Hey Pikasprey! A little late but I thought I'd say it anyway. It seems GameFreak WAS aware that trading between foreign copies of Pokemon would cause data corruption but they didn't actually set any flags within the game to prevent it! I was flipping through the manual for the original Pokemon Silver out of boredom (yes, I have a genuine copy, thanks to my roommate hording stuff and later giving it away). On the page that details the trading sequence, it specifically states, "Also, please do not attempt to trade or battle with a foreign version of Pokemon or your data will be corrupted." So they definitely knew of the game breaking bug but I guess they thought it would be next to impossible for foreign copies to interact. Then they stuck a note in the manual, hoping that would keep it from happening. Certainly not the first time that's happened and likely not the last. Rather interesting, don't you think?
Well battling people internationally or having two people with having the same game but a different version isn't very common back in 1998 compared today. So I'll give them a pass on this one
You should put a Shiny Mewtwo or whatever Pokemon with a very very high value in the day care and sell the soft locked copy to someone, telling him that if he escapes he will be able to get this ultra rare Pokemon.
You see, this is actually forbidden due to the fact that both the Gameboy Color and our Japanese copy of Pokémon Crystal are made out of Nintendium. What this means is that they will not burn up in the magma, and instead the game will still be playable.

I appreciate adding the english version on the side and not just the Japanese, extra work that you don’t get much from but makes the viewing better. Keep it up!
My first video game ever was the original English release of Pokemon Blue on the Gameboy color. I'll have you know I didn't even have the knowledge of how to leave the house because my young mind couldn't comprehend what the 2D representation of a door was supposed to look like. I spent hours wandering around that room looking for an exit that was right in front of me. My parents had to call my older cousin to stop by and help me solve the puzzle. Of course, after seeing the solution I never had any more trouble with the franchise but that first experience haunts me to this day.
Wow I thought I was the only one. I literally broke down in tears as a 5 year old because I couldn’t figure out how to get out of the house. My dad eventually figured it out for me but man, what a way to start my Pokémon adventure.
Pikasprey: torturing people for 2/3 of the year by making them pick berries on a nearly 20 year old game in a language people definitely dont understand Truly a mad genius
@@ColonolNutty Nope. At worst, you would only need to wait an additional day. In attempting this softlock pick, one will more than likely open your game, boot it up, pick a berry, and save and quit. Repeat that 239 times for 240 berries worth 1200 pokedollars. If you rush off to buy an ultra ball to catch something and forget to save, you'll be able to power off the console without saving and be brought back to the last time you saved, i.e. the day you picked your 239th berry.
When he said, "to give you an idea of how long 240 days is..." I immediately thought he was going to say he started working on this video at (insert date), implying that he did this. Sounds like a Pikasprey thing to do.
Actually this sounds like something you'd hear on John Oliver. 240 days of picking berries is a long ass time. ...And I know this... because... we've actually done it.
melehu I think you will find a replacement shiny within the minimum of 240 days, if you restart right away. Also, if it’s shiny you still have to trade it, and as we saw, trading looks incredibly annoying.
I'm asking for a reason why you would trade it, I never said anything about keeping it. Can you explain the situation in which you would need to trade it?
Imagine being dedicated enough to get that berry every day for 239 days, only to boot it up on the 240th day and find that the internal battery has run dry.
Part of me wants to see about drawing or commissioning art based off these softlocks. Kris in Ethan's clothes, with a bag stuffed with Berries as they make their way to the League with their trusty Caterpie... makes for a cozy image, I'd wager.
I've broken the lock. In generation 2 games you can duplicate Pokemon an unlimited number of times. Just give the berry to the Caterpie and give it the ice berry. Here's how you do the glitch, save in front of a PC, then deposit a Pokemon, click change box, when it says, "SAVING DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER", turn off the power. Turn the game back on and you have the Pokemon in your PC and the other in your party, both have the same held item. You can do this an infinite number of times, so really, you only need 1 ice berry.

@@Definitely_a_Fox If you miss a day, the only consequence is that the schedule is just put back by one day. while resetting that early on does not seem insignificant, I can totally see someone grinding that for fun, before getting locked out and having to reset. Imagine owning the game, being so eager and happy you just grind for hours straight, and encounter this Oof
Does that work in the English version? I remember being trapped as a kid and I had Blastoise. I had to reset the game despite I did not want to since I had a Blastoise but I really saw no other choice. This would explain a lot.
Speaking of softlocks that you can do after beating the Champion, I'd really like it if you talk about that famous one caused by the Meister's trade in Gen 4. He wants a Finneon for his Magikarp. You need a Finneon with Surf (the move is needed to reach him), no fishing rods (Finneon requires a Good Rod, so get your Finneon from another game), nothing else that can learn Surf, nothing that has Teleport or can learn Fly, no Rare Candies, and no Poké Balls. Do the trade, save your game, and now you've just trapped yourself on that island in Route 226. It's a super obvious softlock and I'm personally still shocked that Game Freak let this slip through the cracks. You don't even need to get rid of your money or other items like practically every other softlock here.
That reminds me random how I soft locked myself in Twilight Princess when I was a kid. I played TP and made a "3-hearts no shield"-run. The problem is, when the wolf ghost wants to teach you the shield-attack, you are stuck in that realm forever. There is no way out.
So what im getting here is i should set this up, exactly as described in the video, but include a shiny pokemon in the day care. Tell the person I give the cartridge to this, and then they have to go 240 days to get the shiny. They go to the day care and collect: a shiny caterpie. And then, as soon as they try and trade it out, the game corrupts. Lovely

Oh God that is so adorable

@@FrostBitttn 240 days ago.

"Also, if it's shiny you still have to trade it"
Why would you need to trade it?

MarioManTj so you would keep a shiny caterpie on a game without any good Pokémon, almost no money, and no items?

I've broken the lock. In generation 2 games you can duplicate Pokemon an unlimited number of times. Just give the berry to the Caterpie and give it the ice berry. Here's how you do the glitch, save in front of a PC, then deposit a Pokemon, click change box, when it says, "SAVING DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER", turn off the power. Turn the game back on and you have the Pokemon in your PC and the other in your party, both have the same held item. You can do this an infinite number of times, so really, you only need 1 ice berry.
