I think this is about David Gilmours early friendship with Original PF member Syd Barrett and their youth in Cambridge . The house at start is Davids place of birth. But hey I could be wrong.
The ending is ridiculously amazing! When Gilmour says the endless river, forever and ever... Then you hear all the incredible sounds omg it really brings tears to my eyes and chills everywhere at the same time. Pink Floyd Forever And Ever!!!
I once had someone grip me around the throat and throw me against a wall, just for having this opinion. The sudden violence only served to increase my love for this absolute piece of art. Some people are too scared of change. Coming back to life has the two finest solo's I've ever heard. There, I said it. Grip my throat, I don't care
In addition, I would like to note that this particular couplet recalls the line of the early year's, Syd Barret's Pink Floyd single from 1967- See Emily Play: "...Float on a river, Forever and ever"
Actually its louder than words from ther 2014 album the endless river. But the album are reworked songs and parts of jamming sessions from the production of the division bell.
It is also a great friend, because it brings about all the new things too, it gives and takes, the key to joy is to embrace the happy moments and sad moments, take them as they come, and when you find yourself clinging to either one, try lo realize that it the clinging that is the cause for unnecessary suffering.
@@solinovo3219 That sounds good, but the reality is that as you grow older its easy for the bad to overtake the good, Sickness, death of family and friends, and the other "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" seem to hold sway.
It belongs how you look at it my friend. Time teach you, let you learn and let you apriciate. Let you miss, let you love and live. Without time we would be nothing. May its not our enemy, may its our best friend. Maybe both.
Time is neither good nor bad, it is simply there. Time also has nothing to do with the fact that the emotional state has changed. People like to put everything off on time instead of looking at themselves.
Pink Floyd are the only band whose music touches my soul. This song makes me cry. It makes you realise what a short time we have on this world. The bell ringing is like life ebbing away. This is my favourite Pink Floyd song.
Your comment made me think back to when I was a slacker pothead teenager and my older brother who always played a dad role in my life, and also a huge Floyd fan, would tell me all the time to listen to Time, trying to instill life lessons in me thru that song... Life is short, get off your ass, seize the day. Love high hopes, very similar message as Time. Floyd are geniuses and musically untouchable. Greetings from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🎄
@@comfortablynumb5597 thanks for your comment. I agree you don’t realise the real meaning of Time and High Hopes until you’re older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death has a real meaning in your mid 60’s. By the way, I love Canada and have been there often. I am Scottish and many Canadians have strong Scottish roots.
Not me, the tears came 30 years later, after life taught me the meaning of the song. Both perspectives see the grass as greener, the child looking forward the old fart looking back. That's the mystery of the song, it tells two stories simultaneously. A master class in song writing.
"The ringing of the division bell had begun" always struck me deep. That haunting piano work is unsettling. I don't mind the pauses, sometimes music just grabs u
I heard this song live in Mexico City for the first time and I swear I had an out of body experience and then started sobbing, no words can describe the beauty and melancholy of this masterpiece, and no one will ever come close to what this band has created over the years, PF Forever and Ever!!!!

You're right, it's all about crossing into full adulthood. When you were younger, everything was greener, brighter, and new. That's the same theme in Sorrow which is about refusing to grow up and being left behind.
Floyd live (Pulse) will blow your mind. one of the few bands where their live performances are better than their studio versions ( few exceptions ...great gig in the sky and the wall an example) ..dont forget to try out Dire Straits - sultans of swing (live alchemy version a must) and then 'Brothers in Arms' official vid, more classics.
The face on the statue they are carrying about 9:25 in the video is the image of Roger Waters, the former bass player and one of the original members of Pink Floyd. The Division Bell album was about the breakup of the original band, from the differences between Roger Waters and David Gilmour over creative issues.

This my friends is the last Floyd song with lyrics released to the public not High Hopes. Though, if you listen to the final lyrics of High Hopes they are "The Endless River... Forever and ever".
Thank you for such an honest and thoughtful review. After more than sixty years of listening to all genres of music, Pink Floyd still manages to touch parts of my soul that no other music can.
Yeah this is definitely one you have to see done live as well. It's from "The Division Bell" album and is the last album they toured with in 1994, which would come to be known as "Pulse"... the title of the live DVD and album that came out of that tour. Saw it in Chicago, USA back then and it was 3 hours of bliss. They also performed the entire Dark Side of the Moon during this!! As well as other classic Floyd material and that killer "Comfortably Numb' rendition.
I have only just discovered you two and I love your raw emotional reaction to this song, I was lucky enough to be at Earls Court to see this performed live in 1994, I should have gone to that concert with my brother but he sadly was diagnosed with cancer a month before and could not go, this song is and always has been in my heart since then and it warms me to see you as siblings loving this beautiful song together. It really fills my heart ❤️
Expecting the unexpected is the magic of Pink Floyd, they are always ready to surprise us. The music goes up and lets think that something intense is going to happen, and BAM, a soft piano melody surprises us.
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this song, it ALWAYS gives me goose bumps. Never again will we have a band like Pink Floyd, and blessed are we that know their music.
The last song , on the last studio album...chronicles their journey as a band to this final point. An absolutely perfect closure. No band, past, present, or most likely future captures the human condition and emotional range so perfectly. Gilmour's final solo on the lap steel guitar conveys the melancholy being felt at journey's end. If you don't goosebump and tear up at this incredible passage, your soul is dead.
Pink Floyd ... My favorite band since I was 10. Pink Floyd is all about regrets, our childhood, time, life, death, but also the acceptance of death. I realized that when I was around 16-yrs.
I'm here again....lol this is a great reaction! You guys NEED to listen to "Lost for Words" off The Division Bell album... David talks about his relationship with Roger.... It's really good..!!! Like EVERY other song on the album. "Wearing The Inside Out" is Amazing as well.
Try Dave Gilmour’s version of High Hopes at the Royal Albert Hall in 2007. It has the most beautiful extended acoustic outro. It brought me to tears when I first heard it. Amazing.
This song is the second last song with lyrics, the last one is on the endless river album released 2014 its called "louder than words" and its the last track on the album
This is a song that is a homage to Cambridge where the Floyd started out in 1965 . Its about friendship lost and found , the city of Cambridge , triumph and regrets . Ive heard this live at The Pulse concert and on the banks of the Cam river in Cambridge and it always makes me cry when i hear it . Ive been a life long fan since 1972 im 60 now . Thanks guys

I'm a 57 year old rocker and I really enjoy u guys reactions. Wish more of the new generation could know what you know about music played with real instruments and talent beyond belief. I'm from NC in the states and wish you good health and happiness. Please to meet you. lol Well done guys.
They are so cute! For a fellow old rocker (age 56, female) The fact that these two are close to the same age we were when it first came out and that they are having the same reaction we did. Just watching them makes me remember the greener grass! :)
Music that ironically transcends time and pink floyd really show how to bring you as a listener on an emotional journey and man I think everybody should be made listen to pink floyd
It was seriously magical live. The best concert I have seen to date. I was lucky enough to have seen them twice. It's great to see that Pink Floyd resonates with younger people.
You guys are awesome, Pink Floyd has been my favorite band since I was 10 in 1974. Wait for the end of the song for "Is that Charlie? Hello Charlie". Floyd always puts little things in their recordings.
I love your reactions dudes!!! This song is a masterpiece, Mr Gilmour knows how to transmit his feelings to his guitar!!! amazing!! but at the end, this beautiful song was made for all Pink Floyd members so, everything was amazing, drums, keyboards, bass, guitar, lyrics, amazing!! what a way to remember our childhood or friends from the past, even the nature of that past!!
The big vvhite statue, that is Syd Barrett . He passed in 2006. He took so much drugs in the 60-70s. He never came done from it. Shine on You crazy diamond
I just love your reactions, I fall short of understanding the meanings of records because I'm so wrapped up in the instruments. So it's great to hear your explanations to the lyrics. I just don't give thought to them so much. Thanks guys. 👍👍
Hi guys! I just found you, watched one of your Queen videos, was blown away with the way you “feel” music and had a big smile on my face caused by your accent (I live in Switzerland now but come from Serbia where everybody speaks English with this slightly Russian accent) The surprise was even greater when I checked out what you react to. Queen and Pink Floyd are of course among my favourite bands so it wasn’t a question anymore should I subscribe or not 😊❤️ Looking forward for your future reactions and I have a lot to catch up with.
One of the explanations that I’ve heard, is that The remaining members wanted or thought or anticipated this to be their best work. Thus the title “High Hopes”.
In our youth, so much is out there that is new, exciting, enjoyed with all your friends. But as we get the longevity we all desire, time too often brings us to be cynical, and most of the excitement is the result of the stressful times we did not anticipate. The friends who were everything in our youth, well... I suppose Rush said it best in "Nobody's Hero" : "As the tears went by, we dcrifted apart. When I heard he was gone, I felt a shadow cross my heart". It's just too damned true, isn't it ? GREAT JOB GUYS !!
That's Nick Maison while sitting at his trap set playing the gong with one hand through the entire song. It begins and ends with him hitting a Gong. And in a somewhat awkward position at that. Can't imagine the amount of concentration it would take. As a fanatical fan of theirs since 1968 this album release was sadden that never again the four would collaborate together on a album. I had picked up the CD set. But as always you have to listen the first time all the way through. And so the first time hearing it I was flying my private plane cross country with the headphones on what a surreal experience. When this album was released it was used at certain sound competitions due to the extreme Dynamics which help push sound systems to the Limit.
Your reaction to the song is the same way when I 1st heard the song so I'm right with you guys. And you know what it still does it to this day after so many years. And nothing has changed since the 1st time till now it's a beautiful thing
I truly love to watch you react to Pink Floyd, they are my favorite group..... ever and this song is my favorite...but you must listen to this song of the Live in Gdansk where there is another 4 min of David playing, it will leave you in a puddle of tears
They are great. David Gilmour has such talent as musician, and with his wife Polly Samson beautiful, memorable lyrics. I was 37 when this album came out, having perfect vision, my whole life, no glasses. Now that I am older, the fact is....you lose quality of vision. I am artist, musician, and vision is so important. The grass was greener...colors were brighter, all facts. Enjoy all the gifts of your youth. They are not permanent, sadly. That is a steel guitar in second half of song. David is brilliant. The lyrics says' "the endless river" which will be their next album. I remember forever the live concerts. I wish that Gilmour would do one last tour, personally, selfishly, and also for a next generation to experience. David Gilmour is such a generous man, he has written music for projects, and I learn more and more about his talents and his goodness. Check out a video written by and about " fractal geometry" from math experts and Gilmour does the music. Beautiful to watch and listen to.
You must listen too abd watch Com fortably numb you will love take this from a 73 year old man who has seen them live many times in the 60's to the 90's
I haven't read all of the comments to see if someone has already mentioned this or not. Apologies if someone has and I am repeating it. David Gilmour's wife, Polly Samson wrote the lyrics to High Hopes. She is a novelist/lyricist/poet/journalist. She is credited as a co-writer for High Hopes on the Division Bell album. I recall an interview that I watched with David Gilmour where he said that Polly wrote the lyrics and he made only minor contributions/recommendations.

Ohhhhhh, the strings and guitar reflecting one another in the last solo is just magical.
Thanks guys
The perfect illustration of why less is more - when it involves Pink Floyd, and especially Richard Wright and Dave Gilmour.
2.34 so beautiful ❤ pinkfloyd is exceptional... a sound that I have been listening to since the 80s and that I never get tired of... it is always almost enjoyable... musical happiness ✌️💥🎶 greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪👋
I have been listening to Pink Floyd for almost fifty years. You guys GET them. Keep on rocking and reacting. I am a new subscriber.
The huge church at the beginning is Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire and a lot of the video was shot in the grounds of St John's College, Cambridge.
@@Tk-zo5qv Alright gal. Very cool
This is not their last song with lyrics. Louder than words off the Endless River album is
Music that ironically transcends time and pink floyd really show how to bring you as a listener on an emotional journey and man I think everybody should be made listen to pink floyd
I am 70 and for decades a PF fan. It’s hard to say but........hear the cover High Hopes played by Nightwish. It’s even better!
It was seriously magical live. The best concert I have seen to date. I was lucky enough to have seen them twice. It's great to see that Pink Floyd resonates with younger people.
Pink Floyd is perfection.
Guys, the Pulse live version of High Hopes is also excellent with great visuals of the band and stage setting.
Man, that guitar solo.. no words to describe this. I think the reason e-guitar and violin touch us so much are because they sound like human voices.
You guys are awesome, Pink Floyd has been my favorite band since I was 10 in 1974. Wait for the end of the song for "Is that Charlie? Hello Charlie". Floyd always puts little things in their recordings.
You should re-listen to all these songs from the live Pulse album. IMO the best live performances of all time.
EPIC for all Time! Remember 1994...No Money no anything....Thanks Pink Floyd
So much emotion through the guitar.
Patrick's face at 1:33 ...... He absolutely loves what he's hearing...!
In our youth, so much is out there that is new, exciting, enjoyed with all your friends. But as we get the longevity we all desire, time too often brings us to be cynical, and most of the excitement is the result of the stressful times we did not anticipate. The friends who were everything in our youth, well... I suppose Rush said it best in "Nobody's Hero" :
"As the tears went by, we dcrifted apart.
Thank you Pink Floyd for this song🎼
The perfect song.. timeless
Thanks for the reaction, guys
The guitar solo on this song always touches my soul. Thank you peace ✌️
I worked on this tour in 1994. Division Bell Tour / 600 people to build the stage !
I recommend 'Coming back to life', you will love it for sure.
Best slide guitar ever....super talent...then again we all knew that, good stuff guys, peace.
Good week-end to you two 😎👍 next step , see them live to Pulse concert 1994 = best show , best stage , best guitar solos .. 🎤🎸🥁🎶
