    For what it’s worth, between 1985 and 1990, using NFT (nutrient film technology) testing cultivars of Cos lettuce, Bib lettuce and spinach, I found the optimum vegetative root temperature to be 84°F.
    Cultivars were germinated on Rockwall blankets using tap water with high calcium content , pH around 6 ( from memory) and zero chlorine, then transferred to individual growth stations in an NFT system. Once individual plants were transferred into the growing system, the nutrient solution was held at an EC of 1.2.
    The objective of the experiment was to determine which, if any, root temperature gave the most vegetative growth. I don’t remember doing any taste testing. I merely measured the height and robustness of the plants. It was not a double blind study, I only tested for the purpose of determining optimum root temperature.

    In a commercial grow an extra day advantage would be financially better with a full rack of sunflower over a whole year. One interesting experiment would to use the heat mat just for germination only then end it on shelf without heat to see if you would get a higher yield or not. Also it would be interesting to see if germination percent is better with heat mat or not. Great video that raises even more fun experiements.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому

      Exactly! It really does raise more questions, especially because I've only experimented with 78F... I can set it up to 108F, so I kind of want to play in 5-10F incremental increases to see when it doesn't help anymore. I will start an experiment and try your suggestion! Great vid thanks again. I wonder how much weight the non-heatmat trays would have put on if they were left for a day longer than the heatmat trays. In any event it seems worth it to use a heatmat considering the day saved on shelf space which is important for turning product around quickly plus a day saved on lighting.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому

      Thank you for the support! I really think that the tray without heat could've gained the 150g difference with another 24 hours. A day quicker turnaround, over the course of a season is a pretty massive gain.

    Nice experiment you two! For consideration, what may happen if a no direct heat tray is put on a bottom rack, a no direct heat tray is set on the rack above to receive the passive light heat from the no heat unit below, and a direct heat applied under a tray on top shelf. 3 shelves, 3 variations, is the middle shelve the cost effective beneficiary of the passive heat? -Bob...

    If you had two seperate rooms for germinating and growing, I think you could even lower the ambient temperature for germinating like 1-5C°(?), have the same grow results and save on electricity (I would say, the heat mat doesn't use as much electricity to heat than to heat the air ... )
    Great video overall, thank you :) maybe you could "cut" some corners in the video and save like 3-4 minutes :)

      Hello CeleCraft ! Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day. 😊 Because we grow in a trailer, we already know that all environmental factors are huge..temperature swings and humidity are a few!

    What if you use a slate tray instead of a heat-mat? Slate should hold and retain the heat from the lights and you don't have to put any extra energy (electricity cost) in there.

  • @sooooooooDark

    so the question then arises: may it be better to heat up the whole room by a bit - money efficiency-wise - if it takes down the "time to harvest" by 15% (possibly for other greens too)

    Does suggest to keep costs down while still getting the germination improvement that one might use heat-pad for only first 2-3 days and then treat them the same.
    This would cut heat cost in half while seemingly not making growth suffer.

    • @OnTheGrow
