What you said about feeling like you need to accomplish a lot when you're young really struck a chord in me. I'm a 19 year old 1st year animation student in New Zealand and I always feel like I'm behind. I have so many projects I'm juggling trying to develop while trying to keep up with social media's algorithms and it often feels overwhelming. Your videos give me hope and remind me I need to take of myself a little more.
I'm an third year student in animation..I'm still struggling to get a grasp of everything while living alone when you have to do everything my yourself..sometimes it's so chaotic..however no need to rush ig..tho it feels like everyone is moving forward than me..I understand it's really so hard to get through everything and finding what u r actually made for
As a middle school student I've been researching this on my own time. I think I have a crippling fear of being unable to sustain myself. I personally have been evolving my art since around 5th grade. When covid started I decided to take it seriously and my passion has fueled it this far. During summer I like giving myself 6 hour days (sometimes I do 8) where I act like it's my actual job and I love it. I burn out quickly so it's hard but when I push through it and just do art for the sake of doing it, it's really rewarding. Lately I've been looking into making money off of it now that I've given myself time to gain experience just doing it. I love the idea of character design and animation although I also work with the traditional mediums a lot too. I am expanding what I've worked with as I grow and I'm excited to see how much more I can do. I'm already looking into uni tuitions so that I have a basic idea of how much I need to save and I already am on social media so that I can push my work out and be noticed. Thanks for making these videos and thank you to whoever's reading this, it means a lot to be able to access information like this despite my age and experience.
Keep practicing, use references and continue to learn gesture drawing. It will boost you for sure. Good luck! You can definitely freelance as your first steps in art career then go from there!
Didn't think I'd get inspired by a middle schooler anytime soon but here I am (in my mid 20s). I just might steal that idea from you and have a day or two per week where I "pretend to be a professional artist." Thanks, man! And best of luck to you!
Can I share? I had a hobby of art since around the same time as you, and I wrote and drew my own parody episodes of (already parody) shows. I got better at art through watching videos and practicing, and was only able to take a class my senior year of high school for the first time. Seeing what I could do under instruction is what made me consider and eventually go to art school. It’s good that you're doing what you're doing. Keep it up! You're already on the right track, and things take time. It's healthy to be worried about the future at your age, and I think you’re going to be great at whatever you end up doing :)
What you said about not needing a degree to be in animation is true unless you need a VISA. Heard examples of former doctors and mathematicians ending up being in Pixar and Disney. And other science majors. Proves how what matters more is skill, and that it gives hope as there are also many, many resources out there.
I'm 17 yo and i'm from brazil. I DON'T have support and money to go to a Art School and my english is not that good either. I'm studying all by myself. I really hope my dream come true.

Hi! I hope this doesnt sound creepy 😅 but I've been following your content since you first posted your calarts submission sketchbook. I was in High School back then, and I really looked up to your art. Although my family didn't allow me to pursue a degree in art and I'm working in an entirely different field, watching your content to this day still inspires me to keep making art (but this time for fun and not as a career). I just want to say, I really love your videos and your art and you still inspire me to this day 💕 Edit: sorry for any grammar mistakes english isnt my first language 😅
To be honest, I want to share something with you. I think you should discuss with your family that family members have no power or the capability to control your future. Your future is yours not theirs. Therefore, if you want to pursue art or not that’s your choice not your family’s. You shouldn’t let your family decide your future especially your job and I think it’s not right to let parents take control of your future when it’s not theirs. Because they have their own future and job so why bother?
I think you also on the right path. Make the first thing you love as hobby, and make your second thing you love as your profession. That way, you will feel happy by doing your hobby
This was super helpful! I’m currently seriously considering quitting my current job as a Personal Assistant (bc finding entry level animation jobs in South Africa seems to be very very difficult 😅). I’d rather work for myself because the 40 hours I’m working as a PA doesn’t add to my portfolio as an artist at all and I’m pretty sure I’d be able to make more money than I currently am at my job if I put those same hours into my own business as a freelancer instead. So hopefully it all works out lol. So while I’m busy making my own freelance business a success, I’m planning on getting a job as a waitress instead of being a PA because then at least I’m interacting with different people instead of being in an office all day on my own.
This video was so helpful! The way you've shared your experience has made the idea of side hustles seem way less overwhelming! I'm finally getting comfortable with sharing my personal projects because of your encouraging content. Thank you!
Thanks you so much for this video! After a long battle recovering from a car accident and finally finishing my art degree (literally last week got the email.) I'm now at the just graduated stage and feeling very unsure about what to do now. This (and your ai videos) are so helpful for helping me focus on what next steps to take and just breathe & adapt when it comes to the whole ai takeover stuff.
Great vid! A lot of things here apply for even professionals. I'm looking at portfolios of pro's who are back on market with very very old portfolio's with little skill ranges. Continuously refining skills or (like what Lam says) having a side project/hustle are highly important. I cry a little when I see resumes of 15yr+ vets with work that's equally as old. All it takes is 30mins a day in most cases!
I am working on sharing my creative journey on youtube and instagram, and am working on a new coloring book to self-publish. Scrapped old designs for now and started anew today, because I got overwhelmed with the previous designs a bit. I currently have some time off school and want to use that while it lasts.
This video is so useful! Thank you! I wonder if there is a chance you might also mention how to master time management in the animation industry as some of the workload might be heavier than we think at first, thus making it harder to meet some deadlines. Any tips or ideas to use time more effectively might help a ton too! Sending you love from Dominican Republic 🫶

I’m gonna join the military just to get the art school opportunity because I come from a poor area, stop telling a sob story and making excuses and go find another video :/
Art school is hella expensive but if you can find public/in state universities near you it's much more affordable, though the quality of the program can be hit or miss. Some art schools require gen eds, taking those at a public or community college could help with cutting the costs of things, but yeah :( it's criminal how much these schools get to charge

But I’m not going to art school/haven’t gone to art school because it is costly. why is this guide so art school centric. Like, most of us will never get to go to art school even if we wanted to. :/
Then this video isn’t meant for you?? She literally says you do not need an art degree.
I’m gonna join the military just to get the art school opportunity because I come from a poor area, stop telling a sob story and making excuses and go find another video :/
@@weenusfranklin2752 that’s amazing!! And very admirable. Wish you the best
@@guggvcjhh3713 Thanks!!
Art school is hella expensive but if you can find public/in state universities near you it's much more affordable, though the quality of the program can be hit or miss. Some art schools require gen eds, taking those at a public or community college could help with cutting the costs of things, but yeah :( it's criminal how much these schools get to charge
Step 1: be broke
Or do stem. Broke person doesn't have time to thinking very deeply.
