Why are some people "too old to play video games," but not too old to sit down and watch TV all day?
yeah I hate that stupid logic 😒 makes no sense. at least with games you are participating instead of just staring at the screen.
@@ernestohernandez9370 Exactly
I kow Thats what I told my dad when I was like 11. "He would say get off that damned game boy it will brainwash you and make you a stupid idiot!" I retorted, "get off that damned couch and stop watching sports all day you were injured you will never be a professional now!" I got in BIG BIG fat trouble. He was a pitcher and a catcher kneeled on his shoulder when he dove into home ad shattered it ruining his pitching arm. Also making his gold swing and his football throw weaker. He whines about it to this day every time I see him. My dad was endlessly tryig to get me into sports. He finally gave up when he realized I had a brith defect in my pituitary gland that caused the musclesi n my legs to not grow all the way and become so tight I had to walk on my tip toes because my heels wouldn't reach the floor. We didnt realize how bad it was until I was around 15 and I tried to play baseball turns out I should have been put in leg braces when I was 5. My Dr. had told my mom I would grow out of the tip toe walking because a lot of little kids do it. I'm 39 now and I still walk on my toes when I bother to talk at all because the pain my legs and lower back is unbearable.

@@DjJokerr games are toys, but nothing wrong with that
To me growing up is a process that doesn't end until you die. It doesn't suddenly happen once you turn 18 or whatever age is considered a legal adult where you live. To me growing up means learning whats right and wrong and how to be a better person not conform to what people think is an adult. Playing on a kids swingset oure obviously too big for is not something that should be considered normal but its okay to watch the occasional slongebob episode inbetween an episode of breaking bad or law and order suv.
I'm 34 and I've started dealing with this lately. My girlfriend's parents are of the opinion that gaming is for children and bums. Every time they come over I feel awkward having my systems visible in the living room. Glad I saw this today. I work hard and I wanna play games, so I'm gonna play games. It makes me happy so why not.

im 42 this month, i also had periods of not gaming as much when i was younger. i was still gaming but not as much, because i was going out exploring the world, having fun etc, and i find it comforting how other people have also had the same experiences in their lives also. me now, i probably spend more time gaming and doing techy stuff than i ever have done in the past, and im so much happier for it. im looking forward to my boy growing up and me showing him all the great stuff i grew up with and all the things that come out in the future. im totally going to support him every way i can to follow his dream in whatever he wants in life as i did myself
Me too will be gaming with my boy who is a baby right now 10 months old. Waiting for him to grow up.
I took my own hiatus from games a few times, but it wasn't from insecurity. I stopped for productivity. I focused on progressing in video games way more than I did with piano, physical fitness, and other responsibilities. Enjoy your gaming, but don't lose yourself in it.
I will never stop playing video games. I'm 30 and I still play Mario and Zelda. I don't care what people think. If you find joy in something, no matter what it is, don't let anyone sway you.
Amen!!!!
I'm 46 yrs old and will never stop playing games as well. While there was some truth about there being about stigmata towards gaming back then I personally never really cared nor did I really gave it that much thought.I remembered getting a PS1 back in the mid 90s as a treat himself for my 21st birthday kind of thing and even was seeing some girl whom was pretty smoking hot back then . She saw it and said oh cool , and then she asked me if it could play CDs? I showed her that it could and actually it in a funny way kind of got me lucky with her. So while yeah there was some kind of stigmata back then I feel like it really started to die when Sony and later Microsoft came on to the scene. The PS1 in a lot of ways was already aiming and was successfully achieving the adult market by then and am really think the contributions of having a built in CD player actually helped that along with DVDs for movies with the PS2.
My mother is 65 and she plays video games, even before I was born.

Back then, it was like video games are for nerds. It has gone on so long I can't even talk comfortably about games at video game conventions or in gaming discord groups. It feels unnatural to share my dearest hobby with anyone else.
I never did grow out of video games but I never did grow into a confident gamer either.
I know this is more of a me problem but I still wanted to share. And yes, I am trying to feel more confident about my past time activities.
Please support your kid's hobbies and interests so they can grow up confidently.
I've already told my fianceé that when we decide to have a kid, if they want to learn how to game (when they're old enough), I'll be teaching them. She has no problem with it.

I can't stand people who worry so much about what other people do with their lives

Rich puts his videogames in his closet because of societal pressure, brings 'em back out later.
Gamers: 1
Society: 0
Dude I’m 15 and I appreciate all eras of gaming and technology so don’t worry we’re not all ignorant
i remember ATARI console. but I started playing NES games and SNES. from playstation 1 to PC. Now I'm staying on PC gaming.
40 years old and still playing videogames till the day I die
Add 1. I'm 41 and absolutely love my PS4. I put in about an hour or two at night when my toddlers go to bed
The gaming industry is larger than movies and music combined. $177 billion annual sales. Yeah that's not just kids. I feel like it's really mainstream now no matter our age.
PREACH Papa Rich!! I seriously got into your channel when you spoke on this topic a while ago. Making statements like how it's bullshit people play facebook games like the farm bullshit and then knock on people playing a DS!! You got my support!!
In my 40's and been gaming since forever...Gaming is a hobby for those who love the growth of gaming which is so exciting the games and tech keeps getting better and better. Look @ VR, how it blows you away making one feel as if they are inside the game.
Henry Cavil is a gamer. That's the only statement you will ever need to win the argument.
Alot of gamers work out
It sound's like crazy talk, but you can go to the Gym and play Games on different days of the Week. You don't need to stick just with one of them. I know, mind blowing. Most People can't wrap their heads around it.
Vin Diesel plays Dungeons and Dragons on UA-cam! I know it's a tabletop but same idea.
Who is Henry Cavil?
@@Freakinger81 You can't be a true gamer unless you live in the basement and have a beer hat :)
Technically we are all wasting time doing anything, cause nobody even knows why we are here, alive in this reality at all.
But is it really wasting time if you're enjoying it?
Imo of course not!
Indeed. Our time on this planet is ultimately pointless filled with people trying to find purpose in a universe that wont even know they exist when it eventually turns to dust.
Do what you want people long as it's not illegal or hurting anyone. Dont let anyone tell you that the hobby you enjoy is for kids.

Thanks for that message, I was beginning to think I was the only one who was apprehensive about people knowing that I love gaming.
Kudos😉😊
As someone born in 1980 I completely relate to what you're saying. Being a "gamer" as a kid was not cool at all. Fortunately I never cared what anyone (except, ummm, my high school girlfriends) thought, so 1995 was all about FF3 and Chrono Trigger, 1996 was Earthbound, 1997 was Final Fantasy 7, etc. I always loved the Game Boy but would never be caught dead playing it in public. Funny how now, at almost 42, I have no problem using the Switch or Anbernic in public. I am glad that it doesn't carry the stigma that it once did.
26 years old rn, and gaming since the age of 3 and never stopping
I had a girl I was with for 2 years leave me because "gaming and comic books are for children and i need to grow up". Those 2 years I was with her she tried so hard to get me to stop them both until one day she realized that I'm never gonna change. She was an import car model and she always thought she was better than everyone anyways..so looking back at it now, her leaving me is probably one of the best things that ever happened to me.
She should watch invincible or 1997 berserk
gaming and comic books is for anyone at any age, if that's your interest - go for it
it's so ignorant of her so she rather have you going to bars doing drugs getting drunk instead of being home playing video games staying out of trouble 🙄?
You made a good choice! 👍🏾
@@o-Girly-x I agree, if it's a hobby you like, as long as you're not harming someone or yourself, why should you stop? for example in Japan people of all ages read comics, watch anime and play videogames, it is not seem as something bad, it is only the ones who become obsessed who are seem as bad. I think any obsession is bad for one's well being.
I love these videos, Rich. The original video you did on this change my life and helped me realize how ridiculous the guilt and shame of picking up a controller is. I have many stories of my own dating back to 7th grade. I missed out on many great games because of this, and now I'm finally rid of it. My biggest hurdle was gaming in public when I bought a Switch back in 2019, the first few times were the hardest, but I persisted, now free of the guilt and shame I've been carrying for so many years. Sure, I've been given a hard time by people around me while I play my Switch either during lunch break or on the bus (some guy punched me in the arm once) but I'm past it all now. I'm a proud gamer, and I intent to keep it that way.
I enjoyed this very much. I just found your channel, what a great first video to see. Thanks for sharing. Keep gaming bro!
My Dad made fun of my brother so much for gaming he stopped. That was the only thing me and my brother had in common and got along doing . After that we really grew apart and I haven't seen my brother in 6 years . I'm 40 years old now and really miss him. Iv never needed anyone to tell me who I was and still a Gamer !
Damn
Maybe call him up have him over for a bbq and some retro games. My brother and I are still really close and we game together online at least a couple times a week to just hangout and talk about life and laugh

Im going to be old, in a wheel chair and in my death bed at over 90 and they would have to pry the controller from my cold dead hands before I ever stop playing video games!

1978 here, Born in Jamaica but didn't start gaming until 1991 when I moved to Canada. Gaming is amazing and I WONT STOP.
Loved hearing this. Thanks for sharing. I stopped playing when my kids were little, but picked it up again since they started playing their own systems. They are now PC gamers, but I will always be a console gamer.
I'll never stop gaming, the industry will continue to grow and dominant other forms of media even more so why would I ever stop

exactly
Exactly mate.
Ooowh, im gonna use that!

The Anti Keem tweet. I love it.
I guess times changed by the late '90s, when I was in high school nearly everyone was gaming to some extent. The jacks and popular guys were into sports and racing games, and the nerds were in to PC games or JRPGs, and kind of every one was into action/shooter and fighting games to some degree.
Appreciate this video and you sharing 💯💯💯 u definitely helped me to start my own channel
I'm so glad gaming has not only become socially acceptable, but honestly encouraged. That's my kind of world
To be honest I kinda miss the old days when gamers got shamed by society. It was the rebellious thing to do, AND the internet was so much more unregulated (aka free). Now gaming is so mainstream.
Everybody is still a bunch of closet gamers in my area. I am constantly getting shamed for talking about videogames.
@@jRex918 Yeah my boss is like this. If you even mention you play video games occasionally he lumps you in the "loser" category as if you don't have a life and just sit around shoving food down your gullet.

This weird because im a bit older than Rich and all my friends had gaming systems growing up. We all hung out, hooked up with girls, got on the party scene and did all that and we all still gamed. We`d get some beer and liquor and play halo at each others houses. Good times. Rich had some lame friends.
I guess it just depends on where u were raised. I was born after u guys and my experience is similar to rich’s. Gaming was frowned upon, i had a few friends that gamed but we wouldnt DARE bring it up when we went out to functions with other people like the jocks and if u wanted to get a girl to go out with u, you had better not bring it up. I think it was more of a regional thing. I grew up in the “bible belt” so everything was religion, religion, religion, hard work, hard work, cant be sitting in front of a tv wasting your life away.
@@MIGGYME1 I was in the northeast and everyone i knew played video games. The only people we heard the stuff Rich heard was from older people but never people my age. Me and my friends were the popular kids in school played sports hung out did all that and played videogames. I never realized i had it so good. i honestly thought this was normal.
EXACTLY! I said samething with all embraced it from day one even in 20s just nonstop
I’m 50 still playing on my PS4 and Nintendo switch lite 😂

66 almost 67 years old I"ve been gaming since pong. I have the series x and PS 5 a gaming pc and quest 2 plus my switch and raspberry pi and have a PSVita that will be here in 2 days. I love to game and got my friends involved from work in some shooting games in the 90's. I even got my momand dad stuck on playing the Atari they both loved frogger and some others I can't remember.
My advice is enjoy what you like to do because life is short and can be over at any time. Piss on what anyone else thinks and have fun.
I love your show, and this episode reminds me so much of my childhood.
First off, not that much younger than you. Born in 85. I dealt with the same stigma: video games were something you did as a kid. My parents were tolerant (they never denied me games when I earned them), but there was always that eye roll, like "Oh my God, he wants a game".
In school, gaming was looked at like something you did on the sly. Granted, I was in a group of friends that were gamers (we all did Pokémon battles on the bus to and from school), and one class during my senior year was all about playing Unreal Tournament every class (not officially, but for reasons...). But it still felt like it wasn't something you advertised.
When I got married, I brought all my games with me. When we needed money, I always sold my games first. Figured they're not doing anything but taking up space, so why bother? Biggest regrets of my life, as later on, I caught AVGN on UA-cam and it reignited my love of video games.
Since then, I've been collecting games, playing them...even started my own channel on YT. And it amazes me that, as legit as gaming has become as far as a medium for storytelling, my parents especially STILL sound disgusted when they mention video games, like it's some kind of disease.
Anyway, just wanted to share my experience with you and your viewers. Keep up the amazing work you do!
