I tried to do the materials for the ground and the grass, but the materials for the grass and the ground act as one. Meaning if I add that green texture for the grass, it does it to the ground, I have already checked the my render tab in the particles section, and the particle color is set to be the grass, so I'm not understanding why the ground turns green from the brown dirt material I gave it

The amount of particles Blender can handle varies by computer. Sounds like you need a better computer, considering the average is 2-3k particles per plane of grass. Also fwiw Blender does have temp autosaving.
Thats what I do! I just place a hires dirt/soil texture as the base texture for the ground plane, then make a seperate material node setup for the grass. Only do that if you are having mostly grass covering the ground. Its probably better to make a normal map for the soil with a little displacement.
I really need help. I made a hill from a plane and added grass to it. At first it was normal then something happened and the grass (hair) is growing only horizontally. Did I accidently change some settings and how to fix the direction to which the grass is growing?
You likely found the solution by now but you make sure in the particles settings under Cycles Hair settings and under the word thickness you will see the root slider. Just set it to 0.10 like he did in the video and it should remove the cone effect, at least that is what I found out while playing with the settings. (edit) might not have any effect on the animation side, did not catch that part

Maybe your normals are wrong, check them in object mode on left side, with object selected

to be honest. Rendering using the new technology(cycles) will be too much of overload. 500 value in render in children is a lot lol
