The current state of art is depressing. We’re forced to present as wannabe influencers & battling to gain/keep the interest of adults with children’s attention spans. I wonder what’s the value of being an artist in this specific point of time…thank you for making this tho. It is honestly helpful.

That's not the only path to making money as an artist. If you can afford art school/are okay with massive student debt then you can be successful without maintaining much social media presence. Many of the top illustrators have minimal online presence, often just a website, and any social media is not super active. Companies don't comb through social media when they are looking to commission an illustrator, they contact an agency that represents many artists. But you likely won't get represented by an agency without an art degree. There are other paths to being a successful artist too. Like the gallery scene, though you won't get anywhere in that scene with "pretty" art like is popular online.

@@kalla6674 This, thank you. There is no need to have social media presence to be successful as artist but if social media is where you want to be successful, you need to understand how social media works, just like you need to understand what skills are needed to work at companies or how many art pieces and what quality you need to produce for gallery to want to work with you. I am scared how easily people get blinded by social media numbers and start to think they have no way to succeed in the art career because of them.

    • @kalla6674

@@amalathisdreaming yeah there's a problem where the loudest artist voices online are inevitably those which are full time art influencers for lack of a better term. They make money through youtube, merch, and patreon mainly. That's fine its a valid path if you like engaging with an audience and being very active on social media. But if that doesn't appeal to you don't do that! There are so many other paths aside from even the two I mentioned and not all require art school. Some artists do well with no degree working more locally doing commissions for small businesses and selling at art/craft fairs. There's also a lot of negativity about art school online recently, some justified, it is expensive (I recommend doing a few years of community college get credits for foundation art classes and liberal arts requirements then transfer), but a lot of it isn't. I'm one year into an illustration degree at MICA and despite massive student debt I do not regret it one bit, the experience so far has been priceless and far better than anything online. You don't have to be college age to get into art school too, I got accepted at 24 and know students in their 30s. I always hated social media and could never keep an account active for long whether for art or other stuff, so I was so happy when my teachers told me not to bother with it. Being able to avoid it for me is worth the cost of attendance alone. It's misleading that there's a lot of videos about how some art influencer makes x money without art school and basically making it sound like art school is a pointless waste of money. Not everyone wants to or can be a successful influencer.
Note that none of this is a criticism of Sara and this is a great video for those wanting to follow a similar path to her! Just trying to add some much needed nuance.

@@kalla6674 You're very right on this point. However, I graduated with an art degree and have not found any full time jobs since graduating. Art degrees don't guarantee a proper education, and they also don't guarantee a job. As an illustrator or designer, I've found that a portfolio is much more important than a degree when working on a contracting basis, i.e. illustrating a book. If you're looking to be a full time designer in a marketing department of a corporate job, a degree is useful to get an employer's attention. There are many legitimate ways to make your living as an artist, but I have the opportunity to draw what I like and work from home because of social media. I don't care that I only make "pretty art". I'm grateful for this opportunity and want to help other artists who are in the same position.

    • @kalla6674
      @kalla6674 2 роки тому +38

@@SaraTepes You are right a portfolio matters more than a degree but at least at my school the illustration major is entirely about building an appealing portfolio and all professors are experienced illustrators who know what companies are looking for and assignments are geared towards that. My school boosts a very high hiring rate. Of course there is no guarantee and art school isn't suited for everyone!
Your way of doing things is perfectly valid and I love your art personally and this video is good advice for people that are interested in following a similar path to you! But just like with art school there's no guarantee and it's not suited to everyone, so I just want people to know there are alternatives, which it can be hard to see online.
Edit: thanks for hearting my comment btw ❤

Everyone saying that people only care about likes and follows, yada yada, need to realize that growing your social media presence isn't about the gratification of getting likes/follows. For a lot of artists, it means making a living. It's the difference between going hungry and being able to afford a comfortable (not lavish by any means) life. Like, thank you, Sara for taking the time out to HELP other artists.

That's is another point what won't work. When you do or grow something for making just money out of that people aren't interested. I do feel the sense of what social media started or were used before just dissappeared. You use social media for sharing with others and to contact. Social media doesn't provide you a job. It's a tool you can use. Business works completely differently and people aren't smart when they make themselves dependent on social media.

If I could put my two cents in, the only thing that I'd mention is the small observation that followers gained from reels do not usually engage with your other content, like photo posts - they'll continue to only be pushed content that you make in the form of reels by IG. This is just an observation that I'm seeing with my account and across others, because a mass influx in followers from reels hardly ever translate to an increase in likes on posts.

Guys remember, she was asked by her followers for advice on how to grow an account, and these are honestly solid tips. Of course, make sure you’re not getting too caught up in the numbers and stay true to who you are as an artist, but if you’re trying to grow an account and turn it into a career, then it’s important to grow your following, visibility, and engagement, and sometimes you just have to feed the algorithm in order to make a living. As someone who has never been able to reach 1000 followers for five years, these tips are so helpful. I know that there’s a group of people out there who would be interested in my work, but if my posts aren’t being seen by the public that group of people are never going to find me. I’m determined to have an art career, and learning the ropes of social media and how to create effective posts is part of that career. You don’t have to take her advice, but I do think there’s many who can benefit from this. Young artists, a bit of advice for you is to not forget to focus on working on your fundamental art skills! That’s the biggest tip I wish someone had given me when I first started drawing.

    • @LaurenNicoleGlenn
      @LaurenNicoleGlenn Рік тому +8

@Nanita S yeah, it’s telling me that I need to work harder 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s hard building a following, and it’s not for the faint of heart. But sometimes, you just get unlucky and your content isn’t seen no matter how hard you try. I know someone who just hit 12K this year after being below 5000 for 8 years. It takes time, and sometimes it only happens because you get lucky. You can be an incredible creator and just not have your work seen. My best friend had 200 followers at the start of last year, and her work was incredible. She managed to go viral and now has 80K. The numbers do not always match the quality of your work.

Summary for my future self in car I forget
1 think of the kind of content you want to make. Think of stuff you want to post constantly (full illustrations everyday is not realistic)
2 post regularly (reels for your followers and new audience)
    3 plan shots and transitions
4 one day per week set two to three ours to make reels
5 relatable and funny content does well with trending audio
6 before and after (sketch vs final)
7 inspirational content (your art before and now) a art journey
    8 edit on ig reels/ capcut/ final cut/ etc
9 save trending audios to use later
10 hashtags (5 is ok under a comment)
11 wait until next day to reply comments and like comments

Art reels is definitely a growing factor but I didn’t find it sustainable for me if the “followers” gained from reels didn’t interact with my actual posts which wouldn’t help in the long run if I wanted to open commissions in the future.. The algorithm for ig confuses me a lot, since followers doesn’t always equal the exposure an art post it gets and it honestly feels like a luck game :’) I’m trying to put more focus on improving my art practice but being an artist is a struggle

I just wanna say thank you Sara for taking the time to make this video and I want to explain to anyone that might be feeling overwhelmed by the state of online art, do research and find a platform (or platforms) that works for you and put your all into it. You don’t have to juggle all of them and you don’t have to follow the crowd. Before watching Sara’s video I know for a fact that IG is not where I want to put my energy full/part time but after watching Kelsey Rodriguez’s video about making UA-cam content, I knew that UA-cam is the platform for me (in the near future, no videos yet). I aim to juggle Twitter, UA-cam and Ko-Fi and that is sustainable for me. While I understand the dismay of art being a numbers game, it’s how it’s always been and now with the popularity of social media it’s easier to make a living as artist because the numbers game is better than it was before it was invented. Take some time, use the platforms, do research on what works best and see if it works for you. What I’m about say might sound harsh but understand that I say it with nothing but compassion, if it’s too much work and you don’t enjoy it maybe an art career is not the best for you, especially if it feels like it’s ruining your enjoyment of making art. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying art as hobby, maybe you’d prefer making money doing something else that brings you joy and fulfillment. Be kind to yourself, take your time and do as much introspection as you need and if you still want to make it work, take some time, make a plan of what you’d like a to achieve and work towards it.

This was a much needed video. For the past year I been very frustrated with Instagram and with the recent changes it has became even worse but what is needed is changing the strategy for Instagram as much as I don't like reels your explanation makes it seem much easier.

These ideas are so life saver for me. I am doing art on everything except instagram reels. On insta reels I just have been posting dog videos, and I haven't been filming any lately because it feels like I am taking away time and attention from my dog that I usually would give her. I know to post that often, but I could not figure out for the life of me how to make my art sustainable reel content. I feel very relieved to know these types of contents I can make. I will be implementing these ideas very soon. Thank you

Thank you for your comment at the end about anxiety when posting. I don't want anyone to feel that but at the same time it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who does. I think using Tumblr in the past and watching meaningful engagement with art in general go down the drain on that platform made me develop a really unhealthy relationship with posting art on social media. It got to the point where I could be proud of a piece but if it only got a pile of soulless "likes" and a couple blank reblogs after a day or so, I would start to hate the art. So I just stopped posting altogether and now the thought of trying to do this seriously so I can quit my job one day is....a lot 😬
But even your little side note about it has helped me put things in perspective again so thank you for that, and for all your good advice!

Great video. Super clear, actionable tips that I'll definitely be incorporating into my routine. Very dope, thank you! That being said, I wish I was banging out drawings and portraits in 6-10 hrs...The portrait I just finished took over 30. Not going to be fun boiling all that video down to a 5 second clip(or multiple 5 second clips) to appease the microscopic attention spans on the masses🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦‍♂ That thought alone makes me not want to post at all, incredibly frustrating. But I'm hoping if I apply some of your tips, posting DURING the process, rather than all at the end, will make things slightly easier. Thanks, again🙏💯

there's a lot of conversation about the relevance of social media and art school. All I need to say we live in a privileged time for artists. There are many resources available...the problem is there's also a lot of competition. Social Media is only one path, and there are various. One only needs to play to the tune of various pathways. Just as there are many different kinds of art forms, so do different ways of making money from them. Social Media is the glamour media. Everyone knows about it and wants to be It. Art degree isn't necessary, but in a good school you have a network of professionals and future professionals that no one else lacks. Good luck dear artists and thank you Sara for the video. Also, one thing that helps Sara, is the mileage and that she is a good-looking woman. Whatever assets you have, use them.

The video has given me some good ideas on how to diversify my content as well as maximize how much content I can get out of each drawing session. The main issue I have currently is finding what to post daily as well as posting consistently as IG only recently within the last year or so properly allowed you to upload from desktop and while you can upload videos, you can't upload reels specifically.
Of course, the current state of art is... I suppose you can say-- depressing-- but the reality is that while what you have to do has changed, it's possible the state of art has "always" been this way and the old masters-- many of them had to get someone to in essense pay to fund their art... not quite unlike patreon or osocial media like today.
While the video may not apply to everyone, they're still important tips to just keep in the back of your mind because the algoritm is a machine. Yes, you need to get lucky but it isn't *just* that. And there are ways of growing your platform while also still kinda feeding the algorithm. It doesn't have to be one or the other and it isn't realistic or fair to say that the algorithm of social media is "just getting lucky". While I do have my criticisms towards the idea of people drawing for clicks, likes, views, etc. because that can often lead to burn out, there's a difference between feeling *validated* or *only* going for the engagement and not creating anything that you genuinely enjoy versus growing your platform *while* creating the things that you love. The reality is that if you want to make a living as an artist, you need to grow your platform of choice and you need to learn *how* and not just rely on "being lucky". Yes, there are artists who've maintained minimal social media presence but for many it was after they had grown beyond needing it or they were able to get their start working for companies, doing freelance, etc. and their income stream doesn't necessarily have to revolve around brand deals, sponserships, commissions, etc.

This is really helpful and has me more motivated to create reels knowing what the algorithm wants from me and what I might actually see growth from! I felt so validated when you said you'd been losing followers before doing reels because I'm constantly losing followers and its so frustrating! Even when getting new followers my overall numbers were going down and I felt stuck. I've got a burst of inspiration to actually put a plan together to succeed again on insta thanks to you! Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaank youuu for speaking so much 😂😂
