    As a certified technician for 4 major brands, the best drive as far as maintenance is the shaft drive, requires little to no maintenance. Belts follow. Then chains. But it also depends on the application and conditions and riding style you are trying to achieve.

    Hey Cycle Cruza, love my FJR. As you know it is shaft driven but I love it. Very low maintenance, the manual says change the fluid every two years. It is a heavy bike, but plenty of power for riding on the streets. I haven't had any issues with it.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  3 роки тому

      Yeah if you don't care about weight and some power loss but love low maintenance than a shaft drive is a good choice. Really, it comes down to preference.

    I have all 3 and I love all of them. I would never get a bike based of what drives it, but they all have there advantages. Just as long as you have a bike you love, is all that matters. Peace..

    Yeah theres no changing a belt at the side of the road. However, your belt snaps on the highway you lose power and can maybe coast to the shoulder. Your chain snaps on the highway its most likely going to lock your back wheel up and cause you to highside. I know which I would rather have.

    FAKE NEWS! The shaft drive does not lose 31 percent of its power, it does not have a bunch of gears as incorrectly illustrated in this video, and there is no longer a jacking effect. My VMAX 1700 loses 12 percent between the crank and the rear wheel. The inefficiencies of the shaft drive are not from a bunch of gears, rather it’s from the need to change the direction of the rotation. The changes in direction can be reduced if the bike has a longitudinal crankshaft. The rear jacking effect keeps getting repeated over the decades by those who have never ridden a shaft bike. Rear jacking was an issue in the early days, but not so much today. My 2020 VMAX does not jack at all.

      Yeah most people don't BUT if you do you will be stranded guaranteed if a belt snaps. Many people have gotten belt snaps on the XDiavel, it was a bad belt guard design. I wonder if Ducati fixed it. They refused to cover it under warranty.

    Brotha Cruza. Before buying both my Ducati V4 R and MV Agusta Brutale Serie Oro, I was actually looking at getting the 2020 BMW R 1250 RS(this bike has a 105 lb per foot of torque !!!!) because of the shaft drive that it has. Also with the 3 year, 36,000 mile Warranty along with the all famous(at least where I live) 'Loaner Bike' program which my local Motorrad has in case any warranty or recall work has to be done over a 2 day or a 2 week period ! No other motorcycle dealer in my area, from KTM, Ducati, Suzuki, Honda or Harley has a 'Bike Loaner' program; except the local BMW motorcycle dealer. That alone was a good enough reason to go with BMW. But, so far so good I haven't had any chain splashing issues. Perhaps in 5 years I will get back with BMW to buy a shaft driven bike :)

    • @CycleCruza

    I’ve owned all three types. I hate the maintenance that comes along with chains, but they’re the best in my opinion. I wouldn’t shy away from any of the three, because they all have their advantages. Belts are damn near set it and forget it. While shafts are heavier, I feel like that low weight some times helps keep the bike stable through crosswinds on the highway. I think it’s hard to beat the efficiency of a chain, but I really hate cleaning and lubing it.

    Hey CC, when you mention that shaft drive reduces absolute efficiency by 30%, does it mean that bikes w shaft would have a ~25% increase in power if converting to chain drive as a result?
    If that's the case, my idea of engine stress on bikes like the fjr1300, super tenere 1200 and r1200gs is radically changed.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  3 роки тому +1

      It just means that if you took the same bike and converted to a chain drive it would be a bit faster than with the more complex and heavier shaft drive. Like the saying goes "No chain no gain!"

  • @problemslayer3538

    Looks like the kevlar belt took the damage well. I wouldn't be looking to change it based on what I saw in the video. Additionally I've not heard of anyone whose had a belt failure, nit to say nobody has of course. Chain or belt I would say depends on the application, for sports bikes chain, but for mid range power and torque like cruisers for example, belt all day.

  • @tacticalbutler1556
    @tacticalbutler1556 3 роки тому

    Pro-tip: using pure kerosine (just kerosine, none of that citronella smokeless crap) to clean the chain is the best. It doesn't damage the o-rings on the chain, it's easy to find and it's fairly inexpensive.

Also the manufactures are announcing their new bikes in general so plenty of fodder there for verbage. My Kawasaki Vulcan, Yamaha Maxim X, Honda Cx550 were all drive shaft no problems ever. My Honda cb 360, and Rebel, were chain. My Harley Sportster 883 stock and 1200 stage 1 were belt. My fastest bike was the Maxim X from 1985 Inline 4 16valve with top speed of 130ish and a quarter mile @11ish bone stock. My heavily modded Maxim X was even faster and both were drive shaft. My Kawasaki Vulcan bone stock was quicker then my 1200 stage 1 but the sporty on the top end would crush it again (Vulcan) shaft drive. My experience has been shaft driven is not slower then chain or belt. However all these were cruisers but Maxim X had the same engine (Similar) as the Yamaha r6. 🤯

    Shafts belong on highway cruisers, you can do 1000s of maintenance free miles; chains are the best for better torque at low rpms, specially for dirt bikes; belts are for weirdos and chinese scootas!.

    When you say $700 for a belt you must mean Retail price from the Dealer and Dealer Labor costs to install it.. I am sure you can buy a belt aftermarket for much less.. I had a 4 wheel drive Tractor Dealership built Minniapolis Moline Tractor that was belt driven .. the Belt was 4" wide and very thick ...
    When you say you loose 11% pwoer from a chain and 31% from a shaft crive.. You mean from gross engine HP to the power lost from the transmission shaft and rear differential .. combined..
    Shaft Drive bikes also get considerably worse MPG thanks to the power loss in the differential ..
    You can put elctric motos on the wheels of a car and run those motors with a gasoline powered engine and get better mpg than with a transmission and differentiol propelled normal car...

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  3 роки тому

      Ducati parts are super expensive, even if you do the work yourself. It $700 for the belt alone not including labor. No, I said chain has a 3% power loss, Belt is 11% power loss and shaft is 31% power loss.

    Omfg... will you, youtubers, bloggers, etc., actually open a mechanics book? Or at least look at dyno charts? There is practically no difference between power losses among these options. Or anyone is willing to tell me that a shaft somehow absorbs 40kW of energy from the engine without melting in a minute or so? Just look at rear wheel power of chain driven bikes and shaft driven bikes compared to their rated engine output on dyno charts. % difference is 1-2% at worst. And only due to an extra gear or two on a shaft, depending on engine configuration. Stop spreading this nonsense ffs.

  • @stevemoriarity860

    Power loss, who cares ? Are you really racing everywhere ? Shaft is the best, belt is a good second place, Smooth & clean, chains suck. Bmw’ s. Maintenance free chain ? It may be better but maintenance free ? NO. Cheap ? NO. As far as changing a belt depends on make & model, Suzuki LS 650 takes about 10 min. HD sportster not much longer, big twin ?😆
