- Sam employs a simple method for turning a baby rattle for his new granddaughter. He simply turns a box with a mortise and tenon joint that he later glues together after adding rice. A fun project that requires no hollowing.

I made a rattle for my brothers grand daughter. I made a handle and hollowed out the rattle part. I put popcorn 🍿 in it for the rattle.

Boxes and baby rattles. Both fun and you combined both! Great video. I think it worth mentioning that there are consumer guidelines for choking hazards for baby toys. It is about 1 3/4" which is easy to test. It should not fit into a toilet paper tube. I use popcorn which is more readily available in my household than rice.

Cute little rattle Sam. I'm glad you addressed the safety of spalted wood and shellac. I've been making some captured ring baby rattles. I've been concerned about spalted wood since baby will likely gnaw on the wood. Also the finish. I've stuck with basic homemade polishing paste (mineral oil, beeswax and diatomaceous earth) since all the ingredients are safe. I wasn't sure about shellac. I have OBs shine juice. You mentioned shellac flakes and mineral oil. Is that shellac different than wood shellac?
Shellac is used to coat candies and other edibles; it is completely safe for consumption. Shellac flakes are what you dissolve to make finish shellac. They come in various grades for how refined they are. Garnet shellac is the least refined while the clear shellacs are the most highly refined and provide the clearest finish. One generally dissolves shellac flake in denatured alcohol (safe after the finish is dry, but one could use edible grain alcohol as well well if you are concerned about that) then strains it through cheesecloth. Woodworkers Supply (woodworker.com) has a good description of the flakes.
Why are you using spalted wood for a rattle for a baby that might suck or chew on it . Just my opinion. I turned an acorn box (lidded container). I did the job completely of the tool no sanding used beeswax as a finish
