I'm Hayden Hillier-Smith, on this channel I will break down what makes good editing...pulling back the curtain on how editors make the choices to keep YOU, THE AUDIENCE engaged. This includes showcasing the creative choices I have made.
And exploring the editorial process for other UA-cam channels in how they have optimised their content. I’m even going to take you through my journey where I experiment on how I can become a better editor and learn through my experiences.
Whatever it is that I do on this channel, I hope you can learn something and discover your own ability on being a content creator yourself.

Logan Paul: "How's my punch?"
Hillier Smith: "Its too cartoony"
😂😂
Lmao
This is exactly what Editors need, we know how to use the editing programs, but in the end, you're trying to tell a story, and you need to know how to emphasize and tell the story perfectly. Most people focus on the "epic" video FX and crazy transitions, but negate the basics of storytelling. Your channel is a goldmine, and it's for free. Incredible. Thank you.
But he is not editing here most of the time he is doing sound design
This was really entertaining to watch
Sup Brandon
Yeah really puts a different perspective on the importance of sound in videos
oh you here too? 😳
Because this video is based on the heros Journey.
...Brilliant example of genius editing
He is one of the best out there
It would be great to see a video detailing all of the production resources you use e.g.
-Epidemic sounds
-Transition Packs
-Books
-Podcasts
Bully: Punches kid
Kid: ITS TOO CARTOONY! TRY AGAIN!
Kid: (bites celery)
Bully:OW!
Kid: watch and learn
The cartoon jokes are so funny 😂
“Stay curious” I’m always curious what you are doing 👀 regardless of my different niche. Never know what comes handy for the next project...
The "squelching" sound on the last two punches in their version really got me, regardless this was an awesome tut, and loved the build up!
One video a week isn't enough we want more
This is incredible
Bro why did nobody respond to this comment lol. Hello Ali! I started my UA-cam channel cause of you :)
That was very detailed, once again a terrific video! Here's my thought: ''Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.'' I would be inquisitive to understand the cuts, speeds and choices for the Rocky 1 training scene.
A rocky in-depth review would be amazing
This was SO interesting to watch you discovering HOW TO do sound design. You have a nice sense of how it should sound. I genuinely think they used more layers. On punches I actually use more layers , usually going for at least 3: one for low/sub frequencies ( a big thumb so it feels pretty heavy), one for middles (the punch sound that you have) and one for highs (probably the bone crack or blood splat or both XD). And as you discovered we're trying to not layer perfectly, this way you have more impact on the punches. What you did definitely lack of some spatialization. It's all Raw sounds. you would want to use some (convolution ) reverb so the sound would not be up front, but coming from the characters. There's a lot of processing to get the amazing sound they got for the trailer . You made me willing to take this kind of exercise on my spare time! Enjoy your sound journey :)
This video was brilliant! They way you break down everything sequence by sequence a true genius 🙌
I love you, man. You are one of the most genuine persons in youtube.... keep doing great sh*t. Love you, bro.
Love your content man!! Would love to see who you think are some of the other great editors on UA-cam!
Mate, I’m exploring video editing and this whole UA-cam thing. Thank you for showing your genius, and an example of how you have learned your craft and pushing your knowledge, creativity & curiosity. I followed what you were trying to do and get it but need to work on my technical skills. Cheers Matt
This kind of content is great! It's really helpful to watch someone else's process because you see loads of small techniques that you might not have thought about before. Especially things like using the thunder to help show a character moment. Thanks for your content it would be great to see move stuff like this 👍
Hey, a music producer here, comparing ur sounds with the original trailer sounds, i can hear that the original had a significant amount of bass in each punch, also i feel like the original sounds were compressed in a way that the dynamics of the sounds were much more punchy and sharper than urs! Great video btw
Hi Hillier, I recently discovered your channel and absolutely love your content, thank you so much for sharing your process! I used to work as a voice actor in Hong Kong where we dubbed several Jackie Chan & Toho Godzillas into English and I can tell you that dubbing fight scenes was never easy! We always had to teach new dubbers not to make too much noise when their character was being hit - it takes energy to make those 'being hit' sounds and it never sounded natural in the final mix when the character was bloodied and battered that he/she would have enough energy left for that. We also had to train them to make more breathing noises because for some reason they thought the breathing noises would ruin the take where as it only makes the character come to life.
Anyway - please keep your process videos coming - I'm learning so much from you!!
Hayden!!! CONGRATU-FUCKING-LATIONS ON 100 THOUSAND SUBSCRIBERS! IM SO PROUD OF YOU AND HOW FAR YOU'VE COME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Love this content. This makes me feel better about my process and the self-doubt. Congrats on the well-deserved Steamy!
I bloody love this!!! Learning as you’re learning. Brilliant!
I spent a month working on a Batman video. I still see the edit page and the same scenes over and over again when I sleep!
i’ve been editing for about 3 years, and you continue to help me and learn new things! thank you!
He is very smart with editing
I'm loving your vids. Really helping me out a lot
Hey man !!!
Congratulations that you won editing award
And i am double happy that i know about your chanel and learning from you 😁😁
Great work man. I love the way you think with your edits. A lot to learn from you.
A few months back, when I realized I could do the sound effects myself, it opened an universe of possibilities. Great video 💪
ignoring the editing of the trailer, the editing of this video alone is amazing. the way you play the different sound effects, zoom in on the name, add it to the scene and test it, is so engaging. truly one of a kind man
Absolutely loved this video! Being a huge fan of of using sound design in my own work, FCP and of course, Batman....this was a damn treat!
Thank you for the content, I've gone through a few videos and learned some things. Also your version is very good👍🏿. If I can think of any scenes to edit I'll let you know
I tapped this with the anticipation of watching the first few seconds and adding to my “watch later” ... but then couldn’t look away. This was a perfect example of practicing what you preach. I couldn’t look away!
I’m not a video editor but your videos keep me inspired to learn more and work hard at what I do, well done mate! Keep it up, love the content!
love this channel..great work man..thx
Dude this was an editing adventure! Never seen anything like this. Entertaining editing videos
Another beauty Hayden! Great job!
Your fire as F*** 🔥
Yeah, I still can't believe he is doing this for free
For something that could easily be tedious, you really made the edit process amusing to watch!! I think this is going to become a REALLY popular series because you can go over your thought process as you edit and it’s just got a strong watch to end factor!!! Perhaps you could try making a general video on foley sounds or even recreate sound effects from something like Star Wars?
Yeah you did it man!!
Congrats!!❤️
I hope you get 100k by Christmas! just wanted to say merry Christmas to you and your family, sending you love from Vancouver Canada! honestly love the passion you have for editing, it inspires me so much!!
I'm hoping for 100K by Christmas too! Thank you for your love, I love love, it's the best!
Love all your content!!
This is great! I recently did a naked and afraid spoof after paying attention to their edit. Took a lot of work just to scratch the surface. Lot of respect for reality show editors now
That was quite entertaining and something I'd love to see more of it. Sound design to me is the most exciting part of the editing process. Let's do this again, pls!
Yours came out great ! Enjoyed watching you edit it !
I've never been so entertained in watching ones editing process. I love the humour elements in it haha
Sick edit for sound design ! I think the only last thing i would've add is one more delayed punch (even the bone sound) when we see the gang's reaction just to emphasize what the gang see's wich is Batman making that choice again to keep going. It is pretty brutal!
Yours was the best ! Great advice 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿.
Amazing video as always! One of the best parts of doing stuff like this is making some of the sounds by yourself :D I think that thunder sound in your sequence should be more subtle, but the rest is "*muah* uuuh"
It was 1000x times better than the orginal one!
Keep going brother! :D near to 100k le'ts do it!
And make a tutorial from where you get that sfx, it will be really helpful for us!
congrats on 100k and the award!
Love your videos...keep on creating 🌱
I really enjoyed your addition of the Thunder!
Hey man, I recently saw your 5 editing mistakes UA-camrs make. After seeing this video, you solidified me as a subscriber. Good luck on the channel!
Damn that’s so sick ma guy🔥 keep at it
Do more of these ! that was way too good..
Thank you for making this video
Learned a lot from it
thiss genius editing! thanks
Love this stuff. So helpful!
Dude that was incredible
Nice editing. Learned a lot.
Sponsors will came. Be patient Hayden. I'm pretty sure. Amazing results! Greetings from Spain!
Love your work an the videos on this channel! 😍
What sound design library do you use? I'm really curious!
I can't get enough of your videos man. The editing of them is soooooooooo captivating. Plus anyone who's a fan of the Batz is cool w/ me.
+1 like, +1 subscriber
This video is underrated.
Wow it's crazy how good you are great job 👏
ohhhhhh hillier, great video man as always!
Keep making editing tutorials! You have so much knowledge to share. You're a brilliant story teller and a skilled editor; keep up the great content. 😃
You forgot to add the background rain sound. When batman is far away the sounds should be slightly lower then gradually louder as the characters come closer to the camera. Good tutorial man!
*Pitch Shift* is what you were looking for -> maybe detune more than one semitone and keep it at like 50-70% in the mix .. also I’d say lower the volume of the grunts, and play with reverb (on individual tracks or overall) for ambiance. Just my ✌🏽 cents 😎
the magic of sound!
The Indiana Jones punches are award winning. And I don't know where to find it but I seen video on how they did them, a foley artist explained what is involved. But what stuck with me was how he explained "you tell a story with sound so a punch has a whoosh then a hit that breaks bones, a fist hitting skin, a pain that makes you moan, and even if you don't hear all the sounds your subconscious does." I'm paraphrasing.
It sounded incredible!!
Why is this so satisfying! Keep them coming! As far as my thoughts I think if you would have lowered your grunt volume it would have improved.
This is soooooo interesting man!
The cloth sound effect is great. It builds anticipation, makes the individual sounds more cohesive and adds a layer of realism to the sound design
I’m so glad you made a channel
Informative and enjoyable as always 👌🏽
Dude this is awesome. I wanna learn sound design from you. Where did you learn and how do I learn more. I'm using Resolve, but I don't know how to push things in and out of my timeline like that... Lots to learn
Loved this sound design breakdown. Thanks for this!
You're welcome, I love that I share my experiences and people enjoy it!
I have no idea what I’m doing with my edits. You’re helping me change that. Thank you.
That’s a great experiment 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Yoooo your getting close to 100k subs I thought you were approaching like 30k or so but congrats
I'm so close! @peter mckinnon gave me a massive boost!
I enjoyed this content ! Keep it up
you should make a video on your editing setup, like what specs and monitor configurations u recommend for productivity and workflow
Great video as always 😁
Love your videos! I'm learning so much...The nicest thing was when before you said "I think there is something missing here" I thought the same before u said haha The grunts tho, I would have lowered down the volume a lil bit (since you didn't know what to do)... Love every minute of it! Ps: where do we buy these packs of sound effects?
It'd be so sick if you re-edited the joker scene where he's preparing for the tv show and he murders his friend that visits him
oh god that would be too much fun
That would be good
if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
huh?
@@theweirdonesleft6200 If there's nothing to fix, don't do it*
6:50 killed bro 😂 GREAT video
Good stuff. I just made a short about a snake that is loaded with sound fx. It was so fun to make and enhanced the video experience.
you are so good at this
I found your videos so entertaining that I'm literally re-watching them. Would really love to see you make a video where you try creating a Hollywood trailer
Without having insider knowledge, my guess is not that the pros are using less sounds, but rather they have a more intense mixing process than shown here. They are not only dialing in the gain for each sound, but using EQ's and compressors to emphasize different sounds. Perhaps you've done that and we're just not seeing it on screen. Thanks for the video!
That celery break got me
fun sound design. i'd be interested to watch you in a foley studio and this is awesome XD nice end
Congrats for the Streamy, that well deserved!
Great job! One thing to consider is some of the sounds in the original trailer may actually include some authentic sounds from on-set. Obviously enhanced with software in post but in this situation, I think (untrained opinion) the natural sounds combined with some effects and enhancements, will sound better than purely digital sound effects. Yours certainly passes to where I don't think anyone would know the difference - but when you put them side by side, I agree the original are better. Thanks for sharing!
The punches and whooshes sounded top notch for me 👏 I use PP but pitch shifting works decent there...I don't know a ton about mixing and audio, but I like to play with stock SFX to make them a bit more my own...
Btw the hardest part of SFX is to know what a certain sound is called (especially as not a native english speaker 😀)
Where do you purchase those kicking and punching sound effects from? I thought it was included with the free FCPX sound effects but I cant find them anywhere.
