    Candyman is one of those weird horror movies that breaks almost every rule of horror movies - low body count, killer is almost always in full light and ends up a tragic, sympathetic character - and works better than almost every other 90s horror movie because of it.

      Candyman is interesting because it’s thought of as a slasher movie but it’s really a thirties universal monster movie made in the nineties.

    What I love about Candyman that the other films fucked up is the feeling that it truly is "a legend". A story passed down from person to person, each generation adding thru own touch to build on it. With the first film we are merely seeing how part of the legend came to be
    By making him just a Jason or a Freddy misses the point entirely.

      Well said

    • @defender2222
      @defender2222 3 роки тому +9

      @@stefanfilipovits21 Its honestly why I am hoping that the 2021 version is going to go the route that the Candyman legend from the first film isn't the true origin of him. That instead Candyman absorbs into himself all these different origins, taking bits and pieces from each retelling and adding them to himself. Much as the 'classic vampire' is in fact just many different tellings of the legend pieced together so too is Candyman. There really was a son of a slave who loved a white woman and died because of it. But there was also a nice man who handed out candy who had a false hand and was brutally killed when he was falsely accused of a crime. And another man killed for being a suspected pedo but was innocent.
      I'm hoping the new movie is that there is no singular origin for Candyman. He absorbs other legends into himself, much like how Greek Myth did that with Herakles. The hook came from one legends. The coat another. The bees another. So on and so on. A being not of our world that takes from the legends to build itself up

    • @Japaneseanimeguy
      @Japaneseanimeguy 3 роки тому +5

      I also always loved how in the original (until the very end anyway), you could keep guessing as to whether he was real or if Helen was simply so wrapped up in the legends herself that it was affecting her grasp on reality. As is the case with the legend itself in-movie, the audience is also speculating just how much of what they're seeing is reliable. Either outcome would have worked, but revealing it is real not only means we get a sweet final scare, but also gives you that final sense of "well yes, it could just be a story...but do you want to risk it?"

    I never saw the sequels, but I remember the first one. Probably one of the best horror movies of the pre-Scream era. I saw the first one with friends freshman year in high school. It scared me, but thought nothing of it. When I went home, I was afraid to look at a mirror or window for a week. To make matters worse, the bathroom light went out and no one did anything for a couple of days. So I had to turn the hallway light while keeping the bathroom door cracked whenever I in there during nighttime. A decade later, my younger brother was telling me he and his college friends were watching the same movie but high af. They though it was hilarious and that Tony Todd sounded like a pimp smh

His calm demeanor is a huge part of what makes him feel threatening. Eddie flourishes in more bombastic, flashy roles. That said, he was great in Vampire in Brooklyn.

As a kid, I thought the story of saying Candyman in the mirror 5 times was around before the movie, that the movie was cashing in on an urban legend and not creating one. 2:58- Um, professor, I think you're in the wrong class. You want the one showing the 1980 movie Alligator, next door.
    Tony Todd is an awesome actor. He's also awesome in other roles, from playing Worf's brother Kurn in Star Trek, to playing the voice of The Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Also, thank God they didn't go along with hiring Eddie Murphy.
    11:17- Being taught by Amanda Waller? No thanks. I'd rather whack her in the head with a golf putter.

    25:16- Yeah, but that movie had jump scares that would make fans of The Bye Bye Man crap their pants.
    28:58- I take it that Ethan is the Sol of this movie. Fuck Ethan!
    36:47- If this 1999 movie set in Los Angeles is suppose to take place in the future, the sets should look like they were previously used in Blade Runner. This movie looks as 2020 as the movie 2020: Texas Gladiators, minus the shields with huge-ass holes in the middle.
    38:59- Yeah, me too.
    42:41- Don't Bring Frank Miller into this. He's gonna make the Candyman series Holy Terror levels of creepy, insulting, and stupid.

    The first Candyman is pretty great, it's tense, has nice direction and well rounded characters who feel like real people and not like stock horror characters who are just there to die.
    Tony Todd knocks it out of the park as well.
    They should have left it as a standalone film because it had a good ending but i guess every good horror needs it's shit sequels.
