Woodturning a Baby Rattle for my Son - Padauk and Ebony

- In this video I, at last, turn a Baby Rattle for my son Matthew. This rattle is a personal design that I sketched out and selected wood species for. I decided to laminate a striped pattern using Padauk, Ebony and Idigbo, with a solid Ebony handle.
This rattle was turned in two parts to hollow the inside before a few small stones were placed inside to create the rattle sound.
To keep it safe for my son to use I sanded to a smooth 400 grit finish, oiled with Walnut oil and sealed with pure Carnauba Wax.
I am very pleased with how this rattle turned out, exactly to the design that I sketched before starting. My son really seems to like it.
I hope you have enjoyed watching me turn this Padauk and Ebony baby rattle. Thank you to all my Subscribers.

Nathan what an amazing rattle, what lucky babies with you as a Dad. The different colors of the wood always amazes me. Wow
Thank you Kobie, as always very much appreciated.
Beautiful rattle, Nathan. The contrast in the wood choice works well.
Billy
Thank you Billy, very pleased with the result.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this. A thing of beauty!
So, if an old man runs (well, hobbles) up to your stroller in the park and steals your baby's rattle, it'll probably be me. I know, I know... at 70, I should know better... but I want that rattle!
Thank you Ron, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you. haha
Excellent craftsmanship Nathan. I’m sure you son will love it .
Thank you Alan
Mathew is going to love the rattle, I just love watching you operate whatever tool your using, you make it look so easy. Great job buddy.
Thank you Stan, he's taken to it very well. I appreciate the compliment too, although there is still a long way for me to go.
HI Nathan, new subscriber. That was a beautiful project and I am looking forward to watching more videos. Thank you.
Richard Belch thank you Richard, happy to have you Subbed
Great job Nathan I'm sure there will be hours of fun for you little one
Thank you Barry
Nice rattle Nathan. I really like the color contrast. Great choice of woods. Although I don't care much for turning Padauk though. The color is fantastic but the whole shop turns orange when turning it. If you do another one, think about Bubinga. Nice shot of your son too. Good looking young man.
Glen Crandall thank you very much Glen. I know what you mean about Padauk, the orange dust is a nightmare and takes weeks to fully get rid of it but it always seems worth it when that first coat of finish brings out the colour. I’ve turned Bubinga a few times in the past and love its character too, but it is a little less forgiving in the turning process compared to Padauk.
Excellent result, although I was very pleased with the one I turned for my niece's daughter your choice of woods was spot on. Great job
Thank you Cliff
Beautiful Rattle Nathan! You really did a beautiful design here! Thanks for the mention!
Thank you Erik
Beautiful work. I am going to give it a try with some New Zealand native timbers and if it turns out even half as good as yours I will be pleased. I have just subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your work.

Happy new year Nathan, a beautiful project I'm sure it will be passed on through the family for many generations
Thank you Mike, that is the hope. Happy New Year to you too.
Beautiful result! You should save those ebony chips for a resin project.
Thank you Dave, they are actually in a bag at this moment
Beautiful Job mfg JOE
DrechselRentner Joe März thank you
Awesome job Nathan...beautiful piece of work, however, I think you wasted a lot of good ebony...I think I would have cut the piece in half..still would have had enough to work with for the handle.
Thank you. In hindsight you're probably right, however my purpose for leaving it that size was to ensure sufficient stability for finishing the rattle head when it was glued onto the end of the handle. I turned the two rattle halves while they were held in the pen jaws of my chuck and at times was concerned that they weren't secure enough. I didn't want to risk losing all the work I had already done up until the turning of the handle so opted to use the next size up jaws I have which is the standard 50mm set. I lost a bit more Ebony in shavings than what I really needed to, but I feel it was a worthy sacrifice to ensure the rattle finished how it did rather than it coming off the lathe and being damaged.
Well, wasted wood or not...it turned out beautifully Nathan. I certainly didn't intend any disrespect with regards to my comment ...I think the shavings will come in handy if you do any casting yourself...well done brother...cheers..
Oh not at all, I took no offence at your comment, it was a valid point given what you saw. I just wanted to explain the thought process I went through that influenced what I did, I could have mentioned in the video why I used an oversized blank. Casting resin is definitely something I want to start in the near future so the shavings have been saved, I have a nice red and black mix of Padauk and Ebony. Thank you again for your compliments.@@thebaby-boomerminer9934
