For The Record: Mark Knopfler
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2019
- Mark Knopfler says he can't think of anything good about fame, which is one reason he dissolved his hit band, Dire Straits, when they were at the peak of their success in the 1980s. But he continues to make music, most recently with the album "Down the Road Wherever." And as he wraps a tour of America, Knopfler sat down with Anthony Mason to talk about the music he has written, for himself and others, and why he calls it his obsession.

"I can't think of anything good about fame" says one of the greatest guitarists of all time... A true artist... A true musician...
Kate Bush said the same, and she is a true artist-if you don't agree with that then so be it. lol
@@mikekaraoke anyone who says that someone who tries to create art "isnt an artist" is a huge donkey. Art is art, whether you like it or not.
you all probably dont care at all but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Dustin Corey thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Perhaps there was more to the story, who knows, maybe he saw things he can't talk about. He is indeed such an iconic and highly loved respected musician. God bless him.
Man.. I just cracked up at Mark’s face when the interviewer said “restaurant reservations?”.. He’s like IDGAF dude 😂. Humbleness and and a true craftsman at its finest
He walked when they peaked, stayed out of the limelight, and didn't show for the R&R HOF?
That's the most rock thing I've ever heard!!!
,,, peter gabriel did sth similar,, just when the money started pouring in after the success and first hit with ' carpet crawl " & ' the lamb lies down on broad-way " he took the risk of going solo and follow his artistic intuition ...
This man is not only a legend, he's produced some of the most elegant playing I've ever heard. Huge respect for him.
Elegant is the word. More than any other guitarist that ever lived.
Yep...ask Chet Atkins
And a decent, kind human being.
Love this guy.
Mark Knopfler is unique in every way. I can listen to his music for hours and hours. I never get tired of hearing him play his guitar.
I love his guitar style
Watch Mark Knopfler Guitar stories, narrated by Dire Straits bassist John Illsley. ua-cam.com/video/27OT_FSWrIE/v-deo.html
I like 70's hard rock and guys like Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi & Ritchie Blackmore but Mark is equally wonderful. He has this thing and I dont know what it is. Maybe its because he plays right handed even though he's left handed or maybe its the way he uses his fingers. I can listen to Mark all day in the same way I can listen to the guys I've previously mentioned.
I think the same. Amazing after so many years still listen to his music.
yep same here - my musical inspiration
Not only can Mark play guitar, he has style and class that most performers don't. He never let success change the man he is. He is a true gentleman!
In 1986, a son and teenage daughter and I drove 4000 miles to and through Mexico. Brothers in Arms was the only tape we could agree on to listen, so after 4000 miles and decades on, I still love it.
Great story, Carole!
It's such a good album right ?
Saludos desde México!
Great story ☺
How you did during the almost 10 minutes of silence at the end of the A side?. I like a lot that album too.
Thank God for giving us the musical genius of Mark Knopfler
Mark Knopfler taught God how to play guitar.
He’s an amazing man . His musical genius is only a small part of who he is. ❤️💕🌻
Talking like an ordinary 70-year-old humble man and still one of the greatest guitarist and songwriters ever. That's what I call being an intelligent person. I love him so much.
“Nothing good about fame.” What an awesome guy, and a true artist. Privateering is one of my favorite albums of his.
Mine too.
Through Covid in America I did a lot of 16 hour road trips to visit my wife. Listened to a lot of albums front to back. Privateering is exceptional.
He's my neighbor, rides about like a normal guy (Which he is), live close by to John (Isley) his buddy. Writes songs and plays music, just a nice bloke doing his thing.
His brother disagrees
@@tonnaboy10 Well siblings rivalry can be difficult but there is always 2 sides to everything.
I'm so jealous that you live right next to my one and only idol
@@tonnaboy10 Me too...would you share your address:) (just joking...)
@@tonnaboy10 What does his brother say?
Hard man to not respect. He has a ton of dignity. His guitar playing is so tasteful and unique.
Dire Straights was the band I admired right from a young boy to now. Telegraph rd is one of the best songs ever written.
*Straits
Same here ☺☺☺
Agree with everything you said!
Telegraph Road is the only 14 minute + song that holds my attention and leaves me wanting more.
What are some of their songs similar to Money for Nothing?
Being a tad older than Mark, I have found that the older I get the more mellow I've become. It's good to see Mark has done this also. It's always nice to see a star like Mark that is not so "full of himself".
Age brings wisdom and that certainly counts for Mark Knopfler!
Was he not mellow ever? He was never full of himself.
If listening to the Alchemy album version of Sultans of Swing with your eyes shut does not make your skin tingle you have no soul. Soaring talent both playing and writing. Respect
Skin tingle? I used to own a high-end stereo system with a turntable. It would take me a good half hour to regain my composure after hearing Sultans of Swing from Alchemy on vinyl. Knopfler's guitar and Terry Williams' drumming are out of this world on this album, but especially on this song.
Six years ago my wife was successfully finishing her series of cancer treatments. Was with her for her last appointment because I wanted to thank her oncologist. He said he'd gotten to see his favorite guitar player, Mark Knopfler. My wife rolled her eyes and pointed to me. He said, "You like Knopfler?"
I said, "He's my favorite guitar player. Something about the way he plays speaks directly to my heart."
Turned out, he and I had seen the same concert. Time constraints went right out the window for that appointment.
That's nice! :D
Isn't it funny how music is the bridge to not only unite people, but try to bridge the gap of the soul & eternal. The soul has a longing and a yearning, which this life never seems to satisfy. Music is the next step beyond words to attempt to bridge that gap to the eternal, which is God.
Great to hear a positive story in the comments section. Glad your wife and the medical staff fought a successful battle
He seems to be the kind of guy that would be a life long friend. Very kind,
loyal and incredibly talented in countless ways.
Really? The guy that didn't show up with the band that made him rich when they were inducted into the Hall of Fame? Yeah, well, some friends are better than others.
@@swikle This old habit of judging without knowing real reasons is such a mediocre practice!! 🙄
@@fatimaluz777 How do you know it is a new habit? I might have always been this way :)
Hmmmm his brother wouldn't agree , they have been estranged for years.
Mark doesn’t give himself enough credit in his guitar skills. He sat in with Atkins and held his own. That takes skill
King's Revival Atkins is a good folk and classical country guitarist but not as creative or versatile as Mark Knopfler. I bet it would’ve been Atkins’ struggle to hold himself down to Mark Knopfler
Rather, Atkins held his own :)
@@Hilux244 Love of music
hes literally one of the top ten guitar players ever in my book... (and my personal fave)
@@SobersRajakumar Some of Atkins' skills were insane and out of reach to 99,9999999% of all players worldwide. Even to Knopfler. But Knopfler is a great songsmith with great lyrics and wonderful dynamic playing. It is not a skill - it is a gift by nature.
I love the current storytelling ballads Mark has written since earlier days. It reflects evolving maturity and slower paced earthy/ folksy music that we Americans like.
the most uderrated musician of the 80's, he is a great song writer and great guitarist with a unique style
I'm sorry but how is he underrated? His band have sold over 100 million records and he frequently ends up in top guitarists of all time-lists. Most people who know of him know what a talented musician he is.
@@johnzackarias11 well if you just consider what U2 has done and I think dire straits are far better in songwriting and execution...
Never underrated, nor as a guitar player or as a fantastic song writer!
Exactly what I am thinking
@@johnzackarias11 yes, absolutely! My heritage may be similar to ypurs? Karin Jensen Hovden. Norwegian and Swedish and now American.
His solo in Tunnel of Love 5:54 is sheer perfection.
I beg to differ. the solo on Telegraph Road was much better!
Let's just agree they're both amazing. :-)
@@fredgarvinmaleprostitute6451 I agree, Telegraph road is the crowning jewel
@@SmugSuspenders More than you charge!
He has so many, but yes tunnel of love solo is awesome.
Saw him last night (9-21) here in Phoenix. While he has slowed down a bit since the last time I saw him in 1992 (he was still with Dire Straits then), he continues to play like no other. He jokes about how the rest of the band is better than he is, but I'm sure every single one of those guys wishes they could play like he does. They did mostly his new material, but then did Your Latest Trick and On Every Street and the place went crazy. And for the first encore....Money for Nothing. It was a good night, a very good night.
Saw him at Benaroya in Seattle in 2001 'cause he wasn't coming to Phoenix that tour. My absolute favorite guitar player, he literally makes a guitar sing rather than just play. I love many other players, but Mark is unique and a genius with that instrument. Wish I could be him for an hour.
@@jm1mchp his guitar is different, and different is good 👍
Lucky you’s!
Yeah he has had a few accidents, and his age.
This man is a legend.
100%
Need a longer interview. Mark Knopfler is an enigma. Just fascinating. Liked the way he smiled when he spoke of giving "Private Dancer" to Tina Turner. He played a huge part in Tina's comeback as did many other English musicians.
The guitar is his instrument, his music writing is a reflection of the man and his life experiances . I have enjoyed his music since the seventys. Thank you Mr. Knoffler.
and i as well...
Humble Legends are hard too find. Lead on Mark....and Thank you
Mark Knopfler is so humble. I am sure he has some world class musicians in his band, but nobody can play his songs better than him.
I wanted so much to see Mark in concert when he was in my city, but I couldn't afford the ticket prices. So instead, I'm enjoying his youtube music. Thanks for great music, Mark!
Get the DVD "Real Live Roadrunning" of tour stop in LA in '06 with Emmylou & friends. Great stuff. (Samples on YT)
An immense talent. He has left his mark on the music world.
He seems honest and down to earth. Dire Straights is one of my favorite all time bands. And Mark one of my favorite all time guitarists.
Humble, "down to Earth" and yet (whether he likes it or not) a legend!!! A marvelous song-writer and guitar player! The world is a better place for having him and his music in it :)
I believe that this characteristic of not wanting fame is always noticed in sensitive people... who really do what they love. Mark, have my most humble and true admiration! ❤️Golden Heart❤️🎶
Mark is a MONUMENTAL guitar talent, one of the all time greats. Glad to see him back and playing live again... 👍
I joined the navy in 84 and this album still haunts me till this day . It was an anthem for service people throughout the 80s
I fooking adore this man
what a treat to sit down with him.
Unassuming humble genius.
A talent like this does not roll around once in a century, maybe once in a millennia, if even that
What a genuine, lovely man❣
Remember back in the '80's going to watch Eric Clapton in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London supported by Mark and Phil Collins on drums amongst others. Biggest cheer of the evening was when Mark was given centre stage to play Money For Nothing supported by Eric and Phil. 😎
LOVE MARK KNOPFLER !!!!!!!!!
Mark knopfler, genius and seems a genuine nice guy, hope to see him before he quits touring
KNOPFLER!
Craig Gomez whoops!
Get to be fast, this is the last tour...
cheapest tickets to his show are $400... its all about money for him now...
@@HUNDREDACREWOOD. Cheapest ticket they're selling Madison Sq Garden is 60. Idk where you're getting your tickets from.
I first knew about dire straits when the “money for nothing” video premiere debuted on mtv while I was at my 2nd duty station in the Air Force at around 21 years old and my roomy and I watched it in awe. But I failed to listen to a lot of their songs until now, at the age of 60 and I was shocked at how good they were and how masterful Mark Knopflers playing is. A true master at his craft.
So glad they played "Down To The Waterline" in this clip. Favorite Dire Straits song
I like Lady Writer a lot too
@@_Tommmmmm_ --- ...."just the way her hair fell down around her face..."
_Tom_ best dire straits song imo !
His music still resinates today.
*His music is covered in 'Lacquer?'*
Gerry Nightingale Fiberglass...
Had the privilege of seeing Dire Straits live at Forest National in Brussels in December '85 as a 12 year old.. Brothers in Arms tour... They stayed true to their music.. unlike a lot of other musicians who deviate from the recorded versions.. Epic, and still the benchmark for me today. 2 hours which made my life richer for ever..thank you!
I never liked Dire Straits at their height of fame due to their overlong songs, around 4 minutes is well enough for me,but I always recognised the skill to write play and perform those works. Now I still don't care for longer songs but appreciate their brilliance even more many years later. It's also nice to hear a great performer recognise the great musicians he or she has around them.
He did a great job on the _Local Hero (1983)_ soundtrack. A great little film.
One of my favorite movies and soundtracks!
Yes love it so much ❗
ainslie187 coming home is almost heavenly imo
Absolutely love this film. Watched it the first time because of the music and about 20 more in the theater because of the film!
And "Cal"
I love Mark K!
The more I listen to Mark speak the more I respect the man. He is a true musician. Does it for all the right reasons and his humility is such a strength for Mark, that it draws me to listen to his music over and over again. I love how he plays the guitar, albeit he says it's all wrong. That isn't the case according to my ears. He is a legend and deserves all the accolades he gets. Keep sharing your talents with us Mark.
One day Mr Knopfler will be finally put at the place he deserves : Legend among the greatest.
Absolute legend, chilled out and funny. I admire this guy so much.
Best guitarist I ever saw live. Amazing to watch.
A true gent - makes me proud to be British (and a Dire Straits fan)
It's nice when an elite artist is also a person you genuinely like. That's how I feel about MK.
Mark Knopfler is that quiet guitar hero I will forever hold dear. Some of his greatest work, in my opinion was far removed from the work he gained commercial success from. Sailing to Philadelphia to me is one of the greatest albums ever created, musically, instrumentally with intriguing stories throughout. Mark never compromised. Love his brief stint working with Ruth Moody as well. Their voices sounded so good together.
A gentleman musician. Play on!
This man has been the soundtrack of my life. I really mean this, his music has carried me through some difficult times as a young man.
Mark is why I started playing guitar. As I'm now a guitar teacher I'd say his style is an education, not a nightmare. In the word of ABBA. Thank you for the music
Mark's music still holds up nowadays
Mark Knopfler's music is the reason why I started listening to music, playing the guitar and why basically I am alive ;-).
Thanks for the music. It has brought me enormous joy.
He is the bees knees
Our three cats listen with us. They are mesmorised by his voice and his guitar.
He is a true musical genius.
His songs are all wonderful stories.
"Bees knees" is a lovely expression xP
Honest musician who knows what is important in life. Did not let success go to his head. A great guitar player . I really enjoyed kings call with Phillip Lynott
Just finished watching a Tim O'Brien interview about his brief tour with Mark Knopfler. He had nothing but respectful things to say, as well as some funny anecdotes.
Mark face when the interviewer mentions restaurant reservations being a perk of fame! 4:04.
He had to think about it ;)
Still, Mark's joined some silly Gentleman's Club in Britain, which I guess is the only thing I can hold against him
@@SmugSuspenders Awesome !!!
@@SmugSuspenders Masonic Lodge- if so- not nothing wrong with that. If he chapped the door- fair play
MARK IS STILL DOING IT .....HIS WAY.....AND SOUNDS GREAT 👍♥️
I first heard Sultans on armed forces radio in Germany in’78. I was a confirmed fan from the first verse, and remain an admirer of Mr. Knopfler still. Best guitarist/songwriter currently working.
Very humble guy .
A true class act and undoubtedly one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
Saw the Brothers in Arms tour back in 1985 in Columbia, Maryland. One of the best concerts I have ever experienced. Certainly one of the most memorable.
This guy is absolutely fantastic. The best guitarist, EVER and his songwriting is brilliant as well. Loved Brothers In Arms and all of the rest of the ones he did with Dire Straits but his solo stuff is nothing shabby either. Golden Heart was every bit as good as Brothers In Arms.
Mark Knopfler will always be my favorite artist. Brothers in Arms was a smash hit in 1985. But back in 1982, my boyfriend who was a very good guitarist with his own high school band. Made me a "mixtape" and the album Telegraph Road... he played "Romeo and Juliet" off of "MakingMovies" - I had never heard it before that date. I was immediately in love with music and him. Many years after our romance ended at end of college. I longed to see Mark Knopfler in person. Decades later in 2007 in Boston at amphitheater in July right off Charles River, I saw him in person. He was older, his voice slightly different but still mesmerizing. Still the best guitarist beside Eric Clapton.
Fine player. He has his own "voice" on the guitar. Unmistakable sound.
What a legend...
Lovely guy, who puts truck loads of feeling into his music.
A great British talent who lives outside of the box
🇧🇷MARK KNOPFLER, SIMPLESMENTE 💃O MELHOR DE TODOS OS TEMPOS ❤
Thank goodness he still has to make music ...makes my day - every day ❤️
....Can't think of a more prolific artist over the last 4 decades...
World Class
Very special...his music is magical and heavenly
You'd be hard pressed to find a more humble talent in this day and age. Thank you Mark for your brilliant creativity.
What a cool guy. A quiet hero.
This man is my hero
Still in shock he sat down for an interview and that he actually did a tour in the states.....
Why? He tours here for every record.

The best storyteller ever❤❤
What a genius. I listen to the live version of Your Latest Trick every other day.
What a humble man!
What a musician!

THIS IS WHY, Sunday Morning is my FAVORITE SHOW OF ALL TIME! Didn't know I wanted to know this story. Watched when was a kid, and still watch today!
For me this reiterates the title of my favorite Dire Straits album....Love Over Gold
There will never ever be another one playing the gitar like he does 🎸🔥the Greatest of All Time ❤️
I didn't expect him to be like that, he could have been going on playing huge arena and bowls with DS but he chose to walk away, instead of keeping the machine rolling...just like Gilmour...British rockers are such strong willed folks, at least some...
Mark looks like some old guy you’d meet at an allotment on Sunday afternoon. He comes across as humble but deep down he must be pretty happy with the things he’s achieved. Amazing guitar player and songwriter.
I have so much mad respect for that guy. I had no idea he was so averse to the attention. Nice to see him and I'm so glad he's still touring. He missed my town this time but hopefully next time!
