- This week we have another long-form episode! David got a little obsessed with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) a few months ago and spent hours and hours researching and talking to experts so that he can try to explain it here on the podcast for Marques and Andrew. This one is a little dense but if you're even remotely interested in the mysteries of our universe this one is for you. David explains why the JWST is such a big deal and what we hope to discover once it begins sending back pictures.

Why we don't have Dave for more science oriented podcasts like these. Loved it. Shoutout to Dave !
Yeah I know the research takes forever but this is the perfect sort of content for the podcast imo
need more of these
take months bro to gather information, authenticate, interview etc. lot of hardwork
Totally!!!!
I like how Marques really gets excited while he talks about these things.
neat.
Who couldn’t? The more you research into it the more exciting it is
And he’s pretty informed too
Fun fact: james webb retired after being briefed about the first manned Apollo mission

Just 1 correction. Frequency is not the same as how many photons are hitting you per second. For light, when you talk about frequency, you refer to the flipping of its electro-magnetic field. In the interview, the explanation he gave with light buckets, he was talking about intensity. The reason we need very big telescope is because a wavefront travelling through large distance, even for a very coherent emitter gets spread over time. You can think of this as mapping the surface of sphere onto a bigger sphere. The total quantity of emission stays the same but is now distributed over a much larger area.. The reason we need these big telescopes is to increase our probability of capturing these radiations since they are so much spread out. A pool will collect much more water than a bucket, i.e., the chances of rain drops hitting the pool is much higher because of its larger surface area.
Otherwise, great video :)
Thanks for writing this, it saves me a bit of time, lol. I believe that he got the points confused when discussing the infrared detector. He was likely told that infrared detectors do not work as well as visible ones because of the lower energy of infrared photons - this is true, it just has nothing to do with the number of photons, it's e=hv. This means that infrared detectors either have to be much larger or would have to amplify their signal a certain amount just to give the same reading a visible detector would. This is why infrared detectors are extremely expensive relative to visible detectors.
You can study Einstein light oriented research
Wrong ans but ok
@@SaumyakantaSahoo ok maybe I am wrong. please correct us so we know what's wrong and what's true.
listened to it this morning on my run. my run shifted to a walk. then i just sat on a bench, in a park, and listened. best episode BY FAR. so much better than Apple M1 chips or Apple new iPhone color or whatever
I love the production on this episode omg all the voices coming over you guys talking giving me Interstellar/sci-fi movies vibes. this is amazingggg
I agree
Congratulations to David for explaining complicated concepts in a clear way. Thank you Guys 😇
Hands down one of the most different topic, informative, thought provoking episodes I've seen EVER!
So well edited and curated. There was never a moment where I felt like I was being talked to like a dullard.
Inspired me to do my own research which is what I always watch content to make me do.
This was hands down one of your best videos, huge congrats to David for all his research and explanations! I feel like I could sit and talk science with him for hours and never get tired.
My Friday morning missed you guys, but my Friday afternoon say's hello!
Yea... How smart Marques is underrated
He knows something about everything.
This was an incredible episode. I absolutely love space and all sorts of stuff related to it so this one was great for me, would love to see you guys talk more about space and in general about space achievements. Can't wait for that podcast in June/July about the first photos of the jwst!!
Hands down the best podcast video so far.
This production is amazing everything are now clear 🙌
I love the short video clip expert explanation between conversations ❤
You can tell just how much effort David put into the research and how proud he was to edit this episode a bit more "podcast-style." And it's awesome.
Loved this episode. I think you guys should implement a science section to each podcast for updates in the world of groundbreaking scientific discoveries. There's a ton of stuff being researched that is relevant to consumer electronics. Bring on Veritasium or Smarter Everyday!
I sometimes speed through podcasts but i sat down and heard every bit very carefully...just like taking a class! I just loved this episode, so much to learn!
This is the best WVFRM Podcast episode I've listened to yet! - Love the topic!
These scientific explainer videos are so amazing. And it's awesome to see the team diving into these science nerdy stuff!
SUPER cool episode. Marques is really nerdy, love it. David explains things very nicely. Andrew always surprises me with his questions and comments :D
David did such a great job with his research
Fantastic coverage of the JWST! Thank you for the video - it's excellent. Well done.
This was a really good one. I think the extra edits for interviews and explanations worked really well.
Great episode. Well done to the whole team and especially David.
Really interesting video ! Been waiting for a super nerdy episode!
DAVID IS BACK 🔥
Really appreciate the amount of work you all put into this episode
I love these long episodes. I wish you guys would do a long one once a month. Or whatever works for your schedule. Maybe every other month if need be and always with more David talking more nerdy stuff. I just want more. mORe!
Amazing episode... Mesmerizing! Can't wait to see the first shots
I love how Marques get so excited about ANY space fact.
I remember learning about this in my astronomy class in college. It’s super exciting to see it finally launch and take to the cosmos. I feel attached to the community of it as well. Idk it’s like our little friend!
Watching this for the first time after a year, but this is one of my fav waveform podcast episodes! well done guys!
Loved this fun episode. Really fascinating stuff to come. Thank you so much guys!
Loved the super nerdy podcast, David just killed it with this one!!
best episode ever
i have watched this 3 times already and i still want to watch it again
This was an awesome episode, would love to see David on the podcast more often!
This is one of my favorite episodes in the podcast. Keep it up!
As someone that’s been quite a bit into JWST for a while, I love that it has had a whole episode dedicated to it.
For people looking to learn a bit more about ti, I strongly recommend watching Smarter Every Day’s video on it.
Keep up the amazing work 🙌🏻
I'm so happy you guys did this! My favorite 2 youtubers are MKBHD and Everyday Astronaut, so this was the collab I was hoping we would someday see!
You guys should interview Tim on another episode
Absolutely LOVED this vidcast. FANTASTIC!!
I am LOVING this episode, so interesting!!
This is the best episode of the podcast.
Definitely my favorite episode. Great stuff!
this podcast was soooo good that I had to hop onto UA-cam to watch the video
Incredible episode and information guys! Thank you!
I'm surprised I understood so much. Thanks guys for all the research.
my weekly dose for tech news and stuff, keep going guys and more pawer!
David was awesome.
He was pretty much spot on.
All this stuff was waaay beyond my understanding but so interesting to listen to. The possibilities that can come from all the new discoveries is exciting to think of.
Best episode of this podcast, surely.
This episode was really interesting, I know nothing about space and telescopes. I was captivated 😮
this is definitely my favorite episode of the show
I had already watched so many videos about JWST that I didn't hear any new thing but I found this an insanely cool episode and enjoyed it tremendously. The way David explains is such that I picture him as a really cool teacher and he had two great students 😉🙏🏻
wow. great work team, this is awesome
So much nerdy goodness! LOVE IT!!!
Great that you guys took the time to explain it all, and not try to push it all in 10 minutes or so. I am ready for the next one
Great episode! Shout out to Dave! Making really complicated subject matter entertaining and accessible. If I had ideas of what math was capable of uncovering when I was a kid, I would have tried a lot harder to be good at it. Hopefully this inspires some young fans to search the stars
This episode was so cool!!! Love it!!
I can never forgive you for scaring me with that bee noise… I’m not even really scared of bees but I jumped at the sound 😅
I realy liked this podcast! Keep up the great work 👍
Cheers from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
SICK episode. more like this plz
Very interesting! Need more like this.
David did a really great job explaining everything!
Excellent episode by all 👏👏
Pls make more apace, science related podcasts. This one was really nice, top notch
I love this long form deep dive into the jwst.
As a space nerd,
I really liked, enjoyed and appreciated this.
I enjoy this very much. The more people exposed to and understand the science of the day the harder it is for disinformation to spread in my opinion. So making these topics easily accessable and interesting is a wonderful thing.
This episode just blew my mind, I think I went crazy trying to understand for a few mins.😮
Ive been having a lot of these topic on my timeline but its just repetitive. Loving the detailed episode 🙌
MKBHD This is the best science Podcast Ever listened great job
awesome well up for this one dudes thanks!
What a fantastic episode!
this is so interesting that i have seen this episode more than 5 times
More science! Great episode!!
Keep up the content with astrono my , good work !!!
Currently in organic chemistry 2, took physics 1 & 2, inorganic chem 1 & 2, biology 1 & 2, and taking biochem next semester… so I understand all of this… it’s super fascinating
7pm. very good timing
Watching all you young people talk so excitedly about this gives me hope for this world, thank you!
If I remember rightly that the Hubble deep field photo is a selection of the hidden behind a 5p piece (1/2 inch diameter) held up to the sky at arms length so a tiny tiny tiny spot in the sky shows thousands of stars and galaxies - the more you think about it the more unimaginable it gets, crazy crazy stuff
I really loved this episode 👍👍
Dope episode!!!
Amazing episode! More scientific content please
I just remember Hank's video amd excitement about this and this is like a extra long version on how exciting this issssssss ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is why I so wanna learn physics but my brain is still finding it hard 😢 But this kinda does help me understand it better so I can continue reading the book "The End of the Universe astrophysically speaking" ❤
Not everyone is genius right 😆,you will succeed good luck 😊
The fact that Giordano Bruno got a shout out in this video is amazing.
after the last episode I was kinda bummed thinking the pod was loosing its watchability but this episode is great!
Loved seeing Tim in this!
The best episode! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fue muy interesante y muy bien explicado, espero que hagan más episodios asi. Quizas sobre los robers
Finally you guys are talking abou JWST 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Let's go babe...
I wish i could hangout with David and Marques and just talk about space stuff.
Awesome topic!
Thank you for this
Nerds nerding out, love it. This was a much needed episode. Humanity is amazing and our curiosity is endless. This was a whole lot of fun
New favorite episode ❤️
Yes, more david mayne!!
Best episod! Period
I love David!
But hands down one of the best episodes of waveform. This and Starlink
Great show!
By the way NASA used to be NACA National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics. In 1958 it was changed to NASA to include space exploration and keep up with the USSR
I would love for a full episode/interview with you guys and Tim Dodd.
