Very important video on chipping execution and preparation! You will see the anatomy behind it and how the way we are wired is critical in how we approach the short game. Time to chip the ball into the hole!
Shawn, I've been watching your videos for years now and they have transformed my game except for pitching and chipping. I understood the idea of letting momentum and the weight of the club do the work, but have struggled mightily on till now. This year I replaced my 10yr. old irons with PXG gen 4 0311p irons, the weight of the forged iron has helped a lot. Now I use my gap wedge for chips and pitch shots using the weight of the club and varying the length of backswing, so far I have not used my 56 or 60 degree at all because I can't feel the head. Momentum is truly your friend, my short game has improved 1000 percnt. Thanks for all the great lessons .
I have learned so much from your videos over the years, which has helped lower my score. The 💡 went off for me in this video when you said, “don’t get face the ball; face your center and bring the club back”. When I thought back to my last round, I was facing the ball on my chip shots and I did not have accuracy. Again, thank you for your lessons, I always learn something to help improve my game.
I would also mention the relationship of the sternum to the bottom of the swing arc. Your sternum is ahead of the ball which allows the club to hit the ball BEFORE it bottoms out during the chip stroke. Getting rid of all tension and allowing the shot to happen is key and you've done a great job explaining that. Another really good video, Shawn.
Thanks for the excellent, information packed , chipping video. I needed a simple way to coordinate the upper and lower body and minimize unnecessary hand action. I setup exactly like you describe, while making sure that the sternum, is left of the ball a couple of inches, more or less, depending on the lie and the shot required. I try to keep the sternum in the preset forward position while turning it in a tight circle. The arms and hands go along for the ride. The turning/twisting of the sternum applies a little torque to my tailbone. This feeling of having a little lower body torque, for the downswing, ensures a very consistent move through the ball. This simple sternum-tailbone connection feel is a game changer for me. It gives me great contact, when chipping with any club in my bag, from any lie.
Right on Dave! In our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com we have 2 awesome series called “kinetic chain series” (in this one, we show the chain exists in all our swings including the chipping and pitching and bunker shots; which sends the notion of “keep lower body steady” to the graveyard) and the latest “kinetic chain facilitation series” which shows all golfers have this “ground forces” at their immediate disposal and show you how to activate it without thinking.
Awesome video! I have been doing left hand low chipping for a while and this really solidified some things in my mind. Also I have been having ball striking issues since I had weakened my left hand grip. I went back to my stronger grip that you preach and my ball striking immediately got back in line - you have a great teaching style and your stuff really works - thanks for all the help!
The great Ray Floyd describes chipping as "putting with loft ". Following your teachings it makes perfect sense because you're taking the wrist hinge variable out of the equation. It's the same for putting, no wrist hinge.
Correct!! But we are NOT resisting the wrists or making sure we don't use the wrist; WE USE THE WEIGHT OFNTHE ARM-CLUB UNIT TO PERFORM THE TASK OF CUTTING A DANDELION STEM IN THE DIRECTION WE WANT THE BALL TO GO, and when we focus this way, the body responds and gets out of the way and the arms don’t have anything to crash into and collapse. See an oldie but goodie called “arms and body timing shawn clement” and in the second half we show the same concept as the full swing for the short game. Huge. Nothing else compares. Steve Stricker and Jason Day have made their careers around this.
@@golflessons Thank you for reading and replying! I'll look for that video and put your advice into practice. Cheers from Vancouver Island! Found it and watched it with my morning coffee. Great tutorial!
I love the way you seem to simplify things. I will definitely be working on this. I actually am playing on Monday coming up, so I’m sure I will have to use these tips.
Great video as always. Your videos have improved my game exponentially. My chipping has been very good as of late but I'm try to minimize my chipping miss which is left of my intermediate target as a right handed golfer. Why does my miss go left of where I'm aiming?
Actually changed my back swing routine “in my head” tempo to one for Sav before starting my downswing. It’s about 1/2 sec slower and seems to be getting me into a better position. Used to be a 1 2 and downswing on 3. This video and the pull left video have made my confidence in my wedges much greater and I’m able to attack the course a bit more. Keep it up. Would live to see some true on course videos with your crew, like 4-6 holes played all they way through…for the content
I would love to see lessons chipping over a bunker to a short side pin, pitching to an elevated green, chipping out of green side rough with a poor lie to a fast green, chipping off of super tight lies. Just to see what kind of shot you would play.
Not watched the video yet but just wanted to say that your previous chipping video has transformed my game. As a 7.2 index I’d somehow lost my way with chipping and was struggling for any consistency of strike and as such, ball flight and distance. Watched your video and had a handful of practice swings in my bedroom and haven’t looked back since. Absolute genius. Thank You!
@@golflessons no seriously, thank you! It was literally that easy to follow your method I didn’t even have to hit a ball to master it 🤷🏻♂️ I just wish I could do the same with the other aspects of my game and get that index down to scratch 😆
Yes they can; but the face of the club needs to be open about 10 degrees to activate the sole or bounce of the club to deliver a shot free of getting stuck in the ground.
Love your videos. As a father of four daughters, I would, love to learn some lessons for kids to teach and encourage them to take up the game. Dad needs some playing partners! 😁
Correct! As the range of motion gets longer, the trail arm-elbow will bent and this is what activates the wrist to hinge. If the landing area is shorter, there is no need for so much momentum and range so the wrists do not get activated. On our premium channel, we have a great series on chipping; and one is called “Chip update” which is the chip between the 2!
Hello I didn't get it. When you open the face of the club why the ball isn't going right? Thanks for your videos and the strong grip that has helped me a lot. Antoine from France

Chipping instructions are soooooo confusing and contradictory. Ball forward, ball back, shaft lean, no shaft lean, keep shaft vertical, lift heel of club off the ground. I’m going to practice your method for a while to see if I can get consistent. Thank you.

Ball position too far forward, too far from ball, club face should be slightly open and not closed like in the full swing.
I've never seen the reverse grip for chipping.. my dominant hand is trail aswell. I'm going to try this out later. Thanks for the video

Great vid once again ty. One question are chips played still using a strong grip?
Yes they can; but the face of the club needs to be open about 10 degrees to activate the sole or bounce of the club to deliver a shot free of getting stuck in the ground.

Because of the excess loft that can only glance the ball at this point; see ‘open face short chip shot shawn clement”
When you swing that fast, the ball has no choice but go in the direction of the PATH. I do the same with my special par 5 driver swing.
Savy....congratulations???
Everything I chipped today the ball shot to the right got very discouraged I shot a 87 and lost about 7 to 9 shots chipping
What do you focus on when you chip?
The ball I'm thinking way to much about not screwing up the chip
