    If there is one thing lacking on UA-cam it's emu tutorials! I remember seeing the post on emus on acid. Thanks for sharing ja-ki 😉

    Thanks! This is just the kind of video I'm looking for right now. Just waiting for an e5000 ultra. I had an ESI-32 years ago, but Ii was in a different mindset at the time. Thanks Gregor Quendel for the link.

    Hey Ja Ki, Jahfunk here, I’m very late to the party but just want to point out that you could build on this by adding filter cutoff, resonance, pitch and volume to four more controllers to make this preset way more versatile 😉

    Hi ja-ki I recently got a emu E4X and wanted to ask you something when I try to save a sample on my E4X it only let's Me save to the internal hard drive .Is there something I'm missing when I try to save to disk . Thanks in advance for any advice you can share.

    one more question, is there a way to make the whole break fit the tempo of the song, I sampled the amen break at it's original speed & I was wondering if I could stretch the break to the same tempo as my ableton project, or do I just change the root note & hope for the best?

    my 4xt Ultra sounds like its degrading the sound… i have been trying to sample 808 sounds into it from Ableton… or an audio interface out of comp into sampler…. sampled a short 808 kick and it sounds dark and degraded in emu.
    there’s something wrong right?

    Hi Ja-ki, nice vid - i've been trying to recreate the envelope shaper and cord setup you made a few years back with Jah Funk for those of us still using EOS 3. I've managed to sort out most of it based on your settings here, however, in the EOA forum thread there were two images Jah Funk sent you which had the env and cord settings for his original env shaper. Is there any chance you could help me by either posting all the ENV and CORD settings, or the settings in Jah Funks images (the links can no longer be opened)? I've spent the last week trying to sort out how to control the release from my midi controller and not having any joy... Many thanks in advance!

      Sure, we can work it out together. Let me say that the settings Jahfunk used are somewhat placeholders (as are mine) you can and kind of have to adjust these to fit your individual taste. I modified the ENV shaper since then massively. Hit me up on Facebook. My name there is Ja Ki. I'm also part of the EMU user groups

    Is there a way to set the preset up similar to ableton's beat slicer but the sample plays until the end. I'm trying to chop the amen break up & I want it to play through smoothly when I re-arrange the break

    • @ja-kidnb6416
      @ja-kidnb6416  7 років тому

      yes that's possible. At least for letting the sample play to the end: just assign a cord like this: key+ --> keysustain --> 100% and your sample will play through (except for an envelope set up to shorten the sample

    its been almost 20 years and i'm still dreaming of owning one of these!! could you explain how would you incorporate this into a simple modern setup of just a computer and a usb audio interface? what extra stuff you would need etc.

      When I got my EMU it was the only piece of equipment. I got a Motu 828 and a few cables to sample and to playback (so 4 in total, symmetrical of course)
      Connected the Midi ports to the soundcard so I could play and automate the sampler from my sequencer.
      These days my computer only records MIDI, everything else is outboard (otb), so I got a desk the sampler is connected to and I sample via the AUX sends which enables the possibility to sample every signal that goes through the mixer.
      A harddrive and a card reader open up many more possibilities. I save whole songs as Multi banks on the hdd and load these according to the project I'm working on. I do quite a lot of sampling as I got 128MB in my machine which is more than enough. Also I can make a whole backup of my hdd and transfer it to my computer which also gets backuped so I don't lose a thing.
      Quite some time ago I chopped stuff on the computer and transfered the soundfiles via my card reader to the sampler but I prefer sampling directly so the samples get more of the samplers sound which I like.
      One of the biggest advantages of using these old samplers for me is the lacking need of using plugins to get a sound. I don't use plugins at all while writing songs and everything just sounds phat, massive, tight and shiny.
      Does this answer your question?

    Fantastic and inspirational tutorial! I get an e5000 at home but too much noise for me. It's time to invest in some modern solutions for it. New fan and sd card. Maybe a new key as it's not working 100% though I think I could buy some qwerty keyboard add on. Thanks!

    • @maccagrabme

      Apparently eremote tool allows you to use an existing pc keyboard via midi. Have you done the sd card update yet? Is it scsi2sd you are going to use?

    from the EOS manual "The point or points at which the sample is truncated is defined by the Zero Crossing Threshold parameter in the Master, Misc module." - so you should NOT be getting any 'clicking' if you have this parameter set correctly.

    • @ja-kidnb6416
      @ja-kidnb6416  4 роки тому

      there is more to this. First, it only cuts zero crossing points, secondly jumping from 0 db to for example -20 still produces a click. maybe back then my noisefloor might have been too high but just setting zero crossings two steps higher solved this for me anyway

    Have you thought about trying Chicken Systems translator for creating E-MU programs?

      @@ja-kidnb6416 You definitely create some nice sounds with your equipment!
      I think translator will just create a program for you and you can tweak the program in the E-MU afterwards. If that's even what you mean. I was just thinking that it might be easier to throw a REX file into Translator and have it make a program for you is all. If you're pushing the audio through an analog desk though then I understand why you'd rather not use do it that way.

      @@PleaseShutUpNowDude Yeah that's the point. I sample most of my sounds from vinyl or from my instruments so I have to go through the desk into the EMU. Going through the computer is just more tedious.

    Great video! Is there any chance of getting your envelope preset?

    • @ja-kidnb6416

      +jungaIized yes! go here: samplersonacid.com/legacy-emus-on-acid/viewtopic-f=9&t=4731.php.html
      It is attached to the first post. It is a very old version of it but I never upoaded a newer version. Some parameters need tweaking, for example the Controller taking care of the Attack portion of the sample is way to aggressively set (-100% but -30% is way more useful.) It is very straight forward, of course you can add your own cords aswell but I wrote it as simply as I could so users are free to modify it to their own needs

    As you are just sampling from your computers dac, I hope this if for demonstration only otherwise it defeats the purpose of sampling, which was done from LP back in the day, for that raw sound... computers sounds already been decimated god knows how many times. oversampling resampling etc ...

    • @ja-kidnb6416
      @ja-kidnb6416  7 років тому +2

      haha, no it definately doesn't defeat the purpose of sampling. Putting stuff in the sampler changes the game big time and I don't really care how others make music. I make it my way and if it includes sampling from my computer that's okay for me. The last few months my computer didn't produce a single sound though and I indeed sample a lot from vinyl (for example through some FX into the sampler)

    • @weeg91
      @weeg91 7 років тому +2

      I understand everyone has their way of doing things but people crave for time continuous synthesis today which the emu can provide, something far from anything software does today by default. ie floating point sandwiched between dubious linear phase converters on sound cards and interfaces. You would get rawer sound sampling from LP (which is usually studio recorded sound on tape both with infinite temporal resolution) or tape / mics directs, as opposed to sampling from your dac which plays samples thats been subjugated not only to the linear phase filters in the ADC that got it in the daw/PC in the first place, but also the cascaded oversampling linear phase filters present in the DAC you use to play those samples, in other words, the world isn't flat ;). My suggestion is only the purest approach, technically speaking because its subjected to less processing. People will always disagree and preach they cannot hear the difference but the main point is, theres less stages, if you know where to count them. ADC and dac aren't as transparent as they once were believe it not. The DAX in the emu are though, IIRC the ADC is oversampling - not a problem if you can bypass it with spdif and feed it with successive approximation instead into the fixed point domain of the emu for raw physics , but hey, what do i know.

      I'm a musician, not a technician, so what ever sounds good to me gets done. I sample a lot from vinyl though. A lot from my handyrecorder aswell. It's way easier to illustrate working with the sampler showing what most people have, like Ableton. In my opinion approaching any kind of arts in your above described way is a killer for inspiration.

    • @weeg91
      @weeg91 7 років тому

      Once you have it all set up it doesn't limit inspiration. I'm assured that conversion is the balls, in and out (but more in heh). The typical way today may ease creativity, but it's important to relate to our roots and how much more 'automatically good sounding' older methods were. Theres always that fine line between taste and hearing/physics. They need each other. I don't like metal but some of it 'sounds' well made. Sonar is tape emulation based by default - that is clever, subtle and helpful. How often have you wrested with software to match levels precisely (to two decimal places)? My way may be extreme, similar to that of boffins who design converters and software, less obvious is that I skip the maths, undo the boffins's approach and look from an electrical perspective. Speaker coil technology remains unchanged from when digital took over. What I fear is that coders are becoming more inter (less intra) disciplined, in the maths, measurements and too compartmentalized, with regards to how we like to hear - euphonic sound. Linear phase conversion, as prevalent as it is, hinders this ultimate goal. Digital production is still learning.
      I guess its analogous to think of it like blank and lined paper to draw. Linear phase is harder to tell by ear - mother nature states it should not be present.
