also in other species.

A beautiful piece of cherry, my favorite turning wood. I usually saw my crotch pieced in half and end up with shallow bowls or platters. I may try your technique on the next one. Crotch wood usually has an interesting and beautiful grain structure; it's more work (sometimes a lot more) but is generally worth the effort and time. This piece will continue to darken with time . The bark adds extra interest and beauty. Good job.

I love that you go for unusual finished shapes, keep the inclusions, the bark, the "defects", even though it makes it harder to turn. I want to express one wish - a finish other than shellac... say, bowl butter!? I make mine from beeswax and food-grade mineral oil, but it can be made of other oils too.... just something more natural than shellac. I'll keep watching whether I get my wish or not because I absolutely enjoy everything else you're doing!... I just so love hand-rubbed, natural materials finishes.....

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Місяць тому +1

Thank you very much Tracy. I do like natural edge pieces and I love doing segmented wood turnings.
I started using lacquer in high school shop class and got hooked on it.
Shellac actually is a natural finish unlike lacquer and poly. Shellac s 100% natural. It's actually the secretion from the Lac insect.
What I look for is a finish that will last and keep the same look. I know walnut oil needs to be freshened up now and then.
But I understand what you are saying about a wax finish.
I have turning coming up next Friday that is finished with a wax so I use it now and then. Probably nothing like you use as it is a commercial product and not food safe.
I tell you what I will give a wax finish like you suggest on something soon. Matter of fact I have a video showing how to make a beeswax and mineral oil finish. ua-cam.com/video/kDpXKMXmZBs/v-deo.html

Morning to the pattern maker and turner extraordinaire! Nice job, despite a bit of a wrestle. I like turning crotched pieces so i was interested in this vid. Why crotch pieces? The fascinating grain strucure particularly on the inside of the vessel - nature at her best! I did smile when I saw you using a carbide too. Me, too, cos I sometimes can't get in when using a gouge, particularly if I'm trying to hold a central column with tail stock support. Well done Gary & good to see you again!
