I seem to remember Jeff Gerstmann saying at some point that they had prototypes at e3 one year that were a lot better than what shipped. Maybe the board was too expensive for Activision to produce so they dumbed down the board?
@@AntediluvianInternetEntity That actually sounds believable, and Shred improved on it because it was adapted for the lower spec board. Except, didn’t it start as just a Wiimote attached to a board? I guess it could’ve got super complex then got dumbed down again. I love that I was sitting here in the beginning thinking "wow he is really committed to the extreme joke by putting all these videos in a sidekick frame" then found out that was the game LOL
It seems like Derek moving his arms around near the board turned the Ride board into an oddly shaped Kinect controller. That was really interesting and entertaining to watch.
Me and my siblings had skate city heroes when we were kids. We thought that shit was hilarious. There's a segment where you have to drive robot drones into workers at a factory, and the workers let out this insane stream of gibberish and run away. It made me laugh so hard every time.

This was the deep dive into the Tony Hawk Ride Board that I never knew I needed. It's crazy that Atari 2600 had the board controller thing down with the Amiga Joyboard released for it in 1982. Anyway, this video really made me nostalgic for my T-Mobile Sidekick, especially the LX. Keyboards peaked with the Sidekick line of phones.
6:10 LED lights can cause major interference. A lot of them are so cheaply that they don't have a filter circuitry (causes a lot of noise). This is usually more of a problem with devices directly connected to a power outlet and not with battery powered ones.
It is called the noisefloor in radio, and the lower. The better the radio does reception and transmission. Tends to be a major concern with regards to installing a CB, GMRS, MURS, or a ham radio in a car. The alternator and battery throw a ton of free energy around. Something any wireless device must be concerned with btw.
Would the issue have been the IR sensors on the board controller? I have a lamp in my home that provides enough IR to reliably control a Wii Remote cursor if I point at it, similar to the candles people use.
Had Ride and shred for Ps3 and me, we loved Shred, especially the snowboard mode, we played in turns and it was a lot of fun for my and the boys for a year or so, it deserved better.
This is really fascinating, it’s clear Tony really believed in this tech but it’s a shame it didn’t work out with Ride but it’s good that it worked out for Shred. Apparently prototypes of Ride at E3 worked way better than the final version, so maybe they had to dumb down the board and didn’t have time to modify the game to improve it, and that’s why Tony said it worked really well, he had used the prototype boards.
As a kid, I had Shred for the Wii and defo had fun with it, so its nice to finally see someone that agrees (kindaaa). Even back then, my friends looked at me weird when I asked them to try it. You looked very rad the whole vid Derek B-)
I remember my roommate at the time pre-ordered this for 360 and was so excited about it. At that time we both skated about 20 hours a week or so after work so we were quite familiar with skateboarding in general and I had been heavily involved with it since high school with a number of my close friends going onto pro status including Pj Ladd. That being said, I think we used it for around two days and than it was never touched again. For setting up for kickflips or 360 flips it would have been more logical to put your left (or right if you ride goofy) a little over halfway up the board and apply a bit of pressure like your popping the board and flicking it with your left foot like you would for an actual kick flip. It could have been utilized for heel flips, 360 flips, etc. Before I played it I assumed that’s the method they would have used
Colors Live for Switch just launched with this weird ass SonarPen with a rigid plastic circle on the tip that bends to match the angle you're touching the screen.
