Still one of the best chipping videos on UA-cam. I keep comming back to it when I need a reminder on chipping technique. Hope you havea great 2022 season.
The best thing I've gotten into the habit of doing is not moving my head to look at the green until I hear the ball make contact with the green after the shot. Really helps me maintain focus on the shot that I've planned.
As a person who just went through this after returning to golf after a very long break, here is what I learned: - As Peter pointed out in the video, but didn't explicitly state using the words Arms and Wrists, for me the KEY was to re-learn again to chip using my back as rotation for speed / distance generation and remove all thoughts of using my arms - I still use a very very very very slight wrist set at the end of the back rotation and then a gradual wrist release on the downswing as that seems to generate the cleanist strikes - the 'other' technique I used on my road to recovery was the toe down technique I saw Greg Normal teach decades ago (it works every time and you will never miss a chip again) - this technique involves choking down the club as much as possible until you make your putter's shaft vertical (and basically into a putter), with the sole of the club no longer flat to the ground, but instead you are not going to chip with the upside down triangular lower corner of wedge - you basically stand the lower corner of the club on the ground and then choke up as much as necessary so that your arms are straight such that it is impossible to hit the ball thin or chunk it - ie you don't chunk a putter do you? - so you can't chunk this chip shot - you then you your wedge this way to chip - and it is amazing how easy and how well and how much confidence you can get chipping this way - Greg Normal taught this technique to use if the ball was resting down slightly in a depression in the ground as it would help you hit the ball very cleanly - it is a fantastic technique for chipping and running and I use it all the time in all situations now
The like/dislike ratio is astounding and a testament to how well this format is received. This is the perfect length for an instructional video to fix one problem with multiple solutions. I can’t stand those twenty-minute videos about one thing. I also can’t stand two minute videos. Excellent editing, as well. Very pleased with your content, Pete! And most importantly, thanks for the tips!
All excellent tips on chipping Peter! I've viewed you a lot on You Tube playing different courses and trying out different clubs, but this is the first teaching video of yours that I have viewed. This week I was chunking my short chips just off of the green with my wedges. As you mentioned, I probably was not utilizing the bounce and my takeaway was wrong. Now I know! I have been utilizing the 5 wood option and it has worked great. Good Job Peter!
Key points I learned which helped me so much. Weight forward, hands forward to hit the sweet spot. Follow through properly having faith in the loft of the club. Decide high or low with balls position (front foot going high, back foot going low) Great video peter. Keep em coming 👍
Chris Ryan said same, but with longer clubs standing closer, more upright. Worked well on my last outing. Look forward to trying your wedge tips. Will update you
Who tricked our minds to do that? Maybe it's the thought that by leaning back we have a better chance of a nice loft but ends up duffing or topping the ball on contact. Erase erase...
Pete....I thought you had finally nailed the teaching process, but then you diverted. All well and good seeing how to play a shot correctly, we've all seen that. The most effective method is to first show the incorrect way, duffing or skulling, because we have all done it, but we don't always see it from a third person perspective....and then show the difference that the correct way looks like. Cheers
I got a wedge fitting with Titleist and ended up with a rather different grind. Now bounce is better engaged with my same swing than previous wedge. Nipping ball consistently. Not foolproof but the huge improvement, which in turn builds confidence, which helps again! Great material, and production. Thanks Peter.
Hey Pete! I just watched you and Rick Shiels play with Dude Perfect! I am a new golfer in America and I don't even have golf shoes yet. So, I fall over a lot when swinging :D. But, this video is exactly what I needed with my all over the place chip shots. For some reason I'm much better using my 3 wood or 4 iron. Everything else is just... bad lol.
Hi Pete! For me, my chipping became much better after watching Rick's video "5 Different Ways To Use A Hybrid On The Golf Course". On shots like you were showing, I would normally "putt" with a 7 or 8 iron, with decent success. Once I started "putting" with the hybrid, I started leaving them REALLY close and have had more chip ins with this method. Of course, you have to see the line! :)
Love your tips. I've found the best remedy for me is to put a lot of my weight on the front leg. It's helped a lot, but I'll be trying to incorporate your other tips from your video.
Haha, my dad is always happy to tell me he's going to use his hybrid around the green. He makes it work well too. Im stubborn and prefer the feel/flight of a wedge even though I occasionally blade it. With those tips though, I might just get better with it!
I've been playing golf for well over 40 year and always struggling with chips. I viewed this video morning and practiced it this afternoon at the practice green, wow, this is going to change my game, as you said, its all about the body rotation. I can't wait to play this week, thanks Peter!
My highschool coaches always get mad at me because I use a pitching wedge for all my chips and it always works for me. I don’t like to mess around with too many clubs. Too much to think about. Chipping, just use a pitching wedge with a putting stroke🤷🏽♂️
have always subscribed to the Davis Love " minimum air maximum roll methodology " Depending on my greenside lie I use anything from a 7 iron to 60* wedge. I have had a good amount of success with this.
Really useful again Pete. I tend to overuse the hands to flick at the ball. Watching you it’s almost a putting triangle which eliminates that. I’ll get on it 👍
The thing that stopped me from chunking chips was finding a wedge with a rounded off front edge on the sole. The ones with a sharp front edge have a tendancy to catch the ground if you come in too steeply. Some cobra irons have this, I don't know about others.
A great trick for being just off the fringe is to take a 7 iron and use your putting stroke. The loft will naturally pop the ball over the fringe, and as long as you keep your hands soft it should have the same distance feel as your putter. Just remember to grip the club and address the ball like a putter. Appreciate the tips Peter. I'm one of those grip in your left pocket guys, with loads of forward press in the hands. I like the low ball flight with the one hop check spin, but i've been having consistency issues with contact. My hands have gotten really yipping, but i can hit sand and flop shots fine. I think I'll take your advice and try to use the bounce angle a little more, get back to a sweeping stroke with less of a V shape.
I'll try using 5 wood for pitch and runs next time I'm out. I've used a 7 iron and find that I catch turf first sometimes and ball goes half distance. Great tip Pete.
Thanks Pete, currentlytrying to learn the feeling of using the bounce rather than just hitting leading edge into the ground. I think I’ve been chipping incorrectly for my entire golfing life 🤦♂️ Want to get those nice floaty chip shots rather than my current low bullets (with a 60😆)
Great Video Pete I love your content the swing ruler video is my all time favorite. You should do more videos with other golf UA-camrs. Keep up the good work.
I have always subscribed to the Davis Love " minimum air maximum roll methodology " Depending on my greenside lie I use anything from a 7 iron to 60* wedge. I have had a good amount of success with this.
Great video, something I suffer from! Quite often it’s when I don’t commit to a shot because I don’t know how it will end up. More practice needed to gain that confidence!
Biggest tip that's helped me chip + pitch cleanly is keeping my lead arm and shaft in a straight line to make sure the bounce is exposed and focusing on eliminating any wrist hinge
Hi 👋🏻 peter , once again a great 👍 video!!! I have to say I follow also the channel of Rick. But I have to say you explain every stroke so perfectly.... I folleded last review of golf balls while I was doing my running track- and I could image every hit you did....it s perfect 👌 I can learn while doing sports !!! Mega!! I want to say : thanks for your precise explanations !!!! Go for it 🔥👍
One thing that helped me out tremendously, and Pete mentioned it, but rotating your hips through the chip. I was really bad about only using my hands and arms when i was chipping and this lead to a lot of inconsistencies in ball striking and speed. When I started actually rotating my hips through the shot and letting my hands and arms kinda just follow my ball striking and speed improved tremendously and it’s a lot easier! Make sure you chip with your hips!
I’m an amateur golfer but I have found that I can chip extremely consistently if I hold my pinky on my left hand at the butt end of the wedge grip and my palm (extension of my pinky) overhanging the grip. I get such a good feel and have had so many chip ins because of it. I don’t think anyone else has tried this but it works really well for me. In close proximity to the greens
My thought on getting solid chip contact is always to feel like i'm limiting my wrist hinge and keeping my weight on the left foot through the entire motion (for shots under 60 yards)
Just came across your site. Great instructional video. Tried it this morn in my backyard off a mat. Looking forward to testing on the range before my afternoon game today! Quick question, can you please elaborate a little more when the 5 wood becomes the best opportunity around the green? Thanks!
With chipping, I treat the wedge like a putter. Pitching I treat like a normal shot but only with a 20-40% swing. Also definitely agree with using a fairway or hybrid for long running chips.
I look an inch in front of the ball on all my chips. I dont know why but it has made my short game so much better. I have also worked on holding my hands still during pitch shots which has probably had an effect too
After thinking about the eyesight more I believe that I thought of my short game problems as a chunk problem first and foremost then a blading overcorrection. Looking in front of the ball has prevented the chunk and in turn prevented the overcorrection to blade
In these situations I use my 56, deloft the face a bit so that I keep the leading edge down. You don't want too much loft or you'll spatula under the ball, or hit it thin depending on lie. Keep your weight forward, hands soft, and accelerate through the ball. The trick is keeping your back swing short and accelerating through with the right tempo. Too fast on the follow through and the ball will come out hot, too slow and the rough may grab the face. Tempo is the key, just get a feel for how much the rough grabs the face on the practice strokes.
I made improvement around the greens by using 7iron if i have no bunkers of loads of rough to play over.... putting stroke .. get it on the green then run it to the hole....most time get it within 5ft have hole a few of them.
Great video, much appreciated. One question. Position of the hands/grip in regard to the the grip/shaft of the club. Reason being I have seen many vids that say you should grip down on the shaft with these shots. Chip and pitch shots. Thoughts?
I HAD AN EPIPHANY a few days ago. Bottom line, as ive experienced, is that if your swing path is off, it doesnt matter how hard you work at the grip, or ipacting the ball, or anything. You will hit the ball inconsistently and poorly, and youll strain to get that far. I heard the prhrase "Swing straight up, and let gravity bring it straight down". From there i tried it, and found that with the correct swing path, my body, the club face, and the club aligned naturally, and i could hit the ball far more consistently, and better, and feel like im hardly working... ive been swinging around my body and trying to compensate causing my swing path to be off, which then throws literally everything else off and itll feel impossible to figure out why your hitting before, then after, then thinning, then fatting... Its the craziest thing...
Just got back to serious golf after a 25yr break, same clubs I bought over 35 yrs ago!! I definitely see a need to develop a series of wedges, but the combinations available lofts/grinds/bounce..... where do I start?????🥴🥴
Putting that weight on the front foot has been the best advice for me. Only way to hit that fat is to activate your wrists on downswing (yep, done that too).
Awesome Pete. I just chunked the other day with a 10 yard uphill chip. What do you do uphill? Do you try and keep spine angle but how do you keep from digging in. Esp medium turf, rough.
Is there a way you can do a video showing info on a way to tell if we’re using the right ball? Sometimes I feel like I’m not using the correct ball based on my Skill set, power, club speed, ETC.

- As Peter pointed out in the video, but didn't explicitly state using the words Arms and Wrists, for me the KEY was to re-learn again to chip using my back as rotation for speed / distance generation and remove all thoughts of using my arms
- I still use a very very very very slight wrist set at the end of the back rotation and then a gradual wrist release on the downswing as that seems to generate the cleanist strikes
- the 'other' technique I used on my road to recovery was the toe down technique I saw Greg Normal teach decades ago (it works every time and you will never miss a chip again)
- this technique involves choking down the club as much as possible until you make your putter's shaft vertical (and basically into a putter), with the sole of the club no longer flat to the ground, but instead you are not going to chip with the upside down triangular lower corner of wedge
- you basically stand the lower corner of the club on the ground and then choke up as much as necessary so that your arms are straight such that it is impossible to hit the ball thin or chunk it - ie you don't chunk a putter do you? - so you can't chunk this chip shot - you then you your wedge this way to chip - and it is amazing how easy and how well and how much confidence you can get chipping this way
- Greg Normal taught this technique to use if the ball was resting down slightly in a depression in the ground as it would help you hit the ball very cleanly - it is a fantastic technique for chipping and running and I use it all the time in all situations now
Great comment!

That thing about leaning back to help it, damn that's my issue. Finally someone able clarify it, thanks m8

Looking forward to flying greens everywhere trying to chip with my 3 wood haha Nice on Pete
Carl Jeffreys hahaha
I find hybrids work too. I love hybrids to punch out of trees.
Its nice to a find a 1 year old video that fixes my problem quick and easy. 3 balls- collect them. Fantastic. Thank you.

Use the shoulders and keep the v shape in your arms.
Great suggestions, hopefully by watching it over and over again, one day I will be able to repeat it :-)
You have changed my life Ricky can’t thank you enough

Thanks. Great technique and relaxed chipping. Better chipping leads to a better one putt!

Another great vlog peter, never thought of using my 5 wood around the green will definitely be giving it a try in future.👍
It's good I use my 3 wood a lot
Really useful again Pete. I tend to overuse the hands to flick at the ball. Watching you it’s almost a putting triangle which eliminates that. I’ll get on it 👍

The hybrid does do great at that shot..Almost holed one and liked the idea.
I’ve used my hybrid off the greens a few times but I usually hit it too hard. Going past the hole 6 to 10 ft. Great tutorial I’ll use soon.
Lorenzo Alston sounds like it just needs a bit of practice
Great stuff Pete. First part of my game that falls apart when I haven't been able to get on the course for a few weeks so anything to help is great.
Rob Biles hope it helps!!
Best advice straight to point instead of annoying music and plenty examples as well

Good refresher lesson Pete.
Steve Barker 👍
Giving these tips a try tomorrow. 😊

I'm in this video and I don't like it.
I'm a big fan of using the wood greenside to get the ball into the green
Great video Pete love your teaching lessons.

great video thanks! I was wondering if the stance should be slightly open when chipping? thanks
Great vid Peter will be trying to put these hacks into practice

Thanks for the advice Pete

Will try with the fairway woods.
What angle bounce do you have on your different wedges? I heard Tiger say that amateurs shouldn't have wedges with less than 12 degrees bounce.
Bounce is your friend
Excellent lesson.
Any advice for short chips from thick rough that u don’t have much green to work with I struggle with them a lot
Patrick Bourke more tips on the way
In these situations I use my 56, deloft the face a bit so that I keep the leading edge down. Great video, much appreciated. One question. Position of the hands/grip in regard to the the grip/shaft of the club. Reason being I have seen many vids that say you should grip down on the shaft with these shots. Chip and pitch shots. Thoughts?
