I love the little details and dialogue in this demo. Wounded Marine sees a Pelican offloading a team of ODSTs, followed by a near-mythical supersoldier: "Guess the brass do give a shit."
That's actually the only time the word shit is ever said in a halo game.
Havok 2 engine was heavily promoted at the time for good reason. Still outperforms newer efforts imo. 🤜🤛
Insane to think that this Halo 2 demo's engine was completely thrown away after e3
Technological graphics limitation sucks held them back a lot.... if they had the spirit and creativeness and full control without a deadline.. this game would of been a masterpiece. Sadly they all moved onto other projects or just retired at this point since bungee split up a decade ago

Wow, what a blast from the past. I was there at E3 in 2003 as part of the gaming press and remember having to wait in line for about two hours to see this trailer in the small theater they set up in the exhibition hall. I wasn't really into FPS games but the original HALO made me a believer. I still remember the "oohs" and "aahs" from the audience, especially when Master Chief started duel-wielding - the fans went nuts for that.
And then the invasion of Iraq 2003 happened when this trailer was released....
Bungie's admitted to Eurogamer that the Halo 2 E3 2003 presentation was a fanciful snapshot of a game that could never be recreated on Xbox hardware.
"The graphics engine that we showed at E3 2003, driving around the Earth city... That entire graphics engine had to be thrown away, because you could never ship a game on the Xbox with it," said Chris Butcher, engineering lead on Halo 2.
"Through putting ourselves through hell, we were able to do a five-minute demo of it, but after we came back from E3 we had to admit that this graphics engine was never going to work - it was never going to support the kind of environments that are really important for a Halo game."
"So we literally scrapped the entire graphics engine and started from scratch."
Imagine if they somehow tied this content in with the anniversary edition. Obviously to somehow make it fit and all but would have been awesome :)

That way its less a reimagining and more of a recreation of the halo 1.5 build that is this demo.
The city in the real game was such a disappointment compared to this. The semi-auto Battle Rifle is better too, has a beefier sound effect, and is a DMR.
One of the reasons why I love ODST, has that kind of art style
I kinda wish we got that version too. I’ve seen one mod where someone got it to fire semi auto like the DMR. I think they also nodded the DMR in Reach to burst fire and I kinda like the burst for that better.
The reason for halo 2’s final product was because they basically scrapped this version of the game and started anew and they were rushed to put the game out, thus the reasoning for the levels making it feel like its not as open and non linear like halo combat evolved because they had time and had the resources to make it feel open world-ish whereas halo 2 they didn’t have luxury of time and they had to cut a shit load of things in order to get us this game.

They're making it.
Looks like you’re getting your wish
The AI driving in the H2 demo looks better than what we got in H3 & H4 combined lmfao!
it was probably scripted for the presentation.
It's definitely scripted, but sometimes developers have to scrap content that worked better in previous iterations due to technicalities. For example, Red Faction Guerilla's destruction did not carry over to future games because the system was incredibly complex to make and was not compatible with newer engines that future games used.
Yeah, It's scripted. Because it's a demo they just follow a way point scripted path since it's only a demo. AI driving still has a way to go even in today's games, but it's definitely improving. I remember playing Halo 2 and they'd crash non stop, lol.
Man this is soo cool to see even if it was all smoke and mirrors,
Theres alot of stuff in this demo that you see in later games
That AA cannon has the same sound effect of the AAgun in 3
The highway part kinda reminds me of the last driving section in odst more than the tunnels in 2
I consider the single shot BR the predecessor to the DMR,
Wish we coulda fought a few brutes early in halo 2.
Metropolis and Outskirts reuse as much as possible aside the brutes but this version of new mombasa is truly a futuristic megacity.
The skyscrapers also have greater resemblance to their ODST counterparts
It’s funny, eh. This trailer looks amazing. But what we got in the actual game doesn’t look as epic. Halo 2 is a good game but it’s also disappointing we didn’t get this.

It’s 2020 and I still get hyped watching this, so nostalgic
Compared to the final version this felt more like a warzone with UNSC Marines carrying their wounded and dead back from combat which is something that happens in real life because I've seen footage of urban fighting which men were being carried back on stretchers injured or killed.
Can't wait to see this playable in the MCC
It's crazy to think this will soon be playable in mcc. Modders will probably be able to fit into the campaign directly too.
This trailer should have been remastered for Halo 2 Anniversary.
Can’t believe they got rid of that 3 hit melee combo!
I was 13 in the year 2003 when the Halo 2 demo was played at E3 that year. Graphics and presentation were absolutely mind blowing. played the shit out of Combat Evolved on original Xbox literally countless hours well over 300 hours.... Saw the presentation for this on quicktime on the school computers (This is pre-2005 so no youtube back then) and all us kids were perplexed at what we were seeing. That level of detail was just impossible to achieve but somehow Bungie managed to do it. November 2004 finally roles around and Halo 2 hits the shelves. I get my copy and literally felt like all my christmases had come at once. god the memories!

I wonder how different Halo 2 would have been if the developers weren’t on a time limit and had a more powerful console to work with
Microsoft could've released this as a launch title for the Xbox 360 since that console came out in 2005. We could've had this by then.
What we got was a different way..
Cody Gore and your point?
Amazing exercise in 3D animation, too bad this was all made up for E3 and not actually Halo 2. Luckily Halo 2 turned out fine anyway.
That's completely false, even sketch played the demo in a dev kit they had.
This is a playable demo. The reason it looks so scripted is because it was extremely unstable, and even a slight deviation from the predetermined path would cause the whole thing to crash. The engine this demo is running on was scrapped because if its instability.
@@russellbrown6888 if by crash, they mean it won't load the next part of the demo if they deviated, then yes that's correct. But the Demo is fairly stable on the dev kit and didn't crash once. They deviated plenty and even had the ability to reload last checkpoint seamlessly.
We're just being lied to so they won't include the Demo. I mean, even if they were honest we still aren't getting the Demo.
Came here to appreciate the semi-auto BR. Glad I'm not alone on this one. IMO, all they needed to do was increase the recoil a bit (no bloom) so it wouldn't be too easy to use in multiplayer. Otherwise, this was the best version of this gun, and we never got to use it. Lame that the ending of the trailer is cut off.

@@maybetomorrownewmaker I blame gaming becoming more mainstream.
Most developers/publishers seem to aim for the quick buck. this is indicated by games releasing like a buggy mess and having little to no free after-care. Once the title is out there, it's out there. Pre-order shite seems to ramp up every next generation of games as well. With some games offering pre-order bundles upwards of 200 bucks. Don't forget they all include in-game bonusses as well, rather than just some nifty collectors things. In fact, there are more and more games that offer pre-order bonusses that are exclusively digital. (Nice and cheap for them to sell air).
And all the dude-bros that have 2 hours a week to play games just splash money on these shit titles anyway. They play some random AAA copy-paste for a good week before they are tired of it and move to the next pre-order.
That's why many indie developers still produce good games. They aren't primarily in it for the buck, but still for the passion. Big game industries are run like a for-profit company and they do literally everything to squeeze out maximum profits.

Who's here after Halo Infinite gameplay reveal?
To my understanding, This demo couldn’t not actually run on an actual Xbox. Bungie just hoped they could get it to run by launch. However, the graphics engine couldn’t run on an Xbox. They actually had objects delete once the player moved passed them to keep the Frame rate up. 343 considered remaking the level for MMC (I guess as a bonus level) but they realized that a lot of it was scripted. Like the level was open, but was designed to be taken by one path. On top of that, many scenes like the ghost hijack was completely scripted. Ultimately Bungie scrapped a lot of Halo 2 early build and ended up making the game we know it as in 1 year
Should upload this with the audience reactions in there
This game was way ahead of its time in terms of gunplay, AI, graphics, and physics.
It really wasn’t. Not Halo 2 at least.
