- In this weeks video I break my 12" tool rest, and turn a beautiful maple and walnut baby rattle for my almost 4 month old Niece! Coated with food grade mineral oil and beeswax, baby approved =D

Wow!! That's was so cool to watch, and the result is stunning! Big RIP to your tool rest haha. Did the lathe sound different with the balls spinning around in there, or were they pretty quiet at that high of speed? How did you make sure that you wouldn't cut too deep and open up the rattle pocket?
Yeah I'm super happy with how this one turned out too. So excited to see her shaking it around when she is old enough!
I wasnt able to hear the balls at all when I was turning it. I think the centrifugal force just kept them sucked in place the whole time.
Yeah I was a little worried about cutting into the rattle pocket too, but I took a lot of measurements and drew a pretty detailed picture so I always knew right where the pockets were.

You'd have a lot more fun if you used some traditional chisels and learned how to cut the wood instead of scraping. Scraping gets tedious and boring, not to mention it leaves the wood rough and requires a lot more sanding. Just a suggestion. Nice end result though.
