I've recently made a transition from fanart to original characters, and it's been rough. Kinda sucks to spend several days on a piece only for most people to ignore it in favor of a 10-minute doodle of Freddy Fazbear. 💀 That's just a fact of being an artist, though. Takes a lot more work to get people invested in your characters, especially when you have yet to share their stories. I don't really pay much attention to likes and views since I currently don't make money off my art, but I always love getting comments. It tells me my work was thought-provoking or striking enough for someone to want to share their thoughts with me. It's the greatest gift I could ever receive as an artist. 👀💕
I found that it helps to provide context! People aren't gonna care about random characters on an empty background (not saying that's what you're doing, just in general), so things like mini-comics or drawing your oc's in memes, or drawing out scenes from their personal storyline can help people feel more invested!
That’s actually really interesting to hear that the profile aesthetic thing doesn’t always work. I feel like artists have a lot of pressure to make their insta account hyper consistent (to a point where they’re kind of boxed into this one thing they are known for) and also to showcase their personal life
to other artist (especially new ones!): Don't worry, you don't HAVE to do comics!!! Comics are a TON of work, even without color. And you're absolutely gonna get bored doing art that only appeals to a large audience if it doesn't appeal to you. Draw what you're most passionate about! It's okay to have a small passionate following rather than a large superficial one. People will see your passion.
I guess me... but hey, thanks for acknowledging how hard comics are. Even with amateur work, it was still majorly time dedicated to it. I'm not bored when I draw mine, but just get exhausted or overwhelmed after multiple pages a day. I'm the writer too--which is the most stressful part. I have to make sure what I'm doing is the better story compared to contemporaries ect. Usually exploring territory most don't think about.
Back in 2020 I felt like my comics and art was finally getting seen. Now with Instagram reels and new algorithm it been hard. I also been posting reels, but my comics/art hasn’t been able to reach more people as it used to. There are some comic mutuals who were doing well back 2020 but it is different now from what they told me. These days I been focusing on my crafts. I may not have a large following but it makes me happy to work on my craft. I still get sales on my shop. I also learn you don’t need a large following to be a working artist. It’s hard sometimes. I love to be able to work on social media more later on. Being a freelancer is also hard and I try not to be on social media too long worrying about likes and such. I wish those luck too with social media! Also those who are having a hard time with social media I just want you to know you are amazing and social media doesn’t justify who you are.

@@infinitesurge9641 I wish you the best too! Social media is hard sometimes these days. I focus more on building my freelance career and I learn you don’t need a large following for that. I also been told that by professionals working in field that I’m interested in. Sometimes some things that go viral or popular online isn’t what art directors look for and some companies want to see a portfolio of your skills if it fits for them.

Tho they are an art teacher so they have something stable to fall back to. I posted something from my shop on tiktok and got 1 million views. I got sales but it’s not a ton. Sometimes exposure doesn’t pay the bills.

@@infinitesurge9641 Yes that’s why I just think it’s best to work on your craft. You don’t need a lot of followers to be working artist if that’s what you’re aiming for unless you want to be popular. There are ways to be a working artist without social media. Uploading art on social media can be a landing page. That’s what some artists have said before. I also seen a children book artist who has many books and known for their work, but don’t have a ton of followers like under 500.
Thanks for mentioning that profile cohesion isn't always needed😭 before I started my art account I was most active in the bookstagram community, where having a consistent theme in your feed is a lot more important to people and its been very tough for me to let go of that when posting my art

Haha it's so sad to hear that some people don't care about backgrounds!! BG's can be gorgeous and emotional and totally take you somewhere mentally! Imagine a beautiful BG bathed in warm sunlight or somewhere moody and intimidating or magical and fantastical... Think of the places that all your favorite movies take place!!
For me personally, the only backgrounds I like are ones from my favourite movie, nothing else really matters to me but surely there's a market somewhere right? Especially since most paintings I see are all scenic backgrounds style paintings/illustration.
What suckt the most as an artist is not just the algorithm sharing your art to only 4 people out of however many people follow you, but how FANARt gets more views than original content... I find it difficult to find ways to make my characters intresting... without them being boring
It's not really about how interesting your charecter design is or how cool your oc may appear. Let's say you made a fantastic well rounded oc that you post about, i mean sure they'd like them when they see them but that would be the end of it and they'll probably be forgotten about the next day (we're talking about the average viewer here. Who might not care much/ appreciate charecter design for what it's worth, and that is FINE) the reason behind that is because, they didn't build an emotional connection with this oc. They can't find much personal value to it. While with fanart, these are *established* charecters we're talking about. Charecters that the audience already built an emotional connection with. They're interested in their story and love them for who they are. The audience is so attached to them that they'd SEEK out more content of them outside of canon. An oc can't beat that and it's not something we can complain about because the audiences are subject to like whatever they wanna like. It's essential to understand the audience instead of expecting of them the things that we want. In an abstract ideal, original work is your more "valuable" work compared to your fanart. But that's just not how the reality of things is, we can't force people to value the content the way we value it personally or holding them to the same standards we hold. But in conclusion, to out-do fanart you need to put in the immense work and effort of establishing your oc as a charecter your audience can care about and build that emotional connection with. In the same way they hold connection for media charecters (and that's on how efficient of a storyteller you could be). We can't forget that the owners of these media charecters had already gone throw the same process of laboring over their work to finally succeed as storytellers. (Excuse the long reply if it's not what you were open to accept. But i had to say what i think you were kinda turning a blind eye on)
I think my character and designs are very interesting... although when I drew them recently it did NOT have the same pull as it did a time ago. Like, they were liked for their design... I shared a picture of him one time just early. I get so irked when a character when I'm casually talking about them, got so much interest. Like I was just talking about them, nothing more to the art to say~.

It doesn't really. ALL illustrators/painters have been losing followers. Look at Sibylline Meyet for example, she lost 25k followers in the last few months. With the advent of reels, the audience is getting trained to want high dopamine content. Funny, cute comics can deliver part of that. A landscape painting, or even a whimsical illustration won't.
@@EugeniaLoli this sucks to hear, as someone trying to find an audience on instagram. I do want to try to get into comics, but at my heart I'm more of an illustrator, so it sounds like it's going to be an uphill battle on instagram for the time being.

Yup. As a veteran comic book artist with over ten years of experience, I have the New York Times Best Selling badge and the Bram Stoker award under my belt. Even after using, for years, Gary V's and other business gurus' advice, my Instagram account was a complete flop. I made a joke and created a fake account where I drew cartoonish and manga-style artwork. It had more views and followers than my official account. Then I deleted the false account and stopped using my real one... And started to think it was better to deal only with publishers because if it depended on the internet audience, I was starving to death without paying bills. Sometimes the path that everyone is trying to avoid is the one that is best for you.
I use to love making comics it was all I did. Then after some art theft after learning about the art community I started trying to do everything else but comics till I forgot I even loved doing it, my art became aimless and flat. I almost gave up on art. Then I found your channel and you reminded me of my true passions. Thank you Michelle

@@mewTripled This may sound strange but these patterns kind of what pushed me to just delete everything and start a fresh and not get caught up in not wanting to delete something because it did well or because it did bad. I look at instagram now as a quick stop before looking into other links, hopefully my approach works... Cause I currently trying to figure out what makes people click a link lol since IG doesnt have a dedicated link button on post... (Noticed that high engagement doesn't always equal to profile views or link in bio clicks)

Fellow painter here! An abstract painter at that lol and I can full heartedly say that my online presence grew ONLY after I began showing up and networking IRL in my city. Then from word of mouth, becoming genuine friends with other artists, and following gallerists and other background folk involved in the arts, my following began to grow and now I can say I have a genuine community. Theres only 660 of us but I know they all actually care and support me. I realized early on when I started to veer away from illustrations in my own work, that I would not get lucky and be a Paloma peach or Leigh ellexson or even Happy d artist lol even tho I wanted to. I am thriving in the gallery world, and my online presence advertises that

I worked countless hours of commision as a freelancer artist and I didn't even get hundreds of likes or whatever. 1000 likes from complete strangers is not even a match for one person paying you for your art. Algorithm is a joke. Don't waste your talent for free and blindly targeting nonsense!

Yeah, there are a lot of well deserving artists out there who deserve more engagement online with what they do, but there are some small things that maybe can be adjusted with how they approach posting stuff. Not hating, but I could never do this. I'm glad I have a day job I love and art as a hobby where I am 100% free and don't ever try to create something that will catch someone's eye more. I tried being an artist that I wasn't back I. 2019 and 2020 and I got burned out so bad that I stopped for I don't even remember how long. Now I draw for me and me alone. Having a following online as an artist and it being my career has always been my dream as a child but now that I've been posting my art online and trying to play the algorithm game, it made me not wanna draw at all anymore. I realized that art as a career is not for me and that's okay.

Nice, but I'm personally not interested in comics. Just like I'm not interested in reels. I'm not into providing high dopamine content. I like calm illustrations instead. Back in 2015, these kinds of posts were gold on instagram, because the chronological order allowed for this content to be seen. Today, they are not promoted at all by IG.
But isn't calm illustrations high dopamine to those of us who like calm vibes??? I always get all dopaminated with calm illustrations and want more of them.
Most people on Social Media are not even there for art, so they don't care. They're there for taylor swift pics or whatever :P Sad ... I wish more people would enjoy and care about Art
i've done a lot of professional work, people like it, and I am extremely grateful that clients have hired me and placed trust in my ability as an illustrator and animator, but when it comes to the social media aspect, it's so difficult. honestly, i think most people on the internet just want to see humanoid looking characters and more importantly, fan art, of their favourite characters. that's the most popular subject, and if you draw pinup art constantly, that's on trend with latest styles, that'll draw a massive social media crowd. i can draw humans but i generally don't because i choose to draw and animate my fairy penguinos, which looks like pictures for babies or little children, which also takes forever (the animations) so the algorithm also doesn't like that because constant content is a requirement. so maybe that's why people aren't entirely interested. or it's simply not finding it's way to the right audience who are interested (in cute things). it's hard to get people to even find and see your works, since self-promotion is quite frowned upon in many places. I'm trying to figure out how to get more eyes. I don't give up, more importantly. I think a better way for some people might be to actually go to conventions and display your art and other works and communicate with people in person. give out goodie bags with your characters and artwork, like little merchandise to show your appreciation for individuals supporting you. form in-person face-to-face relationships or acquaintances and then these individuals can check out your social media too. I hope, because that's what i'm going to try (scary)
at first i used to run after likes and follwers only but then i realised why i started drawing in the first place . so after that i gave up running after likes and drew because i loved the process . ofcourse i know likes are the source of motivation though but now i dont care about it anymore and just post
I always struggle between doing the art I want, which doesn't have a lot of reach as it is very specific and doing something relatable just to appeal to the masses. Watching this video now and usually it’s a combination of skill, appeal and the algorithm. Not always one of the other. With the algorithm first, kept seeing even people with many followers not have their works seen. With appeal, it depends on if the characters or themes they draw appeal to people. Like for example, OCs tend to be overshadowed at times unless you built enough story with them that engages with people. Or if you draw a very popular series that is currently or still trending. With needing to get better if they want to prove that their works deserve to be praised. Even though they should also do it for themselves.
I've been following you on my other account for awhile, and only recently switched to a new profile name. Thank you for sharing your views and experiences! I'm in for a real good uphill battle myself as I'm just starting out new. It really is different from what things used to be.
Art and social media is a popularity contest. When I realized that, I was set free from this minset that if I only got better, I would have more engagement. I did get better and that was not the case.
Watching this video because I’ve been on social media posting my art since 2016 at least with still little to no traction 😢 only roughly 180 followers on my instagram despite its existence spanning since 2016 but I’ve been putting a tone of effort into posting more on it and improving it recently so here’s to hoping this video helps me improve it!
(Story time ahead, sorry lol) Thank for this video. Despite having a life long dream of creating my own graphic novel, my drive has been going down over time and I'm scared that that fire will eventually go out. I wanted to grow an audience fast so that I can have fans when I actually released my comic. At that same time, I was learning digital and illustration so I focused on that to grow my audience. Reality eventually struck as it was a lot harder than I initially thought. I was obsessed with numbers back then and it messed with my mental health as I got really jealous of other fellow artists and friends, got angry often when a post didn't do well at all, etc. I really snapped out of it a while back when I noticed how much I cared and took a step back. Nowadays, I post at my leisure. I now have a full time job so I have to decide after work if I want to rest, draw or write. The former usually being the option unfortunately, aside from other responsibilities. While the passion to continue my dream is still in me, the drive and fire to do so at a consistent rate is low. And I think its mostly because of other important things in life but deep down, I think I kind of gave up. Gave up on growing and reaching that audience. And don't get me wrong I want to, but it just doesn't seem worth stressing about to me anymore especially with how slow and stagnant growth is on Instagram. Of course, I love it when my work gets recognized but when it flops, it flops and that's it. I've struggled to find a way to get people to care about my characters and story, as I mainly post original content (with some rare fanart), but I just don't know how to do it. But after watching this video I think I want to try actually posting short comics; even small ones. In highschool, I was known as one of the art guys, the comic guy. I would always create stories and had folders full of comics that I loved writing and drawing, but it was just for fun. As soon as I wanted to take it seriously, the anxiety and weight of the work ahead of me sort of crippled me. I've made so much progress over the years but I still have so much to do before I can REALLY start my novel but at the same time I made SO much progress that I just can't stop lol. Its a weird feeling. Anyway, comics was always something I loved to do so maybe actually posting some story related comics on my characters will do some good not only just for me but maybe resonate with some people out there. But I can only pray lol. Art will always be a part of my life and this might just be a hurdle I have to jump. Whenever I'm doing comics in my sketchbook I'm always the happiest there. I'm home there, so maybe I can translate that into digital short comics for Instagram (and hopefully other platforms). Again thanks for the video!

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not trying to brag, or come off as bitter, or as someone with a superiority complex, but to further chime in on your sentiment about skill vs popularity. I've been a professional illustrator for just over 20 years, I've worked with Marvel, Disney, 20th Century Fox, D&D, and more...and I routinely have people tell me how much they love my work. However, after 4 years on Instagram, I have less than 100 followers, and on average my posts and reels average around 5 likes or so. I see plenty of popular posts and accounts displaying work that I recognize as being technically inferior to my own art, and at times it can be disheartening and spur me to wonder what I'm doing wrong. I just tell myself that if I want to maintain a consistent presence on the platform, I need to do it by creating what I enjoy making most, instead of catering to what I think other people want to see. To do otherwise drains the passion out of a piece, turns posting and creating into a chore, and I think that will be the death knell for any artist trying to maintain a consistent online presence. You should know what audience you're trying to attract, but you should be faithful to yourself first and foremost.
Since June of this year I've been posting parts of a comic I'm writing on UA-cam Shorts. It was my first time and I liked it. Especially how I get to use an audio library. I heard shorts are a great way to grow your channel and get subscribers. And so far it has been working great. I've been getting hundreds of likes on them, particularly the ones not age restricted. And I've been getting quite a few subscribers. I have 72 currently.
I think is worth to comment that likes and followers are not the most important in any social media but engagement, interaction, etc. In fact, been viral is the worst that can happen to your account because it brings new followers and engagement but they are all like junk food to your account, they won't engage to your future content and your statistics are going to suffer from having lots of followers but low interaction. A mostly unknown account but with loyal followers that interact is more reward by the algorithm than a viral account that just make junk content. That being said, if you are an artist focused on comics of course your followers are going to interact more with the comic content than with illustrations, that's why they are following you. At the end, people are going to follow because your type of content calls to them and you have to focus on that. If you do comics focus on comics. If you are a watercolorist focus on watercolor and do content about everything of the watercolor world, show your process, film yourself watercoloring, etc. I can assure you, the people who follows the trends are the last ones you want as followers. They are junk followers, the won't give you anything but algorithm headaches.

never in my life gain a lot of views on any of my site, so I give up on drawing, easy xD I find other things that makes me happy since no matter how much I tried I give up on some point, sometimes I still draw but I only for myself, and if I'll post it, it is because just to not lose the art if something happening with my pc or something

My art doesnt get likes or views cuz i dont make anything😂 Living that art blocked life for the past 4 years lmao, still somehow have a job though. But in all seriousness, I kinda just stopped... I needed it to "break" into certain industries(from film gfx/vfx into gamedev), but now that I'm there, I just dont feel like it? And just dont have the time after work, with all adulting that needs to be done, daily.

Thank you so much for sharing. I really learnt a lot! I draw stand-alone doodle and starting with a cohesive way too. I found it works quite well at first, a friend of mine we started promoting art on Instagram at the same time. I’m more cohesive and consistently to produce, ppl get the style easily and I now have more followers than her. However, I have been struggling becoz I want to show more side of myself. I have many other art styles wanted to be seen. It is hard to suddenly break the pattern as I assumed ppl who follow already have an expectation or taste. I decided to show it on highlight story and reels. Also, it is sometimes so difficult to strike a balance between getting big on social media vs draw what I want even it will be unpopular. So sometimes I just ghost on social media and be loyal to myself 😂

Call it fate........but this was in my feed, and at what a coincidence too, I was just starting to reinvent/rebrand everything involving my social input moving forward, I also believed that I followed this channel from back in the early 2010s and around 2009, being inspired by your art inputs. Anyway, I recently archived my posts on my regular Instagram to be only for edited self shots and videos, and recently created a separate insta account exclusively for my art, you gave me an idea that I will proceed to move forward in as I've improved further and more confident enough to display a score of my talents, which I will not only share comics, but art works over the past short years. I'm doing the came to my UA-cam as well as I learned many things, and created 3 separate channels to exclusively harbor my creative ambitions as I have plans for the main. The comics input has given me such as idea to try, I don't know what to say. Anyway, thanks for supplying your know-how and I look forward towards implementing it.
Btw your work is not reflected by the amount of likes you get. there are incredible artists who are not as popular as they should be. That doesn't make their art lesser. The quicker you internalize that, the easier it gets to control your pessimism.
Obviously it sucks that these platforms can’t also cater to artists, but that’s the thing, these apps aren’t art apps. They are social media apps, and they will work in a way that’ll keep as many ppl as possible viewing the content & staying on the platform. And ofc superficial & fast content, & anything that boosts engagement is what these apps care about. And obviously only some type of art will get more engagement. Unfortunately artists refuse to do the things that may help them gain a following & engagement bc they feel like they’re “selling out” but guess what, these apps were built for this type of content & that’s the content they will push more. Sure you can sit there & complain, but in the end you gotta do what needs to be done, otherwise you’re just complaining and doing nothing to help yourself.
For example I like posting more of my “masterpieces” or finished drawings/fanart on Deviantart. I feel like posting on there is more rewarding cuz it’s an art website & that’s what ppl are wanting to look at. Ppl on twitter or instagram like the kind of “reimagined Disney princess!!” Type of stuff.
This is an interesting video. I just started my art instagram account and I'm doing it with a very clear goal in mind: to be able to sell a comic after a few years. Right now, it's just for fun, and I post a lot of fanart because that's what I like to draw and it's fun, and even if my fanart doesn't get many views/likes (because welcome to the pain of being part of a fandom whose English-speaking community is pretty small and the fandom is bigger in Japan where Instagram is NOT the main platform for fanartists or artists in general), I still enjoy working on it and putting it out there so if someone does want to find it, they can. What I'm wondering is how to get people interested in a comic about characters they don't really know (my OCs) without just telling the stories of the characters because THAT'S WHAT THE COMIC IS FOR. How do I slowly grow people's interest in my characters to get them interested in the comic when I finally release it?

That's beyond relatable because sheesh, all I can say is stay determined and never give up, those dead posts will someday gain traction when you do establish yourself and people are hooked to your stuff It's like a dormant larvae sitting in the nest
It's so interesting because I only have like 350 followers and my doodle-y comics are performing better than my full color portraits 😂 But it's also very OC-heavy, so my followers are invested in them and wanna see them in action but if I would make doodles about my life, I think no one would be interested and that's the harsh truth.
A bad 6 second animation of a dog I posted to Instagram has 327 likes... and counting... LOL Did not expect that... But more growth is good because I want to do art commissions. :)

Especially if you are an artist with a more eclectic mix of things you post, like: commission pieces, daily/weekly doodles, more complex full page drawn/digitally painted pieces, animation, comics, all in one account... is it going to confuse/alienate your audience to have all this stuff mixed on one account? What if you post comics on instagram regularly and people follow you for the comic but they keep getting your posts in their feed of a bunch of stuff that isnt that comic that they dont care about, or vice versa for anything else, it might frustrate or tire followers who are interested in one thing from your account but its inconsistent when you post one type of thing interspersed with everything else. But if you do something like make a separate social media for just the comics for example, then you have the burden of having a WHOLE SEPARATE account to try and constantly boost and get exposure to and having to direct everyone back to your main art account/etc, plus even if this is doable, if you have more than 2 types of things you post its impossible to have separate accounts for them all. But sites like twitter/X, insta, facebook are so bad at organizing posts into groups, and how much variety is safe to post on one account before you need to consider if youre alienating any audiences or overwhelming your followers and not able to find a niche or fan base to market clearly to? Should artists playing the social media game try to streamline the art/styles they post for the sake of honing in on a clear audience to advertise yourself to? This is something i struggle with most, im desperate for an experienced artist's opinion and advice on this.

i really don't like and don't care about popularity and views at all to be honest i think popularitiy is overrated i always love prefer unpopularity over popularity i do love art like drawing, plainting, clayart and digital art just because someone think it's bad art to someone it may not be bad art to someone else that it may be good art to some people everyone has a difference opinions preference what is good or bad or ok decent artwork to them just like most say can't please everyone that's ok i'm fine if they care or don't care about my art to be honest because i rather do it just for fun i don't want to take it seriously trying to please others being someone that i'm not that won't make me happy i rather be my real true self that's just me
I'm just destined to be an outsider artist, so views being hit and miss seems nothing new. Also does setting up the camera angle to look upwards enough and accentuate your nostrils help with audience participation? (lol I'm terrible like that, sorry.)

I've recently made a transition from fanart to original characters, and it's been rough. Kinda sucks to spend several days on a piece only for most people to ignore it in favor of a 10-minute doodle of Freddy Fazbear. 💀 That's just a fact of being an artist, though. Takes a lot more work to get people invested in your characters, especially when you have yet to share their stories.
I don't really pay much attention to likes and views since I currently don't make money off my art, but I always love getting comments. It tells me my work was thought-provoking or striking enough for someone to want to share their thoughts with me. It's the greatest gift I could ever receive as an artist. 👀💕
I found that it helps to provide context! People aren't gonna care about random characters on an empty background (not saying that's what you're doing, just in general), so things like mini-comics or drawing your oc's in memes, or drawing out scenes from their personal storyline can help people feel more invested!
Memes are good. They’re fun and can make you ocs more approachable

I feel like artists have a lot of pressure to make their insta account hyper consistent (to a point where they’re kind of boxed into this one thing they are known for) and also to showcase their personal life
to other artist (especially new ones!): Don't worry, you don't HAVE to do comics!!! Comics are a TON of work, even without color. And you're absolutely gonna get bored doing art that only appeals to a large audience if it doesn't appeal to you. Draw what you're most passionate about! It's okay to have a small passionate following rather than a large superficial one. People will see your passion.

I guess me... but hey, thanks for acknowledging how hard comics are. Even with amateur work, it was still majorly time dedicated to it. I'm not bored when I draw mine, but just get exhausted or overwhelmed after multiple pages a day. I'm the writer too--which is the most stressful part. I have to make sure what I'm doing is the better story compared to contemporaries ect. Usually exploring territory most don't think about.

Back in 2020 I felt like my comics and art was finally getting seen. Now with Instagram reels and new algorithm it been hard. I also been posting reels, but my comics/art hasn’t been able to reach more people as it used to. There are some comic mutuals who were doing well back 2020 but it is different now from what they told me. These days I been focusing on my crafts. I may not have a large following but it makes me happy to work on my craft. I still get sales on my shop. I also learn you don’t need a large following to be a working artist. It’s hard sometimes. I love to be able to work on social media more later on. Being a freelancer is also hard and I try not to be on social media too long worrying about likes and such. I wish those luck too with social media! Also those who are having a hard time with social media I just want you to know you are amazing and social media doesn’t justify who you are.

I also been told that by professionals working in field that I’m interested in. Sometimes some things that go viral or popular online isn’t what art directors look for and some companies want to see a portfolio of your skills if it fits for them.

@@infinitesurge9641 Yes that’s why I just think it’s best to work on your craft. You don’t need a lot of followers to be working artist if that’s what you’re aiming for unless you want to be popular. There are ways to be a working artist without social media. Uploading art on social media can be a landing page. That’s what some artists have said before. I also seen a children book artist who has many books and known for their work, but don’t have a ton of followers like under 500.
Thanks for mentioning that profile cohesion isn't always needed😭 before I started my art account I was most active in the bookstagram community, where having a consistent theme in your feed is a lot more important to people and its been very tough for me to let go of that when posting my art

Haha it's so sad to hear that some people don't care about backgrounds!! BG's can be gorgeous and emotional and totally take you somewhere mentally! Imagine a beautiful BG bathed in warm sunlight or somewhere moody and intimidating or magical and fantastical... Think of the places that all your favorite movies take place!!
For me personally, the only backgrounds I like are ones from my favourite movie, nothing else really matters to me but surely there's a market somewhere right? Especially since most paintings I see are all scenic backgrounds style paintings/illustration.
What suckt the most as an artist is not just the algorithm sharing your art to only 4 people out of however many people follow you, but how FANARt gets more views than original content... I find it difficult to find ways to make my characters intresting... without them being boring
It's not really about how interesting your charecter design is or how cool your oc may appear. Let's say you made a fantastic well rounded oc that you post about, i mean sure they'd like them when they see them but that would be the end of it and they'll probably be forgotten about the next day (we're talking about the average viewer here. Who might not care much/ appreciate charecter design for what it's worth, and that is FINE) the reason behind that is because, they didn't build an emotional connection with this oc. They can't find much personal value to it. While with fanart, these are *established* charecters we're talking about. Charecters that the audience already built an emotional connection with. They're interested in their story and love them for who they are. The audience is so attached to them that they'd SEEK out more content of them outside of canon. An oc can't beat that and it's not something we can complain about because the audiences are subject to like whatever they wanna like. It's essential to understand the audience instead of expecting of them the things that we want. In an abstract ideal, original work is your more "valuable" work compared to your fanart. But that's just not how the reality of things is, we can't force people to value the content the way we value it personally or holding them to the same standards we hold.
But in conclusion, to out-do fanart you need to put in the immense work and effort of establishing your oc as a charecter your audience can care about and build that emotional connection with. In the same way they hold connection for media charecters (and that's on how efficient of a storyteller you could be). We can't forget that the owners of these media charecters had already gone throw the same process of laboring over their work to finally succeed as storytellers. (Excuse the long reply if it's not what you were open to accept. But i had to say what i think you were kinda turning a blind eye on)

I think my character and designs are very interesting... although when I drew them recently it did NOT have the same pull as it did a time ago. Like, they were liked for their design... I shared a picture of him one time just early. I get so irked when a character when I'm casually talking about them, got so much interest. Like I was just talking about them, nothing more to the art to say~.

It doesn't really. ALL illustrators/painters have been losing followers. Look at Sibylline Meyet for example, she lost 25k followers in the last few months. With the advent of reels, the audience is getting trained to want high dopamine content. Funny, cute comics can deliver part of that. A landscape painting, or even a whimsical illustration won't.

Yup. As a veteran comic book artist with over ten years of experience, I have the New York Times Best Selling badge and the Bram Stoker award under my belt. Even after using, for years, Gary V's and other business gurus' advice, my Instagram account was a complete flop. I made a joke and created a fake account where I drew cartoonish and manga-style artwork. It had more views and followers than my official account. Then I deleted the false account and stopped using my real one... And started to think it was better to deal only with publishers because if it depended on the internet audience, I was starving to death without paying bills. Sometimes the path that everyone is trying to avoid is the one that is best for you.

Fellow painter here! An abstract painter at that lol and I can full heartedly say that my online presence grew ONLY after I began showing up and networking IRL in my city. Then from word of mouth, becoming genuine friends with other artists, and following gallerists and other background folk involved in the arts, my following began to grow and now I can say I have a genuine community. Theres only 660 of us but I know they all actually care and support me. I realized early on when I started to veer away from illustrations in my own work, that I would not get lucky and be a Paloma peach or Leigh ellexson or even Happy d artist lol even tho I wanted to. I am thriving in the gallery world, and my online presence advertises that

Most people on Social Media are not even there for art, so they don't care. They're there for taylor swift pics or whatever :P Sad ... I wish more people would enjoy and care about Art
i've done a lot of professional work, people like it, and I am extremely grateful that clients have hired me and placed trust in my ability as an illustrator and animator, but when it comes to the social media aspect, it's so difficult. honestly, i think most people on the internet just want to see humanoid looking characters and more importantly, fan art, of their favourite characters. that's the most popular subject, and if you draw pinup art constantly, that's on trend with latest styles, that'll draw a massive social media crowd. i can draw humans but i generally don't because i choose to draw and animate my fairy penguinos, which looks like pictures for babies or little children, which also takes forever (the animations) so the algorithm also doesn't like that because constant content is a requirement. so maybe that's why people aren't entirely interested. or it's simply not finding it's way to the right audience who are interested (in cute things). it's hard to get people to even find and see your works, since self-promotion is quite frowned upon in many places. I'm trying to figure out how to get more eyes. I don't give up, more importantly.
I think a better way for some people might be to actually go to conventions and display your art and other works and communicate with people in person. give out goodie bags with your characters and artwork, like little merchandise to show your appreciation for individuals supporting you. form in-person face-to-face relationships or acquaintances and then these individuals can check out your social media too. I hope, because that's what i'm going to try (scary)

Watching this video now and usually it’s a combination of skill, appeal and the algorithm. Not always one of the other.
With the algorithm first, kept seeing even people with many followers not have their works seen.
With appeal, it depends on if the characters or themes they draw appeal to people. Like for example, OCs tend to be overshadowed at times unless you built enough story with them that engages with people. Or if you draw a very popular series that is currently or still trending.
With needing to get better if they want to prove that their works deserve to be praised. Even though they should also do it for themselves.
Ironically people only like my OCs cause their super cute so they tend to do ok but not as well as fanart for me 😭😭

Art and social media is a popularity contest. When I realized that, I was set free from this minset that if I only got better, I would have more engagement. I did get better and that was not the case.
Watching this video because I’ve been on social media posting my art since 2016 at least with still little to no traction 😢 only roughly 180 followers on my instagram despite its existence spanning since 2016 but I’ve been putting a tone of effort into posting more on it and improving it recently so here’s to hoping this video helps me improve it!

Thank for this video. Despite having a life long dream of creating my own graphic novel, my drive has been going down over time and I'm scared that that fire will eventually go out.
I wanted to grow an audience fast so that I can have fans when I actually released my comic. At that same time, I was learning digital and illustration so I focused on that to grow my audience.
Reality eventually struck as it was a lot harder than I initially thought. I was obsessed with numbers back then and it messed with my mental health as I got really jealous of other fellow artists and friends, got angry often when a post didn't do well at all, etc. I really snapped out of it a while back when I noticed how much I cared and took a step back.
Nowadays, I post at my leisure. I now have a full time job so I have to decide after work if I want to rest, draw or write. The former usually being the option unfortunately, aside from other responsibilities.
While the passion to continue my dream is still in me, the drive and fire to do so at a consistent rate is low. And I think its mostly because of other important things in life but deep down, I think I kind of gave up. Gave up on growing and reaching that audience. And don't get me wrong I want to, but it just doesn't seem worth stressing about to me anymore especially with how slow and stagnant growth is on Instagram. Of course, I love it when my work gets recognized but when it flops, it flops and that's it.
I've struggled to find a way to get people to care about my characters and story, as I mainly post original content (with some rare fanart), but I just don't know how to do it.
But after watching this video I think I want to try actually posting short comics; even small ones. In highschool, I was known as one of the art guys, the comic guy. I would always create stories and had folders full of comics that I loved writing and drawing, but it was just for fun. As soon as I wanted to take it seriously, the anxiety and weight of the work ahead of me sort of crippled me.
I've made so much progress over the years but I still have so much to do before I can REALLY start my novel but at the same time I made SO much progress that I just can't stop lol.
Its a weird feeling.
Anyway, comics was always something I loved to do so maybe actually posting some story related comics on my characters will do some good not only just for me but maybe resonate with some people out there. But I can only pray lol.
Art will always be a part of my life and this might just be a hurdle I have to jump. Whenever I'm doing comics in my sketchbook I'm always the happiest there. I'm home there, so maybe I can translate that into digital short comics for Instagram (and hopefully other platforms).

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not trying to brag, or come off as bitter, or as someone with a superiority complex, but to further chime in on your sentiment about skill vs popularity.
I've been a professional illustrator for just over 20 years, I've worked with Marvel, Disney, 20th Century Fox, D&D, and more...and I routinely have people tell me how much they love my work.
However, after 4 years on Instagram, I have less than 100 followers, and on average my posts and reels average around 5 likes or so.
I see plenty of popular posts and accounts displaying work that I recognize as being technically inferior to my own art, and at times it can be disheartening and spur me to wonder what I'm doing wrong.
I just tell myself that if I want to maintain a consistent presence on the platform, I need to do it by creating what I enjoy making most, instead of catering to what I think other people want to see.
To do otherwise drains the passion out of a piece, turns posting and creating into a chore, and I think that will be the death knell for any artist trying to maintain a consistent online presence.
You should know what audience you're trying to attract, but you should be faithful to yourself first and foremost.
Since June of this year I've been posting parts of a comic I'm writing on UA-cam Shorts. It was my first time and I liked it. Especially how I get to use an audio library. I heard shorts are a great way to grow your channel and get subscribers. And so far it has been working great. I've been getting hundreds of likes on them, particularly the ones not age restricted. And I've been getting quite a few subscribers. I have 72 currently.
As an aspiring artist/content creator, this is very valuable insight. Thank you so much for this video 🙌
I think is worth to comment that likes and followers are not the most important in any social media but engagement, interaction, etc. In fact, been viral is the worst that can happen to your account because it brings new followers and engagement but they are all like junk food to your account, they won't engage to your future content and your statistics are going to suffer from having lots of followers but low interaction. A mostly unknown account but with loyal followers that interact is more reward by the algorithm than a viral account that just make junk content.
That being said, if you are an artist focused on comics of course your followers are going to interact more with the comic content than with illustrations, that's why they are following you.
At the end, people are going to follow because your type of content calls to them and you have to focus on that. If you do comics focus on comics.
If you are a watercolorist focus on watercolor and do content about everything of the watercolor world, show your process, film yourself watercoloring, etc.
I can assure you, the people who follows the trends are the last ones you want as followers. They are junk followers, the won't give you anything but algorithm headaches.

But in all seriousness, I kinda just stopped... I needed it to "break" into certain industries(from film gfx/vfx into gamedev), but now that I'm there, I just dont feel like it? And just dont have the time after work, with all adulting that needs to be done, daily.

Thank you so much for sharing. I really learnt a lot! I draw stand-alone doodle and starting with a cohesive way too. I found it works quite well at first, a friend of mine we started promoting art on Instagram at the same time. I’m more cohesive and consistently to produce, ppl get the style easily and I now have more followers than her. However, I have been struggling becoz I want to show more side of myself. I have many other art styles wanted to be seen. It is hard to suddenly break the pattern as I assumed ppl who follow already have an expectation or taste. I decided to show it on highlight story and reels. Also, it is sometimes so difficult to strike a balance between getting big on social media vs draw what I want even it will be unpopular. So sometimes I just ghost on social media and be loyal to myself 😂

Call it fate........but this was in my feed, and at what a coincidence too, I was just starting to reinvent/rebrand everything involving my social input moving forward, I also believed that I followed this channel from back in the early 2010s and around 2009, being inspired by your art inputs.
Anyway, I recently archived my posts on my regular Instagram to be only for edited self shots and videos, and recently created a separate insta account exclusively for my art, you gave me an idea that I will proceed to move forward in as I've improved further and more confident enough to display a score of my talents, which I will not only share comics, but art works over the past short years.
I'm doing the came to my UA-cam as well as I learned many things, and created 3 separate channels to exclusively harbor my creative ambitions as I have plans for the main.
The comics input has given me such as idea to try, I don't know what to say.
Anyway, thanks for supplying your know-how and I look forward towards implementing it.

Btw your work is not reflected by the amount of likes you get. there are incredible artists who are not as popular as they should be. That doesn't make their art lesser. The quicker you internalize that, the easier it gets to control your pessimism.

Obviously it sucks that these platforms can’t also cater to artists, but that’s the thing, these apps aren’t art apps. They are social media apps, and they will work in a way that’ll keep as many ppl as possible viewing the content & staying on the platform. And ofc superficial & fast content, & anything that boosts engagement is what these apps care about.
And obviously only some type of art will get more engagement.
Unfortunately artists refuse to do the things that may help them gain a following & engagement bc they feel like they’re “selling out” but guess what, these apps were built for this type of content & that’s the content they will push more. Sure you can sit there & complain, but in the end you gotta do what needs to be done, otherwise you’re just complaining and doing nothing to help yourself.
For example I like posting more of my “masterpieces” or finished drawings/fanart on Deviantart. I feel like posting on there is more rewarding cuz it’s an art website & that’s what ppl are wanting to look at. Ppl on twitter or instagram like the kind of “reimagined Disney princess!!” Type of stuff.
This is an interesting video. I just started my art instagram account and I'm doing it with a very clear goal in mind: to be able to sell a comic after a few years. Right now, it's just for fun, and I post a lot of fanart because that's what I like to draw and it's fun, and even if my fanart doesn't get many views/likes (because welcome to the pain of being part of a fandom whose English-speaking community is pretty small and the fandom is bigger in Japan where Instagram is NOT the main platform for fanartists or artists in general), I still enjoy working on it and putting it out there so if someone does want to find it, they can. What I'm wondering is how to get people interested in a comic about characters they don't really know (my OCs) without just telling the stories of the characters because THAT'S WHAT THE COMIC IS FOR. How do I slowly grow people's interest in my characters to get them interested in the comic when I finally release it?

its annoying because it feels like whenever i put my all and effort into a art piece i hardly get any views but when i doodle or draw something not at my fullest potential it gets lots of views but bad comments in return IDK WHAT TO DO
That's beyond relatable because sheesh, all I can say is stay determined and never give up, those dead posts will someday gain traction when you do establish yourself and people are hooked to your stuff

It's so interesting because I only have like 350 followers and my doodle-y comics are performing better than my full color portraits 😂 But it's also very OC-heavy, so my followers are invested in them and wanna see them in action but if I would make doodles about my life, I think no one would be interested and that's the harsh truth.
Noticed my art would get more engagement and likes when I posted colorless doodles or a more traditional cel shading style. Ain't that something.
A bad 6 second animation of a dog I posted to Instagram has 327 likes... and counting... LOL Did not expect that... But more growth is good because I want to do art commissions. :)

So, to get views and likes I need to draw comics? I've been drawing illustrations for 3 years and I have 100 subscribers, it's sad
Could you make a video talking about organization of your work on social media/how you present the full scope of your work through the apps/sites you post on? Especially if you are an artist with a more eclectic mix of things you post, like: commission pieces, daily/weekly doodles, more complex full page drawn/digitally painted pieces, animation, comics, all in one account... is it going to confuse/alienate your audience to have all this stuff mixed on one account? What if you post comics on instagram regularly and people follow you for the comic but they keep getting your posts in their feed of a bunch of stuff that isnt that comic that they dont care about, or vice versa for anything else, it might frustrate or tire followers who are interested in one thing from your account but its inconsistent when you post one type of thing interspersed with everything else. But if you do something like make a separate social media for just the comics for example, then you have the burden of having a WHOLE SEPARATE account to try and constantly boost and get exposure to and having to direct everyone back to your main art account/etc, plus even if this is doable, if you have more than 2 types of things you post its impossible to have separate accounts for them all. But sites like twitter/X, insta, facebook are so bad at organizing posts into groups, and how much variety is safe to post on one account before you need to consider if youre alienating any audiences or overwhelming your followers and not able to find a niche or fan base to market clearly to? Should artists playing the social media game try to streamline the art/styles they post for the sake of honing in on a clear audience to advertise yourself to? This is something i struggle with most, im desperate for an experienced artist's opinion and advice on this.

i really don't like and don't care about popularity and views at all to be honest i think popularitiy is overrated i always love prefer unpopularity over popularity i do love art like drawing, plainting, clayart and digital art just because someone think it's bad art to someone it may not be bad art to someone else that it may be good art to some people everyone has a difference opinions preference what is good or bad or ok decent artwork to them just like most say can't please everyone that's ok i'm fine if they care or don't care about my art to be honest because i rather do it just for fun i don't want to take it seriously trying to please others being someone that i'm not that won't make me happy i rather be my real true self that's just me
I'm just destined to be an outsider artist, so views being hit and miss seems nothing new. Also does setting up the camera angle to look upwards enough and accentuate your nostrils help with audience participation? (lol I'm terrible like that, sorry.)
