  • Before talking about iFixit, Apple, and UA-cam spam comments, Marques and Andrew dig into some EV news. First, they talk about the hype of the new EV Delorean that was teased before getting into some of the new Lexus teasers as well. Electric cars, UA-cam, and gadgets. Just your average episode of Waveform!
Plus, there's more trivia! Hope you're well-versed on your tech history because these are a little more difficult.

I'm glad you guys are getting more into car content but I have a few criticisms of your car discussion.
    1. As said in other comments, having a fun or top 5 drivers car does not mean just having an insane 0-60 sec car. The Porsche taycan is the perfect EV example. It doesn't have the best 0-60 sec but it's a great driver's car. Driving is much more than pure acceleration
    2. The discussion on below 2sec 0-60 is weird because there are two cars currently that can do that: the plaid and Rimac Nevera. Even though both do a bit of cheating to do that (1foot of rollout removed). Toyota also didn't say the price they're targeting so they can just do the same thing Rimac and Tesla did. I think you guys give Tesla way too much credit and assume other car makers are just incompetent or Tesla is revolutionary and doing things other people can't. Toyota if they wanted to can make a car like that in under 3 years under low volume and in 5 years with decent volume. Tesla isn't special. They just had the insight to invest in electric early.
    3. Other car companies such as Nio are making amazing progress with battery tech. I know you guys are only focused on US based vehicles but if you're into EV tech, I'm hoping you'd be willing to look at alternatives that are there around the world.

Opening the Gigafactory in Austin was a major event. It featured engineering and manufacturing and showed everyone that there are amazing careers in these fields. It's important to show people who are going to enter the job market in the next several years that they can learn a skillset which is valued and celebrated. I gotta gripe, there is more to a cars performance than its acceleration. Yes, it’s very important but, there are many other important things not considered. One is the lateral acceleration, a 5000lb car cannot without some sort of extreme aero, out handle a 2500lb car with the same tires. Another is the geometry of the suspension and the steering mechanism. Bad geometry can be a ruinous thing to a car, and not being able to feel the road can create a feeling of disconnect. If you want to see a real example of a good company with fantastic cars, look a Koenigsegg. All in all though, love the podcast.

I feel like they’re going for driving dynamics and fun rather than speed. The average Lexus car might not be quite as nice as the average BMW or Mercedes, but they ARE great cars, and the big win for Lexus is the longevity of their cars. They're nicer cars, but you see SO many older ones on the road, which is a very good proof of how long-lasting they are built. Edit: And before morons start commenting, no the new cars are still fine, and still built to last, all new things are somehow magically worse than older things, nor are older things just inherently "better built". @@vp5429 Yeah it's technically not the original company. DeLorean Motor Company founded by John DeLorean went defunct in 1982. A guy named Stephen Wynne who at the time was a British mechanic moved to the US and opened a repair shop where he focused on repairing British and French cars. People with DeLoreans who needed repairs started going to him once the DeLorean Motor Company went out of business. He bought a warehouse with leftover DeLorean parts and would service the cars with those. He then acquired the rights to the DeLorean Motor Company's name, logo, and intellectual property and made himself the CEO and resurrected the company in 1995. And that's the company that's still going now that announced this new EV DeLorean. Not necessarily just a random billionaire. More like a pro mechanic and DeLorean enthusiast with money and passion for the brand. With the way the original company went under (there's a nice documentary on Netflix about it), getting the rights probably wasn't as expensive as you think and most proper wealthy people weren't interested in it at the time.

A couple of thoughts on the Toyota/Lexus topic that didn’t seem to be clear. Toyota is now very racing focused all the way from the top with the current ceo being a racer himself. While they didn’t put out very many performance cars in the last few years that is rapidly changing. There’s a great Donut media video on the topic. I would argue that they are more capable of making a high performance EV at this point than Tesla is. Perhaps by a big margin.
Secondly 0-60 times aren’t hugely important in the drivers car world. They get touted heavily in EV marketing because it’s a natural strength and it’s relatively easy to get that number low. The handling, and overall feel of driving the car is much harder to nail and has a larger impact on the overall experience.
I agree these EVs are getting very quick and will only get quicker but they are not yet the fastest cars in the world.

Well, John Delorean is dead, and the company folded forever ago. DMC has always been the company ( delorean motor company ) and the original model was called the DMC-1 iirc.
New company with the name DMC and the rights to everything, I’m guessing. Define new company trading on the nostalgia- but a good strategy to get your EV company off the ground.

the original car was just called the Delorean. In pre-production it was given the code DMC 12 as already stated by Esa but nowhere in their marketing material was it called that. To call it the DMC 12 is like calling a 1st gen RX-7 an X-605, the code Mazda used for it in pre production. In production it was given a chassis code of P642, but rotorheads call them SA or FB and none of these are related to the car's actual name or was sold by, RX-7.

DMC-12! That’s right. Good points. A kids dad in my neighborhood had one when I was growing up, I was amazed and infatuated like anyone who saw BttF. Was sad to learn later how crappy they actually were and could barely crest 85MPH downhill pedal to the floor 😄

It's an interesting possibility that most cars could gain the ability to accelerate to 0 to 60 in a couple seconds. I wonder if that becomes a safety issue and if it might spark an *acceleration* limit.

The original DeLorean Motor Company went bankrupt in 1982. The founder was caught up in a drug trafficking sting. A new company called DeLorean Motor Company was founded in 1995 in Texas, by someone unrelated to the original company, and shortly acquired the remaining inventory of the old DMC company.

This start up prob had Angel investors lined up at the door… if the 1st car is executed to near perfection, the company will be able to go about a business model similar to Tesla..
If the car is a proto-type in Aug, expect it to ship in 2024-2025

The world doesn’t need everyone driving a 3sec to 60 EV. People cannot handle our current cars, we have tens of thousands of deaths a year with slow gas vehicles. We need more safety systems, long range and higher efficiency but the real change will be peoples mindset on what cars are for, and unfortunately in the US that is highly unlikely to change even in multiple decades.

There were a number of Deloreans in my area when they were first made. Ungainly handling, poor engine and actually blah for the time. The only notable thing about it (and it wasn't the doors) was that you could fry an egg on the stainless steel body panels after an hour parked in the summer sunlight.
Also, they couldn't finish stainless steel with automobile paint in the early eighties and electroplating only became industrially commercial in the late 80s (and originally could only do black - Toro passed until they figured out how to do red). So you were stuck with a bland, hot-to-the-touch car.

Then, some other bots come and say how much they earned after working with that advisor while more and more of them join the fuss. I think it is obvious that they are bots, but be careful everyone
