Absolutely dig David's voice. Should have made more albums with Mark. Mark's got the guitar (voice) and David's got the voice and look at how well they go together.
Not only does this 1984 performance have Mark Knopfler on guitar (which is quite a rarity after David Knopfler's departure from Dire Straits in 1980) but also then-current Dire Straits member Terry Williams on drums!
boris turk That will never happen, they don’t even speak to each other. www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/572696/Brothers-in-arms-Dire-Straits-siblings-no-speaking-terms
I'm blown away. Not from the song or the video, im blown away at the sound mark knofler was able to make with his guitar not being plugged in (1:55 - 2:00). And how the sax player was able to play a note without blowing into it. (0:31 - 0:40). Even David was able to move away from the mic while singing and it not affecting the volume and tone of his voice. Amazing
Im sorry if mark had been my brother. I'd been happy to be the strummer in his band. I would have soaked up all his knowledge of the guitar like a sponge and been thankful all along the way!
Agree! When Mark is brilliant and that brilliant is your brother and all you can do without him is just copying him. It's so nice to see in every earlier videos, they play together, how Mark is looking at his brother with love and care. Very sad that David and Pick left Dire Straits.
...Ciao Knopfleriani! :)
So here are the two brothers on the same stage some four years after their supposedly acrimonious split in 1980 during the recording of Making Movies. Clearly they could, at one point, stand to be in the same room as each other. There must have been some good will since David is appearing with what is ostensibly the then Dire Straits lineup. I wonder what changed?
Always wondered the same , during this performance there is no sign of tension, of course a few months later brothers in arms was released, maybe a bit of jealousy on David's part but I think something runs deeper
I remember an interview where David Knopfler as saying he didn't want to spend his life being a strummer in someone else's band. Looks like he ended up a strummer in his own band lol. Sounds like some some left over Making Movie's riffs :)
Check out some David's albums, later ones espcially. He is gifted song writer & is actually the better vocalist of the two Knopfler bros. David also plays Piano.
In my opinion David couldn't handle with Mark's superiority. Mark was Dire Straits. Both of them are musicaly talented but Mark was something much more. He was extremly hard worker, extremly hungry of a good melody and selfish at the same time. David wasn't been ready enough for the next level of Dire Straits music. David knew that Mark haven't had a need for another songwriter nor guitar player. Huge Mark's superiority has made David disbanded.
@@sinisabubalo7649 I heard in an interview that David hated touring. Liked recording but not touring. And Mark, both with Dire Straits and in his solo career, is a tourin' fool. Meant in the best way! He must spend half his life living out of hotel rooms.
My favourite song since the onset of unemployment. I find Knop Junior (assuming Dave is indeed the younger) seems to emit great warmth and humour in his vocals & it's great to see Knop Senior smiling so naturally as if he's performing with mates in a sufficiently large Newcastle bedroom. The saxophonist dude is equally cool and it is also undoubtedly his finest hour. John Illsley's absence is conspicuous though he was probably resting having recently signed his autograph for me. A most refreshing song, and I shall thus pursue my interest in this DS remnant with more focused passion. Nice one!
@adriank9 It's Mel Collins. Dire Straits were in Italy as part of their Alchemy tour - David Knopfler's backing band here are the Straits of 1983, sans Alan Clark and Hal Lindes..
Its' funny, in an interview, David said that he didn't want to be a strummer for someone else. I guess he got his wish - he's now a strummer for himself lol.
I have read interviews where David said they had not talked since he left Dire Straits, yet here they are in 1984 playing together. Odd. Anyways, is that John Illsley on the far left on bass? If so all that's missing is Pick Withers. Their miming was terrible here. David was, at times, several feet away from the microphone when singing. LOL
Nothing more brain-mashing than a good Dire Straits-sounding band, with Dire Straits members, singing about "Madonna's Daughter", recorded in 1984, streamed over the Internet in 2016! ;) CAUTION: The preceeding video may have contained contain Mark Knopfler playing guitar in the mid-1980s using a pick!
Very nice to see the brothers playing together. I though they couldn't stand each other after the Dire Straits-breakup. But omg haha look at 1:30, David forgets he is supposed to sing and rush to the mic. Very funny.
Anyone getting the impression that if Dave had been the frontman, and Mark played rhythm, Dire Straits would probably have been every bit as great--bit just a little different?
@@arancedisicilia75 Personality? I mean, I love Dire Straits. They're the band that got me into music when I was a pre-Kindergarten kid. But, I'd hardly call Mark Knopfler "mister personality"! I'm sure he's a great guy and all, but if he were any more reserved he'd be dead. He's a great guitarist, but, you know?
David copies a lot his brother's style, and the end of this song remind s me so much "Lady writer". There's also a song in David Knopfler's album Cut the Wire, that really attempts to sound like Private investigation...
This makes me wonder: - David left DS in 81 or was it 82? Since this is 84 it's clear that their relationship didn't go completely south when he left, something happened later. Such a shame, but brothers/siblings are a special- and can be a complicated dynamics if not flat out silly. Me and my older brother just recently didn't speak for almost a whole year because we had a (quite silly) argument about Putin of all people🤣. But when we spoke again it was just like the argument never happened and we had a good laugh. I can't even imagine not speaking to him for 40 years tho. Great song btw.
My God!!! Up is down, black is white, I've never seen that before, did that really come out in 1984? I thought the brothers were quite estranged by then.
This is on David Knopfler's debut album-- 'Release!' I can't believe mark is actuallly performing with him live here.... i thought they had a 'less than friendly' breakup when dave left dire straits.....
Great tune, but needs to be re-recorded (including vocals), re-produced and re-arranged somewhat. Great lyrical song title too. From the perspective of a composer, this really could have been a classic timeless killer track galloping to the top of the charts for weeks on end back during that era had it been composed/produced/arranged differently.
Mark looks like he doesn,t want to be there David pulls away from the Mic a lot when he is singing then you can,t hear him he does the a lot it sounds a lot like the tunnel of love ☺
Mark thinking "that voice sounds pretty just like mine" LOL
Actually mark's voice is a little bit softer sounding
I like their sound! I pray that the 2 knopfler brothers repair their spat someday They are great musically. LOVE Them both!!👧💕💕💕💕

Fantastic !

This is a beautiful song full of influence from straits with David's own style and a solo from Mark.
That solo is definitely not from Mark, not his style at all
The guitar solo not appear in this video...and this is playback...
