    This might be one of the best golf instructional videos I've ever seen. The 1/1000 no spin comment hit me like a hammer. I've spent 30 years fighting to get to "positions" and hit the ball straight only to finally realize that the human body simply doesn't respond to position based swings.
    I've been struggling with pulls and pull hooks for over two years now. It started with toe hits and while they are still there, the pulls are killing me. Thank you Shawn for adding clarity and common sense to the never ending quest to master the swing.

    After watching several of your videos I’m convinced that it’s more about your calm mindset Shawn. You seem to have the demeanor that doesn’t panic when a poor shot is struck, and your mind calmly moves to figuring/solving the problem. So many of us panic when we strike a terrible shot and don’t understand how to correct.
    I think a video on your mindset (how to calm down and pull yourself out of the abyss, if you will) is actually Part 1.

    There's a TON of details in this video. I had to watch this one a 2nd time and I'm glad I did. Pulling the a shot, for me, is when I come out of my tilt. Maintaining proper tilt has been engrained thanks to your instructions. But knowing the reason why it occurs is a big deal for me, so thank you for explaining these details. Tweaking the face angle from watching the ball flight, absolutely. This is simply dialing in for our individual machine. Still happily a premium member!

    Thanks Shawn. Great explanation of club path and club face control. I am a premium member and am working my through the videos. This one resonates with me. Dreaded left pull is very frustrating. Probably reinforced because a successful finish has the player facing the target 90 degrees from the original alignment. Gotta stay with the club path task over the ball and intermediate target. A work in process.

    As a premium channel member, I was aware of most of the content of this video dealing with hitting a draw shot. What I didn’t pick up on previously was your explanation here about having your shoulders, hips oriented to the right of the intermediate point. I have been trying to hit through the ball to the right of the intermediate point with my body oriented Square to the target line.

    As a huge fan of the late great Mike Austin/Mike Dunaway teaching, one thing I always admired about your swing is it is from the ground up. Best bucket of balls I've hit in years. On average I was hitting my irons 20 yards further. The most interesting part is that my misses were not nearly as off target. Just as you described I'm that guy totally disappointed in a shot I had complete confidence was going to the target but instead 30 yards straight left of the green under a tree in the bark dust behind a protruding root from the tree . Double for sure maybe even a six. Happens so much I've been practicing the recovery shot in anticipation of needing to scramble and stand on the tee box totally confused on what and why and how to fix it.
    Que pensez-vous de ce genre d'ajustement - il est inspiré de vos instructions, sans que c'en fusse une.
    NB : il semble que vous ayez déjà enseigner à l'Île des Sœurs alors que j'habitais Verdun. Dommage que je vous aies manqué. :)

    It kind of sounds like the inverse to the second part is true too. If you were slicing the ball, and suddenly you fixed your slice with pulled left shots all day, then you fixed your face but not your path.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  2 місяці тому

      Exactly! This is why face is first and you need to get some hooking going, then youy brain can say say hey, if you swing to the right, IT WILL COME BACK FOR YOU. If you can’t predict it will come back, you can’t swing right!!

    Excellent video, as usual. Esp. the 10 minute mark. For years I have used your strong grip to get incredible distance and accuracy with the irons. But early experiments with the woods had me pulling with the strong grip so I have been using a less-strong grip with inconsistent results, e.g. sometimes a 250 yard drive, sometimes 300 or 310. Once 357! But inconsistent. So yesterday at the range I tried the strong grip with driver again and it has started to work. I will keep testing this, I think its the answer.

    • @m.thomas2589
      @m.thomas2589 Рік тому +1

      well I tried the stronger grip again today, and could not get it to work with the driver consistently. What worked better was your idea to focus on a high target.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Рік тому +1

      Keep delivering with ease well through the ball and towards the target! then use the “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” video to fine tune how strong the driver needs to be; some students need stronger grips with the woods and some need less; depends on the equipment!

    My two main issues with irons are (a) hooking/pulling left and (b) hitting fat. The more I really emphasize taking a divot after the ball, the more compression i get, but also the more I hook. I find that if I move the ball back just right of center, I immediately get rid of the fat shots and the ball flight straightens out. In fact, having the ball back in my stance for 6 iron - through wedge, i get really straight shots with solid compression. This seems to follow the advice you're giving - keep the ball back of center. Conceptually I understand why moving the ball back helps with fat shots, but I'm not really sure why that also straightens out my ball path. Anyway, here's the issue: every article, youtube instructor, or coach instructing on the fat shot issue, says to put the ball back in your stance. Apparently, it's a good band aid but not a good long-term fixt. My question is why does the consensus appear to be to avoid moving the ball back as way of fixing fat shots? You're the first person I've seen to suggest moving the ball back of center.

    I actually felt this for once. If I pull which is about 75% of attempted draws I can feel myself not swing to the right. I hit the most beautiful fade but I get in my own head. Can carry the fade 265-270 and find the fairway every time. But I always think back to the 3 times out of 1000 I hit a perfect draw and was 300 plus. I’m an 18 handicap, got it down at one time to a 9.8. I’ve even played 2 rounds at the time of the 9.8 that solidified that I have scratch golf in me. A 1 over and a 2 over. Everything just happened was hitting 5-6 17 degree wood off the deck 220. Since that club has became a stroke gainer hit it 50 yards. Off the tee instead of sticking to the trusted fade I’m hitting it off the trees. Then I’m 3 putting. Start the round with a par or birdie because I get up hit the fade. 337 par 4 I’m inside 60 yards, boot I’m on in 2 9-10 times. 2nd hole disaster. Really no way of hitting the fade tight fairway tee box setup basically down the right side have to hit a draw that starts straight. Bang off the trees to the left 100 yards off tee box. 409 yard hole, pull the 5-6 wood 50 yards in front of me, or if I pull an iron still 2 more shots at best to get there. I’m on average double bogey. 3rd hole par 3 water surround hole. Went to a hybrid pw was a 5-6 on the hole now knocked it down to par or a 4. Par 5 next I’m good par or bogey. I just have the 3 holes that call for a draw that really wreck my card

    So I have had this problem at times (about a 20-30 degree straight pull). I was told by two different pros that it was; hips not rotating open before the upper body (used the tether ball wind/unwind) analogy. The other said it was club face! Much like a push (opposite of a pull) is an open club face.

    • @golflessons

      BOTH CRAP!!
      1-can you put your hand in the fire and swear you delivered through the ball and to the right of the intermediate point? What was the last thing going through your mind before you swung?
      2-if your target is the ball, your hips will quit at impact and the hands will release too soon; if you release into the direction you want to start the ball, then your hips will continue all the way through until the club catches the hands well past the ball; IT IS INSANE WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT; AS IT YOU WERE FRIGGIN DEFECTIVE!! At our school, YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG! You are simply a product of your focus!

    I have battled with pulls in the past except my misses were more like 5 yards left. It drove me crazy trying to figure out a solution. I weaken my grip a sure enough that draw turned into a fade.A fade is something that I never want to experience again. My feet , knees , hips and shoulders have always been parallel to my intended target line. When I tried aligning more out to the right that 5 yard draw turned into a 10 yard draw. Its impressive on how the brain automatically compensates for small changes. It was only after studying hours of video and looking at swing path and face angle that I figured out. Sometimes the solution is smaller than you can imagine and like many other things start at setup. In my case it was the trail arm at setup. I noticed a very straight trail arm at address which pushed my shoulders slightly open at address. This produced a straight down the line 0° swing path. This is not a desirable swing path when the face angle is slightly closed. When I added a small amount of bend in the trail elbow at address it was like magic. The swing path was 2° in to out and the ball repeatedably ended up drawing on target. The logical part of the brain was at war with the central nervous system. Set up at address straighten that trail arm then add some bend and repeat this straightening and bending . Notice how this directly affects your shoulder alignment at address. This not only affects my shoulder alignment but directly determines swing path. So yes I can most definitely relate to this video.
    Thank yinz

    I am finding that when I miss left I am coming under it sometimes, but keeping my weight on my back foot and just spinning out with my left hip….not shifting my weight first and compressing the ball,,,,,it has to do with my habit of standing with my weight on my left hip when I am not playing golf. ,,,not finishing the swing…sort of my version of reverse weight shift. I feel myself spinning out, so I automatically try to create width by dropping back and down, but my hips whip the shoulders and club around. Left sand trap all day yesterday….but not so bad with the driver…..less than half the drives were pulls….some really good long straight ones..slight fades and one slight draw

      If you are pulling straight left; with no curve left; line up the way I show you, play the ball back of centre, feel like you are going to release 30 yards right of the target, let it go there and stay with that blur in that direction all the way to the finish. See what the ball does; if it stays right, then make the grip stronger or close the face or a bit of both as they are one of the same in dynamic motion. As I see this video, I was able to start the ball at the "red flag" but like the shots in the video above they ended up left of the red flag. Although I was left, I was pin high and way way longer (7i -175 yards). I was hitting slices for the past 20 years. Thank you. This is huge for me. Where I lost out was - yardages, wasn't hitting my wedges close, couldn't fade the ball.
    I will ask you a question though, by end of the round as I was able to predict so I started aiming right of my flag, but the draw immediately stopped. Ball went absolutely straight with no distance loss. Was I was pulling the it when I went straight at the target?

It seems to me that if one were to look at the shoulder plane during the backswing and during a pulled shot that the two planes are quite different with the follow through being much shallower due to the left shoulder going to the right instead of going up. Hi Biggregg5 this is Mu. Top three training aids that can recommend for your particular situation would be the Swing Caddy which offers different drills to help with club head speed and tempo. www.swingimpact.com/ you can use Shawn’s promo code to get a discount: 10010
      Another training aid is the lagshot device that I have noticed gives more club head speed when I use a “slower swing” to utilizes proper momentum in my swing lagshotgolf.com/ used promo code “savannah” if you are in the US or code sav15 if you are outside the US
      The last training aid is the Rypstick which I have started using to get up to 150mph club head speed. I have used the device the last two weeks and I was average 145-149mph club head speed in the my speed session this week as reference to how beneficial it may be for you for your situation. lagshotgolf.com/ you can use promo code WISDOMINGOLF for added discount.
      I hope one of these tools will be the one that can help you recover your distance. Let me know if you need help with the decision.

      Mu....thanks I didn't get a notification from UA-cam of your response, so just now I was coming back to leave another in case you missed it. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.

      Last thing, Mu. While I am on a good routine that is working, I'm bad about buying things with good intentions, but the they end up as expensive wall decorations. If could have only one for now, what order would you get them in?

      @@biggregg5 I would recommend starting with the Swing Caddy and then work with the Rypstick.

    I always enjoy your lessons but struggle to put them into action. Guess I need more range time!
