    What is the most difficult for you to control? Temperature, Humidity, or Air Flow?

      You should be able to find soil in a place like Denver. There are people in third world countries who really struggle to find supplies etc. Have you tried reaching out to a local greenhouse distribution company or nursery? What soil do you prefer?

    • @prajaktabankar821

      Humidity.... The place where I stay the humidity is usually more than 60%. I was thinking to put a layer of growing medium over the seeds and check how it works? I have already tried growing seeds densely and sparsely, both cases I got mold. Because I am growing microgreens at home currently I am not planning to buy a dehumidifier. What humidity level do you prefer in germination room?

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  4 роки тому +2

      I prefer my humidity around 50% but lately its been around 70% because of the humid spring season here and less air conditioning vs summer which helps to dry out the air.

    Great video Donny we like to think of the Airflow / Temperature / Humidity triangle as an equation, as in our experience the appropriate levels of each are directly dependent on one another!
    We do however feel that if we had to pick the most important and the one we have struggled with the most over the years it would defiantly be AIRFLOW / Air Exchange!
    A tip we think is often missed is that regardless of the amount of Air Flow in your grow, you will need sufficient Air Exchange, or you will just be moving stale air around, witch does very little good!
    Speaking from experience :)

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  4 роки тому +3

      Love the triangle equation 💚 And you make a very good point with the air exchange. I see that being a difficult one to solve/implement. Lately i open both doors of my farm and crank the fans to clear out humidity. How have you improved air exchange?

    Hey, I have a greenhouse 100'x40' and I bought 2 "quest 506" dehumidifiers to regulate the humidity. What's the best way to optimize the use of the humidifiers?
    Am I supposed to close of all the vents when using the humidifiers (just like when you use an AC)? Or Am I supposed to let the vents opened?
    Leaving the vents opened brings air from the outside and help with air flow and reduce the temperature. However, if I let the vents opened (at night or when it rains) I feel like there would be more humidity coming inside the greenhouse.
    I cannot find any good info on how to maximize the use of a dehumifier in a greenhouse.

    Hi Donny I LOVE your videos, I am a complete novice when it comes to growing microgreens. Here's my situation, I live in Las Vegas, NV this entire week we've had outdoor temps at 117 Degrees daytime and low 100's at night. Regardless of what temp I put the AC on it cannot keep up. I have indoor temp of 80 degrees. I was considering putting insulation on walls and then creating a plastic room inside my grow room. I also need to figure out my humidity since it is extremely dry. I have metal racks, The reccomended trays, Tru Leaf seeds, The ideal soil mixture ( i hope) fans and sunblaster lighting. ANY suggestion you may have to get the room temp correct would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Donny! I'm currently growing in my basement and have made back more $ in 2 months than it cost me to set up! A slight problem I'm seeing is that some of my trays seem to sag a little in the middle, due to the raised edges of my shelves around the top. I'm using the wire racks that are similar to yours but in chrome. Do you use some kind of plastic barrier in that space inside the perimeter of each shelf to compensate, or have you not noticed a difference? I'm thinking it's why some of my trays have smaller and weaker plants on the front and back while the rest of the tray flourishes. Thanks for any tips!!

      Hey Stephen! I am a traveling private chef, but considering a switch in professions. I love the health benefits of microgreens and know there’s a demand back home, especially for chefs (just for garnishes). I would like the set up a microgreen farm in my basement (like you mentioned in your comment), and I was just wondering what hoops (if any) you had to jump through with authoritative entities like the health department while growing in your own home. Is it one of those situations where “it’s easier to ask for forgiveness thank permission?” This question/concern is probably the only thing holding me back, aside from quitting my job.
      Any info or encouragement is appreciated! Thanks!!

    I have been growing microgreens for a month. I can't figure out if humidity will affect the yield/growth of my plants. My room is very humid (around 70%) but I haven't had any major mold problems. Should I buy a dehumidifyer to have better yields?

    Great video. We are researching growing microgreens (as a hobby, first) - but my biggest concern at this point is the growing environment. The only space we have available is our basement, which stays consistently at 62 degrees. Are there grow lights that also generate heat, possibly pairing these with a reflective/insulated draped over grow racks, but with ventilation slots for airflow? We want to get something small going, but we have to use what we have available at this time.

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  4 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment! I think growing as a hobby first is a good idea because it’ll give some insight as to whether you will like doing it as a business/career. Fluorescent lights like the ones I use will help drive the heat up a bit in your grow room. I wouldn’t drape anything over the racks. How big is the space you're working with?

    • @lavendergal2508
      @lavendergal2508 4 роки тому +1

      I’ve been trying to get my micro greens business up and running. My grow room is in my basement as well. I have two dehumidifiers and a large floor fan. The humidity stays right at 50% and the temperature stays around 70. I have to say that I worry that the greens smell musty. I don’t smell a musty basement but I worry that when the customer gets their greens home they may smell musty. I’m really rethinking putting it in another part of the house

    • @DavidRyanTaylor
      @DavidRyanTaylor 4 роки тому +1

      Lavendergal - We haven’t had an issue with a musty smelling microgreens so far. Our issue so far is getting even heating. We are using 10x20 heat mats (with thermostatic control and a temp probe inserted into our soil), but the heat mats do not produce even, edge-to-edge heating. The edges of our trays do not grow as evenly as the center 90%. I feel like the only way to achieve this (since our basement is so cool) is by creating a microclimate for our grow racks to create an evenly heated, steady environment. Not sure how to achieve this yet. Once we have a dedicated space in our future home, it won’t be an issue. But for now... thinking about creating a “wrap” to insulate our racks from the rest of the basement, to contain the heat. Since we have small fans on each rack, we’d still have circulating air, but I worry a closed environment would get too humid and too warm, and be difficult to regulate.

    Thanks for another informative video Donny! My airflow is a challenge> I have an infinity computer fan on each shelf, I also have three small honeywell fans in the room, one on the top of the rack blowing the warmer air away from the rack and two about 8 feet away one at 30" above the floor and one at 55" pointed half on the rack and half in front of the rack. Im trying to create a circular type of airflow. Should I avoid blowing directly on the rack?

      There is a course linked in my video descriptions and is the course I started with. It covers the basics. UA-cam is a great free resource. And we also just started an MBA (Microgreens Business Accelerator) program which is more for people with an already-established business. I hope to create my own course in the future but all I have so far are these videos and a small instagram feed haha. I'll keep making more content which will help you

    Is there are recommendation of how big a dehumidifier is needed for a certain size room? Do you keep a generator?

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  3 роки тому +1

      I don't have a generator but that is a a great idea to improve resilience! Dehumidifiers typically have ratings that will inform you of those types of details. I use a big dehumidifier by Quest that is made for commercial agricultural operations

    What do you do if the humidity is too low.? The humidity fluctuates from around 25 - 30 percent. Is this okay? Everytime I put my broccoli microgreens in the light after the blackout dome they begin to fall over. I think this is because it is too dry. I initially thought it was because it was too cold. I increased the temperature from 70 degrees to 76 degrees.

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  3 роки тому

      Chad i think i answered this in a FB group for you but I would skip the blackout dome. You need to water them right when they go under lights. They're falling over because they are dehydrated. Your temp is fine. Humidity is a little low which is causing them to dry out a little fast. As you add more trays to your grow, it will increase the humidity, or you can use a humidifier in the meantime.

    Hey Danny great content. You said you keep your germination room at 70%. Did you mean 70 degrees? Would an screened porch (where nature controls the temperature) be sufficient for germination?

  • @texmoss

    Hey DG new subscriber here. Is outside air important for the C02 consumption of microgreens? Most a/c units are recycling air already in the room/home/building. So I imagine C02 isn't coming inside most people's grow areas unless they open a window or something.

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  3 місяці тому

      That air exchange typically happens naturally. Its nothing you typically have to worry about with the microgreens

      If its drying out your crops too fast, sure. Or you can grow more in your space which will also increase the humidity naturally.

    I live in Phx and growing out of my house. If I keep my house at 73 degree it will cost me an arm and leg. I am considering using a swamp cooler in a single room to keep it cooler but still may not be able to get it to 73 degrees. Any tips?

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  4 роки тому

      Oof, I feel your pain. That's actually a dope spot to be growing. My sister is moving out there in a month and I have been toying with the idea in my head of making a satellite farm out there. I hear there aren't really basements out there right? I'd think that a basement would be kept cooler because of the natural insulation via the earth. I would keep the small space where you grow air conditioned. It will cost money, yes, but it's worth it. Hopefully the room is well insulated. Use an efficient AC unit. Other than that, climate control is just part of the business and geographical location definitely does effect this, hence 120 degree Arizona days. Lucky for you, Pheonix is in the top 10 healthiest cities in the US so the demand will lead to sales which will allow you to pay your electricity bill! I know this isn't the greatest answer but I hope it helped at least a little bit :)

      I live in PHX too and I agree, I added two small humidifiers to reach the 50%. This summer our AC blew out with the months of over 110 F so I bought an AC that is mobile. I bought a new AC unit for the house, but at 73 F as you said I will go broke. Is there any way we can connect for a chat?

    • @DonnyGreens
      @DonnyGreens  3 роки тому

      Wow! That is a huge space! I think your germination space should be about 1/5 of the grow room, but that’s a rough estimate and everyone’s situation is unique. I still think in general this is a good rule of thumb, does this make sense?

When I got home from the farmers market today my sunflower seeds and another micro green head kind of laid down in the tray . It had been About 16 hours since I watered them last and I’m afraid that’s what happened... maybe they were thirsty.
