Something I forgot to mention at the end: If you get out of Pallet Town without taking a starter, your rival will have Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard in all of his battles. By default, the game apparently assumes you've chosen Bulbasaur before you've actually made a choice. Also, if you beat the champion fight, go back and finally take a starter (Charmander/Squirtle), your rival's party will change if you go back to the final battle again.

Crystal_ found the reason. Here's a quick summary : When FIGHT is selected, the game parses all four PP slots, and if they are all zero, uses Struggle. Normally, an empty move's PP slot is zero, but we will see that there can be an edge case... The active Pokémon is copied to a region of memory (so the game can use this instead having to constantly modify party data). For things such as HP, status, and PP, the game needs to also update the party data. There is one exception to this : when a Pokémon is under Transform, the party data must not be updated. For example, PP is not subtracted from the party data. When Mirror Move (or Metronome) is used, the game will decrement the PP of Mirror Move twice (once when it's actually used, and once when the move it represents is used). Thus, the game increments the PP of Mirror Move once, to compensate. All of these make sense -- it's how the game works. But here's the catch : the "PP increment" function doesn't check for the Transformed status ! Here's how to trigger the glitch : - Have any Pokémon with Transform (typically Ditto, but also Mew, or a Pokémon with Metronome) - Face against a Pokémon knowing Mirror Move or Metronome - Transform into the Pokémon with Mirror Move; - Use the move; - The game will decrement Mirror Move's PP (but it won't because Transform); - (If the move fails, nothing else happens); - The game will increment Mirror Move's PP (thus, it will increment the PP in the corresponding slot); - The game will decrement Mirror Move's PP (but it won't because Transform) Thus, the game increments a move's PP in the Pokémon's data. If the move is present, then it will just have incremented it, no biggie. If it's not, this creates a slot that is empty, but with non-zero PP ! Thus, the game fails to use Struggle. -- D̲i̲s̲a̲b̲l̲e̲ Disable first checks if there is a slot with non-zero PP, and if this fails, misses. With a Struggle-less Pokémon, this will always succeed, because of the glitched slot. Then, Disable will attempt to pick a slot which must have a move AND non-zero PP. Assuming Transform has 0 PP, the game will never find such a slot (since the only slot with non-zero PP has no move). Bam, infinite loop, and softlock.

The reason the glitch that you couldn't use struggle happened is do to a bug with transform where if the pokemon you transform into knows mirror move or metronome, using it will cause the ACTUAL move that is in that slot (in this case transform) to decrease by 1. This caused it to become -1, meaning that you have no PP but you the game only checks for 0 PP and not a negative value, meaning that you cannot use struggle. The only way to fix this glitch is to use the metronome or mirror move 256 times so it overflows back to 0.
How possible is it that struggle has an unseen amount of uses, set at max value, being 255. Meaning Struggle can only be used 255 times. Since it is not a listed move, it's possible that nothing that restores PP will restore it.
"In Generation I, a glitch can occur making it impossible for a Pokémon to use Struggle if it has previously used Transform followed by either Metronome or Mirror Move. This renders the Pokémon completely unable to battle until its PP is restored." -Bulbapedia.
Crystal_ did a video about this specific glitch 2 days before this video was posted. It will answer your question. ua-cam.com/video/_c7tQkSyz7E/v-deo.html TL;DR: To avoid the struggle glitch, don't use Mirror Move or Metronome while transformed.
On one hand, the Forget Struggle glitch made this run much more interesting, because it really does keep it in line with the spirit of a Ditto Run. On the other, struggle might have helped reduce the luck factor required
no body In one of the games, the Pokédex description for Ditto says they don’t get along well with other dittos. So this comment isn’t far from the truth
Hey, someone pointed me to this. The reason you couldn't use Struggle seems to be because you had in moveslot 2-4 an empty move but a non-0 PP value. This explains why Struggle wasn't automatically used and also why Disable froze in the next turn; you had a move with non-0 PP so it didn't miss, but you didn't have a non-00 move with non-0 PP, so it entered an infinite loop. This most likely occurred because the PPs after transform were saved to the party data during a battle, when you had moves beyond the first slot. My first guess is that something caused the transformed flag to reset (a trasformed pokemon doesn't update the battle PPs to the party data), or maybe some weird interaction with Disable or another move. Can't tell you much more without knowing the battle(s) right before you experienced the effect though. Edit: Explanation video here for anyone interested: ua-cam.com/video/_c7tQkSyz7E/v-deo.html An obscure interaction with Mirror Move / Metronome that causes an unintended PP increase is the cause.
This makes the most sense to me because every argument I have heard for the underflow glitch doesn’t explain how the Ditto would have access to Struggle again after exhausting all of the transformed Pokémon’s moves. Unless by transforming it completely resets the “Struggle counter”... Sounds like someone smarter than me needs to dive deeper into this. Thanks Pikasprey!
It's the only viable scenario that satisfies the disable freeze (the other one being having no moves at all), and happens to explain Struggle failing to be automatically used too. Now I'm curious what caused another moveslot to get more than 0 PPs, because it's probably something obscure and undocumented.
You know people who eat incredibly spicy food or do dangerous tricks for views on UA-cam? Those people are mere children compared to the torture Pikasprey puts himself through.
Do you ever find something so great, that even months later you find yourself grateful that it exists and that you found it? That's how I feel about this channel. I never knew my life needed videos about softlocking Pokemon games and beating Pokemon games with gimmick Pokemon. Your dedication to these ridiculous and time-consuming setups, and your creativity in solving them, is insane and impressive and much appreciated.
Something funny to note here with the Gary fight. Although Blizzard was changed in later generations to be more in line with Fire Blast and Thunder with higher power but lower accuracy than the normal perfect accuracy moves of those types, in Gen 1 Blizzard actually has 90 accuracy. You got exceptionally lucky against that Blastoise getting two misses in a row, as that only has a 1% for you to survive.
Pikasprey... Oh, poor Pikasprey... I do hope you realize your subscribers are going to force you through this for Every Single Generation Ever Made Hopefully including all the remakes.
it will definitely become impossible at a certain point. I think he got fantastically lucky that there's no mandatory trainer in the game that simply bricks you, lucky crits or not. However with the Struggle strategy it becomes more predictable. Even so, in the later gens Elite 4 and Champion Pokemon are such a high level that you can't just rely on bulldozing through them with nothing but Struggle just because you have a level 100. I guess it speaks to the quality of the earlier games that you can literally go through the entire game mashing A, build up enough of a level advantage and beat the game with even the lowest statted Pokemon using the worst move :P
@@eyecontrol4900 like whenever I see "can you beat x pokemon game with x" it is almost always yes. I like the other challenges he and some others do like, only baby pokemon only traded pokemon no damage etc. But yeah, I stopped watching MDB some time ago cause his videos were getting repetitive, but hey as long as he's having fun with them right?
I think the question is no longer "Can you beat Pokémon with x" but "How hard is it to beat Pokémon with x" (most of the time, there's absurd shit like Spinarak in HGSS, but those are edge cases)
From what I can guess maybe Struggle is programed with PP and when you used it so much from Lavender town to fuchsia city you ended up underflowing it to 0 that's why it ended up saying no moves left there was none for transform or struggle. Maybe just a programming error that nobody in a normal play session would end up triggering/doing.
Listening to this in the background and hearing the complete silence towards a few parts really spooked me, as for a second I thought the video broke when the ditto struggle trick just broke on itself. Impressive video! I tried doing a stupid challenge like this a while ago by leveling up a Spewpa to level 100 and giving it move tutor moves and max EVs in Pokemon X, and then trying to fight the elite four, but I couldn't really get anywhere. I know someone beat Sun/Moon with only a Pyukumuku, but I'd love to see someone try my Spewpa challenge and make it a full game thing, since he has really low stats that never get much higher.
ajddavid452 I think you're thinking of the wrong Pokemon. Spewepa is the evolution of Scatterbug, the basic bug Pokemon you can find starting in Santalune Forest. So it's not version exclusive.

Wow, that's just. Wow. I didn't think it'd be possible, especially knowing how some of the gym leaders use pokemon with moves that aren't very effective against the main gym type. Coupled with 5 pp per move, okayish movesets at the best of times and absolute trash at the worst of times, that strange anti-struggle glitch your Ditto got afflicted with, and the insane amount of luck you had to rely on for more than 1 battle, I truly thought you'd signed yourself up for absolute hell. And yet, color me surprised to see once again you've won against the odds and made it through this absolutely crazy challenge. You're an absolute madman and I'm all about madmen! So, ditto-only Gold/Silver/Crystal, you say? I hope that we see something from that in the foreseeable future, because I'll definitely be here to see how it turns out.

Still one of the most iconic videos on youtube. Basically started the whole Pokemon challenge idea that literally everyone does now. Or atleast made it as popular as it is and set the standard for how the videos are typically done
Honestly surprised the whole challenge run thing wasn't that big until like, 5 years ago outside of nuzlockes. Especially considering "beating the game with like, one overlevelled pokémon" was something pretty much everyone did as a kid.
It's their first game, they're bound to run into some glitches. At least they aren't obvious bugs that anybody could have noticed, unlike certain modern games.
Bulbapedia is aware of the bug: "In Generation I, a glitch could on very rare occasions activate where a Pokémon will not use Struggle when out of PP, depending on what the player is battling at the time; it could either soft lock or freeze the game." Same with Blaine: "In Red and Blue, a rare glitch can occur where he will use a Super Potion on Pokémon he just sent out despite them being at full health."
Some glitching forum said it's from encountering Metronome/Mirror Move. Basically because the game uses 2 PP in programming for Metronome/Mirror Move (once for using Metronome/MM and once for the move copied/randomly used) and then the game's programming will give back 1 PP to compensate for the second PP used for the new move. But since Ditto has Transform and not Metronome/MM it can't give back the PP thus making it loop into having/not having PP.
That makes a whole lot of sense. My first thought when watching the video was that Struggle was in a hidden 5th move slot and had a pp set at 999 or something and that all elixers/pokecenters only refilled the first 4 slots of pp, but that had a lot of assumptions and holes as a theory. MirrorMove/Metronome makes much more sense, especially considering the 2 pokemon Asprey encountered it against.
That's really easy and again only based on luck. Just throw Hyper Ball after Hyper Ball, eventually you get it. Legendary Pokémon catching is seriously lame, because it's just luck based. For legendaries I actually prefer the approach in "Let's Go". There has to be a hard battle, then the catching procedure should begin.
I highly value and appreciate the simplicity of this video. No "fancy", distractive cut-aways and animations like other PokeTubers like to use. No freaking lengthy "Look what I can do with software X"-intros. Great job, PY!
10% chance for the first Blizzard to miss, then another 10% chance for the second one to miss, means that in total, there's only a 1% chance for two Blizzards to miss in a row like that. Amazing that it happened.
Ordinarily it fails when you've only got struggle left. The game softlocked for the same reason he couldn't struggle- he'd accidentally glitched a pp into one of his blank moveslots. Since the game detected he had a move with pp, disable didn't fail... but the pp was assigned to an empty slot, so the game got locked into an infinite loop, staring at that transform, waiting to find the move with pp.
Apparently, the responsible of the glitch was Mirror Move. Due to an error, it consumes two PP per use, and the programmers compensated by making the move recover 1 PP after using it. The problem is, when a Transformed pokemon uses Mirror Move, the PP recovery not only affects Mirror move, but also increases the empty slot's "move" by one PP. That is what triggers the glitch. That theoretically means that if you use Mirror Move exactly 64 times, making sure that all Mirror Moves are used on the same slot, the PP counter of that glitched moveslot will overflow and roll the PP back to zero, allowing you to use Struggle again, in the same way this beta garbage keeps rerolling the Wrap PP back up to 63 when you use Wrap with 0 PP remaining and the opponent switches out.
Harish Varma if ur worried that he “cheated” and had another Pokémon with him, the beginning of the battles show only one poke ball (meaning ditto is the only Pokémon he has)

This video is what got me back into pokemon glitching (and actually, pokemon in general) a few months ago. It's amazing that we're still discovering glitches for games that are 20+ years old
I have a theory on why struggle wouldn't work on ditto anymore. Perhaps the game couldn't be coded in a way that allows Struggle to be a move without PP. So the creators may have slapped a really large hidden PP on the move that somehow doesn't get replenished when visiting a Pokemon center. A neat thing to test would be how many Struggles you could do with the same Pokemon before that game soft locks itself. What do you think? +Pikasprey Yellow
My guess is 256 struggles. I assume the game just sets the 'Struggle' amount to 256 (8-bit limitation), and when you visit a PokeCentre it replenishes your moves PP, but isn't programmed to replenish the PP of Struggle, because it assumes there won't be 256 struggles used by 1 Pokemon. Not replenishing the PP saved a bit or byte of code, so they didn't do it. At that point, the game starts to bug out because the entire game reuses bits of the same code. The PP number for Struggle bugged out, so everything that was based on the PP of Struggle bugged out, and gym leaders started using items without priority, items on underground Pokemon and everything. Old-school code is a ridiculous pile of spaghetti. :P
That reminds me of the Ghandi bug in Civ I where he would be 1 peaceful then gets lowered by 2 because of democracy and ends up being a 256 out of scale of 10 in how warmongering he is.
A quick google reveals the disassembled code of Red/Blue! github.com/pret/pokered/blob/37ded1d150197b3784bc351eeeb0a8d9713c2e35/engine/battle/decrement_pp.asm#L5 I found this line searching the repository for "struggle". Seems that it shouldn't decrement the pp when struggle is used. I'd be surprised if this is the bug cause, and lean more to something in the check for remaining moves pp. github.com/pret/pokered/blob/37ded1d150197b3784bc351eeeb0a8d9713c2e35/engine/battle/core.asm#L2793 Maybe something in this part of the code?
You should watch some Pokemon speedruns. They all use only one or two Pokemon for the entire run. Red: Squirtle for the first gym, then catch Nidoran-M and sweep the rest of the game with Nidoking. Gold: I'm pretty sure Feraligatr is the only Pokemon used in the entire run. Crystal swaps him out for Entei at some point. (I haven't watched a whole Gen 2 run, if you couldn't tell). Emerald: Go through almost the entire game with Swampert, Castform helps a bit in one double battle by Shockwaving a Peliper or something, then before the last gym catch Rayquaza and sweep. Moon: Primarina solos most of the game, Elite 4 is a mix of Primarina and Lunala.
Guild Mostly. Water is an amazing type, and Surf is an amazing move. That said, gens 4 and 5 use Fire starters, with B2W2 switching to Excadrill part of the way through.
"Wasn't the opponent using an item always supposed to have priority?" Guess what, it does not in Gen 1! The AI makes its decision after the player, so it can do stuff like using Full Restores before the end of a turn (unless its PKMN outspeeds) and using a super effective move on your switch. Blaine using Super Potions at full health is just a quirk of his AI specifically, but the other trainers don't do this.
Something I forgot to mention at the end:

Also, if you beat the champion fight, go back and finally take a starter (Charmander/Squirtle), your rival's party will change if you go back to the final battle again.
Makes sense, Bulbasaur is #1. It probably goes by a less-than check.
So, if you were not to pick a starter the oak battle glitch pokemon would be squirtle?
in gen one items were used based on speed

All of these make sense -- it's how the game works. But here's the catch : the "PP increment" function doesn't check for the Transformed status !
Here's how to trigger the glitch :
- Have any Pokémon with Transform (typically Ditto, but also Mew, or a Pokémon with Metronome)

It's funny how you had to struggle a lot more after losing the ability to do so.
I find it funny.
Hehe...jokes!
@WESLEY HUNT So do I. Learn to laugh.
*WAIT THATS ILLEGAL*
@WESLEY HUNT The two aren't mutually exclusive lmao things can be both ironic and funny
-Ender- cool.
How the hell do you know that
Ugandan Knuckles about an hour of research.
-Ender- I would even know how to start that
How possible is it that struggle has an unseen amount of uses, set at max value, being 255.
This renders the Pokémon completely unable to battle until its PP is restored."
-Bulbapedia.

TL;DR: To avoid the struggle glitch, don't use Mirror Move or Metronome while transformed.

Edit: Explanation video here for anyone interested: ua-cam.com/video/_c7tQkSyz7E/v-deo.html
An obscure interaction with Mirror Move / Metronome that causes an unintended PP increase is the cause.
Well Pikasprey said around Fuchsia City is where the glitch occurred. If that's a good starting point to go from, it could be worth looking into.

Pf987 well he did most of it with out struggle so he should be fine.
i wonder if pokemon mystery dungeon would be possible...
it will definitely become impossible at a certain point.

Someone should run a test to see if this happens with a normal starter. Maybe it's a flag that gets tripped at a specific progress point.
Chowder908 So to oversimplify, he essentially ran out of PP for Struggle?
Bobby DeWall in a nutshell yes.

I might try that, is spewpa exclusive to X? Or can you find one in Y?
ajddavid452 pretty sure you can find one in Y
ajddavid452 I think you're thinking of the wrong Pokemon. Spewepa is the evolution of Scatterbug, the basic bug Pokemon you can find starting in Santalune Forest. So it's not version exclusive.

Bulbapedia is aware of the bug: "In Generation I, a glitch could on very rare occasions activate where a Pokémon will not use Struggle when out of PP, depending on what the player is battling at the time; it could either soft lock or freeze the game."
Same with Blaine: "In Red and Blue, a rare glitch can occur where he will use a Super Potion on Pokémon he just sent out despite them being at full health."
Anzel maybe the people at Bulbapedia saw this video
Looks like it. That particular line was added in a revision on the 20th of February, 8 days after this video was uploaded.
It's actually been known for a while in the speedrun community. They see this from time to time both on Lt. Surge and Blaine.
I'm glad someone recognizes the fantastic GC music

Actually, your rival missing two blizzards is actually insane.
Since in gen 1, Blizzard has 90% accuracy instead of 70%
10% chance for the first Blizzard to miss, then another 10% chance for the second one to miss, means that in total, there's only a 1% chance for two Blizzards to miss in a row like that. Amazing that it happened.

Anyone else re-watching this after seeing the JRose11 run
Enemy DROWZEE used DISABLE! It's super effective! GAMEBOY has fainted.
lol.
xD

In Gen 1, Struggle has 10PP, but using it doesn't normally use up PP. No idea how he managed to do it, but apparently he used up those 10PP?
That reminds me of the Ghandi bug in Civ I where he would be 1 peaceful then gets lowered by 2 because of democracy and ends up being a 256 out of scale of 10 in how warmongering he is.
domehammer Gandhi ends up turning into Hitler man

I found this line searching the repository for "struggle". Seems that it shouldn't decrement the pp when struggle is used.
I'd be surprised if this is the bug cause, and lean more to something in the check for remaining moves pp.
github.com/pret/pokered/blob/37ded1d150197b3784bc351eeeb0a8d9713c2e35/engine/battle/core.asm#L2793
Maybe something in this part of the code?
You can't beat a Pokemon game using only one Pokemon
Pikasprey: Hold my beer
lol
DrPumpkinz, only water starters?
Guild Mostly. Water is an amazing type, and Surf is an amazing move. That said, gens 4 and 5 use Fire starters, with B2W2 switching to Excadrill part of the way through.
Swampert could solo sweep the entire elite four plus champions (with items) in r/s/e. I think it still can in the gen 3 remakes.
Pikasprey did these "Can you beat Pokemon [...] with only a [...]?" videos before everyone and their mother started milking them.
game be like: Ditto only playthrough? using Struggle? thats too easy man
True lol
yes, the superpotion glitch on blain is known bug.
as you said before, its just a case of gen1 beeing gen1
It's not just Blaine either, it happens in all battles where the opponent uses items and their Pokemon is slower than you (or speed-ties).
You may be the only one crazy enough to complete it, but technically you hold the World Record for beating the game with only a single ditto.
this guy lol
"Wasn't the opponent using an item always supposed to have priority?"
Guess what, it does not in Gen 1!
The AI makes its decision after the player, so it can do stuff like using Full Restores before the end of a turn (unless its PKMN outspeeds) and using a super effective move on your switch. Blaine using Super Potions at full health is just a quirk of his AI specifically, but the other trainers don't do this.
