I react to Dude Perfect's "Dude Perfect Corn Maze | Nerf Battle" and give my professional experience to analyse and break down why this video is so good, it's so good guys.
I'm Hayden Hillier-Smith, on this channel I will break down what makes good editing...pulling back the curtain on how editors make the choices to keep YOU, THE AUDIENCE engaged. This includes showcasing the creative choices I have made.
And exploring the editorial process for other UA-cam channels in how they have optimised their content. I’m even going to take you through my journey where I experiment on how I can become a better editor and learn through my experiences.
Whatever it is that I do on this channel, I hope you can learn something and discover your own ability on being a content creator yourself. - Розваги

Hey! Turns out they had drones that were automatically tracking them, thank you for the correction!
Give the automatic tracking drones a raise?
They do automatically track, but from the distances they were at, the tracking loses people pretty easily, so you weren't entirely wrong. I also would have been tempted (as a drone operator myself) to just get cool shots like you had said rather than focusing on establishing shots. Good stuff Hillier, maybe one day I'll get to your level!
You should react to a morgz video
We did use the Skydio drones (auto tracking) for some coverage but the main drone shots used in the video were remotely controlled by us!
Thanks for all the support! - DPEditors
Oh hahaha yes mine does this too, it’s called active track. Either way though they did awesome
Hey Hillier thanks for these videos, you are super enjoyable to watch. And the gems you drop are from out of this world
frictionless editing
OH! I LOVE that phrase, "Frictionless editing". I'm gonna use that in the future.

@@HillierSmith Honestly, I just like the idea of you saying that in a video lol. I feel like it would fit with your accent so flawlessly.
Kody Ko liked that
The only content creator I sit through premiere countdowns for.
As soon as I saw premiere I clicked so fast haha
Lucky for us, Premieres are changing soon and we get to choose themes, and also jump straight to them from live streams.
@@GarrettMusic1 every time haha
Ahhhh man you’re not the only one 😂😂
About the Logo delay: A years-long Dude Perfect viewer, I've come to expect the title card. Its not bad, just part of Dude Perfect's brand. Their fanbase is massive and hangs on all of their videos. I don't expect they loose any die-hard viewers with that. Also, because DP's videos are so energetic and 'bouncy', the title card can be interpreted as the final audience "breath" before the video. The calm before the storm, the "buckle up" moment, the "hold on to your hats."
could this be why there losing some UA-cam recommendation push? like only viewers watching and no one new
I agree
@@AntsManitoba Good point, they do grow though, and have an ungodly large amount of subscribers, topping 50 million or something like that.
yes i thought the same just coulden't find words for it
well said
The 8 second logo is perfect for me as a viewer. Ive watched them for years and hearing Tyler say “Dude Perfect” in the intro is music to my ears!
Its been branded very well
I thought it was the editor who says it, no?
Honestly the most useful editing tutorial videos I’ve ever watched + I love the British accent ❤️
That’s so true !
I am so grateful for hayden and his content, has helped so much
british accents :(
Coz you're both gays
啊哈,酷~~~
The 8 second logo for me is perfect. In that 8 seconds i relaxed and i changed how i sat in my chair without worring of missing something on the screen because i know its the logo i have seen many times
Personally, I feel that the intro is very original and gives us the dude perfect vibe! Which makes us feel at home in a sense and give us abit of satisfaction when we watch the video!
Yes the at home feeling describes it perfectly
I feel like there's no difference by adding or not adding logo,
But they have to,because that 8 second logo is the signature of their video,
You don't feel the importance of logo because you're watching their video for the first time but it breaks the heart of the fans who have been following then from long time
That is true, most of their audience are long time fans
Anyone have some good book recommendations to dive in deeper into editing for better audience retention/for UA-cam?
In The Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch taught me a lot!
I'm currently reading "The Art of the Cut" by Steve Hullfish and it's incredibly insightful.
Your editing has changed my videos Hayden! Thank you!
@@HillierSmith your so up in my trust that i didnt even check whats the book about and bought it instantly,
only after i ordered i checked the discription
@@austinflowers3382 What is your channel? I would like to see what some other people who get tips from Hayden come up with in their editing.
LOL, on three to four of your videos I thought to myself "These are packed with useful info, I am gonna add this to a specific playlist", then realized that every single video you put out is a gem, so it wasn't necessary, as all I need to do is remember your channel name. One of the best channels on YT, by far. Keep up the good work man.
Also, no-go on the 8 second logo that you were asking about in the video. Honestly, no intro, or an intro that is 1-3 seconds is ideal. You want them to see who you are, and remember it, but not be bogged down by the time it takes to deliver that information.
I genuinely enjoy these videos so much because even tho I'm not even close to being on a level near of yours. I truly love everything that goes on behind the editing and storytelling in the process of creating a youtube video and I know one day in the future ill be able to actually sit down in a room with you and nerd out about all these things. keep going with these videos they are important in so many ways that you wouldn't know
Dude, im loving your videos! I am learning a lot to make my youtube videos better. Thank you!
Just found your channel today and loving it whilst learning so much, so thank you!
I actually like the 8 second logo, for me it built more excitement by allowing me to reflect on what I've already seen, and start to think about what is to come, which knowing Dude Perfect, will be awesome.
Love your vids man! Its helping me a lot!
I love how he keeps calling them this guy, that guy, those twins
Yeah it’s hilarious 😂😂
Tall Guy, Beard, Twins, Purple Hoser!
dude this breakdown was great I learn so much from your vids!
Before I found you, I didn’t now that I’m interested in that kind of stuff. Now I love it
Your videos are so good! They are helping me getting better in editing so please continue with this!
Thank you so much Hillier I watched your whole channel today. one of the only people ive put the bell on for.... Literally THE editing god
I love hearing how you analyze each shot, hoping I can learn from this. Thanks
I ABSOLUTELY love that you have this UA-cam Channel, Hayden!!! Thank you.
As usual so insightful. Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favourites.
Learning so much here, thank you for making these videos!
You’ve giving me so many “cookies” of different takes of other UA-camrs, I am now going to have to go back and rewatch those videos. You have two thumbs up from me. I love that you have created a niche and I am engaged. I’m learning so much, thanks.
I love how you science the hell out of this. What a great breakdown - thank you! I wonder how many of these decisions were intentional vs intuitive.
The best breakdown of a youtube video of all time dude ❤😍
so close to 100 k mannn
happy to say i watched you grow
you r insane bro....thnx for giving most expensive knowledge...
thank you is not a enough word to say thank you.
Hey man! Don't have time to watch yet, but will later tonight. Just wanted hope on real quick to tell you I love the content man. Such a cool way to get this info. I'm working hard to figure out things like sound design and I really appreciate your input. Keep the videos coming my friend. 👊😎 cheers!
I just started watching your videos and they are amazing, your videos are very helpful
Crazy how much needs to be put into making great content... thanks for breaking it down!
Made it to another premiere!!! It's so amazing seeing your channel grow, you're just 23k shy from 100k!!! MUCH LOVE HAYDEN!
how amazing! this guy is amazing
Great to chat with you in the chat before it went live.
Wow I am so glad I found you! I’m not just saying this to be whatever, you actually make sense when you are talking about this stuff. Other people I watch are so confusing and you aren’t. Good job
I just started watching you and I’ve already learned so much
That was another great video, thanks for sharing!
As someone who is trying to learn editing and trying to make my own videos engaging etc. This video was incredibly interesting and I feel like has given me value. Great work! Will be checking your other stuff out too!
GREAT VID. And great... glasses 🤓 Can’t resist.
Great analysis! Flawless editing
Great breakdown! Learning a lot from you
as always awesome content mate!
Well done on the Pokémon video, one of the best pieces of content this year
these are helping me so much lmao THANK YOU HAYDEN
Bro your videos are amazing! I look up to you bro! Wish I could learn more quickly so I can maybe one day be as good as you are!
its amazing how much efffort goes into the videos we see everyday.
Dude these videos are so sick. I just started to dip my toes into making youtube videos this year and I can already think of so many areas to improve my editing/storytelling from my next video.
Excellent breakdown! Great points about the geography/location settings and characters. Surprised you didn't go crazy at the record scratch cut in the music at 11:13 :P
Such a great breakdown, I always try to learn more about WTF I am doing. DP's editing is amazing, but as much as the logo is amazing for DP, I agree with the initial thoughts. Don't need it.
Dude, you're a freaking legend man! You're literally learning all the in depth/ advanced tips to make an edit perfect. Everyone can make tutorials on how to edit with a certain program but the way you understand and explain how to edit, why some things work and don't is freaking good man. Keep doing these kinda vids, I freaking love them!
suprised its free in the first place
@@maddoxsmith4611 he's gonna come out with a paid course and I bet a lot of people are gonna buy it since he gave a lot of value for free already
I try all your tips on my videos! Great channel! I think music is so important!
as a youtuber , i fell in love with dude perfect based off of the music they use! perfect example being their documentary! who ever chooses their is extremely good at his/her job!! David dobrik is also another perfect choice for choosing great music to match the moment in the video and You as well Hillier!! you do an amazing job! and i am learning a lot everyday !!! i dont buy online courses but yours is the one i would pay for if i could afford it!! thank you for making these videos bc they help me a lot as a creator!!
I found your channel like 5 minutes ago and subscribed straight away, you produce amazing content honestly. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
He is the truth at editing and fully understands what makes good youtube videos.
This is a different type of “breakdown” amazing
Love your channel!
I learned a lot, thank you!
Your channel is straight gold
I liked the logo placement, plus the animation is badass
Amazing channel, I learn so much listening to you.
Someone give this guy 100k ASAP !! just binge watched like all his videos.......learnt more than ever bout editing
Would you be willing to create a longer video breaking down the editing and camera work of kinetic energy? The bit you left in Peter McKinnon's video left me craving more!
Saw this Channel from Peter MacKinnon's comment box, hope to see more interesting facts about video editing, more power!
You made me watch the entire video about keeping viewers retention 😂 damn you’re good 💪
Brilliant breakdown, I would have enjoyed this video so much without ever taking into account the why.
Love your insights, I'm currently working on my first video and I have no idea about editing. So it's super interesting to hear about the thought process that goes into these videos. My videos are very different to the ones you've covered (mostly talking-head, about programming) but I'm trying to gather some information about how I can make the videos more interesting as I improve, so yeah super useful videos for me. I'm still in the 'try to come across as human' phase, though I'm getting there slowly :)
love your vids dude
every video is valuable information. thank you so much
As always THANK YOU
Personally, I love the intro, it gives you an intermission and allows you to get excited about what's coming next. Kind of like standing on the edge of a plane you are about to skydive out of. Also the sick animations of the intro make it even better.
Thank you for inspiring dreams to come true I’m so happy you’re here 💗😭🙌🏾
Holy cow, amazing breakdown! This makes me think SO much more critically about the way I edit. Also I fully agree that the #DPeditors need a raise for thier drone coverage!
They used “RECORD SCRATCH”
But no comment from Hillier still. So... it’s fine?
A sin
@@adhdtravels01 I was waiting for him to say NO¡
I REALLY LIKED YOU EXPERIENCE IN EDITING AND STUFF!!!!!!👍
Great video! I would say the logo was good for branding and lends to your point of relaxing the viewer
When the music cuts out, its also the reveal within the stiry of the truce. The audience knew, but the characters did not, making it a somber realization for yellow
Thank you for inspiring dreams to come true, I'm so happy you're here 💗😭🙌
Our opinion on the logo - it establishes and builds the brand. Yes, audience retention is important and the video itself would have been better without it. In the bigger picture, they're trying to build loyalty to their brand over any one particular video concept. But we could be wrong! Thanks for the breakdown. Gives us plenty of great ideas!
I think better with it. Just like how all tv shows have the into.
They are like a tv show in how people tune in every week expecting the same result they had the last time.
People love familiarity. With a twist.
Plus brand recognition. For me it’s not just a video it’s a business asset.
That’s at least what I think coming from an advertising background and spending around a million a month in ads.
Great video, always love watching them 👏👏👏
This video really educated me a whole lot
Thank you once again Hayden bro! Raza :)
this is so very dope i love dude perfect
Hey i loved your breakdown on peters channel. Was very surprised to see you on there being a fan of Logans for a few years. So do you think you could do some breakdowns of other videographers videos like how you did peters. I loved that. I love your breakdowns. Every one of them is amazing. Great video and thanks.
wow man, I learned a lot of things about editing with just one video.
Interesting! Nice video. ✌️
You deserve more subscribers than Logan Paul! The way you understand and interpret editing is truly genius and as a growing editor myself, your thoughts/breakdowns are priceless!
Tbh the most mindblowing thing about this video is you laughing about the record scratch in 11:15 😂
For some reason I like the logo at the beginning 😂
Man Hillier your the next big thing, no one has thought to do what you are doing. I’d give anything to have this mentality editing or filming do you have a course or something?
Dang chad and Tim really out did them selves if there getting a shout out from you!
Wow! I came to watch after I saw a clip of you in Mcknon video! Macknon? Maknon, is it spelled like that? Men I love your content. I love the story background of your videos. Just like you wanted it, I have subscribed and liked this video. To keep my subscription, be a great story teller and I am hooked for good!
6:00 Damn i didn’t realised that when i watched the video before. Crazy!
I agree with you that the logo feels a little out of place, but at the same time it’s channel branding so seeing it probably helps with recognition of who they are to new viewers. Great video!
The first video of yours that popped into my home page was the mistakes editors make that annoy me or something, then I practically binged all the rest of them, you are so the best I've seen about this editing topic. Now I have a question, how other kinds of content can apply for example, the part where the twins talk to each other. you say audiences knowing something that the others don't makes it more engaging, if the video doesn't have many characters how can we apply this? could you make a video reacting to other kinds of content that perform great but are not specifically adventure content? or is it too much to ask ahhahha
Awesome
Lila sent me here. Glad she did. Great master class! Thank you.
Loving these editing talks! I know it’s not your space but can you discuss a good gaming editor?
I think the intro makes you feel like you’re at home with family. Matt Carickar (might be spelled wrong) does an outro on Demolition Ranch and a different one on Off The Ranch that replays fun times and when he got an intro for Off The Ranch i was like, cool.
The next level of editing
I think the intro is so cool it keeps people in the video
You might be my favorite youtuber
